We arrived from Syndney the night before and wanted to make sure we were set for the early morning flight so went to an Air NZ information desk to get boarding pass. The agent printed out an e-ticket and said we were good to go. We arrived an hour and a half early to the gate, with our carry on bags as we have done all over the world. We heard an announcement about bags needing to be checked and assumed ours would be gate checked if needed (as anywhere else in the world). The gate agent didn't arrive til 20 minutes before the flight and told us we DIDN'T have a boarding pass and needed to return to the ticket agent and check our bags. By the time we ran back to the ticket agent we were told it was too late to check our bags. We had to pay $100 more a piece to fly LATER through Christ Church. We were on our way to meet our kids for vacation and ended up losing a day and $200 additional dollars because we were given inaccurate information by the Air New Zealand info desk."

I tried giving AA a chance, but compared to when I flew on WestJest two months prior for almost the exact same trip (I flew to San Francisco versus San Jose that time), WestJet was by far more superior in terms of customer service, boarding organization, and friendliness. First of all, what bugged me profusely was the lack of seat selection and the crazy pricing for certain seats. On WestJet, the emergency exit seats were available without any additional cost, yet AA was charging $66 USD to sit there. Furthermore, seats closer to Business class also carried a charge of $25 (or something like that) - ONLY because you get to board sooner. I would understand if there was extra legroom involved, but really, it's just a matter of sitting and getting off before anyone else. If anything, those seats should be given to passengers who have tight connecting flights and need to get off asap. even in those cases, you shouldn't be charging someone almost $30 just so they can make it to their next flight that YOUR company arranged within such a short time frame. But the most annoying thing about my trip with AA was the fact that I had to take out all of my belongings from my carry-on and carry them in my arms because there was no room left in the overhead compartments. Excuse me?? How is there not enough room? So I had to walk with my laptop, my iPad, my Beats headphones, my laptop and iPad charger, amongst other things, in my hands to the aircraft. Thank goodness I found a plastic bag, because otherwise I probably would have lost something expensive on that plane. Furthermore, as I walked to my seat, there was most definitely places that I could have stowed my carry-on luggage in the overhead compartments. You shouldn't let people put things like purses and bags of food in the overhead, when those can be stowed underneath the seats in front."

Cons: "12+ hour flight with no working outlet to charge phone or headphones. When I asked to move to a seat that had a charger, they basically said no - even though there were about 20 open seats in the next "economy class" level. So for 6 hours, after my phone died, I basically stared at the wall and then had no phone to assist with my directions or hotel reservations once we landed. Food was not good. Plane was old, and had a few random screens playing a movie that kept freezing and had to be restarted."

No hotel, food voucher, etc. were provided blamed on the weather condition even though the bad weather was 1-2 days ago, and on the day of departure it was air traffic control problems which was stated in cancellation email."

Cons: "Dear United Airlines, It is my dearest wish that reading the following inflicts upon you at least a fraction of the stress, frustration, and pain that I have been through traveling with you today- you absolutely abhorrent excuse for a company. Due to your incomparable incompetence my arrival was inexcusably delayed almost 12 hours. An account follows: For a company who's customer service is already hanging by a very thin thread you would think that you would be doing everything to make your flights as smooth and pleasant as possible. Shall I elaborate on the utter frustration and boredom of being trapped in the San Francisco airport facing not one, not two, but what became SEVEN delays? Delays that have been caused by runway maintenance- a condition which someone in your company would have known about well before I got to the airport and that you simply did not plan for. A almost FOUR HOUR delay that could have been easily avoided if you just had things together and scheduled your planes around the affected runways. And let's not forget the additional delay caused when your flight crew simply couldn't be found to come to the gate so we could start getting underway! But no, I think the absolutely outstanding quintessential experience that defines flying with United airlines is this: After the above delays myself and my fellow passengers were finally able to board our flight- only to be told by the captain that there would be another brief delay while we waited for ANOTHER crew member because one of the pilots was near the end of their union hours. We sit on the plane stuck for another 20 minuets or so, only to be told they can't find anyone, and can we please get off the plane because our WHOLE FLIGHT is CANCELED. The kiosk I get to try and fix this is uncrowded but understaffed and run by clearly undertrained employees. The ones I'm dealing with keep having to ask each other for help, and give advice/plans that contradict one another. One of theme even takes what seems to be a personal call while 'assisting' me. When I finally get ahold of a supervisor I have to plead to get the next flight out of this godforsaken place, which I am reluctantly given as its with one of your competitors. Talking with other customer and airport staff is sounds very much like you are delaying/canceling flights for your own personal gain or at least not correcting flights around the situation to squeeze more money from the situation) it becomes quite clear that you are not only still incapable of accepting any real measure of accountability but entirely disgracefully unorganized. Almost 12 hours later I do finally make it home- thanks to American Airlines. Only to have the utter displeasure of one last interaction with United wherein when I pick up my bag your employees insist that I was delayed due to the weather and it wasn't your fault. It was entirely absolutely your fault."

Cons: "Was seated next to an obese woman and had to share my seat with her because of her size. I paid full price for a seat but only got to use 75% of it for a 5 hour long red eye flight. Very uncomfortable and very unfair"
Pros: "United is always a great way to fly. The crew is always nice and even through my delayed flight back to Vegas the captain stood between the walkway and plane an apologies and spoke to everyone which was new for me. Thanks united flight 455 to Vegas from SFO 10:44.."

Cons: "Excessively long layovers. I came home with 3 broken ribs and had to endure a 11 hour layover in Japan and another 6 hour layover in San Francisco."
Cons: "I understand the weather issue that occurred in ORD, but not letting the passengers know what was going on, except for delay, delay, delay was unacceptable, even after the weather calmed down. I will never fly United, thru ORD again"
Cons: "Plane didn't leave until 2.5 hours after expected departure time and we never got an actual reason why. This also made me miss my connecting flight so I had to spend an additional 6 hours in the airport waiting."
Cons: "Flight was delayed by two hours to wait for crew that was delayed elsewhere as they were coming off duty and had to presumably fly them back to Burbank so our entire flight was held to wait for them."
Pros: "Free new release movies available for free. Pretty good for a domestic flight. Lots of choices to choose from. Staffs were friendly, helpful, and attentive."
Cons: "No spaces left for carry-on luggage, even if I was able to put mine away. I felt bad for those after me."

Cons: "I collect disability each month so I am on a very tight budget. The Spanish speaking woman that pushed my wheelchair told me that I can bring my water bottles full of water through the metal detectors. I asked if she could take me somewhere to pour them out and refill them on the other side. They threw them away at the metal detector. So I had to buy a new bottle for my medicine that I have to take. You would think she would have got it by me carrying these bottles around but nope. She actually said to me that I can give her gratuity now if I wanted. I gave her $1. She then replied in a sarcastic voice " Thankyou you are soooo generous. I don't like feeling obligated to tip somebody because I am disabled and have a bullet in my head."

Cons: "The seats are uncomfortable to sleep in so I didn't sleep at all from San Francisco to Bradley; wished my seat had somewhere to plug my phone"
Pros: "I missed my flight and the front counter was very, very cheerful at 8pm and helpful. I was able to get on the last flight. There was no food or entertainment, but it's a short flight. I didn't really mind. Just happy to go home in comfort with my upgraded exit aisle seat and no one next to me."

Cons: "Pilot inability/unwillinngess to explain reason for 1 hour 45 minute delay departing SFO. Mechanical problem, disclosed just 30-45 minutes after take-off necessiated unplanned landing in Chicago, where we waited another 2 hours before finally taking off to Paris."
Cons: "My luggage got soaked in overhead compartment. Signed rare book was ruined by another passengers' luggage that leaked liquid and soaked my bag and contents inside."
Cons: "the first flight was delayed and i arrived at the destination 8 hours after the scheduled time and completely missed the appointment. Very disappointed."
Cons: "Since plane was delayed I missed my connecting flight so I had to stay the night in the San Fran airport for over 7 hours. For another 1 hour flight. With no accommodations or even a food voucher was just told to find a nice corner."

Cons: "I had to pay out of pocket to get a rental car then drive 4 hours to get to Redding to be at work on time. I am at work now and quite exhausted. I also was told it was cancelled due to weather when both San Francisco and Redding had clear skys. I waited over an hour and a half to get my bag, which I don't understand because the flight was cancelled and therefore communication should have been clear to bring those bag to baggage claim. The representatives that helped me were friendly, but I felt it was a business as usual situation with no concern about my inconvenience. Also I was not given any information about a refund and when I asked, I was referred to a website to figure it out on my own. Unforeseen incident, but zero attempt at service recovery."
