Your guide to booking Auckland flights

From booking to airport arrival, find tips to help you plan your flight with more confidence.
  • For the best chance at a low fare to Auckland, aim to book around 26 weeks before you fly. That window historically saves about 41% versus last-minute pricing based on KAYAK booking data over the last 12 months.
  • For flights to Auckland, recent KAYAK data shows that stronger deals tend to be around $175 return. If you see a fare below that threshold, it's a good deal – book before the price climbs back up.
  • If you can choose when to go, aim to travel to Auckland in March. Return fares historically average $211 that month – typically the cheapest month to travel based on the last 12 months.
  • Before you book:

    • Check the route's typical price range so you can spot a deal.
    • Confirm baggage fees and seat selection costs on budget carriers.
    • Verify whether you need any travel documents beyond an ID.
    • Pick a departure airport, since your nearest may not be the cheapest origin.
  • Shift your departure to evening to save up to $48 per return. Evening flights to Auckland average $237 compared to $285 for afternoon flights. See the time-of-day chart above for the full breakdown.
  • Bag allowances vary by airline, fare type, cabin class, and route. On flights to Auckland, some airlines may include bags at no extra cost. For example, Jetstar includes a cabin bag and a checked bag in Economy class, Air New Zealand includes a cabin bag and a checked bag in Economy class, and Air Chathams includes a cabin bag and a checked bag in Economy class. Always check the fare details before booking, since bag policies can change by ticket type.
  • Once you arrive in Auckland, a few great places to start are Sky Tower, Sparks Arena, and Viaduct Harbour. These are popular with first-time visitors and can give you a good feel for the area.
  • Auckland (AKL) is the largest airport on the North Island and provides access to towns such as Pokeno and Warkworth. While the neighboring cities of Hamilton (123 km) and Whangarei (158 km) both have airports, it may be cheaper to fly to Auckland and drive the remaining distance to these cities as Auckland Airport has far more scheduled flights.
  • The SkyBus is an easy and affordable way to reach the city centre from Auckland Airport. You can board the bus at the SkyBus stops in front of both the Domestic and International Terminals. A trip in to the city from the airport takes approximately 40-60 min depending on traffic and a discounted fare of NZ$ 17.50 can be secured if you purchase your ticket online.
  • If you are travelling with young children, there are Nursery Rooms available for your convenience within both terminals of Auckland Airport. In the Domestic Terminal you will find changing facilities and cots located adjacent to Door 1, while in the International Terminal there are rooms in between Doors 3 and 4.
  • A prayer room can be found directly across from the Air New Zealand check-in area at the Domestic Terminal of Auckland Airport.

More comfortable seats. Even after an hour of travel, they are very hard to sit on. Enforce the amount of stuff that travellers can carry on. Some have up to three bags and take over other passengers' overhead locker space.

Crew members are so courteous and easy to talk to. My flight ticket was expensive from Chicago to Rotorua at $2800 usd. Everything else is very nice!

Great first time experience with ANZ. Such a great customer service. The crew was very friendly and welcoming

Wonderful trip. Everyone from checking in to the gate to the flight itself was amazing - kind, helpful, and has a beautiful smile.

Air conditioning was turned to the wrong setting. Way too hot. The entertainment system kept resetting and didn’t work half the flight. Said something to the crew. They didn’t do anything to help. Plane had a mechanical problem that resulted in 2.5 hour delay. Boarded the plane, had to disembark and get back on.

It was good for a short domestic flight. As no food ar entertainment provided, there should be a n/a rating available for those.

Nothing special short flight - all good - difference between 1 fudge and 2 fudge is obligation and thankfulness

Major hassle with the weight of carryon luggage Having to repack bags at airport Not an issue in most of world Ridiculous issue considering the 400 pound gentleman sitting behind us

Short flight so no entertainment, turbulence so no food service - overall flight as expected

United flight from SFO to PDX was cancelled. I will ask for a refund. Had to book on Alaska

Great. Seats are a little cramped with only a very small recline. Service was great. Food was fine.

Jane at Sydney International airport check in was amazing. She set up the whole experience to be a positive one.

The flights got us to our destination. The seats on the planes were uncomfortable.

The flight ticket were not reimbursed on Jan 22nd from Auckland to Wellington. Very Very dissatisfied. Please reimburse the ticket of my onward travel.

I was treated poorly in Dunedin by check in crew, then my bag was lost in Auckland. Never again.

They added the weight of my back to the carryon luggage and charged me NZ$75 for being over 7 kg.

a constant reminder that you need to work harder so you can avoid this airline

The price difference/saving isn't sufficient to compensate the experience difference, don't recommend unless flight is under 3 hours. Huge queues for check in and the priority lane of other ailines blocked checked in Jetstar passengers from proceeding through to screening. Gate change to a "dungeon gate" that didn't have toilets in the vicinity. 45minute delay in boarding, no updates or explaination, let alone apology for any inconvenience. 1 scanner working for a full fight to board, no coordination. Loaded on to crowded buses to get on the plane in the middle of the tarmac, up stairs with no explaination. 4 bus trips. No system for boarding in sections. Over an hour late departing. Nothing complimentary, not even water or in-flight music. Pay wave not available and no cash sales. Staff onboard were friendly and professional.

Flight departing too early at 06.15 Difficult to get to airport

Plane was more than 3 hrs delayed as the only plane on that day. Had to wait 1 hrs in the plane which was very unpleasent.
