Cons: "Flight was initally delayed 1 1/2 hours to depart at 1:00am it happens. Upon boarding, I noticed the planes legroom was close to none. Within 10 minutes of being on the plane the power shut off, lights out, air flow cut off. Lights turn back on although air doesn't and the captain re assures 10-15 minutes. 2 1/2 hours yes 2 1/2 hours later he says 10-15 minutes again and says the same skit explaining they fixed the problem. Plane turned off again. At this time it was close to 5am and I chose to take my carry on and head towards the front of the plane. The captain has no answers for the alarmed passengers, in which all they could say is if we step off tge plane we choose to leave the flight. Almost in the tone of a threat. We were all fewring our safety for the 9 hour trek over the pacifac ocean. After going back and forth for about 45 mins they finally said if you dont feel comfortable follow me and we will try and locate later flights for you all. 60 of us left the plane and ultimately got flights 12-24 hours later. Horrible experience, horrible communication, no appologies, and on top of that they did not send my bag with the correcr plane, in which I had recieved it 4 days later. My replacement flight wqs on EVA air. Much better airline in which I will never travel with China Airlines ever again."

Even though easily +90% of the passengers were Americans, Australians, New Zealanders and Europeans, and that the flight was between 2 English speaking countries, we were addressed in Mandarin Chinese. Reminds me a bit of Air Canada with their often French bias."

Cons: "Things I disliked: Boarding. I got my seat assignment weeks early, back of the plane and aisle, Boarding Zone 1. Check! Once at the gate, specialty groups boarded first (small children, first class). As the were boarding (LAX), the throngs lined up willy-nilly. The gate agents did not call for boarding by zones, all the passengers boarded together (mixed zones). This is a recipe for disaster. I was one of the last persons to board, and by the time I got to my seat (back of the plane), all the overhead bins were full (folks in the middle of the plane could not find overhead room, so they marched to the back and took my space). Had I boarded by zone (#1), I would have gotten to the back early. F/A's struggled greatly to get everyone's carryon stowed overhead, but a number of us had our carryons stowed many rows away from our seats. Also, the bins were so full, that they were dangerously heavy, and even the F/A's had to have help in closing them. Great! We were discouraged from opening the overheads in flight (near-constant turbulence). Great! Can't get at my stuff during the long night flight (its in a bin way in front of me, and we can't open the bins). Entertainment unit on the seatback. The system is fine, but its touch-screen, and my 'touch' screen was not accepting my inputs very well (had to touch them half a dozen times each). There is no remote control (handheld). Never watched anything, as we never were given headphones. Use your own headphone, you say? Where does that bad boy plug in, I say? That kind of thing should be explained in the pre-flight video, possibly. Blissfully I slept thru a good chunk of the flight."

I know flight catering is a tricky business, but mayonnaise can be put on the side, instead of directly on the sandwich. No full beverage service. If this is the ROC's flagship airline, I'd hate to see what their budget airlines are like."

Jetstar should state up front in the flight cost area about their baggage fees, not hidden in the fine print. A side note, everything on the flight cost extra; water, Wi-Fi, etc. Once the added fees are calculated into the cost, Jetstar is not cheaper than the other airlines."

It cost me NZ$ 215 to heck my two bags (one was admittedly heavy, but that is still an insane amount). I knew I would have to pay for bags but more money because of something that I was unable to adress is absurd."

Had to throw out clothes and shoes to meet weight requirements as they charge $25 a kilogram for extra weight which was not disclosed when we received our confirmation. We were the only ones hassled over being a few kilos over each. Many people hand large luggage carry ons which wouldn't even fit in the luggage testers yet no one said anything to them. 90 percent of the people were easily over the 7KG weight allowance for carry on luggage and were not hassled at all. It was pure discrimination and perhaps it was because I was italian or my wife had blond hair. Who knows. I have been on hundreds of flights in my life and have never been so humiliated in my life. The blonde luggage counter and boarding ticket taker, was insulting and even insisted on seeing our australian visitors permit which is not required according to Australian customs once you have paid for it and are registered. She even tried to force my wife to check her bag even though it fit in their luggage sizing testers. Another tall lady with glasses at the luggage check in area, was also very insulting and discriminated against us. Horrible experience. Both of those people would be fired if I was running the airline. Its a service business and while I understand rules, you have to have some discretion and if your going to enforce them, they must apply to all passengers, not just 2 people out of 150!"

Thankfully we went to the airport early, were told to look at our confirmation online from the check in folks and found absolutely nothing regarding baggage there . and ended up paying for our bags at a reasonable rate because it was prior to check in ; however , other travelers were not so fortunate and ended up paying $70 per check through bag because it was literally impossible to find any place to check them in and people were stuck in a difficult situation without a choice . additionally we were told that we were only allowed 7 kg poor person carry on Travelers beware of this - to our knowledge it happened to international travelers, May have been New Zealander as well but are not sure about that . additionally we were told that we were only allowed 7 kg per person for our carry-on total carry on. This also is nowhere to be found on the Jetstar website !!!! for every killer that you are over you are charged an additional $15! We did arrive safely and the flight was fine ."

Using Jetstar was supposed to be an economical choice but given the baggage fees it ups the total and takes them out of consideration for me. I will not use them in the future, you inform people in advance, not hide fees until check in. I don't trust them now."

Cons: "Had to carry carry-on suit case up and down stairs when boarded the plane. Based on the seat, half of the passengers boarded through regular ramped hall way, half boarded through back door that went downstairs to get out of the building, then up the stairs to the airplane. In Auckland airport international terminal, all passengers had to weight their carry-on and personal bags, and if it's more than seven kg, you have to check it in. This was the first time I experienced that. I bought gifts in the airport and planned to buy more. Our carry ons were a few kg over the limit, and we were sent back to the check in counter, where we just got our boarding passes and no warnings were given. We were lucky we had plenty of time during this transfer to go through all the back and forth hassles. Paying the extra $$ for the surprise check ins was not pleasant. There was another scale at the gate counter, which totally cancelled my shopping plan. To be fair, weight limit was not enforced when we boarded the plane, but you never know when that scale will be used. During the flight, I asked a flight attendant for water, and she told me to get it myself pointing the curtain half a plane away. Another new experience. This was the first time we took Jetstar, and on the way to New Zealand, we didn't feel it was too much different from the other airlines we flew before except you have to pay for everything from a cup of tea to meals and entertainment, and of course we didn't go through Auckland. The return trip really made us realize you get what you pay for."
