The location is perfect, down the street from food trucks, great restaurants, and only a short walk to great tax-free shopping. We will definitely consider staying here again.

Cons: Our room had a slight odor of dogs / animals. This should be somewhat expected in a pet-friendly hotel, and is only really noticeable once you walk in the room. All-in-all, this was a minor gripe and will not deter us from staying here again.

Cons: Because I used the door knocker that said I didn't need sheets and towels changed, no one ever came to my room to take the garbage or give us more TP, etc. thankfully there was an extra roll in the room. And one of the valet guys was rude to my uber driver when she came to pick us up. It was uncalled for.

Cons: As a frequent traveler, I've stayed in my fair share of hotels of varying degrees of comfort. Upon checking into the Paramount hotel, I was very pleased with the hotel and my room- however, my pleasant experience stopped there.
At 1 AM my first night, the guest in the room next to me was being overly disruptive. I finally called the front desk, spoke to April, and hoped it would be taken care of. The guest continued to be loud and I woke up every hour- at one point she was screaming at a hotel employee that he was assaulting her- until I called again at 4 AM and was told that the guest was being escorted out. However, this process was also loud and kept us up until close to 5 AM- and ultimately, the hotel took 4 hours to solve a problem that I called about at 1 AM.
I understand that a loud neighbor is not the hotel's fault- what happened next was. I never received any sort of follow up from them, explaining or apologizing for our terrible night.
Since I was not contacted, I stopped by the front desk and spoke to Jeremy- he was rude and did not apologize or offer any explanation as to what happened or what compensation we could expect.
I stopped the desk a second time and requested that a manager call me on my cell phone- I was going to be out of my room all day. I left my cell phone number with Jeremy- and received no call.
I returned to the hotel around 7PM and once again approached the front desk- I was told there was no available manager and that I wouldn't be able to speak to one until 9 AM the next morning (after I was already expected to check out). Finally, Charlie at the front desk was able to get a hold of a manager who said that she had tried calling my room (even after I specified that I would be out all day and specifically left my cell phone number) and that they would compensate one night of my valet parking ($39).
Through all of this, I still never spoke to a manager and never received a formal apology (though a manager did call me on my flight back to New York the next day). Overall, the horrible customer service and miscommunication of the hotel staff left me upset and, frankly after the events of the night before, unsafe. For the cost of this hotel, I expected better service and a better compensation for my lost night of sleep. My stay was handled in an unprofessional manner- I certainly will not be returning and urge others to choose other accommodations when visiting Portland.

Maybe other rooms in the hotel have been updated, but my room was not. I also faced a very load street/area so I would recommend asking for an updated room (if they have any), and for a room in a quiet location.

Cons: Parking was not explained very well, and expensive. The valets ignored us for over 10 min before we drove off and parked in the garage that was less than a block away. Turned out to be the same garage the valet uses, and has a tunnel connected to the hotel. Room was dark due to only having one small window in the corner.

Cons: It felt like the Tower of Terror, staff was rude when checking us in, room felt gross and was ridiculously small and crammed in a corner. The lady at the front desk quoted us an insanely high price, and when I said cheaper was available online she said “well I guess you should book that then.” When to check in 5 minutes later and felt like she deliberately gave us the worst room furthest from the elevator on the lowest floor. They were also under construction which I didn’t realize till I was in the room and there was a piece of paper informing me. Amenities were a joke. Regret booking this place when there were a dozen better options in the same area.

Cons: My room (1212) was quite small, especially the bathroom. Because I wanted a single large bed and the hotel was pretty full, I think maybe I had that oddball room that most older hotels have that are squeezed into a non-regular space. In this case, it also happened to be near housekeeping, which was noisy in the morning with carts being banged around. The room was fine but smaller than one might expect. The bathroom was ok for me but would have been an issue for someone who spends more time getting ready. There was not even enough room to stand squarely in front of the tiny sink because a bookcase/shelving unit was put on the wall right in the area in front of sink. I had to shave at an odd angle, off to the side of the sink.

Cons: The fitness center was disappointing in size and equipment available. It reminded me of fitness centers in 2 & 3 star hotels.
On line it said there was a coffee/shop and bakery at the hotel and there were none.
Online it also implies there was a spa but there was not. The front desk clerk said they could call someone off site to come to our room.
One tiny window in the room.
Paid approx $350 a night. Way too expensive for what it was.

Even got a free upgrade on the room since we were there for only a night which was a huge and wonderful surprise. The room itself was clean and modern and the bed made me want to stay forever. Cons: I only gave this place three stars because the windows are only single pain which made our room very noisy. Lots of street noise and loud music from the club down the street. We went there to hang out down town but would also appreciate a good night sleep. Also the rate on kayak was the same as I could get just booking direct with the hotel.

Pros: The hotel is in a great location and upon entering all you see is a grand lobby decorated completely for Christmas. The checkin/check out process was incredibly easy and the staff was friendly. Even got a free upgrade on the room since we were there for only a night which was a huge and wonderful surprise. The room itself was clean and modern and the bed made me want to stay forever. The hotel offered complementary drinks at night which was a nice surprise and the morning breakfast was such a great experience as compared to other hotel's "breakfasts". Cons: The hotel is outdated and is in need of upgrade. Not the friendliest staff at front desk. talked like robots reading from a script. You dont get much for the amount you pay for nightly stay. The internet is not included and you have to pay extra to use in the room. The place is centrally located in downtown Portland, so if you're there for business in downtown area, I guess it would be okay, but for leisure, its not the best place to stay. It didnt seem very safe to be out after dark, and not too many places are open late. A lot of panhandlers roam the streets around the hotel.

Pros: Hotel Rose is what it is: a recently renovated motel. It's clean and comfortable, and staff are friendly. But to call it a four-star hotel is a real stretch, in terms of amenities and service. Compared to other downtown luxury hotels, this is a big step down at the same price.
Cons: The bathroom is tiny, with outdated fixtures and mold stains. The provided toiletries are cheesy Tommy Bahama brand with an intense pina colada scent that I was a bit embarrassed to smell like all day.
The bed only comes with a comforter, strangely folded on top of a bare fitted sheet, so you have to make your own bed. The king bed comes with two of these, each covering half the bed. Just weird. When I asked the front desk for room service to give me a top sheet, I was told I could find one in the closet and to make the bed myself.

Pros: It happened to be 100 degrees that day in Portland and my air conditioning in the room went out. They immediately came to my room and while facilities management couldn't fix it they moved me very quickly to new room and one with a better view.
Cons: I arrived in Portland at 9 am ( I know check in time is 4 pm) but I travel often and it's generally never a problem to get a room by noon. They told me they would call me when a room was ready. I called at 1:30 pm to see what the eta of my room would be. The front desk woman at that time was short and seemed put out when she said "it's ready". Don't offer a call back service if you aren't going to follow through.

Staff were friendly and accommodating. There was construction going on so lobby level elevators were roped off for the evening so guests had to walk up two flights of stairs to gain access to the elevators.
It appeared the construction crew was cognizant of cleaning up and they kept the worksite swept. However, on the 20th floor the glass table near the elevator looked as though it hadn't been dusted in several days. There was enough dust to write ones name on the glass!
On a positive note, the employees at the front desk were very helpful at check in.

Cons: Due to snow and ice storm I had to cancel. The hotel was fine with it. It was within their 24 hours. Unfortunately, the company I used on kayak stated I would have needed to cancel on the same date that I reserved!!!!! Are you kidding me? Don't reserve through them. They do not care what terms the hotel has.

Cons: Because of my back to back reservations, the digital key would not work during the 2nd reservation. The digital key is super convenient so I missed not being able to use it the last 2 nights, but it wasn’t a big deal to carry the key card.
The only other suggestion is as a conference attendee: I’m a big water drinker and carry a water bottle throughout the day. There had been plenty of water to refill my bottle but it would have been nice if I could have filled my container with ice too.

Cons: While the Hilton is very convenient, there are some problems with this hotel compared to other hotels in this class. While free parking is not included, there is pay-to-park available from the hotel, but the hotel charges twice as much as the parking garage that is just around the corner(price gouging is not okay.) When I tried to ask staff about the private parking garage, they did everything they could to talk me out of it. Don't pay the excessive Hilton parking charge.
I am finding that most hotels these days provide free internet in the rooms and in the lobby. I travel and stay at world-class hotels at least twice a month. So I broke down and paid for the premium internet access at the Hilton. It was far from premium. Not the slowest I have ever seen, but close to it.
Also, at this level of hotel, I would expect all the rooms to have charging facilities for electronic devices. Sad to say, but the technical comfort of the room was anything but hi-tech!!

Cons: The walls were paper thin! Twice we had a grumpy neighbor come and bang on our adjacent door telling us to quiet down. first time we were enjoying some wine and we did get in a bit late, so understandable. The second night we were simply watching a movie at 8pm. Ridiculous thing to deal with considering how much we payed to stay there. In the mornings when they woke up I could hear them arguing over itineraries and even zipping up their luggage. Careful those walls are THIN!! This was the executive king room.

Pros: I loved the front desk staff and the valet staff. Upon checking in, the front desk staff was extremely helpful with tips on activities in the area and food and restaurant choices. They didn't sound rehearsed with their suggestions. They really seemed enthusiastic about their choices which made us enthusiastic about trying them out. The valet staff was extremely friendly and helpful as well. We left some items in our car that they had parked for us and they offered to retrieve them for us while we waited in the lobby. They greeted us every time we walked in and out the door and just seemed happy to be working there and not just working for tips. The customer service was greatly appreciated!

Pros: I checked into Hotel Moderna after a very long day of traveling and checking out of another hotel because if wasn't clean or at all what I was looking for. The guy behind the front desk, after hearing of my travel troubles, offered me free drinks in the hotel restaurant to make my day better. He also gave me a map of the city and marked his favorite places to hang out in sharpie. The front desk staff went above and beyond to accommodate me, which is exactly what I needed after the day I had.

Cons: The main negative comment I have is that their elevator is rickety and loud. I guess because we checked in at night, we got stuck with the room next to the elevator and you really can hear it every time it goes up and down. Luckily, we were just so exhausted from our daytime activities, we didn't have the energy to complain. Also, the housekeeping staff was a little intimidating. At around 4pm, we went back to our hotel room to freshen up and noticed that our room had still not been made. No big deal. We saw the housekeeping staff in the hallway and decided to tell them they can skip our room, but we wanted an extra towel and a new garbage bag. When we asked them, the staff member demanded my hotel room number in a harsh tone and when I told her, she then shouted to her co worker in another language some verbiage while pointing at us. They had a conversation, that sounded like an argument to me, for a few minutes while we were standing there waiting for the OK to skip our room and give us a towel. Mind you, they were standing right next to the towel cart conversing in their language while I was standing there confused.

Pros: I checked into Hotel Moderna after a very long day of traveling and checking out of another hotel because if wasn't clean or at all what I was looking for. The guy behind the front desk, after hearing of my travel troubles, offered me free drinks in the hotel restaurant to make my day better. He also gave me a map of the city and marked his favorite places to hang out in sharpie. The front desk staff went above and beyond to accommodate me, which is exactly what I needed after the day I had.

The hotel is located right next to a light rail stop which makes it convenient to get around town. I found using the rail to see Portland easier than renting a car, however if you plan on going outside the city a car is a good idea.
The bed was pretty comfortable and the room was clean. I would likely stay here again but in what the hotel calls a "Comfort King" that has a few more amenities such as fridge (if you are like me and like to keep a few snacks around).
There is a courtyard and pool area that was well maintained. Several softballs teams attending a tournament monopolized the area in the late afternoon/evening making it essentially unusable for other guests.

Cons: However, nothing works (card key, hair dryer, old cathode tube TV, etc..). Coffee pack not replaced the 2nd day. Window-type air heater making noise - when heating off the room cooled down immediately. All things considered - a poor choice for a leisure trip. Probably ok for prospective students, the campus might look more appealing (by contrast) after spending the night here.
It is NOT close to downtown - yes you can walk it but it takes 15 min through non-inspiring neighborhood. Also - remember the extra $15 for parking - there is no street parking outside unless you're ok with walking 10 minutes, hence the gauging.
My bottom line: I would advise against booking this one for any non-university function.

Cons: The room I stayed in, Standard King, was very dated. The carpet had holes worn in some spots. The electrical switch in the bathroom and an outlet in the room were not mounted correctly in their sockets.
This type of room is quite basic. No fridge, no microwave, lamps were mismatched (the desk lamp had a burnt out bulb that maintenance never replaced). The furniture and wallpaper were most likely from the 80's.
I found the rooms cooling/heating unit never shut off. It seemed to never get to a pre-set temperature, it just ran and ran. If you are sensitive to background noise this will be an issue.
The breakfast buffet was alright. It did not offer much in the way of selections. Even fresh fruit was kept to just bananas, oranges or apples.
I had a veggie burger at the Lincoln Street Grill in the hotel for dinner one night. The salad that came with it was just iceberg lettuce, diced tomato and cucumber. No frills. The burger was alright and the price was affordable.

Cons: You get what you pay for! Stains in the carpet, nightstands blocked outlets and switches (easy enough to move, but still), very thin walls so able to hear (and feel!) the streetcars movements and other guests. Biggest downside was that the room key was similar to USB stick, so easy to lose (I did) and had to pay $5 to replace it. Reasonable enough fee but had it been a traditional 'credit card' style it would have gone in my wallet and not been lost.
