Cons: The street noise. We requested a quiet room at check-in, but were told that none were available. We were in room 14, first floor and immediately above the bus stop on the High Street. We were kept awake until 4 00 am by drunk students, sirens and traffic noise. In excess of £400 is an awful lot of money to pay for 3 hours sleep.

Cons: The bathroom was not en suite to this room but down some stairs; this information did not appear on the booking.com website until after I had paid for the room and appeared in the confirmation information. It wasn't a problem for us but might be for some guests. The wifi code provided to my friend at check in didn't work and there was no information in the room as to how to contact the owner/manager of the guest house if there were any problems. There was no hand soap in the separate bathroom.

Cons: The bed was tooooo soft which other people may like but for my bad back wasn't that great. Also the shower didn't stay very hot for long as I like super hot showers. The second night someone set off a fire alarm and it kept going off, but once I called the managers they were very quick to respond and check things out and also made sure that the guests were fine. So that negative actually turned into a positive.

Cons: The internet. I never connected. I just used my phone and data plan. I reported the problem, but all that was said was that it would be referred to IT. I think it had something to do with my using a Mac and airport.

Pros: This is a difficult review, because of work being carried out directly below one wing of the hotel by another business entity, so we had to complain and change rooms. The first room was pretty nice, spacious and comfortable, but the lighting was poor. The second room was very nice, it was one of the converted Cells in the original building, a bit smaller but still comfortable and a better bathroom as well. The beds in both rooms were very comfortable. The staff were very good and friendly and sorted the issues very well. The hotel location is excellent for visiting Oxford, it's at the western end of the main street which is only 10-15 minutes walk from the Colleges and the famous Bodleian Library as well as being next door to the new Westgate shopping centre. It's great to have on-site and secure car parking, even if they do charge £28.50 per night. Parking anywhere in Oxford is a nightmare

Pros: The location was perfect for exploring Oxford. The hotel was very atmospheric and cleverly designed, making the most of the old prison features and the staff were really friendly and helpful. My bedroom was spacious, well equipped and had a comfortable bed. All in all a really positive experience.

Cons: Hotel car park cramped, town car park 10min walk away. Took ages to find as the hotel is not easily signposted. Bathroom floor dirty, radiator was coming away from the wall and had an air block in it, noise was like a building site, no other rooms available to move to. Lounge in bar area very small and the seats were heavily stained , staff very ignorant and slow, preferred juggling with bottles rather than serve, hence we were fed up and walked away without a drink.

Cons: The continental breakfast was a bit limited and for £15 wasn't great value, having the cooked breakfast for £17 was a better option. The restaurant is in the old lower level and it's a bit dark, especially in the evening and while the lunch and evening meals that we had were OK, we found better ones within 10-15 minutes walk around the city.

Cons: Poor service at check-in. Waited 15mins as only one desk open. Eventually a young man came along - gave us our keys with no directions so we assumed we followed other guests to the elevator. We then spent another 20 minutes trying to find our room, waiting for elevators when eventually we found another member if staff who was helpful and informed us that our room was in a different part of the building. We went back to reception and now very frustrated. We asked the same young man who had checked us in and he didn’t know where our room was. He asked another member of staff who gave him some directions and then said he would take us. He still didn’t know how to get to our room and it was another guest who showed us. Whilst we had an enjoyable stay - finding our room was not a good experience.

Pros: This hostel is amazing, I’d definitely recommend booking it for a short stay in Oxford! It is situated a 5 min walk away from the train station and 5-7 min walk away from the Main Street in Oxford. I stayed in the 6-bed female only room which was great - the beds were comfortable, my bed was already made when I arrived, the room was a decent size, lockers were available in the room, each bed had a charging port. The staff were super helpful - they took me on a tour of the hostel facilities when I first arrived and were available to provide recommendations for things to see and do in Oxford. The hostel has a large, well equipped kitchen with free tea and coffee, a TV room, an outdoor terrace area with a bar and a dining room/common area. There were several toilets and showers available at different spots around the hostel. The wifi was also great! All in all - I really enjoyed my stay and would highly recommend the hostel.

Cons: There were lots of stairs to climb to enter the hostel - but this won’t be an issue unless your bag is too heavy to lift. The beds in my room didn’t have reading lights but this was only a minor issue.

It has of course been through bad times in its history (including some of those times when I have stayed)- and in common with many other such long-lasting hotels - however it seems currently to be aware of its strengths as a large but comfortable hotel in the centre of the city, and is neither impersonal, flashy, pretentious, nor noisy. I asked for a quiet room, which, although it was at the front of the hotel, was exactly what I was given. A warm, courteous reception and an efficient, polite and considerate check out receptionist. I hope the ethos remains should the hotel have to rely on staff trained solely in the U.K.

Cons: There is, for me, little on which to comment negatively. The carpet in the room was a little grubby, but otherwise all the surfaces were clean, and the upholstery and curtains were all in good condition.

Cons: We were in a room with heavy scaffolding blocking the entire two windows. Men were talking, yelling & working/pounding in front of the two windows every morning. They totally ignored us who needed sleeping in the room. There were no privacy nor courtesy. We were not informed or asked if it's Ok for the reception to assign such a downgraded room (the windows were blocked by scaffolding entirely)to us at check in either. The service and facilities were at most a one star hotel this time. I stayed in this hotel for about 5 times in the last two years because we were visiting our daughter who was studying at Worcestor college(one block away). They've been always about a three stars hotel standard. But this time was the worst. We will not use this hotel any more. It's totally not worth the price & the poor facility.

Cons: Uber doesn't have a permit to operate in Oxford, so we asked the reception to call us a cab. The cab company apparently cancelled our request, and we ended up missing our train. This is not the hotel's fault, but they do need to find a better company to partner with.

Cons: The shower in our room sprayed EVERYWHERE, so I had to go buy a shower cap just to be able to shower. Ended up showering in the bathroom down the hall. Also, no WiFi upstairs/in the rooms. This was super inconvenient as I was in Oxford for work. Unfortunately, this would have been a deal breaker had I known, and I wouldn’t stay again because of it. Highly recommend the hostel to catch up to every other hostel I’ve been to and make WiFi available throughout!

Cons: 1. Since the railway station is so close, I could hear trains in my room. But that didn’t prevent me from sleeping well at night, maybe because we kept our windows closed (it was cold in November). In fact, the cars are far noisier - a problem for the rooms facing the street. 2. The showers are weird, they are designed in such a way that you cannot avoid cold water pouring onto you each time you turn the water on or off. But at least there was hot water on all days, so not a big problem. Also the water drained too slowly in the sink in our room. 3. Each bed has usb chargers, but some of them didn’t work. 4. The weekends can be very busy. A big group of teenagers moved in, and due to their group booking I was told to change my room (including check-out before 10, storage of your packed things during the day, and check-in in the evening - so annoying!). The teenagers were very noisy, some of them got drunk and started running along the corridors at 3 am, knocking persistently on the doors. We opened the door to find a drunk girl who rushed inside and claimed in a loud voice that it was her bed. 5. No wifi in the rooms. I connected to wifi in the lobby but it was slow and got disconnected quickly.

Cons: Considering we had spoken to the hotel prior to our stay explaining it is our honeymoon and asking expressing concerns over renovations that we had read in other reviews (we were reassured these wouldn't disrupt our stay), we did not get the warm welcome we were hoping for. The staff were courteous but that was it - considering it is a 'luxury' hotel, not what we were expecting. On the first morning that renovations were taking place outside our door - wonderful! Having booked a luxury room, we were hoping to spend the morning relaxing however much to our surprise, the drills started going and we opened our door to find a (very nice) group of men taking off the main door adjacent to ours. The next morning, an electrician changing plugs in the corridor - again the noise disturbing us. Having spoken to the hotel specifically about this before booking and having been reassured by the hotel that our stay wouldn't be disturbed...well you can imagine our disappointment. There were also little things missing in the room - a drinks menu, the TV applications didn't work (apparently a wider hotel issue) etc. not at all major, but when you choose to spend more on the luxury suite, you would think the basics would be there. We did have a lovely time in Oxford itself and the room was adequate, but we wouldn't stay again and definitely wouldn't recommend if you are aiming for luxury.

At the Hotel we were told that the breakfast was not at the property, but when we reached the cafe indicated they knew nothing about our breakfast voucher. The staff at the cafe was not even willing to call but sent us back to the Hotel - in the Hotel there was nobody at reception. Eventually another person came by saying we don’t have to pay at the end, still the entire experience was disappointing and time consuming which was the exact thing we were trying to avoid.

Cons: I chose this hotel based on the 24 hour reception and checked that my late arrival (12.15am) would be no issue. However, when I arrived, I was greeted at reception with a "Back in 5 Mins sign", I waited for 15 mins but nobody arrived. I called the number on booking.com which was answered, but I was hung up on before anyone spoke. I waited, in case somebody would appear at reception but when this did not happen I called again, clearly waking up the gentlemen manning the reception. By this point it was 45 minutes after I arrived and I just wanted to go to bed!! When I reached my room, I was hugely disappointed. It was nothing like the photographs on booking.com, lacking any throws, cushions or colour. It had a certain stale sweat smell and it certainly was not a room that could justify an £85 a night fee. What's more, the room was extremely noisy from the club smoking area outside the window. I would not recommend this hotel.

Cons: The room was very small with a view of the roof and all air conditioning units that were quite noisy. For £165 you’d expect a hairdryer but there was none. We didn’t get to sleep until gone 2.30 when the music stopped in the nightclub below the hotel, so that was disappointing as it wasn’t the peaceful night you’d expect, I wouldn’t class it as a hotel it’s more like a B & B you’d find in Blackpool. Don’t pay £15 for breakfast when whetherspoons or the fire station cafe are on the same road.

Pros: Large room with comfy bed. Very clean but bathroom needs a new door handle inside. Very hospitable host and very friendly. Would go back as ideal for central location. Plenty of clean towels and tea/coffee facilities in the room.
Cons: No heating in the bathroom which was needed for cold evening and morning in November.

Cons: Room we booked was already given to someone. We had to wait 30mins in an horrible back room to get it back. Over looking the very noisy bus station that keep their engines idling all night. Great for the environment...and noisy. Clubbing music next door unbearably loud prevented us to sleep. I strongly advise not stay there

Cons: Noise - I guess it's expected being over a bar but the bass from the music reverberated through the floor.

Pros: A very helpful young Brazilian in Reception chatted to me while my room was being prepared. I would like to see him promoted to Manager. He makes a very good impression for the hotel.

Cons: The room we had was either the worst in the whole place ( cold water only in the sink, shower moldy) or the photos online are not representative of the place.
It’s a student hotel/hostel.

Cons: Nothing in particular. I knew the hotel was next to the main bus station so was expecting the noise but it actually wasn't that bad. The room itself could probably do with a bit of tlc but on the whole for the price and location it was worth it.

Cons: Noisy and a couple of rude members of staff. Room 8 & 10 - we struggled getting in and out of the rooms keys locks doors werent right.
