Check in at Auckland airport was very quick and highly automated, however, our gate was not posted till one hour before the flight, so we did not know where was the best place to sit and wait."

Why would you serve something like curry on an airplane that’s not at all agreeable to at least half the people on the plane and then force the rest of us to eat it when you run out of the other option? My seat recliner was broken so I got to sit straight up for 12 hours."

Pros: "Booked these flights though Kayak. Landing from LAX at 0730 at Auckland international terminal and then departing at 0900 from the domestic terminal. This is not enough time, doesn’t allow for customs and immigration. It was a really stressful experience running between terminals with my luggage, as there was less than a 1 hour window after getting through customs and immigration, so the bag drop at international wouldn’t accept them. Got to departure gate 12 minutes before plane departure. You need more time to have a good experience !"

Also, the flight times AKL-YVR and YVR-AKL are so civilized! You leave each city around dinner time, you dine, you watch a movie, sleep as much as you want, have breakfast, and then it's time to land! Way better than other options that leave at odd times."

I was lucky to have an empty middle seat (which merits the "good" rating over the "okay"), but even with that, maneuvering was difficult (trying to get stuff from the carry on stored beneath the seat, etc.). Things got worse when the person in front of me decided to put his chair back all the way into my face."

Pros: "I was on flight nz10 from Auckland to hawaii 3/28th. Loved the crew, they got us on board quickly and we would have taken off on time but had to wait for 2 people showing up late. Anyway, it was a redeye so people slept for most of it and I watched movies and drank wine. The airplane was clean and bathroom were as well. It was a full flight so a little cramped."

Cons: "For some unknown reason, I can not lower my seat when I wanted to get some sleep. As the air plane took off at 11:55pm, I was really sleep. After 10 minutes of maneuver, I decided to ask a flight attendant to help me figure out what happened to my seat. I pressed the button asking for attendant and waited for 5 minutes, no response. So I pressed the button again. IT showed that I had already pressed the button. So I kept waiting. But then no one ever came for me the 9 hours until it was time for the meal before getting off. Sitting straight sleeping was a really terrible experience!"

I was able to meet up with my son who flew them from SFO and fly on to Cambodia together. Guangzhou airport is stellar, clean, spacious, and transit was comfortable. Cons: "I was flying to Delhi & it was an emergency situation for me bcz i lost my Dad & i was flying to perform the cremation of my Dad. And thing this was informed to the China Southern officials so that they could arrange something for me. I requested them to put me into another flight for which i was ready to pay the whole amount but no one listen to my request & i had to wait so long. I was amazed to see that no one was keen to understand my problem at both he airports i.e. Auckland Airport & Ganzhaou Airport. Apart from this the behavior of your officials was so rude & arrogant it made me feel as if i was a slave or some kind of culprit. Due to the ignorance & laid back attitude on your part i couldn't reach my destination on my time. Seriously it took me "24 hrs Extra" to reach my destination & as a result of which i couldn't perform the cremation. I was pissed off by the service; complete ignorance by the staff/officials of ur airlines. I wasn't expecting this kind of treatment from a reputed company like you. I request you guys to look into this matter seriously and try to take some corrective measures so that this thing won't happen in future with someone else."

Airlines close check-in for flights 30 mins before departure time to ensure that all bags make it onto the plane. I was 3 hours early. Don't know why they 'didn't have time'. They also broke my friend's bag."

Cons: "The food was something you can get on the average street corner in Shanghai for about 1.00 USD. I understand costs are important, but a steamed piece of bread and a foil packet of pickled vegetables is a bit of a stretch. The gate agents were less than helpful. I usually get an upgrade with my Delta status on partner airlines. Nope, not on this flight. I requested it and they said it is not possible on China Southern. I showed them my boarding pass from less than 48 hrs before on the same airline... they looked bewildered. Boarding was the usual "every man for himself". Zones? Classes? Awards members? Not in Shenzhen..."

Cons: "Well, we had air traffic control delays, and I was hoping we would learn a little more about how long we would wait before getting another update etc. - i.e. the communication wasn't great. I appreciated that they let us off the plane though after a certain amount of time. Also, the signs (including China Southern Air signs) in the airport are not extremely helpful for telling you where to go after the customs when you land and before picking up your new ticket and going to the customs you will need to go through to depart. Having some guidance from someone after you depart the plane or after entry customs would have been really nice."

Pros: "Attendants are friendly and nice, their limited English makes them seem cold however I speak both languages and they have better manners than my experience with American carriers such as UA, American and Delta, particularly to the elderly and those that do not speak Chinese. Legroom is decent, seat cushions need more padding for long haul flights. Power supply working well, mediocre movie selection, on time departure and arrival. Food needs improvement. I was told my meal was beef and rice, however, it was fried fish."

CHINA EASTERN web site is horrible. When I was booking for seats, only showed 2 available seats and I had no choice. When I boarded the plane there were many empty seats. That is the trick the airlines play."

Cons: "The exit rows (with more room and responsibility) were all available yet no one was offered an upgrade or the option to change seats and the food options were limited if they were, in fact, even edible. Additionally, the beverage service was limited and sporadic, and the second meal offering was given maybe two hours prior to landing in a very rushed manner. Also, the intercom system for announcements is absolutely jarring with a great amount of static, so while absolutely a necessary system, it should be lowered to a less shocking decibel level."

They kept speaking to me in Mandarin, a language I do not understand and when I tell them I don't understand they get extremely annoyed and will repeat in english in a very annoyed tone. Service was horrible, when my friends and I tried to request for more water they pretended like they did see us or hear us. Overall, I will never fly with this airline ever again."
Pros: "The ticket counter at Osaka refused to issue our tickets. They claimed our transfer time was too short and made us wait at the ticket counter at Osaka for hour and half. Only after my insistence they issued our original flights and we had to run to catch our original flights. They were not able to put us on different flights or make any changes to our flights schedule. During the waiting time we received no updates. The entire experience was infuriating and baffling because I still do not understand their objections to issuing our tickets. We made the connecting flight according to the original schedule."

Cons: "There was no way to select a seat and I was given a middle seat. This made for a very long flight since I usually prefer an aisle seat so I can get up and stretch my legs often. The person on the aisle was sleeping for most of the flight and I didn't want to disturb her so I could get out. I know the best seat assignments are probably given in order of check-in but I also wasn't allowed to check in online. Since my flight was delayed getting into LA, I was one of the last people checked in for the flight and that may be why I was given a middle seat. One other note about the flight... I was unable to hear the flight attendant making the announcements, so maybe something was said about needing to fill out an arrival card for the checkpoint. I assumed that since I was just connecting through and not actually staying in China, that I did not need this card. Needless to say, I didn't find out I needed this card until I waited in line and got to the checkpoint officer. It was not a huge problem for me since I had a lengthy layover in Shanghai, but if I had had a shorter layover, I could have missed my next flight because of this delay."

Cons: "the entire experience was spoiled partly by the fact that we were forced to wait over four and a half hours on the tarmac, and partly by the fact that the crew, in order to absolve themselves of responsibility, fed us blatant lies about air traffic control shutdown at HKG or about bad weather over Guangzhou. Both were easily disproved: a look out the window and at the internet showed (a) other flights taking off normally and on-time; (b) no bad weather in Guangzhou."

Cons: "Everybody was told that the flight was on time, so we were on board at 8:45pm from Shanghai to xiamen. After waiting in the plane for 1.5 hours, they informed us that the flight was cancelled. We had to check out our luggages. The airline arranged the hotel, and our flight was rescheduled to next day at 8 am. We were randomly pick to stay with another passenger in the hotel. 2 people a room. When we reached the hotel, it was 1 am, and we were told to check out at 5:20 am. We all did, and waited in airport till boarding time. The flight was delayed again. It was too much of on and off and tiring with all the travels. I wouldn't mind if the airline tell us ahead, and we could have time to make some plans...instead just wait in the airpots."

Cons: "Switched planes from boeing 777 to airbus. the business class configuration changed, it was uncomfortable. Also no self serve drinks or liquor in the kitchen area, not a lot of food options."
Cons: "There is lack of information of how to get to my second flight. The airlines didn't inform me that i need to go through the border custom, go inside China to get to my second flight. I was late a bit to my second flight because i had to go and ask a lot of people on how to get to the counter of China Southern Airlines. And the airlines told me that i was late, there was no other flight to Ho Chi Minh city so I had to wait till the next day."
