Scores according to KAYAK customer reviews
Cons: "Terrible service and all around outcome. Would not fly Air New Zealand again"
Pros: "Easy flight."
Pros: "All good"
Cons: "It was very cold so the cabin could have been warmer"
Pros: "Seat hard on older aircraft, needs new cushioning on seat"
Cons: "Had to pay for most movies. They need to bring around water more often and actually offer it to window seats rather than handing a glass to the aisle and walking off."
Cons: "Seats, food, entertainment"
Pros: "Checking in, bag drop, and boarding were all super fast and easy. Flight was on time."
Cons: "Superb airline"
Pros: "Comfortable seat."
Cons: "Ran out of meal options, flight was delayed so one option breakfast not appropriate at midday. The flight attendant blamed the person in front of me for taking the last other option. I had to clarify with her that meant there was only one option left. She seemed annoyed at me for asking."
Pros: "Very friendly and helpful staff"
Pros: "Fast transit connections in Auckland, Good times for departure/arrival"
Cons: "When I booked I chose seats, then the aircraft changed and I ended up with the family split. It would have been nice if they had at least sent an email giving me a chance to select new seats"
Pros: "The gate agents and the gate supervisors were rude and condescending My reservation was changed mid air and even though I made it to the gate 18 to Houston on time and boarding was still in progress I was not allowed to board. I was informed a plane was not a bus that I could hop on anytime I liked. When I protested that I had a confirmed reservation I was calmly told. “We canceled it because we didn’t expect you to make it.”"
Cons: "I missed my Thanksgiving Holiday because some powers that be decided I would not be able to make a connection So instead of waiting to we if I missed it and rebook then, like a normal airline, they preemptively cancelled and denied boarding."
Pros: "Very efficient trip."
Cons: "One flight attendant was subdued and not too bubbly."
Pros: "The entire experience is well thought out"
Pros: "We made it to Christchurch safely and on time."
Cons: "We were charged $120 per checked bag. We couldn’t check in online, so we couldn’t pre-pay at the lower rate. Felt a lot like fraud, honestly."
Cons: "Was not informed a return flight listing required Was not informed $260 baggage fees"
Pros: "A bit late leaving Auckland but we were kept well informed of the changes"
Cons: "Upon arrival we were informed that each checked bag was $60. This was news to us. The NZ flight employee informed us that Air NZ informed us quite well of this info, this the booking agent was at fault."
Pros: "Left on time and arrived on time"
Cons: "ATR seats uncomfortable No food"
Pros: "I got there on time"
Cons: "Staff not incredibly nice but OK. The thing that bothered me most is that if you book through KAYAK that sends you to Virgin Australia, you can’t book bag, nor buy a meal if you want. I didn’t want to meal but I did want a bag and it’s a big difference. If you do it online it’s 39 Australian dollars, but if you do it at the airport it’s AU$160. That’s just outrageous and the staff was not helpful at all"
Pros: "Good flight. Good crew. An overall good experience"
Pros: "Was a huge help when my connecting flights didn’t link up due to flight delay, I was so stressed but every single person with air nz helped to make it as easy as possible and were so friendly!"
Cons: "Nothing at all!"
Pros: "I liked that it got me from point a to point b. I had to pay extra to watch movies, no meal on an international flight (tbh I'm not sure what I ticketed and didn't tick while booking, but I mean it was nz to aus, come on)."
Cons: "Not getting my luggage across the ditch, paying for movies as an extra, no meal."
Pros: "Although I'd like to see the seats upgraded to ones adjustable to lie flat seats without getting up and several steps, the crew on the Air New Zealand flights make the difference. What a PLEASANT experience. Great passenger service boarding to landing."
Cons: "Once made, the lie flat seats are extremely comfortable. However, it's a bit of a hassle to get the bed made. Also the seats don't offer as much privacy as seats on other carriers (AA, UA, LH etc). If they changed the seats, the airline can compete with any other, as the crews are superb."
Pros: "Booked these flights though Kayak. Landing from LAX at 0730 at Auckland international terminal and then departing at 0900 from the domestic terminal. This is not enough time, doesn’t allow for customs and immigration. It was a really stressful experience running between terminals with my luggage, as there was less than a 1 hour window after getting through customs and immigration, so the bag drop at international wouldn’t accept them. Got to departure gate 12 minutes before plane departure. You need more time to have a good experience !"
Cons: "Not enough time booked by kayak between an international arrival and domestic departure"
Pros: "good entertainment"
Cons: "we purchased a sky couch for an extra $700 and was not put in a skycouch row. I have contacted Air New Zealand and have yet to hear back from them."
Pros: "Nothing really. Smooth boarding.on time departure"
Cons: "Passengers with more than one bag as hand luggage"
Pros: "Great customer service, from boarding to disembarking. Great care for comfort and needs."
Cons: "Selection of video options on the app entertainment systems."
Cons: "They charged $120 per checked bag- none are included in airfare. Also, no free food."
Pros: "The crew, food, entertainment made the flight comfortable"
Cons: "I felt I was gouged on my 2nd bag fee with an outrageous cost of $200.00 aud or $150.00US. It only weighed 20lbs. as well."
Pros: "My husbands booking was not processed correctly from the site we booked through, and we didn't notice the mistake until we were checking in. We were at the airport at least 2 1/2 hours before boarding time. The mistake could have been rectified, we were told it would need an email from Virgin to confirm and change the booking. We photographed and sent through passport details. We phoned the booing site, we phoned Virgin, we were put on hold for 25 mins while the booking site phoned Virgin - but Virgin refused to help us out! My husband was not able to board the flight - no refund, no help - and the sad part was, it wasn't for a holiday - it was to visit and help his 87yr old father-in-law who had fallen and cracked his spine. No sympathy from Virgin, VERY DISAPPOINTED!"
Cons: "I was not able to board flight because air new Zealand Staff would not assist."
Pros: "The boarding and on-board service were excellent. Enough free-of-charge entertainment to keep me occupied during the 3-hour flight between SYD and CHC. Plenty of room for carry-on luggage."
Cons: "Felt like I was flying a US carrier - very little room between the rows. I was surprised by this, as I thought that non-US carriers generally don’t pack their planes. I was surprised, but not inconvenienced by this, since it was a morning flight and only 3 hours gate-to-gate."
Pros: "The staff was nice."
Cons: "No room, It was painful for someone with nerve damage and severe arthritis to even get to a seat."
Pros: "Queenstown/Christchurch: quick and easy. Air New Zealand does a good job."
Cons: "All g."
Pros: "smooth flight, good treats, great legroom and fun crew!"
Pros: "Comfortable, easy flight."
Cons: "Ground crew not as friendly and helpful as is ANZ standard. Bag check-in is not more efficient. It's a pain for passengers."
Cons: "Couldn't check in online and book seats. That was a bummer."
Pros: "The inflight seatback entertainment."
Cons: "Tiny seats and no snacks or drinks in flight."
Pros: "Wonderful service from the ground crew. They went beyond the call of duty. Excellent experience. Thanks to everyone"
Pros: "No complaints at all"
Pros: "The plane was not full and luckily i was put into an Economy Couch row, so i got to lay down and get a great sleep. All the staff were friendly and helpful. The food was lovely."
Cons: "Nothing, as usual excellent service from Air New Zealand."
Pros: "Fantastic crew!"
Pros: "Cool dimmers for window shade; flight attendant notice we did not have headphones and gave us some first class looking ones that really cancels out the noise. Although we had it in the pocket we did not choose to use at that time but she took it upon herself. Staff always friendly."
Pros: "Clean. Enjoyed the entertainment."
Cons: "We took off at 7:30 and were given wsaer. Did not receive food for two hours which would have been fine if we could have had a coffee, tea, cocktail or a wine. We're not offered a drink until after food was served."
Cons: "Can't check in online with a VA per locator. You need an ANZ ONE. You have to call VA and forcefully ask for it. VA totally unhelpful. And when you get the ANZ number, they charge you to book a seat. Any seat."
Cons: "flight was seriously delayed, poor communication from staff & NZ Air app to travelers re reason for & how long delay would actually be. Shortly after we finally boarded I got a text saying our connecting flight from Christchurch to Dunedin was cancelled. So, we were flown to Christchurch & given hotel accommodations for the night, only to be flown BACK the next day to Wellington to catch a flight to Dunedin. All in all quite infuriating."
Pros: "Airport was easy to get to and the flight was very smooth and comfortable on a twin engine plane that is quite modern (noise level very minimal even though it is a propeller plane). Air New Zealand attendants were super friendly and helpful."
Cons: "Love that they fly an a380 into christchurch - a bit overkill but was told it is cheaper to overnight the plane in christchurch vs Sydney or Melbourne"
Pros: "A lot of food was served - much more than any flight in the USA"
Pros: "Free checked Bags"
Cons: "If we could have a free select seat after booking."
Pros: "Nice amenities, very efficient"
Pros: "Short flight, but they fed us great food, great service, even good wine."
Pros: "Super smooth flight, flight attendants were incredibly friendly and hospitable"
Pros: "The service and entertainment provided"

Pros: "The flight was on time, service with a smile. Staff great."
Pros: "good privacy"
Cons: "business class bathroom queue in the morning was troublesome"
Pros: "Crew very friendly and accommodating."
Cons: "No back-of-seat screen, overhead screens lacking enough contrast to see much. No matter, I looked out the window instead!"
Pros: "Almost everything."
Cons: "Flying on 8 Jan is a time when there a lot of holiday makers heading home or perhaps just going on holiday. Lots of young children and a baby crying right behind me wasn't the most relaxing but I realise that nothing can be done about that."
Pros: "Service fantastic"
Cons: "Food was a bit ordinary but on a short flight understandable"
Pros: "Quick boarding and deplaning on arrival"
Pros: "Crew was nice and ready to help"
Pros: "FLIGHT TIME"
Cons: "UNCOMFORTABLE SEATS , NO SEATS FOR FAMILIES TO SIT TOGETHER"
Pros: "Crew were really good. Had lactose allergy but no meals available for me onboard. Couldn't get to a resolution as we were unsure on ingredients but crew did everything they could. Were very friendly about whole thing"
Cons: "Delay but stuff happens eh."
Pros: "check in easy at Adelaide airport"
Cons: "The plane had small drop down screens every 4 or 5 rows which are totally inadequate for watching anything. gives no choice and poor sound quality (lag between vision and sound) Pork meal was some sort of tasteless slop in a cardboard box with rice and a green veg. It seem as if short flights are getting a raw deal with old planes and sub standard food, systems to save costs. If they cannot maintain a consistent level of standard across all their products let another provider in who can."
Pros: "Very smooth, made it alive."
Pros: "A380 fleet was the smoothest flight i've ever experienced of all airlines i've been to"
Cons: "one female crew does not smile, all grumpy"
Pros: "Everything about Qantas is good. No complaints at all. Staff fantastic - friendly and helpful."
Cons: "Nothing to state here."
Cons: "Little more leg room required"
Cons: "The flight being cancelled"
Pros: "Easy boarding"
Cons: "All ok really"
Pros: "Really appreciate the food and entertainment Qantas provides on these mid-haul flights"
Pros: "Got us safely to our destination"
Cons: "Seats were far less comfortable and smaller with less legroom than our Qantas qf8 flight"
Pros: "Boarding was smooth and easy. Food and service on board was excellent. No hassle with baggage or hand luggage. Comfortable and able to use my One World Status and earn miles."
Pros: "I didn't eat dinner as I was too tired, but the breakfast was good and dinner looked pretty good. For airline food, that is. The staff were very polite and friendly."
Cons: "I previously flew Tokyo to Sydney premium economy on Japan Air and that created expectations. This was significantly worse. The seats were not as comfortable or as spacious. On JL, you have a bit of a barrier between you and the person in the next seat. On Qantas, you very much do not. While this is probably more just bad luck than anything else, the boarding experience was nightmarish with swarms of people blocking every passage."
Pros: "It was a pleasant flight."
Cons: "I'm satisfied"
Cons: "Not enough legroom or seating area... Obviously you are downsizing, hoping that people will spend more to upgrade."
Pros: "Helpful service and comfortable seats"
Cons: "Don't choose seats 9 A/B/C as there is a bulkhead and not window in this aisle (Boeing 737-800)"
Pros: "Nothing. The very best parts were still mediocre"
Cons: "This flight was so uncomfortable. The seats were small, hard and crammed together. Qantas should be ashamed of making people deal with that on a 13+ hour flight. They kept waking us all up and in general staff could provide little"
Pros: "Service was good and having open seats next to us made it manageable."
Cons: "Kids meals lacked vegetarian options"
Cons: "I was not able to check-in on my mobile phone. I was not able to check-in at the Kiosk. I had to check my carry-on bag all the way through to Los Angeles."
Pros: "I had an exit row seat so being tall this was very much appreciated"
Cons: "no problems"
Pros: "food and service"
Cons: "I'm 6'4"... no legroom in economy"
Pros: "It's Australian."
Cons: "Typical overnight flight."
Cons: "Delayed Boarding and they didn't say anything."
Cons: "You charged me twice in my credit card the Ticket from Adelaide -Melbourne and Melbourne-Sydney"
Pros: "So easy to get from international to domestic. Which was such a releif when trying to get home to a family emergency"
Pros: "Nothing to be honest.."
Cons: "food was pathetic, served late, i have always found the Qantas crew to be rude. No change to that. Somethings dont change. this is one of them. I first flew w Qantas in 2005 in business class, and since then i have downgraded. But the attitude hasn't changed. It's as if we are doing service by choosing Qantas...."
Pros: "The staff showed they cared about you comfort and tried to make sure you were enjoying your flight"
Cons: "All was great"
Pros: "The seating, streaming movie choice and food exceeded my expectations."
Pros: "The crew were cheery, helpful and professional."
Cons: "In economy, space is an issue, still feels cramped"
