Cons: Tried to extend our stay and they wanted an exorbitant amount of money to do so, when we knew our room was empty. Not sure that is their fault, but we did love it so much that we really wanted to stay. Spa is expensive, but they do offer specials once you get there.

Pros: The food was unexpectedly good and I am very picky. The accommodations were very nice and the housekeeping was very attentive. Rooms were cleaned meticulously daily.
Cons: The room next door to us was being worked on and so we were repeatedly woken up in the mornings to drilling and hammering. The only other things I would complain about is that as far as wine goes, they only had one house selection, which was not great. Also the prices for the spa were ridiculously over priced.

Pros: The staff were incredible. Great, personalized service from all of the staff made this stay exceptional. The facilities were modern, clean and well kept. The activity equipment was available and in good condition and the beach/poolside areas were clean and comfortable. For the most part the food and drinks were excellent. The buffet food was typical of what you would expect of a resort/hotel buffet but the poolside restaurants and bars had excellent offerings. La Rotonda bar had great sushi and wonderful service. The Los Murales restaurant was phenomenal. The food was excellent and the staff was attentive and pleasant.
Cons: Had an issue with my original booking but the customer service department of the hotel was able to work it out after a few phone calls. The WiFi wasn't the best. The signal was strong around the resort but connectivity was often poor. When we were able to connect, speeds were acceptable for email and limited web browsing. The whirlpools are quite cool- barely warmer than the pool itself.

Pros: The staff were amazing. The grounds are incredibly manicured and maintained. The facilities sparkle. Dinner at Los Murales was remarkable. The breakfast options at La Palapa del Sol were really enjoyable and nightly specials kept it interesting. The rooms are beautifully decorated. Our entire family had a wonderful week there.
Cons: Like all resorts in Playa Del Carmen, they are struggling with the seaweed coming in on the beach. It's a never-ending battle. Given the value for what we paid, I don't have any suggestions.

Pros: The only thing that was lacking in quality were the bed sheets. For a 5 star resort the sheets were old and covered with pill balls. Also I don't like the fact that people get up and "save" chairs early in the morning without even sitting there during the day. The system should be when you leave the lounge chair you take your saving towel so someone can sit there and use the chair. Most of the time there were approximately 2/3 of the chairs empty just being "saved". This is not necessarily the fault of the resort but of people just being rude.

Pros: This was one of the best all inclusive properties I have been to. Room, staff, food, pools, bars and entertainment all were amazing. I loved the hydro therapy as well. Plus, as a bonus, the front door was right on 5th avenue, allowing us to shop, go to bars and grab off resort food. If you are looking for a chance to get both all inclusive and experience Playa Del Carmen, I highly recommend the Royal!

We also experienced unhappy staff at some of the outdoor bars and of all people the girl handing out the towels. If you don't get a dinner reservation which at times is difficult even though the restaurants are never full (funny because you try to book a reservation at a prime time, the staff says they are completely booked), you have to suffer through the awful dinner buffet. The entire management staff at this hotel should be fired or retrained on how to be helpful and polite.

Pros: The Iberostar Tucan / Quetzal is one of my favorite resorts in the Mexican Rivera Maya. The dining buffets are fine, and there's always some food offered that you've never tried. It's fun to experiment with new tastes. This was my fourth visit. The staff are very courteous and speak several languages. The fun begins with the jungle in the center of the resort. A large canopy of trees with well lit winding paths takes you from your room to the waterfront pools. New additions this year included a balcony overlooking the flamingo pond, a boardwalk in the center of the jungle, and a new waterfall with Mayan statues hidden in the rocks. The wild animals living in the jungle run free and appear tame, but you are warned not to feed them. Peacocks are everywhere, and you can get some great photos of the males spreading out their huge feathers. If you stay near buildings 14 and 13 expect to have howler monkeys swinging through the treetops to get to their feeding areas. They wake up at dawn with ferocious howls that remind you that, yes, you are far from home and now in a tropical paradise.
Cons: A surprise this time was the renovation of one of the buffet restaurants, what was once an intimate rustic buffet is now a separated modern glass and steel food service area with a longer walk to your table. I preferred the rustic design but was told Iberostar plan to remodel the other buffet restaurants with the same bright white modern sterile design.

Pros: The beach and pool are amazing and HUGE! The food in the restaurants was excellent. The food at the buffet was good. They did a great job of trying to include foods at the buffet that would appeal to guests from all countries, and it gave us a chance to try different foods that we would never typically order in a restaurant. There were always snacks and ice cream available by the pool, which was great. The entertainment staff, Star Friends, was amazing! They work around the clock to entertain the guests and always seem to have activities, games, or shows going on that are actually entertaining, whether you're participating or just watching. The nightly shows were a bit hit or miss, but they get an A+ for effort and enthusiasm. For some of the shows, they brought in professional dancers or entertainers and those were excellent. Our room was spacious and comfortable. The refrigerator was restocked daily with water, soda, and beer. The drinks were weak, but we liked that since we could drink all day at the beach and all night at the bars without being too affected by the alcohol! The disco was a great place to listen to music and relax at night after the shows. It wasn't very busy when we were there, but the bartenders were amazing and so friendly! We never felt pressured to tip anyone, and they almost seemed surprised when we did tip them. Overall, our trip was amazing!
Cons: This did not bother me, but it is not a fancy "luxury" resort, so people with extremely high standards or expensive taste might want to stay elsewhere.

Pros: The accommodations were wonderful; rooms were beautiful. The evening restaurants were good. The grounds are beautifully kept. We enjoyed the evening showing and the pool/beach activities. Easy 10 minute walk to PlayaCar for souvenirs.
Cons: The buffet for breakfast and lunch was only so so. There is no hair conditioner in the bathrooms. Our room had mosquitos but once reported they fumigated and then no other bug issues inside.

Cons: I didn't like the whole reservation process for the themed restaurants, they would be full per the concierge and when you would show up the retaurants would be 1/2 empty. They required pants for guys for every themed restaurant which is a pain when it's 90 degrees at night. Everything is an upgrade and you even have to pay for internet. The whole resort is way too big and there limited elevators which is a real pain when you have small children with strollers

The wait staff was always rushing us thru dinner... Which by the way had HORRIBLE FOOD! The buffet was ok ... Just ok. The bar always had a huge line yet only ONE bartender. All of the specialty restaurants were completely booked the day we got there and u can't reserve before u check in so we only had 9pm as a dinner option. Pros: My first time in Mexico and at an all inclusive. I really enjoyed the area and the feel of the resort. The separate restaurants had nice dinners and the buffet breakfast lunch and dinner was pretty good. The beach and the pool were very nice and the resort was located close enough to the downtown area that you could walk or take a cab for next to nothing. I would come back and would recommend this place to others.
Cons: Our check in had some confusion based in the american websites that we had read and what actually was the case regarding her son and kid staying free. However they were pretty sympathetic and work out a very reasonable deal with her. They have some guys not he beach that r selling excursions and asking for money to hold your place that don't work for the resort and if you didn't know better then you think it's ok. They are a scam and they will take your money and refund you if you decide not to go. Beware or them!!

Cons: The beach is always dirty with sea weeds, the food is horrible the staff are not attentive not greetifull. Bartenders are horrible and drinks suck! If you want to go and have diarrhea and vomiting for two days with you and your children all together go to this place! We were 9 In our party and 8 of us got sick!! And I heard from other quests that people in There party got sick also!! The restaurant is outdoor it's hot and humid and food is not kept at a good temperature so any dairy product or meat will be prone to bacteria very quickly. They do not have enough ice and do not keep food fresh! If they use beans tonight for dinner the left over is served for breakfast! It's so disgusting!! Would never stay at the reef playacar again! So many Mosquitos!!! Be prepared to get bitten and get food poising beach is terrible!!

Pros: Beach is impeccable - best beach in playa. Pool area was beautiful. Got a great deal via kayak $125 incl tax per night all inclusive for two. Alcoholic beverages included and paddleboard free for 30 min. Located in gated community so beach was a bit exclusive - no one hassling you/ begging for money.

Hotel would not allow me (parents staying at hotel) to access property without a playacar membership card (hotel is located on golf course/ in gated community) had the card thanks to my Airbnb host but was not allowed after 6pm to watch sunset with parents to celebrate their anniversary.

Cons: Cheap 2 star food service. If you don't ask for it you won't get it. This was my fifth visit to the Reef. Every year the overall food service has gotten progressively worse especially in the Italian Restaurant. Four years ago that restaurant had an excellent antipasto salad bar now it has the same salad bar as the main restaurant. The entrees youst to be very good to excellent and the house wine and champagne were surprisingly good, no more. We never went back to that restaurant after the first try, nothing special. The hamburgers at the snack bar are mixed with a filler that does not taste good. I couldn't eat it. The food in the main restaurant varies little from day to day. They use the cheapest meat available but prepare them well and in a tasty manner. Beef is rare but if you ask for it they will get you a steak. Years ago the Italian restaurant was NYC quality, the main restaurant had fresh squeezed orange juice for breakfast, champagne flowed all day, now you have to pay for it after 11 AM and the overall food service was much better. I have to admit I found something I like to eat at every meal and they served steaks after I asked for them. Our bathtub needed replacement, it was cracked on the bottom. Our TV was broken as well.

The we get to the room that smelled HORRIBLE the lights did not work and latch was missing, The Beds where so hard, I think the floor was Better all the servers where so rude. NO ACTIVITY at the pool area the pools where so small plus if you needed to pay extra if you wanted a different beer and then to get a coffee at the lobby was 3 bucks really what part of all inclusive was I missing. I hated this Hotel it was the WORST EVER NEVER AGAIN. We also got food poison, and other people staying here at the REEF also got food poison. The food is not kept at the right temperatures and the service was HORRIBLE you would ask for your Drinks they either took forever or they would not come at all. At the food stations the cooks where always in a BAD MOOD. There beach was super dirty this was the only hotel that did not clean the sea weed. JUST THE WORST HOTEL EVER

Pros: Nothing - The place was completely mediocre. The only good thing is that it is a beachfront hotel.
Cons: The check in procedure was a nightmare. I flew in from spain and had done the reservation the night before. Upon arrival, they tell me that the reservation is not in the system because the person who takes care of reservations is on a holiday until tuesday! The man tells me that he'll put me in a provisional room. We walk there ( mind you Im carrying my whole kitesurfing equipment with me ) and as the bellman opens the door, we notice the room is occupied. So then we had to go back and I was put in another room for the night and then had to transfer the following day. My check out date was on Friday and I needed an extension until Sunday - I contact the lobby and they tell me they have no availability. While I was booking my room elsewhere I decided to look at their webpage and they did in fact have rooms available. Completely unprofessional people. Yes this is an all inclusive too, but the food is terrible. Breakfast and dinner tastes exactly the same.

The location & setting is great. The staff we're great (tip the bartenders and cleaning staff for even better service ! ) Our shower was always hot (would have liked a colder water option actually). The food selection was great as well. Beach side waiter service would be an improvement for sure.

Pros: Everything (except the timeshare!)!! The staff was amazing, the adult only exclusive area was exactly what we were looking for. It was a nice walk (about 5 minutes) from our area down to the beach and if we didn't want to walk there were shuttles available. The beach was gorgeous and the pool so much fun! We loved that we did not have to reserve for the a la carte restaurants! Our favourites were Asiana and Mexican! The Premium Bar was also a nice feature of the room (gold wristband) that we reserved through kayak. The Jr Suite we stayed in was less expensive on Kayak than the standard room and when I emailed the resort to confirm this they responded immediately to assure us this was correct! We would go back in a heartbeat and highly recommend it!

We sat with Enrique, received the information and did not accept the request for further information. We were contacted three more times about our "welcome package" even after explaining that we had received the information.

Pros: The staff were great. The beach was fantastic. Drinks were in full size cups and there was some premium liquor.
Cons: THE WALK. They gave us a"free upgrade" but put us over a mile from the beach. The said they have golf carts but there are 400 rooms back there and 3 carts that hold 6 people each. At one point we had to wait an hour for a ride. All activities are near the beach so we didn't end up doing very much. The first day of our vacation we walked 16,000 steps, this is not what we wanted our beach trip to be.

Pros: This is definitely a place families can go with their kids. There are lots of animals and outdoor activities. I would recommend bringing your own shampoo and conditioner. the beds were okay, could have been better, but outside of those things the resort offered great food, lots to do, and gorgeous scenery. The beach, unfortunately, is way too rocky to swim in, but you can still get in. Temperature was perfect!
Cons: This only thing I didn't like about the resort is that the room smelled of mold the entire time and the shampoo (no conditioner) was not good for us at all. The beach, unfortunately, is way too rocky.

Pros: Jorge Sanders Concierge gets a 5 star triple diamond rating. He made our entire trip. It was amazing because of Jorge Sanders concierge helped us so much and we wish we could repay him for everything he did for us.
Cons: Well we got 100 dollars stolen from us. It didnt come up in the investigation and they tried to make it up to us by giving us a spa credit. Which would have been amazing and totally rectified the situation. However the concierge manager was hard to get in touch with. And bu the time they offered us the spa credit we had 1 hour until we left back to the airport. So we were a little sad about how the situation was handled.
