Cons: Unfortunately we booked an evening boat trip. It was getting dark and raining. The tour guide adopted a very strange verbal resume of York. Quite a dreadful voice , poor delivery. Good job we had two more days in which to experience very professional tour guides in the Minster and the York Walk.

Cons: Breakfast was expensive but we paid for convenience. Would have been good to know in advance that we were in the newest section of the hotel. I had stayed before and loved the older rooms. However the new section rooms were of a very high spec.

Cons: Parking is extremely limited and far from ideal location in a dark area tucked behind the hotel and needing to walk down an alley way. If I were female this doesn't seem safe and couldn't see any CCTV. I do object to be charge £12 for the privilege. Had there not been a space I was informed that I would need to park in an 'overflow' area somewhere else but based on parking restrictions in the area I cannot speak for where this might have been

Room was clean and even though our room faced a club there was no noise at all. Bed was super comfortable. Breakfast had a great selection both hot and cold. Location was good, just a short walk into the town centre and less than 10 minutes from the train station. Checkout at 12pm. All great, will definitely stay there again

Cons: Had a slight mishap with the shower it was a disabled one and neither of us had used one before. It was a little tricky trying to get in. Flooded the bathroom in the course of negotiations. Did report this and the floor was all mopped and cleaned on our return. The extractor did not work. (We forgot to tell reception this) when we checked out. Think the casing around the shower could do with an update.

Cons: We arrived a little early. 2:00 p.m. When someone finally answered the door, we were not invited in but told that it was ten minutes to town and to come back after 4:00. We didn't expect to check in early but did expect to be treated a little better. We could have been asked if anyone wanted to use a restroom, or we could have been given a map and some directions, but no. Not a problem really, and we would stay here again, but a rude welcome.

The bathroom was quite modern and mostly quite nice. However, the shower door installed over the bathtub leaked and we had to adjust things so as not to get the floor wet. We were close to the "action" on Saturday night, but our room fan was perfect and we slept very well on the comfortable bed. We hadn't been told upon check-in that breakfast was included with the room and we made do with the room coffee and tea (I did find that this info was included in our paperwork, but the room had been booked months ago so we forgot). That said, we enjoyed having breakfast the next two days.

Pros: (Had to include this because they would not let me right everything in the what didn't you like) My mother and I booked this as a weekend trip, we picked one of the Annex room - to me this means a room with a sloped ceiling. When I arrived at the hotel, turns out the Annexed means in a completely different building, this was a huge let down as the reason we had picked the hotel was because of the beautiful building. To get to this building we had to go underground and pass all the staff kitchens, there was an odd smell down there and it made us feel like we were 'hidden', I though it was a bit deceiving. The room was facing the rail station, meaning that whenever a train passed by the room would shake a bit. The room though was more spacious, but our spirits were low as we felt like we were staying at a holiday in rather than a fancy hotel. We came back to the room after exploring, there was a smell of sewage in the room, we could barely open the window. Then we had to get staff to come and help us turn on the heating. The next morning when we were ready to shower, the water pressure was absolutely dismal. When we tried to call there was no answer, no answer the 5 times we tried to call, I shudder to think what would've happened if we were in a state of emergency. I went down and decided to speak with the duty manager, I explained to Sarah the situation. I did not feel heard at all, she kept on making excuses and justifying, there was not one 'I apologize' or 'I'm sorry for your discomfort' etc. Just excused.

Cons: A four star price for a two star room... Not worth it. We were sold on the look of the lobby, shared spaces and strong overall rating. This was the only thing that did not dissapoint. After that it all went downhill however. We got a room at the end of the building without wifi. The walk towards it was through a dark corridor (there is hardly daylight) with dirty and stained carpets. The room was very damp and small (12m2) and was just 30mtr from the train tracks. The diesel locs made sure you couldnt really get a good night sleep. We wanted to order roomservice, but reception was not answering the phone and when they finally did - after three unsuccesful attempts- our call had to be forwarded. Overal sense tgat I got was that they really dont care about you unless you have one of the more expensive rooms.

The room was facing the rail station, meaning that whenever a train passed by the room would shake a bit. The room though was more spacious, but our spirits were low as we felt like we were staying at a holiday in rather than a fancy hotel. We came back to the room after exploring, there was a smell of sewage in the room, we could barely open the window. Then we had to get staff to come and help us turn on the heating. The next morning when we were ready to shower, the water pressure was absolutely dismal. When we tried to call there was no answer, no answer the 5 times we tried to call, I shudder to think what would've happened if we were in a state of emergency. I went down and decided to speak with the duty manager, I explained to Sarah the situation. I did not feel heard at all, she kept on making excuses and justifying, there was not one 'I apologize' or 'I'm sorry for your discomfort' etc. Just excused.
Cons: She offered for us to shower in a different room - this was perplexing, as if we were going to take our suitcases all over the hotel to a room that we weren't even staying in. I then asked if we could move rooms (what should've been offered initially) she reluctantly agreed and showed me a room with two twin bed in the 'main house' and told me that we would've had to pay more for these rooms, it felt like a joke, the room was minuscule, I reluctantly agreed to this room. I then asked her to include complementary breakfast as a gesture of good will, she then responded 'you can either have the room or breakfast, not both'. When I returned to the original room frustrated, I called back the duty manager and told her that we are going to leave the hotel as we had lost faith and wanted our money back. She agreed to reimburse use for the first night stay, provide us with a room change, and with breakfast. We were happy with the result but honestly I felt emotionally drained from the whole experience. We were only staying at the hotel two nights and then were faced with a rude duty manager who felt like she was doing us a favour. When you book these kind of hotels you expect a certain level of service and though the staff was nice and polite I found the manager to be hostile and filled with excuses, not a good standard for such a hotel. The rest of our stay was fine but I definitely wont be returning to this place, which is a shame because the hotel is extremely beautiful and well situated.

Cons: The bathroom was in need of renovation. Black mould around the tiles and ceiling, cracked mirror frame, no extractor fan all contributed to making the bathroom look grubby and damp. Also, the water was turned off during the middle of the day on one of the days for repairs or maintenance. There was no warning of this.

Cons: We went for our wedding anniversary and ask if would be quiet and assured it would be. When we arrived there was a wedding with live music, it was so loud we couldn’t hear each other speak. I was assured on the menu there would be gluten free options but for our evening meal the staff told me i could get a salad or a steak nothing else so I had to go to the local Tesco for a gf sandwich! Totally ruined our night away and wasted money.

Cons: We requested a disabled access room close to reception but were put in a Grandstand room because it has a walk-in shower. It was a nice room but had I been properly advised of this I would have brought my portable/detachable shower handle. We managed OK but it would have been very difficult without my partner to help. When it comes to adequate disbled access small, specific details really matter. I like this hotel but the ridiculous walking distance to the disabled access rooms makes me want to give the architect a slap.Getting onto the Free wifi was much more of a palaver than the last time we stayed which was a shame.

Cons: It doesn't have a kitchen. Recycling is not practiced by costumers, which speaks bad about them, not the hostel, but the hostel could also try more effective ways to implent it (different colour bins, more persuasive messages ;) )

Cons: The room next to us had a group of young men who came in at 3am in drunken stupidity and woke us all up. Not the fault of the hostel, but very disruptive. Perhaps staff could have reminded them of the hour when they came stumbling in? I had to go to the front desk in my pajamas to ask them to speak to the group :(

Cons: I was surprised that there was no wardrobe or drawers but as I only stayed one night it didn't really matter. My biggest problem was stumbling every time I left the bathroom as the floorboards peaked in a V shape and I kept forgetting to do a sidestep!

Pros: location was great, with bus service to all attractions outside the hotel grounds. breakfast area was well stocked with great variety of food and the time allocated for guests to sit and have a relaxed breakfast was appreciated.

Regulary topped up..the hotel was clean tidy.and the staff couldnt do enough for us.. We had forgotten tea bags and shower jell..we asked for extra tea bags was given plenty and the samd again nxt day..shower jell was topped up in our room and the bed was made and clean towels..uve stayed in many hotels for more than 1 night and unless u ask they dont do this..so im overly impresed..a little expensive but what do u expect its york.

Cons: We were allocated a disabled room for some reason ?! The toilet had a very, very loud flush,. Water draining for all drains ie shower and bathroom sink made a vacuum noise. No hot water for evening shower.

Cons: There wasn’t any toiletries,like advertised, had to ask for some shower gel. The consumables wasn’t stocked up the next day so again had to ask for tea and coffee and went and bought our own milk. And one of the mugs had a horrible crack and chip so had to ask for a replacement

Pros: Clearly the recent restoration has been a great success, retaining the looks and feel of a substantial "gentleman's residence" whilst remaining eminently accessible - this largely due to the well trained, highly professional and unquestionably guest focussed front of house staff. My evening meal was fish and chips, not an easy dish to get absolutely right, but the chef clearly knew his/her business and produced a dish whose only equal, in my experience, was a Doyle's Fish Restraunt in Sydney. Unfortunately I take a light breakfast so was unable to sample most of the tempting options on offer. Your Hotel sets a standard that others should aspire to, many congratulations.

Cons: I arrived at 6pm on a Sunday evening and got the last possible parking space within sight of the hotel by dint of having a very short car. Had it been raining it would have been tedious to have had to walk any distance with my luggage. That said I have no useful suggestions to offer. I was accommodated in the Lodge and an external light over the front door would be a great help when its dark.
