If you’re going to be spending a lot of time in central York, it's a good idea to hire a car that’s light on petrol and easily manoeuvrable in traffic, like a compact model or an economy car. If you prefer, you can hire a sedan, which will give more interior room. An MPV or SUV will also do you well, as long as it’s not too big. However, if you’re not intending to spend much time in the city itself, then you’re free to choose other models, like a larger 4x4, a luxury vehicle or even a convertible in summer when the weather is mild.
Speed limits in York are consistent with those in most parts of the UK, with a 30mph speed limit in the built-up areas, but keep an eye out for specific sections where it is lowered to 20mph, such as near schools. The speed limit increases as you move further from the city centre. On single carriageways you can drive at 60mph, and once you’re on the dual carriageways or motorways, the limit is raised to 70mph.
Parking in the centre of York is free, as long as you use one of the Park & Ride services, but given that you can’t drive into those parts of town, it’s the logical choice. There are over 15 other privately run public car parks that cost anywhere from £4 per day to just under £2 per half-hour.

Pros:We picked up the car in York, England and drove to Edinburgh, Scotland followed by a tour of western Scotland on the way to Inverness. We drove the next day to my great grandmother's home town, Aberlour. We decided to drive to Wales instead of taking the train. Now we are in Wales and will leave tomorrow for SW England. We have grown attached to our little car and wish we could adopt it.
