The location is inside the city walls, two minutes from York Minster, shops and local restaurants. The approach is a narrow and quiet lane with lovely old properties all around you. The property itself is particularly stunning. It's a very old historical building with amazing period features. There is a 'bar' which in fact is a beautful long gallery room with wood panelling and comfortable seating. Also there's a library room with real books (!) that you can borrow. Our room was a good size and very comfortable with a well fitted bathroom, including large shower, roll top bath and twin basins. The 'blind' tasting meal was fantastic - great food and great service. My daytime picture is of the hotel from the city walls, you can see the walled garden with steps leading down from the gallery bar and the curved windows on the first floor (second floor if you're in the USA!) to the right of the steps is the restaurant. Don't forget the city walls. A very short walk to a staircase leading up to them and you get a great view around you. Looks like in the Summer you can access the walls directly from the hotel's garden.
The wardrobe was tiny. Not a problem for the two nights we were there, but would have been difficult if we were staying longer. There isn't really any choice of food other than the fixed price menu. But a tapas bar recommended by the hotel just two minutes away was extremely good. And there's stacks of choice for places to eat within 10 minutes' walk.
It is the amazing hotel near the heart of the city literally in 1 minute walk from the cathedral. The building is the ancient one and interiors perfectly fit the building though everything is clean and all facilities are new. The library, the restaurant and the area near the reception are all exceptionally cozy and are worth spending time in there. The staff was extraordinary friendly and welcoming. Rooms are different and every one is unique; our was great and equipped with everything you need. The bed was really comfortable and the sleep was good. The breakfast is the ritual that takes near an hour, so be ready for this )). There is a green backyard and dogs lining in the hotel. We wish we could spend more days there. Highly recommended and worth every penny spent.
It is a bit pricey however as was said it is worth it.
Three course breakfast was amazing. The room was lovely, great bed, the building, decor and gardens are stunning and so close to the minster. Also a quiet location but right in the thick of the city. Team were very professional and pleasant throughout.
No WiFi details or information on the hotel and times etc. in the room, no bath even though we booked a deluxe room so would expect a bath.
Rooms were spotlessly clean Location was fantastic Staff were excellent Fantastic breakfast
Having to pay extra for parking
Everything at this hotel was wonderful - the location, atmosphere and food but what made it for us were the staff. They were so friendly and informative - they were so proud to be working at the hotel - and quite rightly so. Highly recommended!
