Driving in Umbria is generally fine to do. Of course, you must drive on the right-hand side of the road, and you will need to practise parking and turning on the other sides of the road, but in the countryside of Italy, people tend to drive calmer than they would typically do in the bigger cities. There are fewer traffic lights and complicated junctions, making your journey easier. Beeping and overtaking is common in Italy, so don’t be surprised if the locals do this, but we recommend that you just follow any street signs that you see, and stick to the laws, even if the locals don’t.
In order to drive a car in Italy, you will need to be 18 years old, but many companies require the named drive of the hire vehicle to be at least 21 years old. Some of these companies will place a surcharge on the hire price if the driver is younger than 25. There is a 0.5 g/l alcohol limit for drinking and driving in Italy, but this is actually set at 0.00 for drivers who have held their licence for less than 3 years. Drivers that are not from the EU or EEA are required to show an International Driver’s Permit to be able to legally drive in Italy.
