KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Napier

  • Napier is a seaport city on Hawke’s Bay with a sister city, Hastings, that sits around 18 km to the south. You have a lot of ground to cover to truly appreciate the Hawke’s Bay area, making car hire in Napier an excellent way to ensure you make the most of your time in the region. Indeed, the whole North Island is a road-tripper’s paradise, with coastal towns like New Plymouth and Gisborne, the lake-side Rotorua and so much more to explore.
  • Hawke’s Bay Airport (NPE) is a single-terminal airport servicing the Hawke’s Bay region. You will find a range of companies offering car hire in Napier within the airport precinct, with most staffing kiosks in the arrivals hall of the terminal building. If you know what type of vehicle you want, it’s worth pre-booking through KAYAK, as this gives you a better chance of getting the car you’re after. You’ll usually get a better deal and save yourself a bit of time in the process.
  • The town of Napier was levelled by an earthquake in 1931. Since it had to be completely rebuilt, the whole town was designed in the Art Deco style that was popular at the time. This makes every building in Napier an attraction, so when driving in the CBD, you should expect to encounter a lot of pedestrians taking in the architecture. You may also find vintage cars moving at a slow speed around town. For this reason, it’s important to be extra vigilant and make sure you always give way to pedestrians.
  • New Zealand is known for having a lot of one-way bridges, particularly out in the countryside. When you encounter one, it’s important to slow down and look for a sign indicating which direction of traffic needs to give way first. If you need to give way, there should be a stopping zone where you can wait until any oncoming traffic clears. Once all the traffic has cleared from the bridge and you can see no oncoming vehicles approaching, you’re safe to cross.
  • The legal blood alcohol limit for driving in Napier is 50 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood (0.05%). If you are caught driving with a blood alcohol level over this limit, you could face a fine, loss of licence or even imprisonment. It's important to note that drinking and driving is a serious offence in New Zealand, and is not tolerated. Instead, it is recommended to designate a sober driver or use alternative transportation.
  • In Napier, the child car seat safety rules are consistent with the rest of New Zealand. Children under the age of seven are legally required to be secured in an approved child restraint appropriate for their age and size. Children aged four to seven years must be secured in an approved child restraint, such as a booster seat, unless they are taller than 148 cm. Infants must be in a rear-facing child restraint until they are at least six months old or until they exceed the weight limit of the rear-facing restraint. Children aged between six months and four years must be in a child restraint that meets New Zealand standards. If you're aiming for cheap car hire in Napier, consider booking any required seats in advance.
  • For Napier car hire, you must be over the age of 21 and have a valid driver's licence. If you are under 25, some car hire companies may charge a young driver fee. You will also need to provide a valid credit or debit card in your name for the hire deposit, which will be refunded upon the return of the vehicle in good condition. It is recommended to have car hire insurance in case of any accidents or damages to the vehicle, but you can arrange this with the hire company as well. You should also make sure to read and understand the hire agreement before signing it, including any additional fees or restrictions on the hire, such as mileage limits or restrictions on driving in certain areas.
  • 25% of our users found rental cars in Napier for $71 or less
  • Small rental cars in Napier are around 63% cheaper than other car types, on average

FAQs about renting a car in Napier

  • What type of car is recommended for driving in Napier?

If you’re looking for cheap car hire in Napier, you’re in luck, because an economical compact car is all you need to see the local sights and enjoy short road trips to close by towns, like Gisborne (approximately 214 km away), or longer trips, like the winding Pacific Highway route to Auckland (approximately 695 km away). If you’re travelling in a large group, bringing a lot of gear with you or simply enjoy having a lot of space, an SUV or minivan will provide the extra legroom and storage space you’re looking for.

Hertz was good, but when I booked my car through Kayak, the vehicle that was booked didn't get relayed to Hertz. This is two reservations in a row where I booked a Compact SUV and the Hertz dealer received a request for a compact car.

Hertz was good, but the car I reserved on Kayak was not the car that Kayak Booked with Hertz. Thankfully the Hertz representative fixed it.

The windscreen was unclean and therefore became very murky when It was raining or drizzling and cool as it was. That meant that I was having great difficulty reading road signs at endless roundabouts in the Havelock North/ Hastings/ Napier area. Even directing heat at the windscreen didn't work because it had this grubby film. The region was new to me so I didn't know well where I was going. Perhaps I should have had my GPS system operating but haven't had to do that before in the countryside. 2. I knew that I should fill the petrol tank prior to the dropoff but haven't yet seen a service station en route from Napier to the Airport. I'm sure that others have the same problem. 3. Signage at the Dropoff area is woefully inadequate. The whole area is really oneway driving so if one passes the entry then it's difficult to return. The signage needs to be repositioned overhead directly in front; not a small sign at the side. Remember that there are several rental companies. I'm sorry but I have to say that it's the worst rental experience I've ever had. I'll be quite pissed off if I find that the additional $200 plus charged on my Credit card unexpectedly at the Airport on pickup has been docked for the cost of an attendant having to top up the petrol tank. The attendant at the kiosk should advise customers as to the availability of service stations nearby.
