Insights shared by verified travellers who hired a car in Calgary
Verified travelerSept 2026
Car type as per picture described ,make sure the type of car you want.
Verified travelerJul 2026
I would suggest renting VW or compatible/higher cars , for more noise insulation , power and sturdy and comfortable drive ,while on road especially highways. If you're planning to visit places like banff, it's always best to leave early morning to find parking spaces easily, otherwise it's gonna be a musical chair in the parking lot 😀. Calgary is beautiful in summer.
Verified travelerJun 2026
Book an SUV if you are doing a lot of mountain driving
Verified travelerJun 2026
Rent from the airport. Very convenient.
Verified travelerJun 2026
I would prefer a smaller car that has AWD in case of bad weather yet one that can fit into busy parking lots in the National Parks with ease. I wish I had known that gas is sold in liters and that most stations want you to prepay for exact amount of gas prior to pumping. Be prepared to do some quick converting if from another country.
Verified travelerAug 2026
It should be all wheel drive as drive towards banff /Jasper is mountainous one thing to note drive from Ken loop to Whistler having lots of steep mountains so be prepared for it, good car really matter on these roads.
MaryamJun 2026
It is good to have a four wheel drive. The weather is very unpredictable and even in June, it can be at freezing temperatures.
aby1983Jun 2026
SUVs (Large!). DO NOT hire an “Intermediate” SUV if you have a large family and luggage. They won’t give you a RAV4, you will always get a Kia Seltos or Nissan Kicks.
Verified travelerAug 2026
Pay through third party, they will charge you triple on the counter.
Verified travelerJan 2026
Rent only at the airport, not a different location. Look for a different company, may be Enterprise
R. CraigDec 2025
Insistbon snow tires at a minimum and hopefully four wheel drive.
Verified travelerOct 2025
Plan on a wait. Location is very close to the airport. Best rates I’ve seen
AshSept 2025
There are surcharges if you pick up at the terminal. Expect to pay 20% additional.
Verified travelerSept 2025
Book at one of the main rentals in the airport
Verified travelerJul 2025
Just follow the signs inside the airport to the hire counter and follow the road signs coming into the airport precinct to guide you to the returns area.
Verified travelerJul 2025
Have a sturdy car like suv. Also ensure you have enough gas while driving. Gas stations are far in between.
AnastasiaMar 2025
If you’ll be travelling on Highway one towards Banff, Lake Louise and Golden, I highly recommend you have a vehicle with snow, tires and four-wheel-drive.
Verified travelerMar 2025
Check with your own insurance provider and bring proof of insurance
Verified travelerMay 2025
Please be aware if you are a lady dropping your rental off at night, there is strange and suspicious activities from harmful people around the area.
MichaelFeb 2025
Book early. Direct with company
Verified travelerJan 2025
Be careful when rental car agent gives you information and promise discounts. Ask them to provide it in writing as I noticed there is a trend to mislead customers.
Verified travelerSept 2024
If you plan on doing a lot of hiking outside of Calgary namely, in Banff and Jasper NP's, be sure and book an AWD vehicle. Glad we were upgraded from a sedan!
Verified travelerOct 2024
Ask for the winter tires if you planned on going in the Rockies in October and later.
SheilaSept 2024
Over communicate, get confirmation of everything, take pictures, document everything!
Verified travelerNov 2024
Very easy access but dress warm in the winter
Verified travelerNov 2024
cheaper downtown than at the airport
Verified travelerAug 2024
QEEQ is a good booking agent. If driving across provinces and dropping off in a difference province check the fuel prices at destination before picking up vehicle and deciding to pre-pay fuel. When booking, check whether the car has in car navigation activated and if CarPlay is enabled
Verified travelerJul 2024
Recommend a truck or jeep if you’re heading into the mountains.
Verified travelerJun 2024
Make sure the vehicle is full of gas upon pick up. The gas tank indicator on the instrument panels on many vehicles are not very accurate, and can be off by a considerable amount of litres of gas. Also give yourself enough time for the return of the vehicle, especially if you have to catch a flight. This rental agency is very busy.
FaithJun 2024
Alberta does not use sand in the winter but stones mixed with sand...you get a stone chip and you are on the hook. Be safe and buy the window insurance.
Verified travelerAug 2024
Purchased the add on insurance. No questions asked at drop off about scratches
Verified travelerJun 2024
Use a rental company that is on the airport .
DavidAug 2024
Vehicles are expensive to rent in Calgary, book early!
Verified travelerJul 2024
Get in early before the rush.
TerriMay 2024
Be careful of upgrades- they offered me one and it wasn’t until I inquired further that I was told there would be a few associated.
Verified travelerApr 2024
Be sure to always take videos and photos of the vehicle prior to leaving the rental lot.
DarrellMay 2024
Check your documents and make sure their fuel level matches what the document indicates.
Verified travelerApr 2024
If you are travelling off-peak hours, it’s apparently YOUR responsibility to research whether the pickup counter will be open or not. Selecting a ‘pickup time’ on the app is definitely not a guarantee.
Verified travelerJan 2024
Rent at Enterprice. Fair deals and good customer service. Never go to Budget. We learned it the hard way. Next year we will be renting at Enterprice again!
NikhilDec 2023
Easy to get around. Did not take winter tire package and was still fine on city roads.
MoniqueSept 2023
We were in Canmore. The drive to Canmore was easy and the road great. The nearest gas station we found to fill the car before returning it was at 430 Country Hills blvd NE, T3K 5A5. It is at 8 minutes from Budget.
RussellSept 2023
The roads are excellent and traffic is busy but nothing like LA. Parking downtown can be a little expensive, but it is nice to see such nice accommodations for walking paths, bike paths, parks and scooter rentals if you are not driving around.
Verified travelerOct 2023
A fantastic idea, glad I decided to rent be shuttle. Driving in Calgary is super easy and the highways to Banff are wide and not congested. Was a very pleasant drive getting around!!
Verified travelerSept 2023
Calgary is very car-focused so driving is pretty easy. The place is very sprawled out, and though their transit system (especially light rail) are great, driving makes life a bit easier.
Verified travelerSept 2023
Do not use Thrifty. Use Enterprise - they were excellent and found a car for me at short notice
YokoSept 2023
It is easier to rent a car at airport
Hsu-ChuanSept 2023
City is beautiful, very close Banff and Kananaskis!
Verified travelerOct 2023
Leave some distance with trucks on highway. They can spray your windsheald with snow, and you wont see anything infront of you for a few seconds.
MichelleSept 2023
Calgary driving is easy… be sure to refill gas tank even tho stations are not easy to find
Verified travelerSept 2023
No yielding to right but yielding in arrival + right on red. Not really obvious for Europeans!
RochelleOct 2023

Verified travelerSept 2023
Watch your speed, photo radar everywhere!! Lesson learned unfortunately.
ThomasAug 2023
We scheduled an Uber driver to pick us up when we dropped off the car and put the key in the night box and everything went perfect . They are only open week days from 9 to 5. If you can make that work , they are great. It worked perfect for us.
Verified travelerAug 2023
We paid a small additional fee to return our car to the airport instead of back to where we got it from which would’ve been out of the way and a hassle.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Layout of Calgary is very simple. Several major roadways (“trails”) get you to the area of your destination. Smaller streets and avenues branch off from there.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Calgary is a large spread out city. We would have been lost without Maps on our cell. We got around Calgary very easy with it.
FelixAug 2023
Driving in Calgary is enjoyable, advise to book online before driving to scenic national park if necessary
Verified travelerJun 2023
Book in advance to get a car from the Enterprise location at the airport.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Driving is definitely enjoyable. Respect walkers, hikers, and cyclists along with wildlife
Verified travelerAug 2023
Driving in Calgary is quite easy. Used google maps with no problems.
RustyJun 2023
We only drove to Banff and it was very easy driving.
priscilaJul 2023
Do it as early as you can and use thrifty
Verified travelerJul 2023
Don’t use third party bookings - use hertz directly
Verified travelerAug 2023
The Calgary's agent was really respectful and kind.
Verified travelerJun 2023
Customer service at Alamo was great!
CraigJun 2023
Study the main thoroughfares on the map to understand the general flow of traffic in and out of the core areas and expect construction all the time - it’s a growing city that never stops expanding.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Find out if a shuttle to car rental part. Ask for a clean car. Watch all the upselling attempts. Gas goes far in Calgary.
Verified travelerJun 2023
Driving in calgary is nice but the different style of intersections compared to ontario made it a little bit confusing
Verified travelerAug 2023
Trust google, drive carefully, watch out for speeders (lots of them) and tail haters (lots of them), know your directions.
Verified travelerAug 2023
Roads are horrible but make sure to follow the speed limits as there are plenty of speed cameras
UdayJul 2023
The airport signs for rental car return are obvious only when you get very close to the terminal.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Rent early and ensure you take in drop off location and time
CourtneyAug 2023
Locals view speed limits as suggestions. Be careful on the busier roads.
BrianJun 2023
Allow yourself a lot of time to get the car.
Verified travelerAug 2023
Park your vehicle in an underground parking to avoid vandalism.
Verified travelerAug 2023
Traffic can be heavy. Roads are good.
Verified travelerJun 2023
Had a problem with Banff city parking over a weekend. Parked the vehicle and while purchasing parking pass, some one kept a ticket for parking violation. Need to send all the snips showing the time to waive it off. So be careful on parking in banff city. Purchase the parking token soon and keep record of the same.
Verified travelerMay 2023
Book early. It’s difficult to find rental during peak times.
S YukonMay 2023
When you are on the busy roads traffic is crazy. I tried to use more side roads to get to my destinations.
Verified travelerMay 2023
Figure out parking options and their prices ahead of the travel. Part of the stay not the rental car price though.
Verified travelerMay 2023
Driving in Calgary is fine. Busy but traffic moves and signage is good.

KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Calgary

  • Calgary is a paradise for lovers of the great outdoors. Situated at the junction of the Bow and Elbow Rivers and with the Canadian Rockies on your doorstep, exploring the surroundings of Calgary is a dream with a hire car. The world famous Banff National Park is only a little over an hour’s drive west and will leave you awestruck with the picturesque turquoise glacial lakes, untouched wilderness, and natural hot springs. Canada’s third largest city by population is located nearly 3,500 feet above sea level and has something to offer for every willing traveler.
  • Once you land at Calgary International Airport and collect your baggage, follow the signage to the Car Rental Center elevator. On the second level you will find the counters of multiple major car hire companies including Hertz, Avis, Budget, and Thrifty. The drive from the airport to downtown is seamless along the AB-2 S Highway and will only take approximately 25 minutes. If you are heading to Banff National Park you can either take the Highway 1, which will allow you to pass through Calgary on the way, or the Stoney Trail (201) Highway, which is a more direct route.
  • Canada, and specifically the mountain range, is blessed with wildlife that sometimes feels an explorative urge and wanders onto the roads. Be mindful when driving and keep an attentive eye out for animals. If you do approach any hazardous animals, remember to drive carefully and reduce speed.
  • Thanks to its higher altitude, Calgary can experience significant snowfall in the winter months, causing difficult driving conditions. The roads are designed to best deal with this snowfall; however it is important that you follow some simple tips to increase your safety. Scrape any accumulated snow off your car before driving, paying extra attention to the windows and headlights. Listen to weather reports and adhere to any warnings; the city has a Traffic Advisory station which you can tune in to at 106.5 FM. Be mindful to reduce your speed when driving in poor conditions and be extra cautious around pedestrians.
  • 25% of our users found rental cars in Calgary for $73 or less
  • Medium rental cars in Calgary are around 58% cheaper than other car types, on average

I got there and found out about a policy change that they had NOT made clear anywhere. Specifically, you’re no longer allowed to rent using your debit card. I had paid a $70 deposit beforehand which I was told was nonrefundable. So I wasted $70 and an entire day for absolutely nothing!

Enterprise called the morning of the rental and told me they didn't have any cars. They told me that I could call all of the other Enterprises in the area for availability but they would not do it. They also told me I could talk with Expedia about the booking. Talked with Expedia who told me to talk to Enterprise. Then redirected to Enterprise who continued to tell me it was my responsibility to call all the other Enterprises in the area for availability - none of which had anything. No apology. No voucher. No effort to make it right. Never again.

I rented the car through priceline. The total cost given to me through priceline was significantly less than when I picked up the car at the Calgary location. They had every excuse they could think of to justify the price but fact is, it was quite a bit more. The calgary pickup location is unorganized. There drop off in red deer was great. Overall, $224 to use a car for 150kms and less than 24hours was excessive.

Booked a car to be picked upnin Calgary and returned in Vancouver. What wasnt clear (maybe with very small letters?) was that the drop fee for returning in a different lovation wasnt included in Kayak’s rental price. Drop fee was ~40% of rental fee!! I would probably have booked anyway but not nice to be tricked. Car and waitingntime etc was fine but hard to be happy when cheated this way

Quite bad. I have a family of 5 and booked an Intermediate SUV which had a picture of RAV4/Toyota 4Runner in the advertisement. I was given a Kia Seltos instead. I had 4 big suitcases and 4 small carry on bags + an infant seat. To get everything to fit, I had to get the back seats to lean forward so I could get the trunk to close with all the suitcases in it. Imagine what my kids went through in the back seat for a 1.5 hour drive from Banff to Calgary! Very disappointed!! Either be honest and advertise a Kia Seltos for an intermediate SUV or accomodate your customers needs!

The car itself was clean, comfortable, and ready to go by the time I picked it up. However, I had some issues with the payment process. They required a physical credit card, which I understand, but I only had my credit card digitally available. Unfortunately, they did not offer another option, such as paying online at the counter, so I was almost left without a car. If you’re travelling, make sure you bring a physical credit card or pay in advance through the website to avoid being stuck without a rental. As for the protection plan, it was significantly cheaper through a third-party booking site. Avis charged around $48 per day when purchasing the protection at the counter, whereas through the third-party website, it was only $44 for the entire rental and was added to the total upfront rather than charged per day. Overall, the car and pickup were good, but I would strongly recommend reviewing the payment requirements and protection options carefully before arriving at the counter.

Pickup was very poor. The staff at the front desk were very nice and professional. The problems began when selecting and picking up the car. We were asked to check the condition of a black car in an closed garage with poor lighting. Next to impossible. Then you have to show the problems to an agent who has some sort of screen to look further. About a dozen people were all leaving at once and so it took the better part of an hour from being shown the car to actually leaving the airport. Once we got it out into the light it was obvious we had missed a scratch. Upon dropping off, the process was very fast. However I wasn't given a receipt, and the one promised to my email never came. So now I have to chase it down. The car itself was otherwise fine, and was problem free.

Really bad experience. It was truly a horrible experience. I rented a car online, selecting the model with the features and price I wanted, but when I arrived at the agency, they gave me a smaller, cheaper car with different features. In addition, I had to wait around 40 minutes due to a mistake they made with a customer who arrived just before me. She was also unhappy because we paid for one car and they gave us a different one. It was a total fiasco. I asked for a refund or the difference, since the car they gave me was smaller. The response was dismissive and rude: no refunds, no more cars. It was very cold and I was with my daughter, so I had to take it. But the experience was terrible. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

They did not have the Rent-A-Car. I reserved when I arrived to pick it up. I was told there were no cars available whatsoever. That left me completely stranded at the airport. I was then offered a vehicle that was an upgrade for an additional $50 a day, but they would not approve my secondary driver because it was an upgraded vehicle. My entire trip was based on renting a vehicle with two drivers. I was going to stay and the secondary driver was going to return the vehicle back to the Calgary airport. Because the car was not available for us. I had to drive eight hours to return the car. I will never rent from dollar/thrifty/Hertz again.

Pick up from and to airport was good. Everything was satisfactory. My only initial disappointment was I signed up for managers choice SUV and got a Nissan Kicks which is not an SUV albeit AWD. Was brand new though and fun to drive so I was ok with it. Also I’m not sure there was any info prior to stating that prices were low because some personal insurance may or may not cover you. I was glad ICBC did cover me, so that was a relief. I forgot to fill up before return as I was tight on time to catch flight. Only used maybe a quarter tank over the rental time so it appears that my balance showing zero owing was received. That I did appreciate and may consider Routes again.

First, I needed justify my request to have a snow brush, before I received one. Then I needed to clean the inside of the windshield, because sticky debris on it impacted my vision. (Both issues are recurring with this company) When I returned the car, a filled up gas tank suddenly showed it was only 90% full. I drove around in a unfamiliar area trying to top up the tank, only to find out the tank was full, but the gas gage did not reflect this. I went through this twice until I realized it wasn't user error, but something wrong with the fuel gage. This also put me over the 200 km daily limit. I explained all this and showed them my gas receipts. I was told not to worry, and encouraged to write a positive review on Google, which I did. Once I was at home, I received a bill for extra km and service fees! Dealing with this company is aggravating and really only worth during times of significant discounts.

The car was front wheel drive and didn’t have snow tires. Christmas in Calgary without snow tires is dangerous. The car was not properly equipped. They wouldn’t do anything about it as it’s a small facility and they had limited cars. Won’t be renting from them again.

STAY AWAY!!! The car was advertised with unlimited miles when booking. At the rental station they said that they have their own policy and only allow 200km/day. Even after opening a claim that was not changed. Additionally, very slow pickup process and every person that was with me at the rental station in Calgary had either issues with the KM, out of province policy or insurance policy. TOTAL RIP OFF

They called me when I was on my way and had no cars. The address featured on the site was also incorrect. This was extremely frustrating and ruined my trip, Driving Force should not be on Kayak because all the information is wrong and they blamed me for it instead of taking accountability for their online information being wrong. They were kind on the phone but still, this is unacceptable

I had a job interview in Edmonton and when I picked up the car I was told I only have limited km when I booked the reservation it was unlimited km. So I borrowed a friend’s car instead. Waste of my money as it sat for the day. Will not be recommending this service.

The drop off/pick up is outside of the airport. If you need to drop off the car early and they are closed you have to drop off the car and take an Uber or taxi to the airport at your own cost. Just a heads up when booking.
