Old cobblestone roads, numerous hills, and mountain driving make renting a Jeep or SUV while in San Juan a good idea. More importantly, make sure the car has a very good air conditioning system, as it can get quite hot and humid in Puerto Rico.
Speed limits on the island go from 20 to 45 mph in residential areas. Around Old San Juan, the speed limit is 25 mph and, when close to schools, note that the speed limit drops to 15 mph. When on the freeway, you can go up to a maximum speed of 70 mph.
Petrol costs about $0.81 per liter or $3.08 per gallon. If you are in the metro area, expect to pay a few cents more at the pump and little bit less on the outskirts of town. The cost of petrol in San Juan and all of Puerto Rico is slightly more than other states within the mainland United States.
Old San Juan offers so much in terms of historical and cultural sights. Nonetheless, trying to find parking in this area can be a challenge. There is some “free” street parking as well as metered parking, but you’ll have to get to it early in the day. If you aren’t fortunate enough to get a street spot, don’t fret -- there are plenty of parking garages and lots to choose from. Some options include Old San Juan Cruise Pier Parking and Parking Lot Old San Juan on Calle Marina.
