Top tips for hiring a car at Salt Lake City Airport

  • When visiting the area, a car rental at Salt Lake City Airport is a great way to explore and head to all the attractions on your to-do list. As the city is not known for being particularly walkable and does not have its own extensive public transportation system, driving is one of the best ways to move between neighborhoods and visit nearby towns, such as Ogden. Having your own Salt Lake City Airport car rental also makes it easy to transport any sports equipment or luggage.
  • Depending on your specific preferences and needs, there are quite a few models for you to choose from for your car rental at Salt Lake City Airport. If you will be doing quite a bit of driving or traveling with several other passengers, you may want to choose a spacious SUV. Those that primarily plan on staying in downtown Salt Lake can always opt for an economy or compact model instead, as these are a bit smaller and generally are easier to park and move through narrow roads.
  • Once you are ready to return your car rental at Salt Lake City Airport, you can do so by bringing it back to the exact area where you initially picked it up. All rental companies that have branches at Salt Lake City Airport keep their fleets on-site at airport property, so make sure to remember where you initially picked your vehicle up from, as this is where you will be dropping it off. Some companies at the airport may allow you to return your vehicle after hours, but this will depend on their individual policy.
  • Salt Lake City is a large city that is a major business hub, so the streets often have traffic. If you want to avoid getting caught in congestion, try to pick up and drop off your vehicle around rush hour, which is normally between the times of 7 and 9 am and 4.30 and 6.30 pm. You will find that there are a few roads that tend to be busier than others, and these include Interstates 15, 154, and 215.
  • Book your car hire at Salt Lake City Airport at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price

FAQs about renting a car at Salt Lake City Airport

  • What documents does a customer need to have to rent a car from Salt Lake City Airport?

If you would like to have a rental from Salt Lake City Airport, you are required to have several documents before leaving with your vehicle. One of these documents is a valid driver’s license that was issued by the government, and which does not have an expiration date that falls during the time you will be renting your vehicle. International travelers can also still rent a car, but they must provide either a foreign driver’s license or an international driver’s license. Make sure to check with your specific company to see which documents are accepted.

  • Are there any amenities available for customers at Salt Lake City Airport?

The car rental center at Salt Lake City Airport has basic amenities for customers, including sitting areas where you can relax while waiting for all your paperwork to be processed. The building also has public restrooms, doors that are wheelchair accessible, and outlets for charging electronic devices. Your rental company may offer you a free bottle of water.

  • How do I go to the rental car center at the airport?

You will find the rental car center located in the Gateway Center, which is just near the main parking garage and can be accessed directly from the baggage claim area. In this center, there are desks for more than five different major rental car companies. After you finish your paperwork, an employee will give you your car key and lead you to your vehicle.

  • Which car rental companies will pick you up at Salt Lake City Airport?

Car rental companies that offer shuttle or pick-up services from Salt Lake City Airport to off-airport locations include Ace, Advantage, Affordable, Airport Van, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, and Europcar.

They oversold their vehicles as left me without a car, had to stay in the city for another day, come back to the airport the next day and rent a car from National, also had to get another hotel room by the rental location at Salt Lake City airport due to not being able to drive to the city my hotel was in. Total experience was horrible.

Terrible. Had to wait in a huge line for over 1 hour after a long flight. Only two clerks were available, and at one point there was only one clerk. Everyone in the block long line was angry, stressed and complaining. The other car companies next to us were well staffed and had no lines. Then when I finally got my car it was low on gas. I'll never use Avis again!

The front desk clerk made it seem like it was required for me to carry their insurance. Her question was, "Do you want just the basic insurance, or do you want the premium insurance." At first I told her just the Basic, but then as I was filling out the initials on the sheet I asked her, "But insurance isn't required if I have my own, right?" She said, "As long as your insurance covers it, no, it isn't required." I told her, "Okay, so my insurance will cover it, so I don't want the insurance coverage." She snatched the sheet off of the counter and said, "No worries.. that will just be refunded with your deposit." Instead, she turned in the sheet. I inquired with the manager when I got back and she was going to look into it and give me a call back, which has never happened. The front desk rep was there at the time I was talking with the Manager and we brought her over to get her memory of the situation. The rep said, "Yeah, that conversation is vaguely familiar. I do recall something like that happening", but that was it. The manager said she'd talk with her General Manager and return my call, which has never happened. The shuttle ride was fine, but the driver didn't get up and offer help for us to get onto or off of the shuttle. Throughout the experience, I felt like a Dollar Sign and not a human. As long as I'm out of their site, and they got their money, apparently they're good.

They gave me a bad car to begin with. The car already had an Oil change required warning sign. The car had an empty red bull can. When I complained the same to the Hertz customer operations manager at Salt Lake City, he was least interested in listening to what I was saying and was very adamant in accepting the fault. When I said the vipers were making a screeching sound and the viper auto mode was not working and I had to manually move it up and down, he said that Hertz does not guarantee the working of auto vipers and some cars don't even have that feature. I am renting cars since ages and never felt experienced such a terrible customer service. Never choosing Hertz again in my life.

NU Car Rentals – Salt Lake City Airport | Formal Complaint & Demand for Refund Reservation: 6750285640NU | Agreement: SLC01-52068 Dates: September 26–27, 2026 | Paid: $136.93 Reserved: Compact SUV (Nissan Kicks class) Received: 2024 BMW 228i AWD sedan I am demanding a FULL REFUND of $136.93 for what I believe was a potentially deceptive bait-and-switch sales practice involving misrepresentation of vehicle availability, coercive upselling, and threatened cancellation of my prepaid reservation. I reserved and prepaid for a SUV because I am 6’8” and require an SUV to accommodate my height. Instead, I received a sedan after declining a paid upgrade. WHAT HAPPENED While waiting in line, I watched the female counter employee tell three customers ahead of me that their reserved SUVs were ready and available. Each was immediately offered a larger SUV for an additional fee. All three accepted and paid for the upgrades. When it was my turn, the employee told me my SUV was ready and offered the same upgrade. I declined and said I would keep the SUV I had already reserved and paid for. She walked to the back, as she had with each customer before me, returned, and suddenly announced that my SUV was unavailable. She offered me a sedan instead. I explained that I am 6’8” tall and would not fit in the sedan. She responded that this was precisely why I “have to” pay for the larger SUV upgrade. I told her I did not have to pay more. I had reserved and paid for an SUV and would gladly accept ANY SUV (compact or other) available. I was not asking for a particular make or model, only the vehicle category (SUV) to be honored which I had purchased. I pointed out that she had just told three customers their original SUVs were available, that all three had accepted paid upgrades, and that numerous SUVs were in the lot being offered as upgrades. She said the company was a small, family-owned operation and that I would take what they gave me or they had the right to refuse service and cancel my reservation. I warned the customers behind me in line that they might be given sedans if they declined the upgrade. The employee then threatened to cancel my reservation and told me to take a shuttle back to the airport and rent elsewhere. After I requested a manager, Shane intervened and allowed the rental to proceed. I ultimately received a sedan instead of the SUV I had reserved. WHY THIS IS SERIOUS The sequence raises legitimate concerns about potential bait-and-switch conduct: customers were told their original SUVs were available, offered paid upgrades, and I was told mine was unavailable only after I declined. Providing a sedan instead of the reserved SUV category, insisting I pay more to obtain an SUV, and threatening cancellation raises concerns about potentially deceptive or unfair trade practices. A disclaimer that makes and models are not guaranteed does not, by itself, resolve whether the reserved vehicle CATEGORY was fulfilled. I am requesting an investigation into whether this is an isolated incident or a broader practice across your locations, including whether employees are instructed or incentivized to withhold reserved vehicle categories to induce paid upgrades. FORMAL DEMANDS 1. Full refund of $136.93 to the original payment method. 2. Written confirmation that the $300 authorization hold has been released and no further charges will be assessed. 3. A written explanation of why my SUV was initially represented as available, why it became unavailable after I declined the upgrade, and why no other SUV was offered. 4. A formal review of the female employee’s conduct, the cancellation threat, and manager Shane’s handling of the substitution, including appropriate corrective action and employee coaching for the female employee. 5. Preservation of relevant reservation, inventory, vehicle assignment, upgrade transaction, incentive, internal communication, and available surveillance records from September 26, 2026. NOTICE OF ESCALATION If this matter is not resolved satisfactorily, I am prepared to file complaints with the Federal Trade Commission, Utah Division of Consumer Protection, and Better Business Bureau, and to seek legal advice regarding potential claims under applicable consumer protection laws. I reserve all rights and remedies available to me. Please provide a substantive written response within 10 business days, addressing each demand and explaining the basis for any refusal to issue a full refund. I am sharing this experience so other travelers can make an informed decision before booking with NU Car Rentals. I expect NU Car Rentals to take responsibility, issue the full refund, and provide a meaningful written explanation.

KAYAK
My experience was awful. My flight was delayed, so I arrived about 5-6 hours after my scheduled pickup. Apparently, after 2 hours they put the car I reserved "back out for rent." I had paid for a luxury suv, but they only gave me a standard SUV. They did not refund me for the upgrade I had already paid for. And they had the luxury SUV available, because they offered it to me as long as I paid another upcharge. All I got from the customer service person was "I don't make the rules." Also, their lot is not actually at SLC airport. It's a short uber drive or about a 2 1/2 mile walk from the terminals. They do have a shuttle, but it does not start running until 6a.m., so if you have a 7a.m. or earlier flight like I did, you'll have to drop off before they open and get an Uber to the terminal......or walk 2 1/2 miles. Fortunately, I was warned about this. As my Uber was pulling away, we were flagged down by two people (who look like they got the luxury suv I paid for) who asked if there was a shuttle. They had apparently not been told about the 6a.m. start time (it was around 5:30a.m at this point). Had I listened to the person behind the counter who told me to just get there at 6 and take the shuttle, I would have definitely missed my flight, because getting through baggage check and security took almost an hour. I believe the shuttle ends at 6p.m. as well, so make sure to check on that before your trip if you have a late arriving/departing flight. You might have to Uber to the rental then as well. Despite all that, the shuttle to the rental place (I at least got to take the shuttle on the day I arrived in SLC)was nice and clean and the driver was friendly and helpful. The car was decent, and seemed new, but my wife said it smelled like jagermeister to her. If you're going up in the mountains, I'd highly suggest something with a stronger engine than the Chevy Trailblazer. It struggled getting up. Also, the change engine oil light came on as soon as we got in the car, which left me wondering how well they keep up the maintenance. They were the cheapest option, so you get what you pay for. I will not choose NU the next time I'm in SLC.

I loved the experience. However the intake took an hour in line. One very friendly experience girl behind the counter and a line out the door. She looked exhausted but as friendly and had excellent customer service skills. There needs to be at lease another clerk helping the customers

NU Car really stepped in for me because I had to rent a car last minute because my previous company dropped the ball and didn’t have inventory. The rep was really kind and worked with me to find a great car for my trip that best fit my needs. She asked about the number of people, where I was going, etc. so she knew what to offer. It ended up being more expensive that I planned but for being a day of rental and for the higher tier we ended up going with, it was a good deal. Also for off airport rental companies, the NU Car shuttle runs really often. Twice as often as another one I tried. I would rent again

My experience was unacceptable. I arrived from my flight and the counter was closed. Even though my rental was booked for 8pm, they apparently aren’t open at that hour. I called customer service and they had no resolutions except coming back to the airport the following day, so I ended up having to pay twice the price at another company last minute so I could get to my child’s sports tournament. I will never use them again.

When we got to Salt Lake City to pick up the rental car that we had reserved, they did not have a vehicle to accommodate the amount of passengers as the rental car that we reserved. When we asked if they could accommodate us with two cards instead of one, the woman said no and walked away.

On the flight Dollar emailed "Slelect your car now" and go straight to your car. The SLC pickup island was vacant. Walked all the way back to the rental counter and found a line of 25-30 people waiting and one associate. We just left. We won't be back.

Although I confirmed ahead of my reservation time, and attempted to use the online checkin and pickup, I arrived to find a long line, one employee at the desk, and learned there was no inventory at the airport location. I’m just grateful that Dollar and Expedia gave me no problems in canceling my reservation.

Arrived 10 pm. Reservation was made in March. Three preregister e mails were sent. When I went to get the car I was told we have no cars. I said I have a reservation and was told we have no cars. I asked when they would have a car - 1 hour, 2 hours, the next morning. I was told they have no cars and that the employee did not work tomorrow. We had to try the other rental counters until one was able to rent us a car for 2 weeks. Another customer had the same experience at Budget. I will never rent from Budget again. They did not care about my reservation or problems at all.

I booked the rental for 8:30 pm. I called for the shuttle to take me from the airport to the rental office from the airport. It never came. By then, it was 9 pm and the rental desk was closed for the night. I was stuck at the airport with my children, suitcases and no rental. I had to do a last minute rental at another company for much more money. I’m never renting through a third party vendor, like kayak or Expedia ever again.

Car wasn’t ready even though we arrived 1.5 hours after our established pick up time. Kept saying it would be only 5-10 minutes longer, due to the car being dirtier than they thought. Confusion between check in agent & the rep that hands customer the keys over; needing additional signatures and logging the VIN & plates after we left the lot. Apparently they require you to take a video of the car before leaving, which we were not told. Confrontational drop off/check in rep because we didn’t have video. Felt very unprofessional & shady, won’t use again.

1. The website said they were located IN the SLC airport. They weren’t. 2. Went to the pick up point and had to wait 45 for their shuttle. Repeatedly tried to call and no answer. 3. Go there, hours are 8am-6pm. My departure flight left at 6am. I asked how am I supposed to get to the airport. They said get an Uber. At 4am?? 4. When the lady in front of me came back in and said the car they just gave her had a cracked windshield and the check engine light was on, i decided to forgo renting from them and called a friend for a ride. I went without a rental the entire visit because I was worried about my safety in a sketchy car they may give me and trying to find a safe Uber at 4am in the city. The location was a good 5+miles from the airport, so not even close.

Sixt ar SLC has been great. The pickup and drop off are quick, easy, and friendly. I have both times received an upgrade on the vehicle. The shuttle has always been right there for me both directions. The one downside the first time I rented from SIXT was that there's no signage to tell me where to find the shuttle. I had to ask lots of questions to find it. And it's a bit of a walk away, past all the rental cars and out to the curb, in case that makes a difference to someone.

Great customer service. I had to change my car for a 4WD, contacted Sixt via email, got an answer immediately. When I arrived to the airport took the shuttle, arrived in no time, the driver was very helpful and nice, at the office Antonio assisted us, very professional gave us all the options. I returned the car a different city, same excellent service, they took us to our hotel at the airport. Will definitely book my next rental with Sixt. Simply excellent!

The in airport pickup was great. The agent was great. The car worked great for me. The only reason why it didn’t get the top-top rating was because the poor desk agent had to switch between programs for 3rd party purchases (like kayak) and that took quite a while. For their sake I’d like to point out that’s inconvenient and not the way that most rental companies work. But it was a minor thing and overall I was very happy

I have rented dozens of cars over the past few years and have never ever had an experience this bad. Terrible. Do not book a car here especially if you're a local. I went to pick up the car I reserved and pre-paid, I had a valid driver's license and my credit card with me but they wouldn't give me the car. They said they required a secondary proof of address ONLY FOR LOCALS, but wouldn't take my bank statements or my car insurance bill or my renter's insurance bill. They said it had to be a utility bill. I didn't have any, my utilities are included in rent so obviously I don't have utility bills. They didn't listen to anything I said and were extremely rude and inflexible. The manager was so rude I couldn't believe it. Had to take another Uber back to my office and now I'm fighting for a refund.
