Rate quoted online is not correct!Pros:The car we got was exactly as described online and worked great for our needs. The people we met at the Alamo location in Libera for pick up and in San Jose for drop off were very helpful and extremely accommodating with providing maps and recommendations.Cons:The rate we were quoted online was vastly different from the end price we paid. When we made our reservation online the price was around $150 for our full reservation and once we arrived at the airport in Liberia to pick up the car we were quoted 3 price options that we could choose from ranging from $450 - $660 depending on the insurance coverage we wanted. If we went with the $450 option the car rental location would put a $1,000 hold on our card that would not be lifted for at least 7 business days after we returned the car (and left the country!). We did not feel in any way comfortable with this option and the only way to not have the hold placed on our card was to go with the $660 option, so we did. At the time of pick up we were told these were required insurances/fees put in place by the country of Costa Rica that we had to pay in order to rent the car. At this point, had just traveled 10+ hours, were in a foreign country and had no other means of transportation for the duration of our vacation so had to accept the fees. In my opinion, it was still not an unreasonable total fee for the time we had the car; however, it was extremely misleading to be quoted one price online for our confirmed reservation and then required to pay another upon arrival. I suggest that if possible, this should be rectified so travelers aren't caught off guard in the future.Reviewed 27 Jul 2017

Falsely advertised prices. Very disappointing expePros:The car itself was fine.Cons:Originally booked the car for $116 USD for a week (I also paid for separate damage insurance online and expected to have to pay third party liability insurance separately as the online booking never offered it for purchase.) When we went to pick up the car, the mandatory third party insurance cost extra $230 USD. The insurance was double the price of the rental cost itself. We were shocked and no one seemed to know why this was never mentioned anywhere. We built our whole trip around this car, not to mention the car park location is remote and had no other option but to suck it up and pay. We could hear other customers around us having the same issues. I have never been more disappointed in a rental company, as well as the booking site itself for failing to mention such a significant cost. It was false advertisement and I do not recommend Alamo. After all the issues, the associate had the audacity to constantly try to upsell us with bigger cars and extras. They clearly had no shame nor compassion.Reviewed 18 Dec 2016

Checkout was stressful and return was goodPros:Return was quick and drop off to airport was quickCons:I was charged for full tank of gas for a price of $60 without asking me. I did not want that. Also the company tried to sell me all kinds of insurance trying to scare me and not telling me easily the minimum needs. That was the worst part of the experience. I was told that a deposit of 2500 dollars would be kept for declining comprehensive insurance. When I asked for the navigation I was told it Would cost 15 dollars a day and when I said it was asking for 10 a day on website he gave me for that price. So I felt they were trying to extract as much out of the rental by unfair meansReviewed 29 Dec 2016

Pros:The car was sturdy and clean and got us where we needed to go.Cons:We opted for a GPS system (at $10/day), and when we received it the stand did not work. When we returned the car, we were informed that the stand had been given to us functional, and we would be charged $30 for the breakage. The posted price on Kayak was also significantly lower than what we were ultimately charged.Reviewed 10 Jul 2016

Don't buy insurance from Kayak!Pros:Alamo has a desk in the airport and a quick shuttle that takes you to the offsite location where the cars are. It's about a 5 min drive in the shuttle. Quick drop off when you're leaving and quick shuttle back to the airport.Cons:The required insurance. I bought insurance from Kayak assuming this was in conjunction with Alamo. It was not. I was required by Alamo to either put a $2500 deposit on my credit card or pay $500 for insurance for the week. I was not allowed to cancel my insurance through Kayak either.Reviewed 11 May 2017

Deceptive/ Dishonest PracticesPros:When I checked out they said that their printer was not working so I could not get a receipt and they would email it to me. I still have not received it. I see on my charge card an additional charge for $292.00 and another one for $2600.00, both are pending. I will need to dispute those charges. When I picked up the car I was told the insurance that I prepurchased was no good because I made the reservation through Price Line and they tried to sell me insurance in excess of $100.00/ day.Reviewed 3 Jan 2017

Pros:Simple straightforward car, friendly staff.Cons:Insurance 3 times as expensive as car rental, without any prior warning during online booking. Classic rip-off. Clutch of the manual transmission almost worn out. Wheels need balancing badly and start humming above 50 km/h.Reviewed 8 Jan 2017

Beware high insurance charagesPros:Very speedy pick-up from baggage claim and transfer to the off-site lot.Cons:Just so you know -- Alamo Liberia advertises very low rates, then charges thru the nose for insurance. Our $110 weekly rate quickly became a $450 rental after "mandatory" insurance, GPS (recommended) and pre-paid gas (also recommended).Reviewed 19 Dec 2016

Cons:The agent insisted we did not have appropriate insurance despite the fact that we provided all the required documentation. No other are were available and we were charged 400 dollars unnecessarily. Will never use Alamo again.Reviewed 7 Jan 2017
