Payless has great customer service for the situation we were out in. The insurance prices are crazy but at the end of the day it wasn’t Payless fault. This is a country requirement that we did understand prior to booking. The pick up was easy and Luis was great!! Drop off was simple as well and super friendly. Car was cleaned when we picked up and that was appreciated.

No problem being picked up from Liberia Airport to off-site pickup location . . . It was either a pay an extra $419 for " a 'mandatory' 3rd person collision insurance" or no rental!!!! This was $419 payment for a $147 7-day rental!! The personnel at Payless were were helpful to secure a taxi to Playa del Coco for $60.

It took them 45-60 minutes to check out each guest, were understaffed, and were not communicative about the situation. They were oversold and did not have the car we reserved. After waiting in line for 2 hours we left, went to another agency and had a better car, at the same price, in no more than 15 minutes. Zero stars avoid this place

near airport; fast shuttle; air conditioned office while checking in; insurance requirements are expensive but worth it for the peace of mind; return was super easy; shuttle back to the airport was quick with only a few minutes wait time. overall great experience -- especially since the car I got was basically brand-new, used diesel and therefore cost almost nothing, and supported Android Auto for access to my music and maps.

Borderline scam, and I place about 60% blame on Expedia/carrentals.com/kayak. When I came to pick up the car, the price suddenly doubled due to the “mandatory” liability insurance that was not at all disclosed in any of the previous communications from CarRentals.com or Avis. Moreover, I had to reach out to the (superb) Amex support team to get a letter of coverage (at night in a foreign country) to avoid having to buy optional CDW insurance from Avis as well. Again, this was in no way disclosed at any time between the booking and the pickup. A terrible way to start a great vacation! I recommend looking up an independent car rental company and skipping both Avis and these middlemen.

Used a credit card that has full coverage insurance for 30 days. However once we arrived the agent wanted a letter with our name and card number stating the coverage. Credit card company could not provide the letter in a day therefore we were charged an extra $40 per day for Avis insurance coverage. We witnessed serval people with same problem. We did not have the same problem last year when we booked with another car rental company.

Hertz price does not reflect true price. Upon arrival they state Costa Rica law you must get insurance from them only. So if one pays from the site they have to pay again. Should be told before booking if that’s the law. And reflect the price correctly. False advertising and price alteration not great for consumers.

Everything was fine except for letting me know at the counter I had to buy liability insurance in Costa Rica that is the law. I have car insurance through my credit card but was told unless provided a letter stating it covers liability and gave them a $5,000 deposit, I had to buy their insurance. The insurance ended up costing more than the car charges. This is something that should be explained prior to making a reservation.

We were told that insurance would b $15-20 a day, and it ended up bein $80 / day and cost more than the rental itself. We compared the charge to the other family who joined us and rented via Hertz, and our insurance cost was 3x what they were charged. We do plan to dispute this charge with our credit card company and will be giving a negative review on google, yelp, etc.

They charged me triple what kayak quoted me, gave me a massive song and dance about how kayak and all 3rd party places are scams and I shouldn’t use them. Gas gauge on the rig was broken to always show full, discovered the truck was down 12 liters of diesel when I picked it up. I still did the ethical thing and topped it off to fill before drop off. The big kicker!! The G-D airport shuttle guy has taken the rest of the day off and I had to pay $15 US for a taxi 1.5 miles down the road! This was at like 8:40 PM when they advertise shuttle is available until 10 pm.

Cons:

Hidden fees and required insurance resulted in a 3x increase to quoted rate from website. Instead of $246.93, total cost was $735.13. Kayak is a joke. This is the ultimate rip-off as there was no way to accurately compare REAL cost of the rental. Further, the front end of this car was in terrible shape. At the first bump encountered, the left front end slammed loudly - which was an indicator of a car that was unsafe to drive. Very disappointed is an understatement.

The car was not in amazing shape. But for us, that was totally fine. It got us up some steep hills and winding, rocky Costa Rican roads. Totally had enough power, got us everywhere but not much of a looker :) Certainly not a Toyota Land Cruiser. But completely funcional.

My prepaid insurance through your website was not honored. I had to spend $250 extra just on the insurance. The car was 5 years old and beat up. It had 110000 kilometers on the odometer. I reserved automatic and I was offered a manual transmission for the same money. Major disappointment. Also they requested $1,000.00 deposit!!! That’s way far from the industry standard.

Cost was supposed to be $224.97 for a week, plus I paid about $88 for Allianz insurance when I booked stateside. On arrival at the rental place in Costa Rica I was told the Allianz insurance only covers collision, and I also need liability insurance. Not sure if this is true or a scam, but ended up paying $495 for the week (rental plus cheapest liability insurance option). The car had 74,000 miles. Low pressure light came on on the last day, so i had to have the gas station pump up the tires, though fortunately did not go flat.

Worse car rental experience ever! After deciding to drop off the car sooner than originally planned, I have visited the office to discuss my refund options and was given a refund breakdown by the front desk person. However, on the day of the return, they gave me a completely different refund amount (HALF of what i was told originally), tried to threaten me, and challenged me to submit a claim with my CC company! After multiple emails back and forth with their "customer service team", they were still unable to provide me with the refund breakdown calculation, and then just ignored my emails all together. I am working through a CC claim at this point. STAY CLEAR, they are obviously struggling, and will rip you off without a second thought.

1) My reservation amount was completely different than what they ended up charging me: I had a reservation for 359 usd and they ended up charging me 544. My boyfriend got them down to the right amount. I knew to expect them to add all the extras and I successfully denied insurance by bringing my CC insurance certificate. I have to say that after we went back to complain she was able to reduce the amount to what it was supposed to be. 2) Car flooded: The rental car clearly had a faulty seal near the windshield because when it rained in Costa Rica, water was pouring in at our feet. It continued to drip for a whole week which made driving quite annoying and wet when it shouldn’t have. 3) car made some freaky noises: The car made questionable sounds intermittently. Usually when turning and breaking. Good things: -return was super easy -I liked that they had a sheet to review and sign off on current damage and suggested we video the car. -they did eventually return the extra charges when we ended up catching them. But this delayed our trip but 1.5 h and we ended up driving after sunset

Our connecting flight got delayed and we missed our flight to Costa Rica by a day. Tried calling them directly to let them know that we would be coming in later than expected. No one answered their phones. Upon arrival the next day they had to offer us a new contract because of the date change. This was fine but they were going to charge us more money for less days due to this (150$ USD). We ended up going with another company. Pretty disappointing.

Bait and switch. Horrible customer service. 1st the reserved car is not available… NOTHING comparable. Price is nothing even close to quoted price. (Of course there may be some slight differences) but this was off by HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS. We were so upset we said ok we will rent for one day to just get to hotel and drive to another rental place tomorrow. He says “one day price is same as 6 day price!!!!” Vehicle he tried to offer smelled so bad of cigarettes and mowed lawn. It looked like it was used as a gardener's vehicle for quite some time. He did not even try to offer a comparable vehicle!!! Our luggage would not fit in what he offered. Luckily we walked NEXT DOOR TO Amigo car rental and had outstanding service!

The car was a total wreck. 4 different and really used up tires. One of them had a slow leak that we had to take care every 100km. We had to remove and put back the 2 front mud guards because they were flopping. Final note, water was getting inside the car every big rain. During the rain season in costa rica.... Never again.

The car was OK (Toyota RAV4), but had over 110k kilometers and was 6 years old. The annoying part is that they keep giving half-empty tanks on pick-up. That way they never have to refuel their cars, as people always return more gas than what they pick up (practically impossible to return the same amount). In case you return less, you get charged for gas. I rented a few times from them, as well as our friends once, and the same thing happened every single time. One time the tank was 1/8 full, so we practically had to drive directly to a gas station. The company regularly has the lowest rates, but their fleet has by far the oldest cars, compared to other rental companies around the airport.

The pick up was not good - very hard to find van, took 30-40 minutes just to get picked up (while many other car rental agency vans came and went). Car itself was not good - over 175k miles, ancient features, no audio, could barely make it up large hills, could not accelerate at all (which is a problem on Costa Rica roads). The best part was the drop off process - that was very quick and easy.

If comfort and safety are of no interest to you then this is your car! Still have a big binder of CDs laying around the house from your teens? Hate back up cameras and automatic transmissions? Think those pesky key fobs are just and inconvenience? This is the car for you! If you would like to double the price for the “mandatory insurance” and get a hold put on your credit card for the entire value of the vehicle, this is the car for you! One positive is that even if you forget something in the car no one is breaking in, because you have the worst car in the lot no matter where you go! Honestly, it’s a shame that kayak recommends places like this. I thought that maybe other rental companies didn’t operate in Costa Rica so this was a good option… turns out all the major car rental companies are there and it doesn’t cost any more than this place. The staff was nice enough, just doing their job… but you can get that most places.

We booked for $238, when we arrived we were driven to a remote area. We were then shown a beat up van, told it would be another $383 for MANDATORY insurance and ANOTHER $1600 for a refundable deposit! I was told if I wanted to cancel I could, but they couldn’t guarantee I would get my prepaid 2 $238 back. The van had a horrible sound underneath in the axle and could barely drive up the hills on the main highways. The only positive experience, was when I texted the actual owner, he had them bring 2 nice Suzukis to replace it. I was happily surprised with how well the change out went. The first part was VERY stressful, but it all worked out okay. I would say 80% of their fleet is pretty busted though. Just know what you are getting into.

Terrible check in experience. Charged 3 times the cost of car for insurance at pickup. Took nearly an hour to get checked in with only two customers in front of us. Other customers left unhappy too due to hidden fees and not having 4x4 vehicles that were requested. Beat up car but mechanically sound. Definitely avoid!

This is a scam. Rental car is asking separate insurance through them which they quoted $980.00 despite me buying comprehensive insurance through Kayak/ Allianz. Also they wanted $3000 deposit. Ended up not renting the car. Please read reviews from other travelers and save vacationers being scammed in a foreign country. Thanks.

The car was dirty when we picked it up, and had faulty windshield wipers. Also, contrary to what we were told by Europcar when we made the online booking, the Europcar agency in Costa Rica did not honour the insurance we have via our Visa card, even though we provided a letter from the insurance company (Manulife, one of the biggest in Canada). Also, when we made the online booking, Europcar informed us that we needed to purchase an international driver's licence for Costa Rica. That information turned out to be incorrect. Not a good experience with Europcar.

The advertised/agreed-upon price is not the same as the price presented by hertz/firefly when you show up to the store store. The google reviews are poor for this store and are correct. The company forces you to provide an insurance letter from your credit card company and forced us to purchase 3d party collision insurance and more than doubled the agreed-upon price.
