Cost not as advertised, poor vehicle conditionPros:The person at the counter was niceCons:I made a reservation for unlimited miles and when I arrived to pick up my car at the understaffed office I was informed that since I was a local for unlimited miles I would have to pay an additional $20 a day. After all the additional charges the cost of rental doubled. I initially paid $330 for the week, then was charged another $470 for miscellaneous fees and $220 for the unlimited mileage package. The car was a mess and still had trash in it from the previous renter. The windshield wipers didn't work and were a hazard during a rainstorm, the front tires were bald, and there were glass shards in the dash cubby above the glove box. I felt sorry for the staff that has to deal with unhappy customers that have to wait in line for over an hour to get their cars because they understaff the facility and then have to tell them about the additional fees after they have already prepaid for the rental.Reviewed 16 Jul 2018

Maybe We Expected Too Much?Pros:Shuttle drivers were great -- really seemed to care.Cons:Only had one agent working at counter. I was second in line but agent didn't bother to take first customer for 5 minutes or so. It seemed like she was doing "busy work" that could have waited until later. There was a ceiling tile half opened with water dripping out of it into a bucket on the counter. Advantage would be surprised to know that a simple "please excuse the inconvenience" would give customers the impression that this was an unusual occurrence and they were trying to solve the problem. Instead it provided a first impression that their facility was in disrepair and perhaps their vehicles were as well.Reviewed 25 Jun 2018

Terrible Customer Service at the Time of PickupPros:The process of returning the car was extremely smooth and the executive was extremely helpful.Cons:The customer service representative present at the time of taking the car at Advantage RDU Airport was rude and unprofessional. He refused to give me the promised small car and in fact asked me to take a minivan. He asked me to pay more if I wanted a small car. He also said that I got the car for such cheap price o $8/day, why was I being choosy. I had to convince him for 30 minutes and finally when I told him I was going to call Kayak, he gave me a small car. Whereas previously he had been saying he doesn't have one for me. Extremely stressful experience more so when my car had broken down and I urgently needed the car for an exam in Charlotte. I hope you take it further with Advantage so they don't harass customers unnecessarily. I had a similar issue with them in Dec 2014.Reviewed 10 Jan 2016

NonsenseCons:let's count the ways....1) i need to prove my insurance at the counter pick up, have never had to do this before, and would have to buy their insurance without proof, did i have my insurance info...probably not but didn't matter due to next issue; 2) 250 mile limit per day, signed up for unlimited miles and now I need to pay extra $20/day if i want unlimited. This company's attitude is absolute nonsense, especially with 5 other competitors within walking distance. Cancelled my reservation, walked over to Thrifty as a walk-in and had car in hand in 10 minutes. No issues there with anything.Reviewed 29 Aug 2017

Seemed very disorganized...Cons:1, Even after a phone call, there was no shuttle to take us to the rental office from our terminal. A very nice gentleman driving a competitors shuttle drove us to the rental office. 2, Once at the rental office, we were pressured into purchasing add-ons for fuel, toll roads and insurance; which we did not need. 3, We were asked to find our vehicle in their lot, inspect it, then return to the rental office for a check in. 4, Returning to the rental office was smooth, however both employees we came in contact with seemed frustrated with life in general and had nothing good to say about anything.Reviewed 14 Nov 2018

Great value for the price, but be aware of your rePros:Value, as in price paid for the vehicle, is outstanding; and I'd rent from Advantage again. While I've listed two drawbacks, I should say the Advantage counter rep made sure that I understood my responsibility for visually inspecting the vehicle, as well as the implications of declining additional (insurance) coverage to cover any incidental damage.Cons:Only drawbacks, which may or may not be tenable for you: 1) The Advantage courtesy van runs at a much lower frequency than the "more notable" rental agencies (e.g., Hertz, Avis, Alamo). I waited long enough at the airport that I worried "Perhaps Advantage doesn't really offer a shuttle" and spent time looking up the contact number and calling customer service to verify. 2) They leave it up to you to identify any pre-existing wear or damage to the vehicle before you drive it off of their lot. This check should be performed by an Advantage rep and verified by the customer.Reviewed 29 Mar 2016

Insurance BadgeringPros:It was not busy at the time that I picked up my car and the time to complete the transaction was fairly reasonable. However, I did purchase the insurance that was offered online, but was badgered into getting much more coverage to fully protect the vehicle. The agent went through a litany of scenarios where if the car was damaged that I would not only be charged for the repairs but also for the Dailey storage of the vehicle while it was being repaired. I finally gave in because I had to relatives with physical limitations waiting for me back at the terminal to pick them up.Cons:It was not busy at the time that I picked up my car and the time to complete the transaction was fairly reasonable.Reviewed 31 Oct 2018

Car smelled like smoke.Pros:Speedy van service to and from airport terminal.Cons:Very slow service to bring us a car. First car had soaked back seat. Believe they took it through car wash with windows open. Second car came and smelled like smoke. We mentioned it and they said oh no that's just the cleaning process. When we returned car and told again about smoke smell they said they would not charge us for the cleaning to remove smoke smell. Huh? We mentioned it when we first took the car. Still waiting for "manager" to call us back. Also charge for spouse to drive car is an additional $12 per day!!!Reviewed 10 Dec 2015

Terrible customer servicePros:Staff at the RDU and IAD locations were friendly. Base rental rate seemed like a good value. Vehicle was reasonably clean and in good condition.Cons:The first vehicle they gave me had its check engine light on and after leaving the parking lot, I had to come back and exchange it for another one. Not a huge deal, but certainly an inconvenience. I wish that's where my frustrations ended... On the day that I was scheduled to return the vehicle, the entire Southwest terminal was closed due to weather. I found out at 11pm the night before that my flight was rebooked at another airport. I immediately called Advantage to let them know and they informed me that I would be charged a $200 one-way drop off fee. That's a steep fee but I would understand that I'm responsible for it if I had changed my plans voluntarily. When I expressed that I felt it was unfair since ALL Southwest flights were cancelled, the customer service agent told me that I had to call corporate and gave me another phone number. I called "corporate" and spoke to a very rude woman who told me to call the drop off location. I called, and they instructed me to call the pick up location. The phone number listed on Advantage's website for the pickup location connects to a disconnected Verizon number. After several phone calls and hours of my time, nobody has been helpful and I have been charged over $250 to drive a Nissan Versa for 48 hours. I called multiple other rental car vendors at the RDU airport for comparison and none of them charged their cancelled Southwest customers a one-way drop fee. I really feel like Advantage took advantage of the fact that I was stuck flying out or another airport. I should have heeded all of the negative reviews online. This is no way to treat a customer.Reviewed 9 Jan 2017

Good deals but you pay for what you getPros:I like the affordability of advantage rent a car.Cons:The service was very sub par. I walked into the facility and there was one person working at 5pm. Luckily I was the first in line because the que got very big. I felt horrible for the girl working the front desk by herself. When I finished signing the paperwork, I had to wait 20 mins to get the car. No one was around to pull the car up or help. Understaff goes with the low pricing you pay at this location.Reviewed 11 Jan 2016

Rent a WreckPros:Shuttle driver and return agent were both prompt and courteousCons:First car I was offered had huge dent in the side, so asked the agent for a different car. He then stated I was stressed/uptight and needed to relax. The second car had bald tires and the drivers door did not close correctly, but I drove it rather than return to the agent again.Reviewed 22 Feb 2016

The good and the badPros:Easy pickup/drop off. Nice staff, convenient shuttle.Cons:Car smelled horribly of cigarette smoke — which was then sprayed with some awful, floral smelling something to cover the smoke smell. It was horrible and with the heat, it did not go away the entire nine days we had the rental. Unfortunately it appeared to be the only minivan on the lot, which is what we needed.Reviewed 10 Jul 2018
