Pros: Wonderfully unique property right in the middle of San Pedro. They do a wonderful job of making the entire property feel like a home for friends. We really enjoyed the nightly wine and cheese - it was a great way to meet other travelers and talk about the different experiences. Breakfast, tea, constant homemade cookies, and tips on where to have dinner meant that you were in no danger of going hungry! The communal spaces are inviting and numerous - there was no reason to stay in your room. Everyone was so warm and really made us feel like we were special. I hated to leave and would happily return.

Pros: I rarely write reviews, but felt compelled in this instance. I actually left Terrantai feeling a little better about the world at large. They were so warm and welcoming, and truly bent over backwards to help make my stay an San Pedro a great experience. This was not one staff member alone, but everyone I interacted with. For a stay that will leave you with a little smile in your heart, book Terrantai and don’t look back!

Cons: The lack of a/c was only an issue on the first day. I assume the room had been cleaned the day before and hadn’t been opened in 24 hrs. The room would get rather warm during the day and would take awhile to cool down but keeping both doors open and using the fan would take care of it.

Cons: The hotel and room felt slightly tired. Within the room there were multiple issues: 1. Bathroom door was damaged 2. Shower screen was damaged 3. Ceiling dirty with multiple squashed bugs (on arrival) 4. Loud fridge 5. Could hear other (optionally co-joined rooms) easily which kept us awake. This was not a reflection on the staff as the room was clean at all points.

Cons: No air conditioning in a room where temperatures in the afternoon well exceeded 85 degrees. To cool the room you had to sleep at night with the door OPEN to get some cross breeze. Pool nothing like the picture, shallow, narrow as there is an underwater ledge for presumably all sitting in a row. The bamboo umbrellas around the pool are at eye level height and one person, fortunately wearing glasses, had the bamboo hit right in the face. If you’re under 5 ft you should just be fine. Rattan outdoor chairs were rough and some lacked cushions. There was no hot water one morning at all so no showers all around. All this for close to US$400 a night is not acceptable. Based on this experience I’d probably avoid all NOi hotels if this is how they’re run.

She was also very attentive, accommodating, and caring. She waited outside with me at 7:30am in the morning for a tour bus to come pick me up, because I wasn't sure if they were going to come. She's very sweet. Probably the best part of this hostel/hostal.
Another plus was that the beds were comfortable and the bathroom was clean and they always had hot water. In San Pedro you can't always expect this.

Cons: I really wanted to like this place it just had a hostile vibe. There were notes everywhere telling you what you can't do and the fines you'll get if you do something wrong, it really wasn't inviting. I changed hostels.

Cons: With all the money conversions plus credit card fees we payed about 10 € more in total and they same happened to other guests. The room we were in was interconnected through a door to a private appartment, so people getting up at 4 am to go on tours could be heard as if they were in the same room.

Cons: I know it's San Pedro, and installations are lacking, but there was no heat in the hostal. So beware if you come in the winter. At night and in the morning it gets below zero degrees celsius. In bed I was fine because I had enough covers and she even offered extra blankets, but walking around the hostal at night and in the morning is freezing.
Another downside is that you can't pay with credit card. ONLY CASH. They also don't give you a VAT refund. I already knew this beforehand.
The walls are also paper thin so you hear everything outside in the shared areas and hear people in the other rooms. Luckily I always travel with earplugs so this wasn't a huge deal for me.
In the end, San Pedro is really expensive and very rustic. Don't expect the comforts that you have at home in North America, Europe, and NE Asia. All in all, the landscape is amazing and it's worth spending the cash to see all the beauty and wonders that Atacama has to offer.

I was given a map and directions on how to get to the town centre and bus terminal. It was very easy to wash and dry clothes! It seemed expensive but I think prices are generally high in San Pedro.

Cons: Our room was facing the sun and so at night the walls were literally radiating heat, making the room incredibly hot, even with the window wide open! With no fan and mosquitoes around, it made it pretty difficult to sleep.

Cons: It was a 10 to 15 minute hot and dusty walk to the centre if you needed to go in the middle of the day. There was no air conditioning or fans in my room which became very hot during the day. It was cool at night. The view from my window was the secure parking area - with a dog which tended to bark at night. When I arrived the man at reception was friendly but did not speak English - a problem if you are reading this and don’t speak Spanish. There was not much tourist information offered but this is not a problem as there are dozens of tour agencies in Calle Caracoles where they speak multiple languages.

There was also a man who was passed out on the toilet in the women's bathroom in the morning with his pants down and five stray dogs with him. He wasn't a guest there either as he finally woke up and left the property.

Pros: This is probably the cleanest hostal I've ever stayed in. Toilets are cleaned a few times a day. Kitchen, available to guests, very clean and tidy. It is very cheap and economical and about 5-10mins walk to the centre of town. The Residencial Restaurant Chiloe is at the intersection of Domingo Atienza and Gustavo le Paige. Walk out the front gate, turn right walk 50m. The restaurant is almost always empty so you get served quickly. The food is excellent and most days I ordered the "menu del dia" CLP6500 which was very tasty and filling. Perfect for a quick meal when I would get back late evening from touring/photography in the calderas.

Cons: They force you to pay cash with the excuse of a tax of 18% if pay with card, that is not legal because that tax doesn’t apply to foreigner but even if you tell them they will not change it and say “we give you opportunity to do not pay the tax by paying cash”. The room was small and under the roof, so was not possible to stand in it.

Cons: No towels for the budget rooms. I wasn't shown all that was available; I needed to ask about all of that. It's easier when the staff simply gives you a quick tour and gives you reminders. They should remind us that breakfast isn't included and that it should be paid for (with the budget rooms).

Cons: It is very noisy. The cleaners basically wake you up at 9 weather you want or not as they clean they keep talking on the corridor for 2 hrs minimum without any considerstion for the people trying to get few extra hours of sleep! So if u want to get a sleep later forget about this hostel as u will wake up early or break your sleep weather you like ot or not! And this happened every day! Also the rooms are very very very cold. It is warmer on the corridor and the bathrooms than my room . I basically froze to death and could not sleep I used my trousers and winter jacket and still could not sleep for hours without gloves and hat so really really be aware there is absolutely no heating at all as they advertise is false!! Outside 20 degrees during the day and in the room like less than 10 !

Cons: The listing on booking.com said that onsite parking was available. It isn't. There is a hotel and hostal on the same site. Parking is for hotel guests not hostal guests. If available you can park there. I was only able to park there 1 night out of a 9 night stay. All the other nights, I parked in a public parking area 400m away. There are only two showers for men (and probably two for the women). In the mens, one cubicle has hot water, the other had cold water from both hot and cold water taps. So you have to make sure you get the shower cubicle with hot water. Stairs to the rooms are very steep and narrow. Very difficult to carry a large suitcase more suited to a backpack. There is no heating anywhere so the rooms and everywhere else is very cold. This is all to be expected in such a cheap place. Just make sure you have a sleeping bag and extra warm clothes to wear in winter.
