This was a horrible experience getting dragged through the coals by car rentals.com and foxCons:
Problem 1: I accidentally submit the rental for two days and I only neede the car one. There was no way to change this even after retuning the car in ) hours I still had to pay for two. Kayak said the car would be fifteen dollars a day... the site recharged me 58 dollars (two days) and the guy at the counter tried to charge me 123 dollars with tacked in charges. How we got to 123 dollars from 15 is mysterious. I had to fight to get the total down to 70 and this still seems like way too much for borrowing a car for 6 hours.Alamo

Airport drop-off at ACV was unclear how to leave vehicle after hours. 11am and nobody was there to receive the vehicle after Eureka office told me I could leave it there. There was a key drop where I left it, noted date/time/mileage, but beyond that it wasn't clear if it was OK to leave it.Budget

Scheduled a 10:00pm pick up. Arrived before 10. The Dollar counter at SFO was closed, and Dollar left us literally stranded at the airport. Luckily the Avis desk was open, but of course they only had SUV’s available.. so my $130 rental turned into a $200 rental and about an about of lost time at the airport. The receptionist at the Avis desk admitted that they (Avis) and most other employees at the rental car desks will commonly leave early well before the stated hours of operation, stranding people at the airport. I politely told her what I thought of her and took my overpriced “SUV” which turned out to be a Ford Escape.. hardly an SUV.Cons:

Was hard to see in the dark garage, but once you got into the sunlight you could see a few dents, and also how dirty the car was. Then, a few miles in the car started saying it was overdue for an oil change, that makes me wonder how well they check these cars over when it's already OVERdue! My husband booked my car in advance online. When I arrived at the pickup at SFO, the agent took three times as long as the agents around her. In addition, she claimed the cost was going to be $170+ when we booked for a rate of $70. I brought this to her attention, but she claimed fees and taxes brought the cost up. She also said the car had to be returned that day by 6:00. We later discovered we could not return the car that day and that we would only be charged $90. Totally unnecessary worry thanks to an impatient and incorrect agent.6.0 Okay

the customer service, particularly at check in, was sadly lacking. I was in line for an agent when an employee told several of us to step out of line to use the kiosks. Since I had a reservation, I assumed this would be an automated process, so it made sense. But no, it was just a video conference line to other agents, who did not answer. So, we stood at the kiosks for 20 minutes, waiting while the people who had stayed in line got served. Not one of us at the kiosk even got a response. Finally, we went back into line- the back of the line- which by now was considerably longer. An agent spent a further 20 minutes fooling with the kiosks, instead of getting behind a desk to help the now stacked up customers. when we got to the desk- it took an inordinate amount of time, especially given that I had a reservation. I wanted to add a driver. The agent told us that the second driver would have to sign up at the exit gate (not true) - no one said anything about tolls, so when we crossed the bay bridge we were left wondering if we should pay cash, or the rental car would be charged.... directions to the car in the garage were abysmal- which I know sounds petty, but when your 71/2 months pregnant and schlepping luggage just makes a poor impression worse. returning it was easy enough, we'll see what happens with tolls. It was nothing catastrophic, but overall, it just left a bad enough taste that i'll try another agency for my next trip.10.0 Wonderful
