Santo Domingo car hire experiences: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travellers who hired a car in Santo Domingo

Driving in Dominican Republic is not as dangerous as you may read online. Just adapt your driving to the local rules, or absence of rules. It may seem chaotic, but there’s much consideration from all users.
Verified travelerFeb 2024
Driving is dangerous I’m Santo Domingo but if you take your time and drive with awareness you will be alright.
Verified travelerSept 2023
Be careful driving in Dominican Republic. Also be careful with traffic police officers on the road. When you rent a car, they seem to stop you more than they would stop tourists even when driving under speed limit. Be mindful of speed limits.
JoseOct 2023
Not to rent at Alamo and go to another car rental. Always double check the car before leaving the airport and don’t ever stay quiet.
Verified travelerAug 2023
Buy the insurance as soon as you secure the car reservation.

KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Santo Domingo

  • Renting a car for your time in Santo Domingo is definitely a good choice, as public transport is unreliable and often takes twice as long as going by car. Taxis can be very expensive and, unless you want to employ one of the carros pùblicos, which are taxis where various people are crammed in and dropped off one by one at their destination, a car is your best option.
  • Start your journey hassle-free and rent a car directly from the airport grounds of Santo Domingo Airport (SDQ). Located in the north terminal, there are various agencies who offer vehicles for all tastes. The airport is over 19 miles from the city center and public transport is not available directly from the airport, so driving by car is your best choice. Via the scenic coastline Autopista Las Americas, travelers will be in Santo Domingo’s center in about half an hour.
  • Most street signs in Santo Domingo are only stated in Spanish, so, unless you speak the language, it is advised to rent a GPS system with your hire car and also map out your journeys beforehand. Pedestrians are known to simply cross the road without looking, so drive defensively and attentively and always double-check before turning a corner or entering an intersection. Due to badly lit streets and cars driving without headlights, it is also not recommended to drive at night.
  • Santo Domingo’s traffic can be challenging to navigate in the increased peak times of around 7:30-9:30am and 5-7pm, as many commuters clog up the streets. Don’t be surprised when motorcyclists simply squeeze through cars lined up in traffic jams, as it is very common in Santo Domingo. The Expreso 27 de Febrero runs straight through the heart of the city to the coast line and should be avoided during rush hour.
  • Small rental cars in Santo Domingo are around 33% cheaper than other car types, on average

FAQs about renting a car in Santo Domingo

  • What type of car is recommended for driving in Santo Domingo?

As there are many one-way roads, traffic laws are often considered suggestions by local drivers, and streets can be in poor state, opt for a smaller car that will be easier to turn around, find a parking spot and swerve away from other vehicles. Also remember not to leave any valuable items in the car, especially not within sight.

  • What’s the speed limit in Santo Domingo?

Adhere to the speed limits in Santo Domingo even if locals do not. The police have their eyes specifically on tourists, so do not take any risks. General limits permit 40 km/h (24 mph) in built-up areas, 80 km/h (49 mph) on rural dual carriageway roads, and up to 120 km/h (74 mph) on freeways.

  • Where are the best places to park in Santo Domingo?

If possible, opt for a hotel that has parking included as the parking space may be safer and it is simply more convenient. On-street parking is also an option and is usually supervised by an attendant who requires a small donation to do so. There are also various parking lots close to El Conde, Ave Mella, or Calle Jose Reyes, to name a few.

  • How can I find car hires near me in Santo Domingo?

Take a look at our extensive car hire location map to find the best car hire deals near you.

  • How much does a Small car rental cost in Santo Domingo?

A Small car rental in Santo Domingo costs $41 per day, on average.

  • How much does a Medium car rental cost in Santo Domingo?

A Medium car rental in Santo Domingo costs $63 per day, on average.

  • How much does a Large car rental cost in Santo Domingo?

The staff were friendly, and the car was in good condition. However my rental was supposed to be $83.98 with the $300 deposit that was blocked on my card to be released on return of the car. The $300 is still out of my account nearly two weeks later. It has cost me $400 for renting a car for a few hours.

The man at the counter at Europ Car forced me to take out insurance. I told him several times that I didn't want to take out insurance. He insisted on that. He said it was mandatory in the Dominican Republic. He wanted another $800. The cheaper option is $500. But that was more than I paid for the vehicle. When I wanted to leave after more than an hour, he talked me into taking out a minimum insurance policy of $350. Because I was unsure and wanted to leave quickly, I reluctantly agreed. A very bad experience.

WORST RENTAL EXPERIENCE. Our flight was delayed and we arrived a few hours later than the pickup time at the AVIS counter at the airport. They just CANCELLED our reservation and offered us another car for three times the original price that was written in our contract. They had all our flight informations and were supposed to know about potential delays but they just ‘didn't check’… We had to rent another car, last minute, with another company for 50% more money and got a small city car instead of a (much needed for our trip) SUV. Again, WORST RENTAL EXPERIENCE!

Terrible. We waited over 1.5 hour at the airport before being picked up. The first car we got was in pretty bad shape and 2 hours after getting it the car wouldn’t turn on. They brought us a new car. I specifically asked that we have a 4WD and the guy assured me it was. However on our trip we got stuck half-way up a mountain because the car was in fact not a 4WD so we couldn’t do several activities or restaurants because we couldn’t reach their location.
