Power outages, no air conditioning alot of mosquitoes weird bad smell
We wanted to like this place more than we did. The room was charming and well-designed. I liked the billowy white curtains flapping in the breeze, and there was a simplicity that was appealing. Pili, the manager, was incredibly accommodating when we decided to change hotels, and gave us plenty of recommendations for places to visit. She offered us a reduced fee for the nights we weren't staying. It was nice not to feel judged for wanting to enjoy our vacation. :)
Ultimately the cabana was just too rustic for us, and we're people who have lived in a van for a year and enjoy camping. I imagine in winter it is more comfortable, but neither of us could sleep with the heat, though there are fans. We expected this to some extent, but thought being so close to the beach would make up for it--be aware that the beaches are more or less unusable if the Sargasso is in full bloom. The weather and algae are not the responsibility of Tunich's, but we would have been very unhappy there. The area nearby is mostly expensive restaurants and a few boutiques--not the laid-back vibe of the center of town. You're quite removed from that, and yet it seemed busier and more crowded on the beach road than in the middle of town, somehow. We felt that regardless of the weather, it wasn't a great value given how easy it is to take a cab or bike around Tulum to get to beaches or cenotes. (We ended up staying just east of the center of town, which was perfect). Mosquitos were also intense--had we stayed, we would have been slathered in DEET the entire trip.
The rooms were great, bed extra comfy. The breakfast each morning was perfect. The staff were wonderful providing great service, hints and tips on different places to visit.
The lights could be brighter, but o worry about how many more bugs that could attract.
Breakfast is decent, although the one included is just small continental so most likely you'll have to buy some extras to it.
Description states there is a car park nearby. The one that's close is ridiculously expensive (100 peso an hour) and the staff didn't really help to find a good one. Had to park the car 10 minutes walking distance from the hotel which is not ideal.
We enjoyed our stay in the cabanas. The location is great, close to beach, lots of taxis around, bicycle rental just in front, lots of cute restaurants. Rooms are nicely decorated and the bed is comfy. Nice to have little terrace outside. Staff is friendly and helpful.
We were aware that there will be no air conditioner so there is no complaint about it just if you travelling and planning to stay longer be aware it can get really hot. I got food poisoning, was sick and had a high fever so staying in a place with no air con was a bit of a nightmare. So next time i’ll take this into consideration for sure. Worth adding few cups or glasses to the room.
