Pros: It could not have been better from arrival and to departure. I travelled with my 16 year old daughter who had the best time. She went to the gym and spa every day. The staff were just exceptional and so friendly. My daughter got ill while she was there and the hotel staff were so kind and understanding. I will definitely be going back to spend time again at this amazing hotel. It was quiet, peaceful,the most beautiful location, I can’t recommended it highly enough.

I understand the need to maintain the history, but there must be a better way to make it more modern while maintaining the legacy / ancien character

Pros: I really like everything about my duplex suite and the hotel. It is a modern, spacious, and state of art, two-floor duplex suite. The ocean view from both rooms is spectacular. The food of breakfast and the ocean side, glass breakfast room are just out of this world. Most importantly, the staff is experienced, professional, friendly, and highly helpful. I will come back.

Pros: I really like everything about my duplex suite and the hotel. It is a modern, spacious, and state of art, two-floor duplex suite. The ocean view from both rooms is spectacular. Cons: It is not a big deal but probably a hairdryer for the first-floor bathroom will be nice. This way people using the first-floor bathroom do not need to go upstairs for a hairdryer even there is an elevator in the unit.

Pros: This is a 5-star hotel which is like a cruise ship on land - there is really no need to leave the place if you don't want to... Breakfast, lunch and dinner are available at a good standard. Drinks with dinner are extra, but really good value: we had an excellent 2015 Portugeuse red for less than €20. There are 3 swimming pools plus a jetty in the sea which is warm and very deep. There are gym facilities and a big wellness spa. There is an activities ambassador available to book trips and experiences for guests. Staff are warm and friendly. The views south across the Atlantic ocean are spectacular.

Cons: Nothing It’s a 20minute walk into Funchal or you can but a weekly bus ticket for €22 which we did and was very useful to also get to starting point of some of the levada walks

Cons: The staff doesn't know how to smile or be nice to the customers. More than once, people have been rude to us at the welcome desk (especially a blond lady speaking about us in Portuguese). Only the staff in the dining room was nice. Please, train your people at the front desk, they don't offer a 5-star service!

Cons: When we arrived, we realised that there were major building works directly opposite. It went on from 0900 to 1745 every day.... Relentless. The work has only just started so it's going to be going on for a while! We discovered that those that booked through companies like Thomas Cook had all been warned, had room upgrades and discounts. Not ideal for the rest of us. Even sitting by the pool was very trying with the noise. On asking for an explanation, the reception staff was were delightful but the Manager refused to discuss it and made it perfectly clear they didn't care. A great hotel but the noise spoilt our stay!!

Cons: Unfortunately staff made us feel like an inconvenience to them and barely made eye contact when we walked in the entrance or into the dining room for breakfast. When my partner asked for information on laundry service he was directed to the “info card” in our hotel room, which we never found and he endedr up having to wash his clothes in the sink. We had to get someone to the room to troubleshoot the broken AC unit and wifi that would not hold connection. The gentleman who came tried to blame us for having the patio door open and the fact we have Apple products as to why things were not working before even checking to see what the issues were. After “mansplaining” to me how having the patio door open would turn off the AC he then realized the wall unit was not working (hence needing outside air) and left. We had to put in a second request for it to be fixed after nothing was done/no update given after a day. I understand malfunctions happen but how it was handled could have made for a better experience. Made me wish we had stayed at an AirBnb in the Old Town. Too bad.

Cons: The jacuzzis were a little hard to find but you know what, it was a blessing! When we found them (inside behind the indoor pool) we had three massive jacuzzis on three floors entirely to ourselves for the entire day. Little tip for you ;)

Cons: Not one thing to complain about the hotel. The only thing I'd mention, although it's a lovely walk to Funchal itself the first couple of times... After that you start to feel it could be just that little far out from the main parts.

Cons: The food is what you would expect from an all inclusive and we had dinner out most nights. The speciality restaurants are hardly ever open (only one of them during our stay was) and has only one sitting at 6:30. The one time we eat in one the menu was set and really was very poor. The food in the buffet at night (the only option most nights despite multiple restaurants being advertised) was terrible. There is also a stupid rule about not wearing shorts which with the standard of the overall dining experience is laughable. Especially as women are allowed in wearing extremely short dresses and no other dress code rule is attempted meaning most of the people in there look more dressed to eat in a weatherspoons type pub.

Pros: Location is great, breakfast is good with lots of choice, the a la carte restaurant (weekends only) is also very good. There is live music and a bar in the evening. Staff were always friendly and helpful. We were very kindly offered a one night exchange to bungalow house in another location (North West of island) free of charge, which was also in a good location and a nice change of scenery. Swimming pools are also very nice, some next to the sea.

Pros: The hotel was amazing. The staff were so friendly and helpful and upgraded us on arrival. There were so many swimming pools and sunbeds and the gardens were beautiful. The sea views are breathtaking and the location is perfect. There are so many bars and restaurants close by and the marina a few minutes walk away. It totally exceeded my expectation and was great value for money. The rooms were perfectly clean and had everything we needed. I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

Pros: So I decided to try somewhere new. Somewhere that I’ve never been to before and I chose Funchal, Madeira. Having carried out an extensive search of possible locations to stay at, I opted for the Pestana Carlton. Having read the reviews it sounded quite a pleasurable place to stay: and it was!!! Once finally settled into the room that I actually booked (see comment below for details), I was pleasantly reassured by the amazing view of the Atlantic Ocean and the hotel landscape. Very attractive indeed! The room is spacious, light and reflects the blue hues of the sea view. The hotel has a good range of facilities: pool, bars, spa treatments, places to eat; but the entertainment is not the most exciting. However, it suits the main clientele of the hotel: 50+++ Staff are pleasant on the whole. They are not intrusive. In some cases, a little slow in serving or clearing tables but not drastically. Breakfast is sufficient. Although it’s much the same everyday, there is more than enough to choose from to set you up for the day of exploration. The hotel is situated near a promenade of restaurants/bars. There is a shop and supermarket not too far from the hotel. The city centre is a 10 min walk away or a €1.95 bus ride. It is also on route of the two prominent hop on and off bus tours. That was convenient for me as it became my bus service to and from the hotel for two days (€26). There is a Chinese buffet on the Main Street, 2 minutes walk from the hotel, reasonable food and price (€10.50). There is parking available at the hotel if you were to hire a car; but to be honest, you’re so close to the bus service/stop, it’s not worth it.

It was big enough - the bathroom was also big. The wifi was free and the connection was good in the various parts of the hotel. Room without a sea view is obviously less than perfect but that's expected.

Cons: Only complaint was the service on arrival. I had booked a sea-view room. However, once checked in, the room given to me was a side-view partial sea view room. I returned to reception and requested that my room be changed. I was taken to view another room, which was more suitable. Then when I went to get my bags from the original room, they were gone. The porter had taken them but without saying that he was doing so. I was not happy with that, especially as my bag was left opened. To top it all, the porter became attitudinal when I reprimanded him for taking my bag without permission. He never said hello to me again for the rest of the time I saw him in the hotel. Now, that aside, there are no major concerns or negative comments. I would say that although the hotel has been awarded five stars, the facilities on offer may warrant the 5⭐️ but the decor, service and overall experience is more 4⭐️. It lacks the luxury most 5⭐️ hotels usually offer. Having said that, would I stay there again? Yes I would. The view is 5⭐️, as is the tranquility; which is what I craved this holiday!

The hotel itself was near the sea and there were many lovely restaurants nearby. We were able to use tour bus to nearby stop where we bought a 48 hr hop on and off Yellow Bus for three routes. It enabled us to do cable car and glass floor viewing station too so proved to be very convenient and cost effective. Caught airline bus back to airport from same stop on departure day. Hourly service cost 5 euro to airport very handy and much cheaper than taxi. Great hotel, we had a brilliant stay.

Pros: I admire the untouched charm of nature of Madeira and comfort of this hotel. Madeira Panoramico is fantastical hotel! It is nice, cosy and very clean. Its situation in the nature is ideally. It has beautiful views on ocean, mountains and Funchal. My room ( on the third floor) was spacious, comfortable, with all conveniences, big balcony and wonderful views on ocean. I could see the unforgettable sunrises and sunsets! The breakfast is excellent! I like the friendly, highly skilled staff of the hotel. I thank Rita, Monica, Carolina, Pedro, Paula, Nuno and other specialists of reception, Emanuel (excellent driver!) and Sonja(clean room is her merit) for attention, care, understanding and help. Pros: I admire the untouched charm of nature of Madeira and comfort of this hotel. Madeira Panoramico is fantastical hotel! It is nice, cosy and very clean. Its situation in the nature is ideally. It has beautiful views on ocean, mountains and Funchal. My room ( on the third floor) was spacious, comfortable, with all conveniences, big balcony and wonderful views on ocean. I could see the unforgettable sunrises and sunsets! The breakfast is excellent! I like the friendly, highly skilled staff of the hotel. I thank Rita, Monica, Carolina, Pedro, Paula, Nuno and other specialists of reception, Emanuel (excellent driver!) and Sonja(clean room is her merit) for attention, care, understanding and help. I recommend this beautiful, hospitable hotel for the rest on Madeira.

With windows open, mosquitoes were on the prowl. The one evening meal we had was disappointing with slow service and average food. The veg my wife was served with her fish were SPROUTS (for heaven's sake) and carrots cut as for old school dinners. The service was slow making for a dull ambience. I understand similar rooms had been refurbed and so we felt let down by our room.

Cons: Average quality breakfast. What's worse is a relatively small selection, and every day is the same. So, for example, for a week's stay, It's big a minus. Smoking on the room's balcony is allowed so if Your neighbor is smoking than You have a smoke smell in the room. We've got this problem and it was solved by transferring us (not smoker) to another room. Unfortunately, the new one was from the street, not pool side so noise in the early morning was quite big. Swimming pool chairs uncomfortable.

The breakfast options were unexciting, if you are staying longer than a few days you will want to seek options elsewhere. Cons: it doesn't have to do with the hotel per se, but the clients tend to be in their retirement age, so not a young crowd/atmosphere over there.

Cons: It's a bit noisy - some unavoidable road noise as the hotel is close to a busy road and the pool filtering system is also noisy from around 6 am. The open air pool is also very cold.

Cons: Breakfast was just ok, no milk jugs, orange juice was some cheap powdered squash, bacon was greasy. Rooms need updating, manky shower curtain, rusty mirror, 3 beds in our double room. Kettle in room but no teabags, coffee sugar or milk!

Cons: Trips were expensive. We booked through a company outside the hotel and it was half the price. They also charge extra for the room safe if you want to use it, we chose not to.

Cons: First room overlooked the road and was very noisy due to traffic and nearby bar with live music. Breakfast was ok - a big selection if you eat animal products but I'm vegan and so there was very little for my tastes.

Cons: Rooms market themselves as being different, as we were a party of 3 we had 2 rooms (deluxe and standard) which had no difference for the price difference.

Cons: The fact that my wi-fi connection was as slow as molasses. I complained the first day and asked for another room and was denied with the argument that the hotel was full. But was not offered another room on subsquent days when it was obvious that new guests were checking in and out everyday. I even offered to carry my own bags to another room. The odd fact is that I stayed at this hotel earlier this year and I would not have returned if I had had problems with the wi-fi. It was just sheer stubbornes on the part of the staff, and that a repeat customer is not worth having.

Cons: Room I booked and paid for was not the room I got, I complained and was offered the room next door which was worse, after speaking to a lady in the same hotel she informed me that she had booked a deluxe room and a standard room and both rooms were exactly the same, the list of facilities in the room which should have been included were none existent, no minibar no slippers and robe, no ironing facilities which we had to ask for
