Top tips for hiring a car at Charleston Municipal Airport

  • Charleston Airport is about a 15min drive from the city center via I-26E and US-78 E. Bus service from the airport is limited to downtown and the North Charleston areas. Therefore, car rental at Charleston Airport is the easiest and the quickest way to get to your hotel or vacation rental. Although you can book a rental car when you land, if you're traveling from Monday through Thursday during business hours, it is recommended that you make a reservation. This is because airport traffic can be busy during these hours.

The rental car operation at CHS was overwhelmed - I waited an over an hour waiting in lines. They had to pull my vehicle from a remote lot - it wasn’t in the garage. The car was clean on the outside but the interior was not - my wife spent time wiping everything down. The tires were really worn - I wish that I had more time to reject the vehicle - bald spots on all four tires. Returning to Budget at OKC was fast and friendly - that part of the rental was terrific!

I prepaid my car in full. When I finally got to the counter after waiting an hour in line they had my reservation but said I didn't pay yet. I had to wait another hour for the manager to call me, who was of no help. I had to pay again and this time had to pay $100 more than I paid originally. Not I have to fight with Budget to get my well deserved money back. Absolutely awful. Will never ever rent from Budget again and will tell everyone in the world to stay away.

The entire experience could not have been worse! 2 1/2 hours in line (in spite of pre paying, and ensuring I was part of the Fast Break program) to be given a 12 passenger van at an offsite lot. I will never use Budget (or Avis) again...

My rental car was a mini-van instead of the medium size SUV I reserved. More importantly, this vehicle when running had the thermostat stuck at 76 degrees and the screen would not turn on for me to neither adjust temperature or change the radio station. Any time I was driving, the dashboard would beep alerting me of ‘maintenance required’. Also since maintenance was required, the blind side alert and backup camera would not work but again car would beep every 15 seconds reminding me of this fact. The thermostat stuck at 76 degrees made for a very uncomfortable ride and with all the issues with the dashboard I also for some reason could not roll down the windows either. It was stifling hot so I always had a headache due to the temperature in the vehicle. My first time using Budget. Would not recommend.

Reserved a luxury SUV (Audi Q5 or equivalent was stated). When I arrived I was given the choice of only two SUV’s, both Ford Expedition Max. The vehicle is the biggest SUV Ford makes…6000lbs, 7 passenger and 20’ long. Not a luxury SUV and a gas guzzler averaging 13 mpg. You need a step ladder to climb into the vehicle. Was not a pleasant experience trying to drive and park that thing around Charleston SC.

our rental car could not be given to us because the car that we returned in Atlanta the day before had not been registered as returned. We had to make a new rental under different name. Luckily Isaac Mattern the manager helped us with the process. The Atlanta Alamo managers were incompetent.

Hertz did not have the car we reserved. We were forced to take a smaller car which was unsafe given the number of passengers and the luggage. Hertz did not offer any other options. I would not rent from Hertz again. I have heard many similar stories about the company. It used to be good but no longer.

Cons:

When I picked up my car the check engine light came on, so they swapped my car out. When they did, they put in the wrong drop-off point (wrong state!), so when I called to change it back to the original drop-off, they said there was nothing they could do. I wasted half my afternoon on the phone with people that “couldn’t help”.

Waited in line for an hour. Only one person working behind the counter until 15 min before my turn. I did not ask for a giant Dodge Ram truck. I signed up for an economy size car. Was told I had the Managers Special. BS. Parking lot very poorly marked it was difficult to get to where the vehicle was, it was too far. Signage unclear as to where to leave the vehicle.

I had to wait an hour for a car to be available. Then it was a huge car when I had reserved a small one. Gas price was double what I would have paid. No attendant at the return with only a very small sign to tell you where to go with keys.

The reservation was there. The drop off after-hours was simple.

Cons:

The vehicle I reserved was not available and I was given a much larger vehicle (pick-up truck). I waited in line for 30 minutes with only two people in front of me. It took the representative 10-15 minutes per customer. I was not able to do submit the walk-around information because the agent did not answer the phone.

I really enjoy using Priceline, but certainly hope I NEVER have to use Thrifty again. Had to wait in line for over an hour waiting to return the keys. Had to wait an hour to pick up the car the previous day.

Cons:

There needs to be faster service at the check in and check out at the Charleston Airport location. There was one person behind the counter with about 10 guest in line. No other car rental dealer had that many and they did not take that long to process the customer. Need to have more employees and a faster process especially when the customer has a reservation already. The employer behind the desk was working as fast as she could but she needed help!

The manager wasted time with two other customers and we could hear all of their conversation. Very unpleasant for us while waiting. When it was our turn, she insisted there was a block on my debit card which I checked before making the trip which was okay for the rental company to use. She said if we didn't want the car we could go to another car rental. We produced another card and suddenly it was okay and cost us extra. I checked with my bank the next morning and said there was not any block on my card. This lasted with her for a half hour. Very unprofessional for a manager as she stated she was. Makes me think twice about wanting to rent again from them.

They could have had a car available for us. We just put in a 14 hour day of travel. We are sorry we have no cars available, just does not cut it. We will not rent a car from Dollar/Thrifty again. Unreliable.

Employees did not go out of their way to do anything. They did their job. At times I felt a nuisance to them. It was quite inconvenient that the rental place was not at the airport or did not provide a shuttle.

Unfortunately, we have to wait more than an hour to get a car, in a cabin without air conditioning with very unfriendly staff. When we finally got the car, it was very dirty. in addition, we received a car that was non-evaporative. The left rear tire was deflating and I had to fill it every day. when I called the office, they told me that they don't have a car available at the moment and that if I want another car, I should come to them and wait until someone returns the rental car. The least I expected was for them to apologize and bring me another car to the hotel where I was staying. Very bad experience.

I booked a car and I never got a car. I got the phone number to call to be picked up from the airport from the airport info booth. Ace did not say you needed to call for a shuttle. I called several times and the calls did not go through, or got dropped after a while, or went to a message that said the mailbox is full. The one time I got a person they put me on hold, and then the call dropped. I've had delays at Ace but never total failure before. I recommend that Expedia stop offering Ace. offering vendors that don't deliver means that people are buying stuff from Expedia that is never delivered, and makes Expedia just as bad as the failed vendor.

My experience with Ace was horrible. I reserved a car and went to pick it up. I arrived at the storefront and a worker comes barging out of the store. Raising her voice asking if I was picking up or dropping off. i told her picking up and immediately her demeanor changed and she just states that they don’t have any cars left and I tried to tell her that I had a car reserved for over a week at that point. She barely let me finish and said they were “overbooked” (idk how you do that when there is a couple hour grace period to pick up the car). She then went back inside without another word. I was was left without any help in acquiring a new car and was not able to get a rental car for the time that I needed it.

They were out of cars. As a result, they stopped running a shuttle to the airport. There was no communication about that whatsoever so I waited in traffic for a shuttle to show up which never came and I had to call after 45 minutes to an hour to be told that they had no rental cars available, and that I was out of luck . The whole thing sucked

Easy online selection. The car I requested was actually there (unlike other brands on past). The car seats for the kids were ok. A high back booster option would be nice to have for young kids who are bigger than a toddler seat and too small for just a simple booster. Rental price for kids seats is too much for the value. Those booster seats are old and can be bought for 20$ at Walmart, which I will do instead next time. Slow counter service and the line to leave the garage took almost 10 mins. Overall, good value and nice clean vehicle.

Everything was easy and as-planned. The only thing that wasn’t great was that I didn’t have obvious instructions for the drop off procedure for the small airport I was dropping off the car at. I wish Avis would have sent me instructions for the drop off at my specific location.

We received an upgrade car from the one we reserved. Drop off at ATL airport rental car center was quick and convenient.

Cons:

Pickup at CHS was a little slow. Car had a strong smoker smell, but we didn’t want to delay our trip any further by going back to ask for another one.
