Pros: Nothing. Never got to rent the car.
Cons: No one at the airport was able to help us get to national. Ended up talking to a Hertz representative and get a better price.review from
Pros: Staff service was great. Rental and dropoff was easy.
Cons: Cars are a little worn out and need some cleaning.review from
Pros: The staff was amazing. It was very easy to pick up and drop off
Cons: I was quoted 22 dollars a day. I ended up paying more than double that. I didn’t even pay for the insurance and I still payed more than double. It would be nice if the quote told you about fees instead of misleading you to think you’re getting a great deal.review from
Cons: Our flight was delayed and they cancelled our reservation. Agent at the counter offered an alternative with another company (something nded like something under the table) for five times the cost of my original reservation. In the end we were left without a car.review from
Perfect and easy
Pros: Even though I reluctantly paid for the extra insurance despite having coverage through the credit card, the whole experience was easy and pleasant and I can't really complain. Everyone we dealt with was exceptional.review from
Get ready for hidden fees
Pros: Easy shuttle to the car rental. Good car
Cons: You are forced into hidden fees. The rental price does not include mandatory insurance. Expect to pay 4x what you book. Checking the car back in was also a little bit of a mess.review from
Ran out of car seats
Pros: Price looked good online
Cons: We arrived early in the morning only to find they were new car seats. What do you do in a foreign country with a two and four-year-old without a car seat? This place sucks.review from
Dishonest Staff National
Pros: nothing positive
Cons: 1. I reserved, via Kayak.com, an “intermediate SUV or similar” for six (6) days in Cancun, Mexico for $110.08. the reservation said that it included “all taxes and fee”. 2. When I arrive I was told I had to purchase 3rd party insurance for 50 dollar a day. When I questioned the teller I determined that the legal minimum was really $26.00 per day (6*26+ 18% tax=$184.08. This more than doubled by initial reservation price. My new expected total is $294.08, wait it gets better. 3. The first SUV they checked out did not have a working seat beat. The second car they tried to put us in would not start at all. Finally the 3rd vehicle, a minivan, had working seatbelts and would start. The AC was struggling but we had to get going so we accepted it. I took pictures of the first two vehicles but by the 3rd van I was tired and forgot to take picture with my phone for later reference/proof; this will be important later. This process took 2 hours to pickup our “SUV”. This wasted daylight as I had to drive 5 hours to Merida that afternoon. 4. For Six (6) days the van was mediocre adequate for our needs. 5. I return the vehicle with a full tank of gas; I take a video of the exterior and Interior. The attendant filled out the damage assessment as “all good” but missing the front license plate. He stated that it was a $50 US dollar charge. I didn’t have picture showing the plate there or not; so I signed the report stating such. I was willing to eat a 50 dollar charge. 6. I was not given a copy of the report showing “no damage” 7. I was not given a final bill. 8. They said that everything was fine and I would receive an email with the bill later. I never did. 9. My credit card was billed $606.08 vs Kayak reservation price of $110.08. 10. I am currently working with my credit card, Discover, who are doing an awesome job disputing this fraudulent bill. I also called National US customer service and was able to determine the extra charge was from a $300 (5000 Pesos) charge due to "damage". Remember I was told everything was good, no damage. Right dishonest staff. My advice is to search online to read the reviews prior to renting in Cancun. National is one of the worst. Taxis and Uber appear to be the way to go to avoid the bait and switch.review from
Know about renting in mexico
Pros: National was great! The sales rep was really nice and honest which is rare for a car rental place.
Cons: Realize in Mexico you have to get insurance which adds to your rate. Actually US insurance companies often don't cover cars in Mexico so it's best to get full coverage. Adds like 30 per day.review from
All good, except for dropoff
Pros: Pickup was efficient, car was great.
Cons: Delay at dropoff because they couldn't find my credit card. It took awhile but the staff person was helpful.review from
BRING PROOF OF THIRD PARTY LIABILITY COVERAGE
Pros: Staff was friendly.
Cons: You must bring proof of third party liability coverage if you do not wish to purchase any insurance. Our 9 day rental was to cost US$46.18 through priceline. Since we did not bring proof of third party liability, we paid over US$280. This should be listed under 'important information' in the booking itinerary. Not cool.review from
Cancelled my reservation
Cons: I arrived later than the time that I had booked the car for and they had given it away and had no alternatives. I had to go elsewhere and pay a lot more. My fault maybe, but they should be clearer about the policy.review from
Waited 2 hours for shuttle and paid 50% more than
Pros: Car was clean, and drop off was easy.
Cons: Waited 2 hours at the Cancun airport for the National Shuttle to arrive. Guy kept saying it should be here any minute. We could have walked there and back 10 times if he would have told us where it was. When we finally got to the rental car office, they told us our quote did not include insurance that was mandatory. Even though all other rental car companies did include this in their quote. Then, tried to give us a lower level car than what we booked for the same price. I was at least able to pull up the confirmation email to show the car level I had booked. After all of this, we ended up losing 4 hours of our vacation and paying 50% more that expected. Totally going with Hertz next time. Saw shuttles every 5 minutes, and quoted us a lower price at the airport and assured it was with the mandatory insurance.review from
Cons: not specific to National but all the hidden "liability" clauses are a pain.review from
Mexican insurance laws!
Pros: I booked for $4 usd a day, after mandatory liability insurance and the imposed 16% and 18% taxes, the car was close to 400 for 6 days!!!!!!!review from
Pros: Was delayed 2 hours - until 1:00am and had to go to another agency. Will never rent from enterprise again.review from
Online price did not give any indication of actual
Pros: Car was decent for purpose and clean.
Cons: Online price was quoted as 8/day for $40 total rental (seems too cheap, right?). Actual price was over $270 with required insurances. I was not surprised that I had to pay for some insurance but the increase was ridiculous and no indication was given when reserving online (and it was confusingly explained when I got there). Would not rent from them again and probably would not reserve through Kayak.review from
Deceiving total cost
Pros: Automatic car with USB drives to charge smartphones
Cons: The initially quoted price from Kayak was wrong and completely deceiving. The original kayak price was $196.77 vs. $520.19 total National cost with insurance. Kayak needs to better define the total cost to prevent the unexpected surprise especially when on vacation!review from
Cons: What Kayak and National fail to tell you is that there is a $20/day mandatory insurance charge. That turns the advertised rate from $5/day to $25/day.review from
Car wasn't available and lot wasn't in the termina
Cons: We made reservations early in the morning to pick up the car in the evening. When we arrived, we were told that they didn't know if there was a car available or how much it would cost, regardless of what we had reserved online, because they wouldn't honor any reservations not made at least 48 hours in advance. Furthermore, the person at the counter couldn't tell us there were even any cars available or call the lot to find out. So, the solution we were given was to take the shuttle to the lot to find out if there was a car available and what we would be charged. Fortunately, there were numerous other competitors' counters in the terminal that were able to tell us if they had cars to rent and what they would charge us and we ended up renting from Dollar instead.review from
