10.0 Excellent
Pros: We loved that hotel; it was the best of our trip in Japan. Beautiful hotel and very cosy with WOODBURNERS in lounge area and dining area. It was very nice to relax and read a book near the fire. Food is fantastic. Price for dinner may seem high but it is very good value as there are several courses of very nice food. Breakfast was also excellent.
Cons: Nothing we did not like.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great ambience and feel. Food was amazing!
Cons: Perhaps a yukata would be great considering the shared facilities and walk around. I note it’s not a traditional Japanese inn.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The Onsen was great, the property is amazing, the breakfast delicious
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Such a beautiful, small hotel in a stunning location. After a long day of exploring the local area, we hunkered down with a glass of red wine in front of the log burner and enjoyed the cosy atmosphere of the hotel before tucking in to the most sensational meal. With an Italian theme, the food was absolutely delicious and a real treat, not to mention exceptional value. We were sorry to have only booked one night here and would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking to stay in the area. We will be back!
Cons: There was nothing we didn't like
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely relaxing little hide away in the hills of Takayama. The hotel is beautifully decorated, very peaceful and comfortable. We really enjoyed relaxing here in front of the fire before dinner. The staff are incredibly friendly and always willing to drive you into town, though the walk itself is quite nice. Dinner is very special and highly recommend you have this at least once on your trip.
Cons: I would personally prefer a choice for breakfast. It was a 2 course set breakfast - the food was delicious but after dinner the night before I was too full to really appreciate it and could have made do with something simpler.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Our stay at Auberge Hidanomori was faultless. The shuttle service made the location secluded but accessible, they have incredible English skills, the food was sensational, and the furnishings were a delight. Wholeheartedly recommended.
Cons: Nothing. I can't complain about anything. My wife said the bed was a little firm.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Everything about my stay was wonderful. The hotel itself is clean and fresh, and feels as if it is nestled into the hillside. The natural building elements make the inside feel peaceful and welcoming. The staff is warm and friendly - beyond the usual Japanese hospitality - they make you feel as if you’ve come home. And the food! Both dinner and breakfast were exquisite - quite possibly the beat meals I’ve ever eaten. I was sorry to leave after one night.
Cons: I live in Japan and plan to return. However, despite how wonderful absolutely everything is, it will be hard to convince my husband to share a bathroom with other guests. The bathrooms are very clean and well looked after (as with everything), so perhaps he’ll agree after all!
9.0 Excellent
Pros: It was a positive experience for us. The people are so nice, they offer excellent service. The hotel is so so clean. The food they offered and serve is excellent. The breakfast and dinner exceeded our expectations The owner is a chef and he serves amazing International meals. We ate breakfast and dinner there both days we stayed. That is how good it was. The fact that we didn't have a private bathroom wasn't a big deal because it was so clean that we felt comfortable. Location was perfect because they offer free transportation. They drove us and picked us up as we asked. Excellent service and excellent positive attitude at all times.
Cons: The mattress was a little bit too hard but otherwise a perfect stay.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This place was sensational - beautifully designed, great rooms, immaculately clean, friendly staff, amazing food - could not recommend more highly.
Cons: Nothing - it was perfect
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The dinner was absolutely fantastic. If you stay here, you Must reserve for dinner. Incredible!

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The ryokan is easy to get to from the train station. The staff are very kind and helpful. Our room was very clean and spacious.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: We had incredibly warm welcome to this very tradition ryokan. Our dinner and breakfast were excellent and as a bonus there is an Ibsen.
Cons: Sleeping on a futon was not so comfortable for us... but we felt this did add to our overall experience.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly staff, a very cozy and well-maintained traditional Japanese house. Super clean room and just few- minute walk from Takayama train station. The stadd even helped us book a dinner at a restaurant outside!
Cons: Nothing!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: From the time we arrived, we were given an authentic Japanese welcome and overall experience ! Our room had tatami matting with floor mattresses - firm but good enough for sleeping. We were encouraged to wear kimonos each day for breakfast or dinner ( if ordered) The food was amazing - very tasty, attention to detail, different, works of art !! The staff were so friendly, helpful, humble .... couldn’t sing their praises enough! This is such a wonderful place to stay in Takayama and one that will leave you with beautiful memories!!
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Ryokan Asunaro provided a lovely experience in their beautifully kept and authentic rooms. The staff and service were absolutely impeccable. The ability to wear a Yukata throughout the stay was great. Traditional Japanese breakfast was also very delicious.
Cons: Though I should have researched earlier, there was no ability to use the onsen privately or as a couple.

Pros: Great food! Excellent stuff!!
Cons: We loved everything
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The kaiseki meals are beautifully presented and delicious. The Onsen are beautiful, and very well provisioned. Our host took us out into the countryside at night to watch fireflies which was a great experience.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Gorgeous traditional Ryokan. Superb food and amenities. Wonderful staff. Great Onsens. Enchanting.
Cons: Nothing. Even loved getting lost in the corridors.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was terrific
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast is incredible delicious, they can even make them different if you stay for multiple days.
Cons: It's really hard to get to Hidatakayama, but if you stay there, I recommend staying there for multiple days. And the price is pretty expensive though.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The staff were so warm and friendly, even before we arrived they were in touch to ensure we had a wonderful stay. As it was our honeymoon they gave us a lovely gift and even took our photo and had it printed as a special momento of our stay. We enjoyed dinner at the property one evening and it was amazing! So many wonderful dishes! Breakfast was also spectacular!
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The outdoor Onsen was wonderful and pretty, with a hot tub probably 10 degrees hotter then the pool. They had shots of Sake available outside in case you got too cold??? The room was large...we had to ask for a double futon. All together the ryokan is in a sleepy little town....nothing to do there but enjoy the spa.
Cons: The dinner was perhaps too Japanese for our Western palates...portions were tiny and most of the dishes were simply not to our taste. This was not our first dining experience in Japan...so we were very disappointed especially since the ratings were so high. We had much better fare in other ryokan accommodations that were far less expensive.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Best Japanese living experience. True Japanese inn. Staff was very helpful food was excellent. Loved the Onsen
Cons: Wish they had a lower temperature Onsen too
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Really reasonable price considering breakfast and dinner included. Relaxing experience, zen like atmosphere and you can get a great experience for 1/3 the price of others
Cons: Nothing really, ryokans are expensive so wouldn’t recommend more than one night!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Their staffs are very nice and good English. Dinner and breakfast are delicious.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great ryokan experience at very very good price. Nice onsen, welcoming and homely atmosphere, comfortable futons, absolutely delicious dinner and breakfast. The dinner consisted of several courses, we were so full but had to try everything. Meals seemed to be japanese with some western twist. The location on a little hill above the town offers nice view. Although it was OK to walk from the station for us (it is actually pleasant walk through the interesting parts of the town which we enjoyed), you dont need to walk since there is free shuttle to and from the station. The location is in walking distance to all the sights and interesting places. Everything was just perfect!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Food was extremely good (although slightly westernized compared to other ryokan). Location is great. Free shuttle to and from the train station was very helpful.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Both breakfast and dinner were awesome (and so much food)! The staff was very accommodating and spoke great English, and the futons were very comfortable
Cons: It is a bit of a hike from the train station, but they offer shuttles and it's still within walking distance to Sanmachi-suji!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It's a really old style Japanese hotel but with all facilities. It has shared onsen big enough and clean. The food is perfect to taste a little bit of Japan.
Cons: Check out time it's a little early. Shuttle service from hotel to train station only works until 10:10 AM
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Everything was great - food, baths, room. Great value for the price. Location is not too far from the center, just 5-10 mins walk.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything in this place was a wonderful experience!

10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was our first stay in a traditional Japanese ryokan. The hosts were super friendly and welcoming. The interior of the hotel was really atmospheric with lots of antiques and knick-knacks everywhere. We had breakfast and dinner served in our room - the food was amazing, probably the best we had on our 2 week visit to Japan. The hostess/owner was great - a real character with a great sense of humour!
Cons: No complaints really - it was quite expensive, but worth it for the experience of staying in a ryokan, and for all the amazing food. We felt slightly awkward at the meal/bed changeover times, being in the room while someone packed away/made up the beds!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: This was my most unique stay in a hotel ever. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. The ryokan itself was pretty much what you would expect - beautiful traditional Japanese style and very comfortable. The dinner and breakfast meals were big and tasty. Overall a fantastic experience.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was perfect.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Gorgeous old building. Felt like we were staying in a piece of history, artwork and antiques in the room and corridors, fabulous food for dinner and breakfast, lovely host. Large hot bath that could be used privately for free
9.6 Excellent
Pros: It was very unique to have the opportunity to stay in an antique home. The bathrooms and onsen were modern and very clean. The room overlooked the river and had a nice seating area in addition to the tatami mats for sleeping and eating. The Japanese breakfast was huge and intricate. It was a great and unique experience. Highly recommend a stay here.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was the most amazing authentic experience we had in our entire Japan trip, and I can’t recommend it highly enough! If you’re going to Takayama, you should absolutely stay here. The ryokan is run by the most adorable and hospitable couple, who attended to our every need. The ryokan itself is clearly traditional and authentic, from the artwork to the paper screen walls and doors. We had unbelievable breakfast, which were probably the best meals we had all trip, and they were able to cater to vegetarians. We had a gorgeous garden with fall foliage right outside our room that we could enjoy with the paper doors open and the exterior sliding glass doors closed. The private Onsen was so delightful, we used it four times in two days. Great location in the heart of Takayama’s historical center. Truly, do yourself a favor and spend a few nights here for the full Japanese experience.
Cons: Nothing! It was perfect.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: This place was wonderful! The hosts were so attentive and caring. The location was ideal and the accommodations were just what we were expecting. The traditional breakfast and dinner were both delicious (we had two breakfasts and one dinner) and eating in a tatami room was fun. Loved this spot!
Cons: When we came back to our room after it was changed, it smelled of cigarette smoke. Not sure where it came from but once we opened the windows it would air out.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Every single detail is perfect, the food is out of this world and the room couldn't be better, you have your own private onsen. It is the best experience we've ever had in our lives.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The atmosphere, extremely friendly staff, the privacy, the outdoor Onsen, the food, the rooms. We had an amazing and fabulous time. The food was beyond our expectations. So quiet and still to really have the opportunity to relax.
Cons: It would be worthwhile to cut down on all the plastic used for so many bathroom items and socks. That is all.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: It isn't to find a good ryokan onsen at a not unreasonable place. This is just such a place. The service is outstanding--ultra attentive and courteous. The food is beyond extraordinary. The in room onsens are lovely. Of course, the rooms themselves are somewhat sparse, but that is as at should be. The setting is beautiful. Again, the food is really something special for those seeking to experience rustic Japanese cuisine. Meals like the ones you'll enjoy here would run to several hundred dollars per person in Tokyo or Kyoto, and the experience wouldn't be the same as it is here.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was a bit too much for us however to be fair this was kind of expected
Cons: The entire experience and dinner

Pros: Location is great, very close to JR. Nice hotel with very friendly staff.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Everything else. Breakfast was great, service was excellent, good waiting area and refreshments. Even the hotel shop is amazing, we bought many things while on our way out for dinner. There is a small fridge and iron, and coffee machine in the room we were in. Very convenient and thoughtful, though we did not try on the beautiful yukata offered to us. En-suite shower and toilet is available, which again, is fantastic.
Cons: There were a few stains on the bedding we were given.
10.0 Excellent

Cons: Nothing
8.8 Excellent
Pros: We loved the notes, origami and yhe gift they gave us upon check out
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were so friendly and helpful, they try and assist with all of your needs. The place was also just a short 2-3 minute walk from the Takayama station. The public onsen was very nice and there is a little semi-outdoor area too.
Cons: It would be good if the private onsen (which is actually just hot water) did not cost money to reserve.

Cons: Nothing

10.0 Excellent
Pros: I loved every minute of my stay in Takayama at this hotel. It was an experience I will never forget, and I hope to be back someday!
Cons: Everything was perfect.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Their service was impeccable. Owner of the ryokan even came out to help us with the luggage herself, and waved us goodbye out in the street, under the rain. Room was spacious and “modern” considering it is a ryokan >20 years. Lights and atmosphere inside the room is bright and welcoming (unlike some of the older ryokans I have stayed in). There was a little massage chair + “hot spring bath tub” in our room, which is a welcoming plus. Breakfast and dinner was exquisite with a variety of delicate delicious traditional Japanese food. The hotel provides traditional Japanese gowns/nightgowns which you can wear to dinner and the onsen. If you want to experience Japanese culture, staying in a ryokan is a must. Hiranoya Kachoan combines traditional Japanese services with modern room facilities.
Cons: Room temperature was rather warm through out the hotel. We brought long sleeves so felt too hot. Couldn’t find a way to lower the temperature in the room.
7.0 Good
Pros: Very nice staff! Great breakfast. Good but not great location.
Cons: The architecture and decor were not in keeping with the aesthetic of the beautiful old houses of Takayama. The place, inside and out, looked like it was created by a somewhat tacky design team in 1964. So the aesthetic vibe was both dated and less than ideal in taste. When I pay $500 plus for a ryokan and food, I expect a higher standard of decor and food than we got. An aesthetic disappointment overall, and not good value for money.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The attention to detail, in terms of comfort and friendliness of staff. A beautiful place to stay and relax. The food was excellent!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was fantastic. The staff was very friendly. Hotel is located on the center of the town, closing to red brigde and morning market.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Incredible service. Pick up and drop off from the station. Amazing facilities in the public bath as well as in the room. Amazing food. What an incredible experience overall. Wish we had spent more time there, one night was not enough!
9.0 Excellent
Pros: the location is perfect. the staff were very friendly and joyful.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Service is excellent and food quality is good

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Almost everything:)
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We liked everything about it, from the warm welcome to the private onsen and spectacular diner experience. Even sleeping on a futon ended up being comfortable. It was by far our best accommodation in Japan and I would recommend anyone to go for it.
Cons: Everything was perfect
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location is wonderful. A bit of a distance to Takayama but well worth spending time here. Location ideal for exploring the Northern Japanese Alps. Exceptional host and team. The hot baths (onsens) were exceptionally comfortable and well maintained. The breakfasts were great but note that the dinners can be a bit excessive quantity-wise. Both are exquisitely well-cooked though.
Cons: Everything was perfect.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This little onsen ryokan is run by the Takizawa family, who have lived in the area for about 40 years. Breakfasts and dinners were sumptuous and delicious and the rooms were clean and spacious. The two outdoor onsens were spectacular during the fall when I was there, and there are two indoor ones as well. All in all, a very quintessential Japanese experience. I went there aiming to chill and soak, and I had a great time. The only downside is that it is rather inaccessible for some and if you don’t drive, you are at the mercy of the public buses which run every hour — which is not too bad. I saw some people use it as a base to visit Kamikochi and other places in the Okuhida area.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: There is not one thing we did not enjoy about our stay here. From the beautiful room with mountain views and friendly service to the most incredible vegetarian food we have eaten, it was all perfect. The onsens within the property are lovely as well as the public bath by the river which was amazing. There are plenty of hikes around- at the end of the street you can start the Mt Yake Dake hike which we loved. As vegetarians we were very well catered for, for both breakfast and dinner. We will definitely be back.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing staff and hospitality, food was also great!
Cons: Our stay was perfect. Thanks so much!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: This ryokan was a highlight of our trip to Japan. The rooms are large, comfortable, and cozy. There are 4 onsen baths (2 inside and 2 outside) and you can use any of the baths with others in your party. Unlike some onsens they are not segregated by gender, they are all private. The onsens are warm but not too hot (42-44C), especially the outside ones, which are beautiful. We had both dinner and breakfast - the meals were amazing and I highly recommend doing both. The staff were lovely and helpful, they helped us figure out the buses back to Takayama and (when they saw us looking sleepy waiting for our bus) kindly brought us coffee. I cannot recommend this ryokan highly enough.
Cons: This ryokan is in a remote area - so it takes some time to get to (about 1.5-2 hours by bus outside of Takayama), but thats part of the charm. The bus doesn't always go to the bus stop by the ryokan; you need to tell the driver where you are going when you get on.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Private onsen The breakfast and dinner Beautiful rooms/hotel Staff and owner
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was absolutely fantastic: location, room, private (indoor and outdoor) onsen, hosts. The meals (dinner and breakfast) were easily the best food I had while in Japan, and that's saying a lot, as the food in this country rocks. Will come again!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The place is amazing! The scenery, the beautiful outdoors private onsens and the delicious meals (both breakfast & dinner). The staff were all very helpful and nice, and the price was more than fair...
Cons: Everything was perfect.

Pros: Tai was a phenomenal host, he went above and beyond in helping us have the best time in Takayama: – Picked us up right from the bus station – Gave us excellent recommendations of things to do + where to eat in Takayama – Very accommodating as a host SOY itself was magical – the space is impeccably decorated and cozy. The breakfast they served was delicious. We're hitting ourselves for not staying longer.
Cons: Nothing – it was a perfect stay.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The wonderful feeling of being home, with familly
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We arrived around 4pm in the afternoon to be greeted by a warm wood stove fire in a structure that was cozy and had a lovely farmhouse feel to it. We were treated to tea and a homemade brownie and sat by the fire to rest after our 4 hour train ride from Wakayama. We asked Tai (when he met us at the train station) if we could order dinner at Soy for that evening since we arrived late in the afternoon and didn't want to venture out back into town again. Everything is homemade and presented like a fancy kaiseki meal. We enjoyed the delicious local seasonal dishes on handmade pottery. You can feel the attention and care the family and staff put forth in making your stay as comfortable as possible, We stayed two nights and were given maps and advice on how to best make our limited time in Takayama. The location is about 10 min away from Takayama Station but Tai coordinates with the other guests to give everyone a ride into town in the morning. (We called ahead and let him know what time our train would arrive at the station) Shops tend to shut down around 5 - 6pm when we were there in November and restaurants a little later. We never felt the location was a disadvantage at all. We would definitely stay at Soy again. Thank you to Tai and family and staff for making our trip to Takayama so memorable! We'll be back!
Cons: I can't think of anything but positives at Soy. One thing to note is that you and your party will share your own private shower room and a toilet in a separate room. No one else uses it except those in your party. Its not in your room but just a few steps away from your room. It worked out nicely.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Tai & his family provided my sons and I with a delightful experience. The room was spacious, comfortable and very clean. Our room had the use of a separate bathroom and an upstairs lounge. It is a place that is inviting, has amazingly good food for breakfast, and the nicest hosts you could meet. As the guest house is a short trip out of the centre of town, Tai generously provides a shuttle service. His knowledge of the town and the attractions /restaurants is very good and with his help we were able to experience many delicious meals. If you have the chance to stay, I doubt you would be disappointed.
Cons: There is nothing that can usefully be said here. My stay was great.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The owner offered to take us to the restaurant in town and arranged the dinner for us. This place is a family-run business and I'm very impressed with their hospitality.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: As with all the reviews this place is amazing. Do not hesitate to book. Do not look elsewhere. I only hope you are staying longer than a night like we were. The house looks like the photos but even more stunning. They house is owned and occupied by the family with guest rooms spread over 2 floors. The architecture is beautiful and the details beautiful. Sitting by the fire in the evening with a glass / bottle of sake is the way to relax. Tai is amazing. He collects you from the station. If early will take your bags and drop you in town to have fun. He is a personal chauffeur in that he will drop and collect you from town when needed. His recommendation on where to eat dinner was spot on. On the way to the bus station when we were leaving he drove us up to a lookout to see the snow covered mountains and also queued at the bus stop to make sure we got the right tickets. His parents are amazing. His mum cooks the breakfast - get the Japanese breakfast - you will not be dissapoiented.
Cons: That we only had 1 night.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was just wonderful! The house is beautiful with a spacious living room with fireplace and view to beautiful garden. The room in japanese style was very cozy, very good mattress. Tai - owner of the guesthouse is so nice and kind, he helped us to plan our trip to Kamikochi in detail, he even helped us to buy bus tickets at the station and dropped us to the station in the morning. The breakfast is delicious with either a western style option or japanese option. The house is around 10 min drive from the train station in Takayama, but Tai is providing transport if you want to drop your luggage and stay in the city. As I said, it was our best stay in Japan and would definitely return in case we are in Japan again.
Cons: Nothing.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff was absolutely incredible and generous. I have never felt more welcomed or experienced more hospitality than I did with Tai and his family. Between offers to drive us into and pick us up from the town center, to making restaurant recommendations and reservations, to offers of tea or sake in the evenings, Tai and his family go above and beyond to make your stay a great one. Also, absolutely delicious breakfast and a wonderful cafe area to eat in.

Pros: Everything is perfect here. The natural setting, the impeccable service, the warm and friendly staff, the wonderful meals, all satisfied me to a great extent. I felt upset to leave. Just want to keep it to myself, will not share with others. One of the best roykans in Japan!
Cons: Not any.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: One of the best Ryokans in Japan, and one of the top we did in our 3 weeks Japan tour. If you want to experience luxury in a remote place, with dedicated staff and strong service, great traditional food, excellent onsen, large rooms, incredible view on the river from the room, this is the place. I can still feel the atmosphere of this place, with fireplace and smoke, a gem hdden in the mountains. If you can, go for it!

6.0 Good
Pros: Great location, near to the bus station and city centre. It was raining and the hotel provided us with free umbrella's.
Cons: Pillows were quite hard, but we received an extra one! This is not the hotel's fault, but we heard our neighbours' alarm going of at 6, at 6:15, and 6:30. So we were quite awake. But the neighbour just let it ring... we called the reception desk for advice, but we didn't speak enough Japanese to properly inform them of this issue.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The onsen was good. The room and all facilities were very clean. There was a good breakfast buffet selection. The hotel is close to the train and bus stations.
Cons: The room was a bit small, particularly the bathroom, however, this is not unusual in Japan. The room was also overly warm, even though it was cold outside. We had to open the window to cool down.
