Auberge Hidanomori - Takayama - Building
1
9.5 Excellent (623 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Auberge Hidanomori in Takayama, you'll be in the suburbs, within a 5-minute drive of Takayama Jinya and Hida Minzoku Mura Folk Village. The front desk is staffed during limited hours. A train station pick-up service is provided at no charge, and free self parking is available onsite.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: As soon as you enter - the atmosphere is very peaceful and relaxing. The communal spaces are in a modern Japanese style and very spacious which was a nice change of pace. The bathrooms are shared but they are very nicely done and we never had to wait. There is a large jacuzzi bath which is a nice touch. The hosts are very kind and welcoming. They offer a shuttle service into Takayama centre which is very flexible - and this means the slightly remote location is not a problem at all. The food is definitely a highlight though - breakfast was absolutely divine and the dinner was really special. Beautifully prepared and presented Italian food - highly recommend! Overall - one of our favourite stays in japan and would definitely return.
Cons: The rooms are fairly basic but this is made up for by the communal spaces.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Tranquil and relaxing, the staff was very attentive and the food was out of this world. We enjoyed our time relaxing there in between sightseeing, it was our favorite place to stay out of our whole trip. We would come back in a heartbeat. Originally we weren’t going to eat dinner because we wanted Japanese food instead of Italian but after having the breakfast we quickly changed our minds and did not regret it. The dinner was phenomenal, don’t miss it!
Cons: The location wasn’t an easy walking distance to town (approximately an hour) but they provided a free shuttle drop off and pickup to the train station downtown whenever we wanted which was very convenient and awesome.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: An hotel more in line with Japan than the West. But delightful and restful. Not a box with a bed. Interesting bathing facilities. Food exquisite
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything. Fantastic food, people, cleanliness, hospitality and I gave the location a 10/10 because although it is out of town (which is much more peaceful), the hosts are very generous with driving you to and from town whenever required making it incredibly easy.
Cons: If anything, the loos are not in the room, but that is part of the experience of staying at certain traditional Japanese guesthouses.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The staff is great, food fantastic (the pasta was my favourite), the room was big and comfortable and the entire place is simply beautiful... The staff are always willing to help you and they can drive you to and fromthe train station to the hotel!!
Cons: Showers and toilets are shared and it is far away from everything.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The best meal(s) I have had in a very long time! Everything on the plate was perfectly executed and super delicious! I also highly recommend taking a beautiful walk on the trail nearby before breakfast.
Cons: Nothing
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great staff, great rooms and great food. The location (5 km from Takayama station) was alarming at first, but the staff and service are so amazing, they simply pick you up and get you back to the hotel/city center on demand. The hotel itself is in a very peaceful place, which makes the atmosphere super elegant and relaxing (and that’s what we looked for after a day of traveling the mountains or the old town). Everything is clean and well planned to the smallest detail. Simply a great place I would highly recommend to anyone arriving to Takayama.
Cons: The dinner was a bit too expensive (yet wonderful), but everything else was simply amazing m.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The house is beautifully renovated, very cozy and the staff is this amazing family who takes very good care of its gasts! The shuttle works very smooth, you call and there are there in 15 minutes to pick you up. We stayed here three nights and used it as a base to go to Kamikochi, Takayama and Shirakawa-go. The breakfast is the best I have had, feels like you went to a fancy brunch place. Also don’t miss out on the dinner! Clean bathroom with a hottub which we enjoyed in the evenings
Cons: That we had to leave
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Our stay was fabulous. Our hosts could not have been more welcoming. We had dinner and it was sensational as was breakfast. The area is simply beautiful as well. Thoroughly enjoyed the brief stay.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A very clean and tidy place with a beautiful smell of timber. While the place is slightly out of town, the staff will deliver and pick up their guests from the station. Excellent.
Cons: Slightly out of town
Yatsusankan - Takayama - Building
2
9.4 Excellent (432 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Yatsusankan in Hida, you'll be within a 15-minute drive of Takayama Jinya and Shirakabe Dozogai. The front desk is staffed during limited hours. Guests may use a train station pick-up service for a surcharge, and free self parking is available onsite.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The room was great, staffs were amazingly friendly & helpful. Location was perfect with a great view from my room facing the river view.
Cons: Nothing. It was perfect.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It's difficult to start on what was it that we enjoyed the most, because we had a wonderful stay at Yatsusankan. The staff were kind and helpful, the baths are lovely and breakfast and dinner was delicious (we only had dinner there one day as we were expecting to arrive later on the first day, but it's an experience we won't forget! Breakfast was also abundant both in flavor and quantity). We were on our honeymoon and it was, by far, the most relaxing experience we had on our journey through Japan. Wish we had had more days to stay there. Hida Furukawa is also a lovely town, and Hida Takayama is only 15 min. away by train. Couldn't recommend it enough, thank you so much for everything.
Cons: Nothing!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Gorgeous traditional Ryokan. Superb food and amenities. Wonderful staff. Great Onsens. Enchanting.
Cons: Nothing. Even loved getting lost in the corridors.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The kaiseki meals are beautifully presented and delicious. The Onsen are beautiful, and very well provisioned. Our host took us out into the countryside at night to watch fireflies which was a great experience.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The outdoor Onsen was wonderful and pretty, with a hot tub probably 10 degrees hotter then the pool. They had shots of Sake available outside in case you got too cold??? The room was large...we had to ask for a double futon. All together the ryokan is in a sleepy little town....nothing to do there but enjoy the spa.
Cons: The dinner was perhaps too Japanese for our Western palates...portions were tiny and most of the dishes were simply not to our taste. This was not our first dining experience in Japan...so we were very disappointed especially since the ratings were so high. We had much better fare in other ryokan accommodations that were far less expensive.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The staff were so warm and friendly, even before we arrived they were in touch to ensure we had a wonderful stay. As it was our honeymoon they gave us a lovely gift and even took our photo and had it printed as a special momento of our stay. We enjoyed dinner at the property one evening and it was amazing! So many wonderful dishes! Breakfast was also spectacular!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We were picked up and droppd off at the station before and after our stay The kaiseki meals were delicious Location was convenient to the sights we wanted to see They offered free sake tasting in the Onsen area
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The food was exquisite and perfectly presented . The Onsen was also beautifully arranged and the facilities were clean and a high standard.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was the best hotel we visited in Japan, hands down. Staff was friendly and spoke decent English, and the meals were incredible. Hot springs were clean and nice as well!
Yamanoryosha Nakaodaira - Takayama - Building
3
9.5 Excellent (113 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Located in Takayama, YAMANORYOSHA NAKAODAIRA is a 1-minute drive from Shin Hotaka Onsen and 6 minutes from Shinhotaka Ropeway. The front desk is staffed during limited hours. Free self parking is available onsite.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great atmosphere. Superb service from Nakao and her husband. The food and it’s presentation was incredible. Beautiful private Onsen with views of the snow capped mountains.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff was really attentive and careful about our needs, the hot spring baths were very clean and extraordinary atmosphere, the food was delicious and freshly prepared.
Cons: The only point is the early check-out time and breakfast menu (only Japanese style) - except this, everything was perfect.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I read the great reviews before and I confirm the 5 stars. The size of the property (6 rooms), the 6 private onsens (incl 2 outdoors with forest/mountain views), the sense of welcome from the owners, the excellent Japanese food and all the advice on things to do around were exceptional. What I loved the most were the little notes on the table about the food we ate. They gather wild edible vegetables from the mountain and they cook with it. It tastes amazing! Plus you learn about it. After visiting Tokyo, Hakone and Kyoto, this place was my highlight, away from the crowd with a true authentic feeling. Note that a car is essential to get there.
Cons: Nothing.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owners speak excellent English, and are super friendly. They provide information far exceeds our expectation. Room is very big and modern, super clean as well. The whole place is heated from the floor and really comfortable. There are only 6 room, yet ther are 6 private bath. Both dinner and breakfast are freshly prepared with local flavor, very delicious and big enough even if you have a big tomach. Overall it is an amazing place!
Cons: None
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Such a wonderful gem. The staff were so helpful and even gave us a ride down the road so we didn't have to carry our luggage. Easy enough to get to from Takayama just one bus. Spotlessly clean. The onsens were beautiful both inside and outside options. The food served was delicious. My friend and I couldn't rate this place enough.
Cons: Although easy to get to by bus it would have been much easier by car. Plus, you then have the added bonus of being able to drive yourself around the area rather than relying on buses because the area is a little more remote.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Food was really good and, as they always serves several dishes, it is in more than sufficient quantity. With 6 different available onsens you could go and take a batch at anytime you want (at least one is always free). The personnel was really helpful to get any informations (itinerary/bus to X or Y place, weather conditions, things to see...) and give car rides from/to get to the bus stop.
Cons: I don't know if it is a deliberate choice or not but we could used some clocks (or hourglass) in the onsen rooms because once you are in it, you can really lose track of time!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great onsen , kind peppole , Great private Baths .
9.2 Excellent
Pros: I'm a vegetarian and the staff really went the extra mile so that I will have enough options. The outdoor private onsens are amazing, super relaxing, surrounded by trees and mountain view.
Cons: We rented a car, so the location wasn't an issue for us at all, but in general it might bit challenging because it's not close to any attractions
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was the second time I visited Nakaodaira and again it was as good as I remembered, and some. The individual onsen rooms, outdoors and indoors, and the wonderfully prepared meals show just how much care and attention is being put into tending this fantastic ryokan.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was one of the best experiences I've ever had, and the highlight of my entire trip to Japan. The rooms, the house, the board games and home cooked meals, the private onsen including an outdoor hot spring - absolutely everything exceeded expectations.
Cons: There was nothing I didn't like.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Superb service and absolutely stunning food - a positive gem!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Everything was OK and owners were kind.
Cons: As I said before everything was OK.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Delicious dinner and breakfast Spacious room (deluxe) with traditional features Very kind and helpful staff Bikes available to cycle in Takayama The availability of washing machines and tumble dryers - ideal when Takayama is half way in your Japan journey Lovely onsen bath with convenient opening time during the day
9.0 Excellent
Pros: the location is very good, facility is nice clean and cozy as well, though not brand new, the hotel offers the best hospitality experience to guests with warm smiles and nice treats- we truly enjoyed their service and facilities as well. It is also educational with many of the takayama local intro, highly recommended for tourists if you stopover at Takayama for one night or two.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It's a lovely place, beautiful spacious rooms and very good breakfast and dinner. It's very well managed and the personnel is very friendly and helpful. We had to leave one day earlier and without asking they refunded the last night to us. That was so friendly and I did not expect that at all, it was our loss to have to leave earlier but they gave this amazing service, thank you for that!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The room is very confortable, also the futon. We were lucky because We enjoyed the onsen experience with few person (one time also alone). But if there are many people then it Can be not so good and relaxing. The staff is very kind.
Cons: The view from our room was like a garbage deposit or something close to. We had to stay with the window closed and imagine to have mountains behind it. If you pay 400€ for one night I think you want something different also in the background. We suggest to have the kaiseki dinner and the traditional Japanese breakfast only to those who feel ready to try it. I liked the dinner, less the breakfast (fish, soup, vegetables and so on while we are used to have brioches and cappuccino). My girlfriend none of them. Even if all was good at the end, I think 400€ is still too much for what you have back.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: A beautifully styled traditional Japanese ryokan, we particularly liked the breakfast which was an absolute feast. It’s in a perfect location, a five minute walk from some of the beautiful preserved streets, and close to some great bars and restaurants - we would definitely recommend!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing place, uniqe and special, authentic japanic atmosphere, the team are lovly, every thing is just clean and neat. Great ecperience
9.2 Excellent

Cons: No private bath

Pros: Their staffs are very nice and good English. Dinner and breakfast are delicious.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is a true gem of an experience. We opted for the breakfast and dinner meals with our stay and i recommend you do the same because it is out of this world! Superb in everyway. Our favorite meals during our three week trip in Japan. Also, i enjoyed the alternating onsens. Finally, staff is so helpful and friendly; they went out of their way to make sure we had a great time. A memorable, delicious and delightful experience. Book now!!!!
10.0 Excellent
Cons: Great location, very clean, relaxed accommodation, friendly and helpful staff. The food was excellent. We enjoyed our stay
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great ryokan experience at very very good price. Nice onsen, welcoming and homely atmosphere, comfortable futons, absolutely delicious dinner and breakfast. The dinner consisted of several courses, we were so full but had to try everything. Meals seemed to be japanese with some western twist. The location on a little hill above the town offers nice view. Although it was OK to walk from the station for us (it is actually pleasant walk through the interesting parts of the town which we enjoyed), you dont need to walk since there is free shuttle to and from the station. The location is in walking distance to all the sights and interesting places. Everything was just perfect!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Food was extremely good (although slightly westernized compared to other ryokan). Location is great. Free shuttle to and from the train station was very helpful.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Both breakfast and dinner were awesome (and so much food)! The staff was very accommodating and spoke great English, and the futons were very comfortable
Cons: It is a bit of a hike from the train station, but they offer shuttles and it's still within walking distance to Sanmachi-suji!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We had a wonderful stay. The rooms were nice and comfy. Everything was very clean. The onsen are perfect to relax and are switched every day, so you can enjoy both. The food was absolutely amazing, especially our Dinner at the first night! They just kept bringing more and more delicious various kinds of food!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful ryokan, nice host, amazing japanese experience and original japanese dinner and breakfast. 10/10!!!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Dinner and breakfast super! Little far from station but in a wonderful location for the old psrt of the city. It's a lovely place!
Sumiyoshi Ryokan - Takayama - Building
6
9.3 Excellent (477 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Sumiyoshi Ryokan in Takayama (Hida Takayama Onsen), you'll be within a 10-minute walk of Takayama Jinya and Takumikan Craft Museum. Featured amenities include complimentary wired Internet access, luggage storage, and laundry facilities. Free self parking is available onsite.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Really enjoyed the river and garden view from our ground floor room. This is a traditional home with amazing interiors and traditional decorations. We had a private toilet with sink even tough the booking said that toilet and bathroom were shared, so that was a welcome surprise. Enjoyed the large japanese style bath that you can use on your own. The elderly owners were very sweet and accommodating.
Cons: The windows could use some upgrade. As far as futon beds go, these were not the most comfortable ones.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Staying at this ryokan was a most impressive experience in itself! The space in the building is very beautifully organized, the owners were extremely friendly and helpful, and the kaisekis we had were the most exquisite meals during our trip. If you want to relax for a couple of days and enjoy staying at a ryokan, this is an excellent choice!
Cons: It is not fare to complain with all the warmth we saw from the owners, but potential customers must be aware that staying at a traditional ryokan implies some rules, which you have to follow. For example, there is a curfew (from 11 p.m. onwards); the beds are made (by the staff) at the same place where the table is placed during the daytime. As a consequence, you have to sleep and stay awake according to the customary pattern of the house, not just your whim.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The food is excellent. Admittedly a lot, but excellent.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The food and the friendly hosts
7.9 Good
Pros: Beautiful old house, lovely staff with a funny old Japanese lady. Traditional decoration that made it unique. Very good place next to the river. Breakfast is very good, both the Japanese one (recommended) and the continental one.
Cons: To be honest, I barely slept the 2 nights I was there. It's not the inn fault, but it's just that the traditional Japanese bedding is not for me. It's like sleeping on hard floor. So if you think it's not for you, maybe choose a more common hotel.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The atmosphere. The location. The rooms. The Hosts. The meals.
Cons: No bathrooms in the rooms.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The proprietors were absolutely delightful. The location was excellent, as was the food. We were sad to leave, as we were made to feel so welcome.
Cons: Nothing.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was one of the best places we stayed in Japan. The staff are amazing and make you feel at home. Definitely include japanese breakfast and dinner with your stay, you wont be disappointed (or hungry after!). Served a banquet to our rooms and everything was delicious. Onsen is fantastic, turns out we were the only guests for our 2 night stay so we could use it for as long as we needed which was great after a long hike around the area. Couldnt recommend this place more, made such a change from the city. Also very close to the morning market and the centre of Takayama
Cons: Loved everything
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Perfect to immerse yourself in traditional Japanese hospitality. The staff is extremely friendly and so dedicated to serving their guests and explaining Japanese traditions and cuisine. Very well located next to the river, within a 10 min walk radius to Takayama’s top attractions.
Cons: N/A

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was just perfect. From the moment we reached the property it was like walking into heaven. The staff were so warm and friendly we truly felt like part of the family. The room itself is incredible, dinner is an amazing experience by itself and the taste is beyond description. The baths themselves are super relaxing and nice both the one in the room and the public one. Definitely worth the money and the visit. Would come again first chance I have.
Cons: The place itself is kind of hard to reach, especially if you don't rent a car, by car it took us around 40-50 min to reach it from takayama.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: A really pretty property nestled amongst the mountains . Excellent service from staff . Dinner was divine , one of the best meal I had during the trip . In addition to private onsen in each room there are also two public onsens. hidaji was thoughtful to allow the public onsens be reserved between 9.30pm till next morning . Had a wonderful and relaxing time . Highly recommended if you are looking for a authentic Japanese experience of sleeping on tatami , soaking in onsen , good food and great hospitality .
Cons: If you don’t drive , will need some effort to get there . But once you get the instructions from staff , it’s pretty easy . Takayama JR line and bus station is right next to one another. Takayama is a beautiful town worth visiting . I took early morning JR train from Nagoya to Takayama, spend the morning there and caught the 3 something bus arriving at Hidaji just before 5pm . Next morning , the staff will send you to the bus station after checkout to catch the 11.15am bus back to Takayama .

10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is one of the most stunning places I have ever stayed in. The breakfast and dinner were superb. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. We loved everything about this place.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The most exception dinner, delectable dishes made with local ingredients. One of the best onsen ryokan dinners and breakfast I have had! The public onsen has a beautiful open view of the serene mountain surroundings, we never had to share with anyone and the ryokan was quiet and peaceful. The best service by the hotel staff.
Cons: Nothing
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Food was excellent and high quality.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Communications beforehand were great, when we arrived the staff met us outside and coordinated a wonderful greeting. Made us feel truly special and take care of. Everything we needed was there and not once did we feel uncomfortable. The food was spectacular for dinner and breakfast and the staff was very helpful in making sure we enjoyed the meals to the fullest. Staying here is definitely a highlight of our trip and would highly recommend to anyone.
Cons: There wasn't much to dislike about the stay. Would have liked a seat to relax outside by the private onsen but other than that it was pretty much perfect.

8.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location (1min away from the bus and train station), 10min walking distance to the old part of Takayama. Super friendly host, perfect if you want to experience a Japanese Ryokan.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is located quite near the bus and the train station though it is a 15 mins walk. The hotel is quiet, cosy and very clean. The staff are very friendly especially the old lady whom we met the next morning. She speaks very good English. The Japanese B'fast is excellent which my husband and I enjoyed very much.
Cons: We didn't like sleeping in a Tatami as it is difficult for us to get up. There isn't any attached bath, again it is inconvenient. Fortunately the hotel provides a private bath which we enjoyed using it.
7.0 Good
Pros: Unique atmosphere, staff very helpful
Cons: Breakfast was Ok, not much more. Bath in room can be better
9.6 Excellent
Pros: We wanted to splurge just once during our trip to Japan to experience some classy Ryokan and I am glad we picked this one. It's ridiculously close to the train station (a 3 minute walk), very beautiful on the inside and staff are really attentive. The room was big and nice, there's a big bath in the first floor and it's filled with nice and welcoming details. Would definitely recommend!
Cons: It's certainly not cheap, but worth it.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Very good ryokan in the heart of beautiful Takayama. Rooms are spatious and very clean. The onsen is small but nicely decorated. We had a room with a shower as well, which is also convenient. Staff was friendly, but also very professional and authentic which sometimes made it a bit "stiff". You receive a cup of green tea and a Japanese sweet upon check-in. You receive a kimono and yukata as well, which you can wear throughout the stay. The experience was very traditional, and this was a nice experience for once.
Cons: Expensive, but it is worth the price to have the experience. And if you are looking for a ryokan to try out during your Japan stay, then this is a very good option.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great service and friendly staff, facilities.
7.1 Good

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The stay at Oyada was absolutely fantastic. From the moment we booked in they explained everything about the hotel and our room 306 was fantastic. Great hotel and would recommend- worth every penny. We are currently in a very expensive Ryokan in Kyoto and it is know where near as good as this property in Takayama.
Cons: Nothing / excellent

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location between the old town and the train station, enclosed sleeping space, plenty of showers, open and inviting feel.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very close to Takayama Station (less than 5min walk). There are many lovely cafes nearby! The staff were lovely and the rules that were in place were for courtesy to the other travelers. For instance, if packing after 10pm we were asked to do so in the lobby (which is on the same floor) which was not any additional hassle for me and just generally lended for a quieter sleeping experience. Mini light and locker in each capsule. Provided with towel. The showers and toilet were lovely. The common area had really lovely natural light coming in from the windows and was lovely for journaling.
Cons: Nothing in particular! There’s no elevator to the 3rd floor where the reception is which may be relevant to some
9.2 Excellent

Pros: The staff are nice and helpful. My family and I love it a lot!
Cons: Nothing I can think of. Excellent experience.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Location (right in the old town center), onsen facilities, shuttle service, service
Cons: Half board meals were good but have had more fancy ones at other ryokans, considering that the rate per night was not cheap.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was fantastic. The staff was very friendly. Hotel is located on the center of the town, closing to red brigde and morning market.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Good location and good breakfast
Cons: One of the dinner we chose was a steak dinner which was served by The Alice, not a proper restaurant in town. The meal was just average and we were not impressed as Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan is an excellent ryokan. We were expecting a real onsen experience but unfortunately we were given a jacuzzi intsead.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Perfect location for exploring Takayama. Staff couldn’t do enough to help us during our stay. Expertly cooked food served in our private dinning room. Bikes available for sightseeing.
Cons: Having to leave

Pros: very nice onsen resort
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Fabulous food and personal service.
Cons: Quite expensive but worth it.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The ambiance along with the care shown to us in setting the scene for our Japanese experience. Nothing, every detail was included from the welcome, the introduction to education re dressing in a kimono. The food was exquisitely prepared & even the futon was comfortable - it had to be after relaxing in the outdoor onsen - a unique experience.
Cons: Breakfast could have been a little more European although that would be carping.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: A perfect Ryokan experience, leaving my family, especially my son with an unforgettable memory. Thanks everyone at the Honjin hiranoya Kachoan, especially my room attendant Manami(麻奈美)!My boy likes this pretty sister very much. I am looking forward to the next trip to Japan and hope that my family will come back here again.
Cons: It would be better if hotel could inform the guests in advance more detailed introductions about the Ryokan.

Pros: Wonderful experience! Very attentive staff and beautiful grounds.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Kei met us when the shuttle bus arrived at the ryokan. He checked us in and showed us the room and then served us two dinners and two breakfasts in our private dining room. He was great. The atmosphere of the ryokan was pleasant and seemed very authentic. The food was fantastic. We had no trouble communicating with anyone. The TV had only Japanese channels, so we got a break from TV.
Cons: It’s not within walking distance of the sights, but the shuttle bus is very efficient and we did not need to use a taxi.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The dinner and breakfast experience was very good. Overall we had a relaxed time at Hidatei Hanaougi.
Cons: No negative comments
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The private Onsen was delightful. The staff were exceptional.
Cons: The location was a bit out of the way, so we were unable to walk anywhere. However, a free shuttle bus to the station and nearby morning market was useful.
9.2 Excellent
Cons: Fantastic experience to do once (and more!) in a life. Relaxing place and wonderful hospitality. Madame Ochiai was all the time at our side and disposal. She has been so kind and gentle (moreover, she speeks a very good English). We slept in a futon bed and a japanese room. I will recommend this place to all my friends. GREAT STAFF.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: We had a fantastic experience! The onsen water at Hidatei Hanaougi felt like silk. They have a small foot bath near the entrance of the Ryokan, public onsens for guests and you can also book a private onsen. The staff were very friendly and are there to help you in any way. Overall, we were very happy with our stay!

Overview Reviews
Fukuji Onsen. Enjoy a mountain stream open-air bath at this converted Hida folk house. Committed to preserving the onsen hotel tradition. Step back in time to the Oku-Hida of last century. Private use of the open-air baths is free of charge. Take a dip in the foamy bubbles of the carbonated waters and feel the effects all over. In the evening, dine on Hida beef and freshly gathered mountain vegetables.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The special atmosphere, the great onsene experience by the river. The special dinner
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Staff were very friendly and nice tho they don't speak a lot of English, they tried their best to help us. The environment was very pretty with traditional Japanese design. Breakfast and dinner had a big variety of food which let us tried different things, we were amazed with all the little utensil that they provided. Onsen was nice and comfortable with public and private one, a very relaxing place indeed.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Great
Cons: Beds were slightly uncomfortable as not used to sleeping on the mat
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The hot springs were fabulous.
Cons: Bedding was a bit uncomfortable compared to other Ryokans we stayed at.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We chose this onsen ryokan in Fukuchi Onsen area because we wanted a more quiet natural setting -- and we were not disappointed! The rotenburo (outside) onsens (both public and private ones) were all beautifully integrated with nature and landscape outside which included rushing creeks, the inside onsens were also nice. The ryokan (inn) itself had a lot of architectural character, our room for two was very spacious with a separate sitting and sleeping area, both the dinner and breakfast was fantastic. They made mochi every morning and let the guest participate in the pounding.
Cons: NA
10.0 Excellent
Pros: An amazing old building incorporated into bigger facilities. Onsen baths were great.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The ryokan is located in a peacfull part of the forest, which adds to the great and relaxing atmosphere. The staff is attentive and welcoming, and it seems as if their only wish is to make you comfortable. The facilities are great, including the onsens, the food and the room itself, which is spacious and traditional. Overall, we had a unieque experience and we would recommed a visit to anyone who whishes to get some break from touring.
Cons: A sign in english outside would make it easier to find
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful property. Mix of traditional with modern touches. Pristinely clean. The baths are beautiful, especially the public one and the smaller ones by the river. Dinner was really an experience.
Cons: Nothing. Was lovely.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was a beautiful mountain compound with three awesome bath areas. It was so serene to be there and the food was delicious. Our stay here was the highlight of our trip to japan.
Cons: Nothing.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Our stay at Soene was the highlight of our trip to Japan and the best accommodation experience we have ever had. The natural setting and architecture is stunning, and left us in awe. Surrounded by mountains, lush forest, fishing streams and small gardens of the surrounding village, it exudes serenity. During our stay in July, the hydrangeas were blooming, which we could enjoy from the lovely garden view in our room and from the hallways. The onsen were wonderful - private onsen with both indoor and outdoor pools, as well as an undercover but outdoor public onsen with a leafy forest view, and two public rotenburo overlooking the river. Our room was large, elegant and comfortable, and we loved wearing the soft samue that were provided. The food was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented, and carefully explained by the attentive staff (who made us feel really welcome despite our lack of Japanese). Watching the fireflies was magical - a truly memorable experience.
Cons: Nothing - it was incredible. Thank you Soene!

Pros: Fantastic stay from the beginning to the end! Beautiful place with a very nice Onsen. Delicious food I will remember for a long time. Very warm and attentive welcome, thank you so much for such a nice stay and service .
Cons: Nothing
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The food for both dinner and breakfast was quite incredible - a Japanese feast. So much of it, in beautiful little bowls. The Onsen experience was good. The shuttle bus was very convenient. Initially we were disappointed not to eat in our room as expected, but in fact having a meal at a standard height table in our own private dining room was more comfortable.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: We stayed in a room with a private onsen. The room was very comfortable and the food was outstanding.
Cons: It’s a bit far from the historic district. Probably too far for most to walk, although there is a shuttle.
7.1 Good
Pros: Something different from the large hotels in the big cities! Friendly staff!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The food there (dinner and breakfast which was included) is amazing! That in itself was worth the price. We also had a massage chair in the room which we sat in for hours and they provided beautiful kimonos for us to lounge around in.
Cons: The shower needs to be higher, it only has a waist-high attachment which means we have to sit down to shower, not sure if its because its the traditional way to shower but the option of a higher attachment would be good.
7.9 Good
Pros: Food was good and varied. We tried things we never had before. Beds were very comfortable.
Cons: Dinner was a bit rushed considering it’s a degustation menu. A bit far from the town center
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very traditional ryokan, nicest experience ever. The private Onsen was just amazing
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Perfect! A bit expensive but worth it.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Absolutely beautiful traditional Japanese ryokan. Once you have taken off your shoes at the entrance, you are in a tranquil Japanese oasis. I have never slept so well on a floor (futon on tatami mats to be precise). And having sliding screens to our own patio and private Onsen was such a treat. We also made use of the public Onsen baths (single sex) - so relaxing. As for the food, the first night we had a fabulous traditional kaiseki dinner of multiple Japanese courses, while the second night we again had a number of courses but the headline act was shabu shabu to cook ourselves over individual burners. Fantastic experience and when you factor in that it’s half board and Onsen is free to use, well worth it.
Cons: It was all lovely.

Pros: Staff were very friendly and very helpful particularly the girl who served our meal in the room. We would also like to make a special mention to the chef as the meals were excellent and varied. Very interesting and beautifully presented.
Cons: All good
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything is good here. Food is excellent, amazing variety during breakfast and dinner. I did not I had half board. Normally I don’t like to have dinner at the hotel but this time was incredible. One day the dinner was at the hotel and another day in a restaurant. I liked the one at the hotel most compared to the restaurant. The room is so beautiful, I got upgraded to the sister hotel which is right in front. I had city views. The room is living room during the day and bedroom during the night. The staff will setup the futon for you. If you don’t like hard mattress better you ask for an additional futon. The place is very peaceful and zen. The staff will do the impossible to make your stay perfect. They will greet every time to arrive and leave, they will explain all the ingredients of the food if you ask, they will give you insights of the city and many things more. If you ever come to Takayama, you must stay here and experience a ryokan stay. They have an Onsen as well which unfortunately did not have much tome to enjoy. Next time for sure. I wish 5 star hotels learn from ryokan hospitality.
Cons: Nothing!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Staff, location and food. Great ryokan, beautiful view.
7.9 Good
Pros: The staff is very nice and helpful . The diners were very good. Good location
Cons: The confort of beds in ryokans is always limited
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast and dinner were fabulous. The service was great. The staff of the hotel was very kind, patient, and managing to do whatever they can do. The location was wonderful. Just outside the central part of the busy area but only took a couple of minutes to get there.
Cons: The accommodation price might be a little bit high but, believe me, you will get beyond your expectation.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very nice staff, great location just near the center, great dinner served in our room!

Pros: The staff was very friendly and spoke very good English. The absolute highlight is the local mobile phone you can use to find your way through the City. This is a great value for those who do not have a contract which does include Japan.
Cons: All perfect
7.5 Good
Pros: This hotel is in a great location, only a two minute walk from the train station. There are lots of shops and restaurants just steps away. There are really not any luxury hotels in the area, so we made the BW work. The staff were very pleasant and efficient. The highlight was a fantastic massage chair in the room!
Cons: The bathrooms were very dated and smelled a bit musty.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Room size, cleanliness, location and coffee machine in my room. Breakfast was good
Cons: Came as a family of 4 and did ask if we could fit in one room but was told too tight! When we arrived our room had 2 king doubles and a single. We could of fit comfortably enough at my expence or could of placed me in a connecting roim as I slept in a room across the hall. Never the less enjoyed ouf stay Marco
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is located 3 min from the station. Good restaurant and it was the first hotel in Japan with friendly staff (in Japan most of the people are unpolite)
Cons: Smell of smoking

8.8 Excellent
Pros: Close to the train station, 7/11, restaurants, etc. Ten minutes walk to the main sites.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very clean with all facilities for what is a business hotel. The big bonus was the roof top onsen (separate women’s and men’s) with an outside bath.
Cons: Even though I was on anon smoking floor you could still smell strongly tobacco in the corridors and especially on the onsen floor.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This hotel is only a few minutes walk from the train station and was close to everything , including the markets, many, many restaurants, and the walking tours around this small city. There are computers in the lobby on which you can search for restaurants in the area in which you might be interested. Turns out this was what to do because the first night we wandered around for ages before finding a restaurant that was open! And it was a Saturday night, so I'm not sure why so many were closed. The second night we went out armed with a few names of restaurants that showed they were open on the computer and easily found the first on our list which turned out to be a great choice. Also, the Sunday that we were there ,there was a food festival which was wonderful. We ate breakfast and lunch from the food stands. There were many, many delicious options.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location between train station and main attractions. The included rooftop onsen is a real winner. Be sure to try the outdoor bath if weather permits. Helpful staff. Comfortable room and good bathroom.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Small rooms (as usual in Japan), with all that is necessary appliances. Little space is left for your own stuff, but well, space is limited. Friendly staff that speak some English, hard mattresses, good airco. The bathroom is a cabin. There is a public bath in the top floor where you can be in hot water outdoors under the sky. Public baths are separated for men and women, obviously. Breakfast (USD12) is quite good and varied for both Japanese and Western standards, although they could have some fresh fruits. Drinks and ice vending machines in several floors. There is one compliment I have to give this hotel: Thanks for letting me in the room 30 minutes before check-in time! This is normally 100% inflexible in Japanese hotels and this one was generous with me after 24 hours travelling.
Cons: The quilt in the bed is prepared for the toughest days of winter and it is not removed during the 30+ degrees of summer!
7.0 Good
Pros: The spa was good.
Cons: Having just one chair in the room.
7.9 Good
Pros: Great location, nice staff, clean and had all the usual hotel toiletries for Japan.
Cons: The air conditioning was quite loud and blew quite hard for me. The rooms are smallish but normal for a lot of Japanese hotels.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Hotel roof spa was especially pretty and pleasant. Hotel breakfast was excellent. Enjoyed chatting with other travelers. Everyone was very nice at Hotel Spa Alpina Hida Takayama hotel.
Cons: Spartan rooms need better towels. Alarm clock in next door room went off for two mornings in a row at 3:30 a.m.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Very close to the train and bus station, great free spa facilities
Cons: small room, very basic bathroom
5.8 Okay
Pros: Nothing
Cons: I have paid 18000 Yen 1 night for a hole room. The pillow was very hard, unconfortable. 1 stairs was between of the room and the bathroom. A waterfall was In the wall the livelong night. The breakfast was very poor. This is a Valueless hotel.

Cons: Smell cigarettes in the room. Not good for children. Facility a little bit old.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Location Cleanliness Price
Cons: Hard beds
8.0 Excellent
Pros: I did worry a bit when I read the latest reviews on the hotel as they were so negative unlike when we booked. I had taken a tip from another traveller about checking the square meter of the room so opted for the largest. This provided more than enough space and was in line with other hotels in Japan. The bed was firm but comfortable and the pillows soft on one side and harder on the other. The bathroom was a capsule type again similar to other hotels in Japan. We received a warm welcome by the staff when we arrived ahead of booking in time and had our luggage stowed until we returned. Good location for all the spots and easy to reach from the station.
Cons: Whilst the buffet had a wide variety of fresh food, it would have been good to have had some fresh fruit.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location, right across the street from the bus terminal and the train station
7.0 Good
Cons: The step from bathroom to sitting which is potentially dangerous for elderly

Pros: The shared hot spring bath was excellent and the staff are really friendly. The location is perfect - close to the station and also close to the main tourist attractions and restaurants!
Cons: The shower in the room wasn’t the best
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The room was spacious, the staff were friendly and the location was great.
Cons: The pillows were very uncomfortable and a guide to the remote in English would have been good.
7.5 Good
Pros: I love the traditional environment
8.0 Excellent
Pros: When entering the hotel we had to change the shoes to comfy slippers. Walking on the comfortable carpet floor made it feel like we were in a place of relaxation. We were happy about the room - it's spacious and there's a lot of space for clothes. We had a small on which tea and croissants which were placed on our table every day. We were quite delighted about this as we could have a small breakfast in our room every day. The onsen was also very cosy with warm water and showers.
5.8 Okay
Pros: Great position. The new carpet that was being fitted whilst were were staying.
Cons: If you are looking for a dip into Japanese culture by staying in Ryokan style accommodation, then this hotel will disappoint. It has the 'shabby' but the 'chic' is a bit thin on the ground. The room decor was careworn. The bed was a frame of wooden laths, topped with three small western mattress panels, topped with a futon mattress. Which of these components contributed the lumpiness is open to conjecture. The rack rate is mid to upper mid rate. There were a lot of younger travellers there that may have enjoyed the quasi-Japanese 'vibe', but if you are old enough to need a chair to put your socks on, then it is just uncomfortable.
7.1 Good
Pros: The traditional room was really stunning.
Cons: If you want to shower or bath, you ONLY have the public onsen; there are no private showers.
6.7 Good
Pros: well located, close to the main street and to the train station.
Cons: beds were pretty uncomfortable, second night was bad for our back and were willing to leave.
7.5 Good
Pros: It was spacious, quiet and had a view of the river.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The Japanese breakfast was AMAZING with individual braziers for soup and mountain vegetables cooked on a leaf with house-made miso. From the moment we walked through the noren into the entryway garden and into the tatami mat rooms, we felt the tranquillity of old Japan. The location, staff and furo (bath) were the best!
Cons: The carpeted area in the room looked worn and stained.
6.7 Good
Pros: Had not realised there was a deadline for check-in but they were happy to check me in 1 hour later at no extra charge.
Cons: Very basic and old rooms even for a ryokan, in need of a refurb inside.
