Size of room considered big by japan standards! Onsen is a great plus after a Long day out. Found out that it is private use which is even better!

9.6 Excellent
Pros: We loved the place! Very clean. Nice comfortable Onsen, private use. Our room with a mountain view was quiet and warm while it was below zero at night. The hotel is run by a family, they are caring and nice people. Our breakfast was delicious and hearty. We were given even more than we expected with a personal touch. Location is convenient , next to bus stop #13, while Nikko heritage site is located on #9 which is 5 minutes away by bus.
Cons: The pillows were a bit hard for my liking yet most of the pillows I had in my Japanese hotels were similar. This is probably a cultural thing. Yet after a full day exploring Nikko and a great evening in Onsen bath I could fall asleep on a rock let alone this pillow.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Incredible staff - we forgot an item at a restaurent in the city center and had difficulty communicating with the place - the manager actually when to pick it up for us without us even asking! Private onsen was also very nice after a long day sightseeing in Nikko.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: We love this hotel very much, an authentic Japanese experience in the rural town of Nikko. The onsen facilities were superb. We tried both private and public onsen and we loved it. Very spacious feel in the public onsen. We also enjoyed the in-door onsen with a view of the garden outside our balcony. The room is very spacious to enjoy in-room dining. Hotel staffs were so courteous, friendly and always smiling which we truly appreciate to make our stay so homey. Dinners and breakfasts of the local Japanese cuisines were very fulfilling and sumptuous and we truly enjoyed our dining experience and stay in Okunoin Hotel Tokugawa. We highly recommend anyone who are interested to visit this beautiful town of Nikko to stay in this awesome traditional Japanese style hotel. The gardens outside were so pretty and well taken care off. We can't stop taking pictures in the garden! We were so happy we got to book this hotel during our planned travel period to Nikko as there were not many good hotels around here and if there is, it would be easily booked out. And the complimentary bus shuttle from hotel to train stations are available if you reserve early. Good service by the hotel staffs too in all aspects.
Cons: nothing bad at all.. Perhaps they could consider having more souvenirs items in their in-house shop so that for guests who do not have much time to shop around in town, they could buy it from the hotel, just a suggestion in future.. :)

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Absolutely loved this place. The value for money for service, food and facilities was exceptional. The meals were a beautiful, traditional experience and the staff were incredibly warm and gracious. The private outdoor onsen (free for use, staff keep track of when it's occupied, they request you use it for no longer than an hour) was a wonderful experience after a long, cold day of hiking in November.
Cons: Nothing! The sulphur smell of the onsen water can be a shock to the system -- but it's the real deal.

Pros: Clean, staffs are concerned to the custoners
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The staffs are very friendly and provide a 'butler service' in a tradition Japanese way. We are surprised that staffs came out to welcome us when we still 20 metres away from the hotel. We stayed in the begining of February which probably is not the peak season so the whole staying feels very private and enjoyable. We even have our own dining room. I informed the hotel this is my husband's first trip to Japan to celebrate his birthday. We got a special staff bring in entertainment and souvenir as a gift after our dinner to celebrate, which is very nice of the hotel. The dinner is about 12 course set menu, very lovely! Overall, the experience is great and we would love to come back here again.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Staff were very friendly and welcoming and they also had English speaking staff to explain everything to us at arrival. It was our first time at an onsen, we enjoyed the experience and the facilities provided. Onsen was lovely and hot and we were the only ones in while we were there due to off season. Had the kaiseki dinner as well which was delicious and well explained in English. Location was spot on, 5 min walk from the bus stop (Stop 7- Shinkyo) where you can get a bus to train station and Chuzenji falls. It is within walking distance to the temples and shrines, so top marks for that!
Cons: A little bit pricey but couldn’t fault anything else.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic meals! We simply love the yuba and tofu making experience over kaiseki dinner and the breakfast was superb. Thank you! Your front desk staff were amazingly friendly and helpful. Thank you Raki for the excellent English language service support. The shuttle service was great - we appreciate it very much. Will definitely choose to stay here again.
Cons: Everything was good.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Central location to all the sights. Delicious kaiseki dinner. Friendly staff - they have some English-speaking staff, which made our stay easier. The garden was also well-maintained.
Cons: The property is a little on the older side for the price, but I figure we were paying for the location.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Nikko Hoshino Yado is quiet but perfectly located to visit the World Heritage shrines and forest and the beautiful town of Nikko. The ryokan accommodation was very comfortable and the Japanese garden is an extra treat. The staff and service were exception and the kaizeki dinners and japanese breakfasts were exceptional. Highly recommended.
Cons: No negatives to list
10.0 Excellent
Pros: they were very nice and welcoming. helped us a lot
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was our first stay in a Japanese Ryokan. We organized the pickup from the train station before or arrival via email with the hotel and they were super responsive and reliable. Once we arrived at the hotel, we were welcomed in perfect English. Everything was explained to us in no rush, so we had plenty of time to understand how to wear the Yukata and how to use the Onsen. The fantastic service lasted all the way through our stay! Our room had a beautiful view. Overall, I would say the pictures don't do the place justice, it was a lot prettier than expected. Everything was clean, from the room to the Onsen and restaurant. We enjoyed a superb Kaiseki menu for diner and a delicious breakfast. Our recommendation is that you read a little about Kaiseki and local Nikko food beforehand as the menu was only available in Japanese. We had lots of fun with Google translate, though :D ... The futon beds were cozy and comfortable. Can absolutely recommend and would love to stay again!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Quiet, serene hotel in a fantastic location. The hotel is located just a short stroll to many temples and shrines. There's also a bus stop nearby where you can catch the bus to see sights outside of the immediate area (Chuzenji Lake, etc). Dinner is an epic kaiseki experience.

8.0 Excellent
Pros: Authentic experience
Cons: Quite far and hard to get to
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely premises, cute setting across the bridge for dinner. Some nice little homey restaurants in the surrounding village too.
Cons: Takes a bit of time to get to...not that close to Toby-Nikko Station or Kinugawa but it’s worth the trek for those looking for a true getaway. Lots of beautiful nature nearby too.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was great from the moment we walked through the gate... The Japanese atmosphere, the staff, the food, the building, the room... nothing wrong There is even private onsen at very fair price if you have tattoos
Cons: The journey from Tokyo was a little bit stressful with train + bus it would be easier with a pick up service. But travel in Japan is easy and people are always willing to help
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The building is historical and well preserved. The room was very clean and spacious for 2 people. It had a nice view of river and the opposite river bank. All necessary amenities, onsen pouch, and sets of yukata with extra layer for cold weather were provided. We were offered welcome drinks (tea & coffee) and Japanese snacks on arrival and were brought to sit in the lobby area which has a beautiful river view. The dining room for dinner required a short walk on an old but sturdy photogenic vine bridge crossing a river and a few steps. Guests staying in the same room had their own table and each person had their own meal set prepared. The meal (irori dinner) was fantastic, delicious, and well-prepared. The staff would help when we were not sure how to cook/eat them. Breakfast was prepared and served in another venue. It’s traditional Japanese breakfast with local produce and served in buffet style. So make sure you come a bit early or right on time for breakfast! The onsen was great. We paid for a private onsen, 45min-session per room at 1,100yen. It could be booked at checkin. Only 2 of 3 private onsens were available at the time we stayed (one close for renovation). There were 7 sessions (3 before dinner and 4 after dinner) to choose from. I also recommend doing a public onsen (it opens at 2pm so you can dip yourself even before checking-in) if you don’t mind. The view and experience were much better than the private one. Staffs were friendly and nice even though there was a language barrier with limit English but they were eager to help and chat with you. The ryokan is right next to the bus stop. It’s very easy find but might not be quite easy to access from Tokyo by public transport. It required us only 1 transit with limited express Revaty but would be more if go by local trains.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Honke Bankyu gave us an authentic and spiritual Japanese experience that we’ll cherish forever. As a registered historical building built in 1666, the ryokan exuded history and character. Exceptionally well kept, it was very clean with great detail in the interior design. The open-air onsen sits upon the river, making for a magical and unparalleled experience. Crossing the bridge to an outstanding traditional Japanese dinner gave us a holistic experience, and one we couldn’t have had elsewhere. The staff were very attentive and warm from check in to check out. Thank you, HB, for a wonderful stay!
Cons: It took a while to get there by bus, but was absolutely worth it
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very cool atmosphere in this historical ryokan. With the rope bridge over a little river it feels like living in a premium wooden cottage nearby a jungle. The dinner in a separate house on the opposite riverside is very special due to having different dishes in combination with a charcoal barbeque in front of your seat. The onsen was quiet hot but relaxing.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful and very old traditional Japanese house, you will brief history with samurai pictures on the wall Very nice onsen, also private for a small fee Good kaiseki dinner experience Overall great and recommended stay
Cons: Very nice stay
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent staff, very good dinner and ambience. Gives a real feel of the Japanese culture
Cons: We were given a room on the ground floor and thru the night there were creaking sound of footsteps from the floor above. This was possibly because our room was right next to the private onsen and hence a lot of movement late night, but it would be good to know about it in advance

9.6 Excellent
Pros: It was quiet, right next to a beautiful river, the location was pretty close to the major temples and shrines, the best feature is the private hot tubs. Really lovely. There's a double and a single, although after trying both the single is much hotter!
Cons: It was a lil trek to get to the hotel and there's no lift.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Quaint, comfy lodge in Nikko. Charming, slightly kitschy-grandma feel to the rooms, with nice lace curtains and floral bedspreads. Everything was very clean and the staff were very helpful.
Cons: Bit of a long walk down the hall to the bathroom if your room is at the end of the building.
7.0 Good
Pros: - location of the hotel is perfect for sightseeing - quiet neighborhood - very friendly and helpful staff (thank you) - rooms were well equipped - hotel has two Onsen rooms that can be locked, so basically a private Onsen, which is amazing - it's been okay for one night
Cons: - unfortunately our room was smelly - seems like there have been some incidents with stink bugs, so we weren't allowed to open the windows - the rooms look a little bit old-fashioned and the bathroom fittings were quite old - unfortunately the walls were badly soundproofed, so we couldn't sleep that well
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The Inn has a very convenient location. It's right beside the river and you can listen to the water in the morning. It has two private hot springs you can bath in. The beds are very comfortable and the shared bathrooms very clean.
Cons: They had a problem with lady bugs and it was not possible to open the windows. I could have used some fresh air in the room, but they were doing everything to fix it, I believe.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Good location, really friendly staff and the bath was amazing.
Cons: Pillows weren't great.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great PRIVATE Japanese bath, if you feel uncomfortable with public bath this is great way to experience it. There is yukata for you to wear. Everything you need is provided. The owner is super nice and helpful, can communicate in English well!

9.0 Excellent
Pros: Wonderful spot in nature
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The scenery around the hotel. Onsen in the hotel. The staff was very friendly. The lobby looks really nice and charming. Coin-operated washer and dryer are available.
Cons: The onsen availability. It would nice if guests could schedule or reserve the time for onsen rather than guests having to keep checking when it would become available. The location is a bit of a walk from the nearest bus stop. If you take the bus and have big luggage, it can quite tiresome.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Nice cosy B&B close to river, bridge and temple. The spa had great views over river
Cons: A bit quiet and staff spoke limited English
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The location is excellent next to the flowing river, not far from the bus stop.
Cons: The breakfast was not good, it was like prison food, can avoid breakfast and have it elsewhere.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The lady manning the front desk was very nice. There was a bit of a language barrier, but she tried to be as helpful as can be. I think I encountered the owners of the inn the next morning: a lovely older couple. I liked that the room was traditionally decorated: futon mattress on the floor, rattan mat covering the floor and a low table and seat. The bathroom had good water pressure. The toilet seat was heated - nice and toasty as Nikko got quite chilly in the November evenings. Everything was clean and the room had bright lighting. There was a private onsen for guests to use but I didn’t get the chance to.
Cons: The inn is quite a walking distance from the main road. I mean everything is relative, but if you have to walk back to the inn two or more times during the day then your legs will definitely feel it. You definitely need to give yourself enough time to get to where you need to be.
7.0 Good
Pros: Location by the river was picturesque, quiet and convenient - just a 10 minute walk to bus stop for exploring greater Nikko National Park and another 5 minutes to the major shrine/temple area and beautiful bridge. Staff friendly and helpful arranging taxi back to Tobu station (challenging with suitcase on the crowded bus). Onsen was private which made me think of queues but I never had to wait.
Cons: I chose not to have the basic 'fresh fruit, toast and boiled egg, Western style breakfast and would have preferred a Japanese option.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The location was next to a river giving you a peaceful nature feeling. The staff was very helpful and spoke multiple languages including English. Breakfast of fresh fruits, toast, egg and coffee was very good. The private Osen "bath" was great. Our Tatami / Futon bed room had a separate western style bath and shower.
Cons: The bed pillows are more of the traditional Japanese thin style where my wife would have liked a larger fluffy style pillow.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location, onsen, employees/owners
Cons: Wish breakfast had a Japanese option

9.5 Excellent (443 reviews)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hosts were beyond hospitable and offered to deliver our baggage to and from the train station. Even then, the walk was less than 15 minutes, a great way to start and end the day in such an idyllic place. In addition, the Japanese-style breakfast was very good and well worth it! The WiFi was fast, the room heating worked well, and room very clean. I would love to stay here again.
Cons: The bathroom was a bit chilly but not a problem at all!

Cons: Maybe the distance to the station (15 minutes walk), but they can pick you up whenever you want, so it is not really à problem! And the distance worths the kindness of this lovely couple.

The hosts are going to do anything to make you feel good, and I recommend you to have the japanese breakfast, it is so good!! Me and my partner are vegetarians and they prepared a special vegetarian japanese breakfast for us. I love rindou no ie! :)

Pros: The guesthouse owners are so kind. Staying there fulfilled my Japan trip to experience the authentic Japanese cultures, Japanese bedroom, bathroom, breakfast and etc. Although the guesthouse location is a bit far from the train station (10-15 mins walk), the guesthouse owner offered to drive us without a request.
Cons: Just only one thing that is the location, but my boyfriend and I enjoyed walking to the central area.
