Cons: Kayak quoted me around $400 to rent a car for the specified period of time. When I arrived at the Enterprise location, they told me that the cheapest option they had available was going to cost around $900 (including insurance). I had no choice because of the situation I was in, but I was incredibly disappointed that Kayak's quote was so far off. If I had known it would have cost that much, I absolutely would not have rented from this location. I will probably not be using Kayak anymore.

Pros: It was a bit busy, but staff worked fast to try and get everyone out. So customer service was okay. If I did not need the car for only a few hours and I didn't already spend 45 minutes checking the car out, I would not have accepted that car. "Enhanced cleaning" had a lot of dead bugs all over the front of the car and dirt and rocks in the truck bed. Like lots of dirt and rocks. Enterprise does not care for repeat customers.

The return of the car was ridiculous as there were no place to return it other than on the streets. I would never recommend this place to anyone. The only thing that was right was the assistant manager Ryan K. he was kind and really did a good job in making me the customer satisfied. His customer service and his alone was excellent!! He needs a bonus, you should hire more people like him who are willing to keep customers happy.

Cons: We were never given a walk thru and didn’t know the car they gave us had scratches and dents and smelled badly of cigarette smoke. We had to leave the windows down the whole trip. Cons: There was a huge line of people waiting to get their cars and despite this the one and only rep left, saying over her shoulder, someone will be right with you. No one replaced her. There were 3 agents at the hertz counter right next door. It took them several minutes to acknowledge the line of 10+ people waiting at dollar. This was not a busy time at the car rental place. Dollar was the only one with a line greater than 2 people. All-in-all I waited for almost an hour to get my car which was the same amount of time it took to fly to Sacramento from LA. The reps at Hertz did not seem to care that there was this line of people stranded. No “thank you for waiting.” In fact, when I finally got up to the counter and told the rep I was surprised dollar hadn’t scheduled staff at that time, his response was “actually I think we’re going a good job.” Good customer service would have gone a long way here and it was definitely absent at dollar and hertz.

Cons: This was the WORST customer experience I have ever experienced. It all started with not being able to get a direct answer about needing an SUV. I called 4 times and NEVER got a straight answer on pricing. My initial cost was 70 and I ended up paying 320 with the “upgrade cost” when I got there. I felt like I was being schemed on every call and when we showed up. Adding extra costs and then going in the back and “talking to a manager” and lowering it 20 bucks. It was ridiculous. Everyone at the counter was complaining for some reason or other. I honesty was disgusted with how they do businesses.

Cons: I will never pre-pay again! Got a flat and was on hold with Hertz for over an hour and a half. Then the rep put me on hold again to arrange with a local Firestone dealer to replace the tire. The designated dealer refused to help when I called (explanation follows). Called the second one and they said it would take hours to get approval through Hertz, that they needed a PO number. So I called Hertz again only to be told I'd be on hold another 40 minutes. Hung up and called Firestone dealer number 2 back and tell them I'm just going to come in so the replacement can be underway while they're trying to get authorization through the Hertz system (I had the paperwork the Hertz rep emailed me but apparently the tire shop needs this PO). When I got to the shop they explained they wouldn't provide a new tire following Hertz' protocols because they've been burned so much in the past chasing money/trying to get paid (the reason the first shop refused to help me). So I took the car to the airport Hertz dealer but couldn't trade the car in there or to any of the Hertz locations anywhere near Boise, (and possibly the entire state) because they are all private rather than corporate, ie, own their own fleets. If I hadn't pre-paid they could have. So I drove back to Firestone, paid for the new tire out of pocket, and bc I followed the Hertz rep's directions in going to Firestone rather than a more affordable tire shop, paid top dollar. Dealing with this fiasco also robbed me of an entire day of my vacation. Once I turned the car in, the dealer would not reimburse me, told me I'd have to take it up with Hertz corporate. I'm not even going to try. In addition, there was no wiper fluid, and my windshield became a filthy hazard as I drove through snowy/sanded road conditions, so I had to buy a gallon of fluid to fill it up myself. Granted, that's the dealer's oversight, not a result of pre-paying. I needed a car for a month, so thought this would be a good deal, otherwise I'd never rent from Hertz as they are always the most expensive. But between the tire and the fact that my trip ended a week early due to unforeseen circumstances, it certainly was not a bargain. Lesson learned, never again. The one very good thing to come of this is that the tire didn't blow out at 80 mph (legal speed limit) between Nevada and Idaho or I wouldn't be alive to write this review. It went flat after I'd safely parked in front of my friend's house.

Hertz wanted to charge us $200 just for that extra day, which was absurd. I also felt like the woman who checked us in was trying way too hard to up-sell us, and she actually did successfully up-sell us on insurance, which I didn't realize until we'd returned the car.

He was very confusing, stating that our vehicle did not have 4wd and wanted to upgrade me and charge me more. This was frustrating as I had called prior to booking to try to secure a 4wd vehicle. I decided against the additional upgrade and he still wanted to charge me more $ even though I had already prepaid and looked at me like I was crazy when I told him he prepaid. Fortunately we got in the car and there was a 4wd function as had been advertised.

Less than promised- not a Toyota RAV4 but a 2WD JePros: When our car was unsafe to make it over the mountain pass in snow, a local Enterprise dealer allowed us to drop it off without crossing the mountains. He suggested that we might get a more snow-worthy vehicle from Enterprise, but we did not pursue that and found alternate transportation.Cons: We expected and needed a 4WD SUV. The car provided at Sacramento was not that, and getting the type of vehicle we expected required an upgrade. So we took what was provided. But when it was time to return the car, the mountain passes required either 4WD or chains and we did not have that. Our rental was billed as RAV4 or "similar"..but similar meant just another vehicle of similar size, not one that performs as well.

My flight had been delayed for four hours and I was sick, so I was exhausted and not feeling well when I arrived since I also had not eaten much all day. I was told the car was going to be driven around the side of the building for me to pick up. They handed me the keys, told me it was some kind of Nissan and didn't say the color or anything. I walked around the side of the building and a BUNCH of cars had been driven up, including a Nissan that was not my car. I couldn't find my car. I had to walk back around the building and the counter staff seemed annoyed I needed help. I was almost in tears at this point because I was so tired. I just needed a little help and kindness. It turned out the car had not been driven up and was across the parking lot. The guy walked me halfway too it then handed me the keys and made a vague gesture before turning back to the building without a word.

Some of the other rental places in the same building were closed and people weren't able to get their vehicles. Alamo stayed open at least an hour past closing time to help out, and if they minded staying late for work I would have never noticed. Very friendly, great service.Cons: The phone support was pretty poor. The first lady I talked to before my flight left was friendly and polite, but all she could tell me was "They usually stay open if flights are delayed, but it's Friday night, so it depends..." What does that even mean? Anyway, she said she'd put a note on my rental saying that I'd be arriving late, and she told me to call back as soon as I got in. I called Alamo's main support number again as soon as I landed, but the guy on the phone insisted that they'd be closed since it was a little after their listed closing time. I already knew their listed closing time, I explained, but the lady I talked to before my flight had said they would probably stay open a little later so maybe he could check for me? He gave me a number for the local branch so I could try to call them (apparently he couldn't put me on hold and do it himself because that would've been too helpful). It rang through to voice mail twice, but the message didn't mention Alamo at all. I assume he gave me the wrong number, or maybe I wrote it down wrong (it wouldn't have mattered if he'd just called them for me like a decent customer service person would do). So now I was pretty sure I was screwed. I called back to the main number and got the same guy, and he was totally unhelpful again. All I wanted at that point was anything helpful about what I could do if they were closed (could I cancel, get a discount, sleep on the floor in the rentals building, or what?), but the only thing he told me was "you can go there tomorrow morning when they open." Even if he couldn't help, a little bit of understanding or politeness would've been great, but no such luck. Maybe if I'm being generous it wasn't the worst customer service I've ever had, but if so it wasn't by much. Thankfully the guy didn't know what the hell he was talking about and they were still open so it didn't matter.

The system seemed very unorganized. Agent had to run back and forth to car lot multiple times to get keys. First car he got for us was apparently already rented. No inspection was done upon check out, this is a huge RED FLAG. It was up to us to go over the car and markup the damage report in a dark parking lot with little light after waiting forever in line. Upon return the agent was very critical of every piece of damage. Luckily we had caught everything and had marked it on the inspection form.

That said, I did not cancel and book a 4x4 at similar price with another rental company. When I arrived the prices got much higher and told no SUV's have al wheel drive, so I was forced to buy a more expensive vehicle and it was a very dated old jeep. I paid 165% of the original booking for an SUV! Never again.
Cons: They gave us one price on the website then when we checked out at the end of our trip it was more than double. This is not right and a mega scam will never use you guys again.

But Kayak nevertheless charged me a $50 fee for not cancelling the SAC reservation. When I called Avis they said they could not do anything about it because it was a Kayak charge. I don’t know how to contact Kayak other than this.

Phone out of order!! :(Pros: Cancelled reservation — was a nightmareCons: The rental is offsite, not at the rental counter. You are suppose to call a number for them to send a van to pick you up, but the number was out of order. That wasn’t a good sign, so we cancelled the reservation.
While many of Sacramento's best features, including the State Capitol, are located in the downtown area and walking or public transportation are the best ways to go around, renting a car is a great option for travelers looking to explore other destinations outside the city.
