My flight was delayed. Alamo was aware of my flight number because it was notified by reservation and they are at the airport. Alamo closed and I left without transportation at the airport. My rate for a rental in DR was surprisingly affordable when I booked online. I went ahead and purchased the insurance made available during booking. When I arrived at the rental counter, additional insurance was required with the rental, regardless of the policy I'd purchased (mistakenly believing it was part of Alamo's a la carte options). The car was not ready when we got there and we had to be shuttled to another location to pick it up. I had purchased additional insurance on Expedia that I was then told when I arrived at Budget that that insurance was not valid for Budget nor in the Dominican Republic at all, so then I had to purchase another whole insurance. The person assisting me was rude and argumentative. He had me signing papers without even telling me what I was signing for nor what the price was going to be that I was committing/signing to. When I asked him the price he pitched a big fight and acted very immature and like I was an inconvenience. The car I got had tons and tons of dents all over it so I then had to make sure that they saw every single one so that I did not get scammed even more.4.1

I rented a SUV from Europcar through carrentals.com I purchased the insurance package through car rentals and when I go to Punta Cana they told me that for the SUV I cannot have the insurance I bought, I must purchase Europcar's insurance package. They also said that they DID NOT have it in writing as to where that actual company policy exists. They also did not have any paperwork that showed the different insurance packages. It seemed very sketchy and when I asked if there was a supervisor to speak to the guy said he was the supervisor. My rental went from being $375 to almost $700 with the little insurance scam. I emailed Europcar's customer service the day it happened, after my 7 day trip I still had not heard anything and still two weeks later have not heard from them.2.0 Mediocre

They promised us to bring the car in Bavaro although, in the very first day they invited us in Punta Cana Aiport. After we made more than 5 phone calls, on European roaming, calls consisting of: wait a second, wait a second, and we were discussing with many, many operators, calling us on Terminal A, afterwards on Terminal B, and again on A and B, we found out that they didn't even have the car we ordered. We had to pay 70 USD taxi, round trip and also 282 USD insurance for no car. It was a disaster that destroyed our holiday. It's a huge mistake to have them as your franchisors. They don't speak English, it's a huge waiting time, no car, and the services are a disaster!5.2 Okay

Apperantly they do not accept the rental insurance I have bought thru Kayak (which Kayak recommended) so I was forced to buy their insurance which turned out to be more than the rental itself. Apparently theres an insurance and other fees that are not mentioned when booking that is required to rent a car. They photo copy your ID, passport, and credit Card too. So, at the other end, they are trying to charge us for dents that I have pictures of on my phone! The language barrier was a joke. I was given a price of $202 when I rented the car.I spoke to a Hertz Club Gold booking agent and they confirmed the price. Once I arrived at the Punta Cana airport: 1.) We waited over 45 minutes for someone to help us. There was nobody at the counter for 30 minutes. Then someone was who was helping another customer walked up, completely ignoring us. She was extremely slow and looked very inexperienced. Another Hertz representative showed up about 15-20 minutes later. 2.) The representative that helped us said that the price we received from the Hertz Club Gold member was just to reserve the car and the price of the car is actually more. I showed him my email receipt and he still said that's not what it shows on his screen. After that, he started adding all of these additional charges including insurance, gas option and a 28% tax. I told him I wanted to decline the insurance and gas options and he said that I could not an that I had to because it's a law in the Dominican Republic.I told him that none of this was ever communicated to me and I would have changed my travel plans to not use a rental car if I knew this was the case. I was stuck at this point and needed to pay for the car which now has cost me around $300 additional to the $202 I originally reserved. 3.) The car I was given was in terrible shape. Not only were there dents on the exterior but the inside was dirty and there were stains all over the seats. The driver side floor mat was not meant for the car. It partially covered the gas pedal and made it dangerous to drive. on top of all of this, the tires were bald and the car slide many times when I was braking. I have pictures of the dents in the exterior, floor mat and tires as proof. Additionally, I was only given the key to the car and not given the keyless entry module. This was absolutely the worst experience I've ever had renting a car and I was expecting much better service and vehicle since I was renting through Hertz. Also, the website and Hertz Club Gold representative should have explained the insurance and tax scams before renting the car. I will not be using Hertz in the future due to this experience.2.9

Reservation made sept 2016 for the ONLY vacation I get all year at Christmas. Confirmed six times - even before leaving LAX! Arrived and was told "sorry lady we have no cars". Without all the horrible details here's a f ew: - 3.5 hours begging/crying at counter they did not care although my reservation was acknowledged. - Christmas day, traveling solo and disabled, they did not care. - Supervisor got on phone, he did not care. - I had nowhere to go and NO transportation. - 3.5 hours later "we found a car it will be $800" THIEVES AND LIARS. I witnessed FIVE other renters on either side of the Thrifty rental counter told the same thing.Cons:
Learned from MANY locals, "they do it all the time". - my reservation was for 16 days $300. I would NEVER give that country one dime out of my own pocket although the USA has given them HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of dollars to rebuild. Their culture is deplorable. The car drove nice, but was a stiff ride in the back seat for two adults. We were able to get four adult and 6+ bags. The air conditioning worked well. It had enough power to manuver when needed.Cons:
The Hyundai Accent is a small "Full size" car. Very short leg space in the back seat. The outside of the car was clean enough, but the inside of the windshield was very bad. Refracted the sunlight to the point we had to stop and find water and towels to scrub the inside clean. I expected the required liablity insurance to be extra, but the required ups and extras almost doubled the original quoted cost. I was very nervious driving, fearing someone might hit me and we were warned of the consequences.4.4 Okay
