Bed & Breakfast Exterlaer - Antwerp - Building
1
9.7 Excellent (100 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Located in Antwerp, Bed and Breakfast Exterlaer is a 3-minute drive from Stampe and Vertongen Museum and 6 minutes from Wijnegem Shopping Center. The front desk is staffed during limited hours.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Beautifully restored house in a quiet residential area. Friendly owners. Nice breakfast with high quality ingredients. We did not sit in the garden as it was too cold outside but in summer it must be a lovely spot to have breakfast.
Cons: Minor comments: parking is for free but it might take some time to find a parking spot as it is located in a residential area. Curtains do not obscure the room completely so you wake up at sunrise.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Unbelievably clean tidy with a cool twisting mix of modern and old - very very cool
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent place, our second stay in this B&B was again superb. Quiet room, comfortable bed, excellent breakfast of off course a very warm and helpful welcome.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Decoration, hospitality, lication
Cons: Everyting! Complete perfection!!! And fantastic decoration & style, designed by the very talented host himself, perfect breakfast, beautiful garden, one of the greatest hospitality experience and close to the biggest natural swimming pond in Belgium, the Sportpaleis, the Riverenhof and the centre of Antwerp. I am a fan!!!!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owners ,who live in the the adjacent townhouse , were gracious and informative. They are artists who beautifully restored ed and furnished the property. The Exterlaer perfectly met our locational needs, and met our it "charm standard" . It is located in an early twentieth century neighborhhod with a diversity of architecture. Free parking was available about a block away.Parking in Central Antwerp is expensive and restricted. A tram, however is located a half block away ,and it provides easy access to Central Antwerp as well as the Osli Coglei (sp?) art nouveau district, Antwerpen is an overlooked city,
Cons: Nothing
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The owners were very helpful, made us feel very welcome. The bed was very comfy, the room was lovely. The breakfast in the morning was superb.
Cons: I had a problem with opening the front door with the code. The problem was not with the code itself but turning the knob of the door in the right direction.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The house and decor are very attractive and the rooms expansive. The location is close to the city centre easily accessible by No 9 tram. There is an excellent restaurant nearby. The continental breakfast is very comprehensive and tasty catering for all tastes. Daniel and Linda are truly wonderful hosts, nothing is too much trouble and they are very knowledgeable with reference to the local area and the city. If I should need to stay in Antwerp again then undoubtedly it would be here!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I think Bed & Breakfast Exterlaer is a guest house rather than a hotel. I would say that it is really cozy and welcoming. Interior inside is basically a home. There is even a cat that will come to say hello at a breakfast! The hotel is located in a quiet and nice area and there is a park nearby. There is a tram line No.9 that will take you to the center of the city in 15 minutes. The hosts attitude is very pleasant. In the beginning I was maybe a little bit confused by the attention from the hosts (that you normally don't get at hotels), but then I got used to it and realized that it is actually a hospitality. The only thing I could point out is that the house has wooden floors inside and when people walk and talk in the staircase one can hear it from the room. But this was not really a problem for me.

Pros: Very friendly hospitality, Vicky makes you feel at home
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very cute, small but with a unique atmosphere place. Outstanding service of the host Vicky impressed us a lot! Very convenient location : 5 min walking distance from main city attractions; tasty breakfast, welcome champagne bottle; comfortable bed, big enough for a married couple. Vicky is always ready to help and advise, she was so kind to drive us to a train station during huge weather storm. If you would like to experience not only convenience but a hospitality as from your family member, than we highly reccomend this place. We are a married couple from Moscow, who have traveled quite a lot.

Pros: Very hospitable and friendly host
Cons: Public transport not known
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast is great, perfect start to the day. The room had everything we wanted and more besides. The sparkling wine is a nice touch. Secure underground parking. Thank-you
Cons: For us, nothing.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The Yellow Submarine is a tiny cozy B&B. My room was clean and looked like I expected. The breakfast was fresh, delicious and there was plenty of food. Vicky is a great host - if you have any questions just ask her. If it’s possible, I’m sure she will help you. She helped me with my luggage as I was traveling with crutches, asked me how my days were, suggested restaurants, museums, alternative shopping areas... The B&B is located close to the MAS, also there are several nice restaurants and coffee bars in walking distance and a supermarket and a tram station as well. It’s also a nice part of town to just stroll through the streets and enjoy this beautiful town.
Cons: I guess you should be rather close with the person you travel with - if you aren’t traveling by yourself - as the bathroom is in your bedroom. :) Meaning there is no door. If you are very sensitive to noise this might not be the right place for you. It’s not loud but you can hear other guests on the wooden staircase (for example there were other guests with a little kid that was walking up and down the stairs and playing a bit, which I could hear) and I could also hear some noise from outside, probably people talking in front of a restaurant (?). Normal noise if you live in an apartment and in a city - so I’m totally used to it. But I could imagine if you are very sensitive to that kind noise or just not used to it, it might bother you.

Pros: Second time at this lovely hotel - great location, lovely staff and the bedroom looking out over the marina was excellent. Nice bar and will try the restaurant too next time - coz we'll go back, that's for sure!
Cons: The only minor minor remark would be that there was only one proper coffee capsule next to the coffee machine in the bedroom, the second one was decaffeinated so we had to toss a coin to see who got the decaff! But really not a problem at all.

Pros: This is a beautiful family run small hotel with a lot of taste, charm and individuality. It is situated in an Art Deco building. When you enter you feel an old world hospitality there, you meet the owners of the old school of hoteliers who care for you. Staff are helpful, served breakfast had everything one could desire, was delicious and everything was freshly prepared and of a high quality. Room was well appointed, beds were comfortable. The hotel is close enough to public transport to get into medieval Antwerp in about 10 minutes on the tram No 7.

We would definitely come back.

9.0 Excellent
Pros: - Proximity to the downtown (specifically the Meir) - The fact that you're basically staying in church - The private entrance - The flexibility of the cleaning staff - The ease of getting a hold of someone on the phone when you call
Cons: - The only thing was that via email it was a bit difficult to get a quick response back. - Be careful if you have someone old or unable to move because the stairs are very narrow, but that is only because it's a historic place. (so not really a con they can control)
10.0 Excellent

Great location, the famous shopping street is less than 10 mins walking distance and it is right next to a church, super cool. Unique building, it is a very old building with a nice design.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: A great standard, crockery, bathroom fixtures & fittings, comfortable very big bed! Lovely quiet courtyard outside, which would be perfect for a morning breakfast or evening drink. Collection of key very simple and handy too.
Cons: The stairs are very steep and narrow footing so didn't feel I could carry my suitcase upstairs. Having said that there is nothing that the owners can do to rectify this, but its mindful that if you have a heavy or large suitcase, leave it downstairs.
7.5 Good
Cons: The lack of the a door between the toilet and the bedroom
5.8 Okay
Cons: Everything was really tiny and looked way bigger on the photos. The stair are really steep therefore it‘s impossible to get the luggage to the bedroom, but there wouldn‘t be space anywhere... We wanted to sleep a little bit longer but they clean the appartment only till 11am.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: I had a great stay at Bernardin. A gorgeous property in a quiet location, yet close to the Historic centre. The owners were more than helpful and breakfast was delicious! I would definitely recommend.
Cons: I didn't have a problem with them, but the stairs are very steep! So for anyone that has mobility issues it would be very difficult and not recommended.

Pros: nice rooms, beautiful architecture of the rooms
Cons: terrible breakfast on a sunday morning, hotel fully booked, poor service
6.0 Good
Pros: The coffiee possibility, the ensizing mirror at the toilet, good beds.
Cons: My room was probably next to something that sounded very high, possible a air-condition fan? Luckely I had my earplugs so I could sleep anyway, but if I shouldn't have them I should have asked for another room -and that I feel should be no problem with the service I recived in the check in. I would like to have some more information, eg. regarding how/where to use the wireless and in the elevator some more info about the different levels - eg. here is the bar, breakfast etc.
6.0 Good
Pros: Brand new facility, nice furnishment.
Cons: Too small and hard pillows. Too soft bed.

Pros: - the modern style and use of space - room 32 has a great view because it's on the corner - the location is fantastic. 20 min walk to the centre of town, lots of nice places to eat and drink a stones throw away - check in after hours is really easy with the night box and pin - free parking really close to the hotel - nice shower
Cons: - it was quite loud at night. On the second night, we were both woken up at least twice by other guests. But that was more bad luck. - there was free coffee and water but not tea

Pros: Awesome hotel. Located on a cozy square with local bars and restaurants. Great and spacious rooms with a big bed and huge tub. Would recommend!
Cons: We read that the food bar downstairs was really good as well. We went there to get breakfast but had to wait over an hour to get our food. That’s too long to wait for breakfast, but the food was awesome!

2.5 Mediocre
Cons: I booked 5 rooms to accomodate foreign guests on my 50th birthday party. One of these guests (a member of European Parliament for the German Bundesrepublik ) contacted the hotel weeks before check in. He informed if dogs were allowed in the hotel . On the telephone a collaborator assured that this was not a problem. The day of arrival my guest could check in without a problem. Some time later he was informed that he had to leave te hotel without any assistance given for alternative accomodation My guest and his wife (who travelled especially for the occasion from Germany to Belgium) could not attend all the festivities. My guest felt that "he was treated as a dog".
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Was well located. The bar and decor was very nice. the pool area was lovely. Staff very helpful and assertive, I travel for business frequently and this was a very nice stay

9.2 Excellent
Pros: This is a beautiful oasis in the middle of bustling Antwerp. It’s a great place to stay if you want some quiet whilst still “in the heart of it”. The rooms are charmingly appointed and you may not want to go outside!
Cons: I would just flag that we went for breakfast on Sunday and the hotel had admitted non-guests for breakfast too, which led to there being no proper service for us as guests which was disappointing. No service (no coffee offered no hot food). Staff were not overly bothered by our complaint either. It’s a relatively small issue with an otherwise impeccable hotel - please carry on being fabulous!!

Pros: The location and no fuss
Cons: It took me awhile to realise the creepy noises of doors shutting during the night was in fact the top corner of a window banging every time the wind blew. When I did report it, it was doing it more offend and I was moved rooms. But the whole incident from reporting it to moving took over an hour. My dinner plans gone.

Pros: The location was really great and the beds were nice and big. The hotel had a good classy feel though a bit old school.
