The island does not have extensive public transportation, so renting your own vehicle is the best way to explore Terceira. Having a car will allow you to go to more rural parts of the region, and you can do so on your own time, without having to wait for a bus. Plus, it will make it easy to transport all of your luggage and any recreational equipment that you have, like a bike.

Driving in Terceira is relatively straightforward, as it is a fairly rural island and does not have too many cars. You will almost never find yourself caught in traffic, for example. However, many of the roads are known for being narrow, steep, and winding, so you will want to always proceed with caution and drive slowly in order to be as safe as possible. Parking is relatively easy, as there is not an abundance of cars on the island.

To rent a car in Portugal, you must be a minimum of 18 years old. However, if you are between the ages of 18 and 25, be prepared to pay an additional daily fee, as many rental agencies require this for young drivers. If you do not have a driver’s license that was issued by Portugal, you can still typically rent a car by either using a license from your home country or an international driver’s license. Keep in mind that if you do this, you will need to provide the rental company with your passport. Make sure to check with the specific company that you will be renting from, as requirements vary depending on the agency.
