Love the communal areas, and the restaurant. The check in staff are lovely. The door staff are lovely. Stunning interiors.
The location. The location. The location. I wouldn’t stay here if you are travelling solo. The level of homelessness right outside the hotel and more distressing the level of mental health issues you witness o the streets makes it a very emotional place to be when you step out the hotel. The hotel itself is beautiful and an oasis. But I just didn’t feel that safe and it was heartbreaking to see the level of neglect of people living rough in one of the richest cities in the world.
The rooftop bar is very cool and the staff were all great.
The local area, like a lot of downtown, has a huge homeless problem. I never felt unsafe, it was just distressing to see.
The design, staff, bedding, dining options within the hotel. The roof deck lounge is beautiful. The Aesop products and bathrobe are luxurious.
Location is good In relation to getting around the city, but the immediate surrounding area seems to be a hub for the homeless. This doesn’t deter me from wanting to stay here again - just good to know ahead of time.
I had the most unpleasant experience at Proper hotel. I booked a premium room, just to receive an e-mail from the property in the afternoon of the day I booked that my reservation was downgraded, without further detail or a return e-mail or phone. When I checked in, it turned out that instead of the premium room I am getting a bunk bed room (sic!), and the only option is to take it or the staff would try help me find another hotel. I was tired and could not search for other rooms so I accepted it. Needless to say, when I was checking out, reception staff tried charging me the original rate of the Premium room, and it took some negotiations to persuade them to charge me a proper lower rate for the worst room in the hotel. Ghastly consumer service.
Very polite and friendly staff, lovely hotel inside, very comfy bed and excellent toiletries to use. It was our honeymoon and the hotel brought us a gift which was a very nice touch. Excellent rooftop bar with some lovely cocktails! Try the warm one with tea in it and cream on the top. Yum!
Room was a little on the small side (although I guess this is common in San Francisco) and the area isn't the best but we didn't have any problems.
San Francisco Proper Hotel is one of the more exciting and sophisticated Starwood properties in the City by the Bay. Its central location, fabulous beds, and nice in-room amenities make the older neighborhood worth the stay. Even Forbes and Travel & Leisure say it’s the city’s hippest hotel.
The Proper is located on the corner of Market and McAllister streets in a historic flatiron building that was built in 1904. A stay at the hotel allows for convenient city tourism and is a quick walk to the BART and a short drive to the freeways. However, it’s only a short walk to the Civic Center, the San Francisco Symphony, the San Francisco Opera and the offices of several major tech firms, including Twitter.
Guests and locals alike come to the hotel for the variety and selection of bars and restaurants under one roof. The day begins at La Bande for a delicious and easy breakfast, Villon provides a great lunch, and Charmaine’s offers a nice dinner with panoramic rooftop views. Other on-site amenities include a fitness room and multiple meeting spaces with loads of convenient features.
The 131 ultrachic rooms and suites are tailored to fit the demands of a modern city traveler. The cloud-like beds are always the number one hit with guests and extras like curated minibars come in a close second. Smart-TVs and WiFi come standard, as does designer toiletries. Rooms range in sizes and amenities, and some offer sofas and bunk beds while Suites offer city views.
