Pros: A little gem! Yoko is the nicest host! Trust the comments - if you want a once in a lifetime experience in a guesthouse in Japan, stay here. The double bedroom was really nice too, plenty of space. Location is perfect - bike rental 1 min from the house and close to main points. I can’t recommend it enough!!!
Cons: Nothing!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent location, walking distance from Nara station and Nara Park. Yoko is a fantastic hostess. Kind, helpful (she lent us three umbrellas because it was raining), she makes her kitchen available to her guests. We are a family of five and we truly felt home there. We were able to share an excellent dinner with Yoko's Japanese guests. An unforgettable experience that I highly recommend to everyone!
Cons: Everything was perfect.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: We had such a great stay here! The facilities were nice and comfortable. It was very fun sleeping on futon mattresses on traditional tatami floor for us. The host, Yoko, was amazing and extremely nice and accommodating; she made us feel very much at home. We had such a great time talking with her. This stay will be a very special memory and one of the biggest highlights of our trip
Cons: It was a little bit of a walk from the station, though the location was still nice and in a quiet neighborhood. We were able to walk to all the major sightseeing spots from the guest house so having to walk a little further initially was well worth the location
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent Japanese style accommodation. The host Yoko is very friendly and provide whatever necessary information during our stay at Nara. We enjoy nice tea and chat about Japanese cultures.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Yoko was an incredibly friendly and personable host. Her place is clean and comfortable. Like staying with a good friend, you feel right at home. Her place is really well-located and within walking distance to the subway/train station. Would definitely stay with her again!

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Wonderful hosts, super friendly and made us feel so welcome. We stayed in the big traditional room with futon which was very beautiful and comfortable. Yoko was a super attentive host, and it was so lovely to chat with her and other guests. I celebrated my birthday there, and it was made even more special staying at oku guesthouse. Best accommodation of our trip, and truely wonderful experience :)
Cons: Nothing, it was perfect!

Tsukihitei Ryokan - Nara - Building
2
9.5 Excellent (125 reviews)
Overview Reviews
When you stay at Tsukihitei Ryokan in Nara, you'll be in the historical district, within a 15-minute walk of Kasuga Shrine and Nara Park. Free self parking is available onsite.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Traditional Japanese ryokan. The hospitality here is truly next level. Love their kaiseki cuisine. Location is also great. They offer exactly everything you expect from a genuine Japanese ryokan. And it’s located in a World Heritage Site, the Mt. Kasuga Primeval Forest. Walk down the hill, which takes less than 10 minutes, you’ll find yourself right at the historic center of Nara with Buddhist temples, shrines and a giant park with lovely deers! If you plan a fine experience at Nara, consider this place.
Cons: If anything, their air conditioning seems old and not very good at monitoring room temperature. But it does not make the entire experience less enjoyable. Also, adding one or two vending machines on the site selling drinks and snacks would be great.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The location, the staff and the Japanese cultural experience
10.0 Excellent
Pros: its my 2nd stay here. Everything is great, food, service and great scenery! A very relaxing holiday, thanks!!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Most amazing experience for our entire trip in Japan The place is magical, the people is incredibly kind. It has been a dream come true
Cons: Our stay was too short, didn’t want to leave
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful retreat in the primeval forest of Nara. Amazing dinners and excellent hospitality.
Cons: A bit more English proficiency would be nice, and a few less bugs who found their way in from the forest.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Really traditional and beautiful
Cons: Staff don’t speak English that well
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The ryokan was delightful, set in the beautiful forest only a short walk from the temples on the east side of Nara. The rooms are set out along a short covered outdoor walkway which is built in the forest, over streams and rocks, each room has its own special view of the forest, streams and sculptures. The traditional room with sliding screens and tatami mats with underfloor heating was very comfortable. The meals were served in traditional style in your own room, the food was delicious, generally many small course served and explained by the very helpful staff. Also really enjoyed using the two private onsen that were available.
Cons: I would have liked the forest to have had one or two more tiny lights so that you could enjoy the view at night
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Loved the main lobby area with high beamed ceiling and traditional fire place making it very atmospheric. Was also given a warm welcome. My room was very comfortable, a mix of traditional tatami mat with a more normal style of bed. Hotel very close to station so was able to walk/wheel heavy suitcase, also within walking distance of all the towns shops, bars, temples etc. I didn't have the evening meal but the trditional breakfast was good.

Kotonoyado Musashino - Nara - Building
5
9.2 Excellent (334 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Located in a World Heritage Site, Koto no Yado Musashino is Nara's oldest inn. A mere ten minute drive from Nara Station, it has been frequented by numerous writers and artists over the years, who favored the tranquility and comfort of the ancient capital. Here, guests can savor the sights, sounds, and tastes of ancient Nara. The twelve different guest rooms marry the traditional and the modern, and are equipped with televisions, individual air conditioners, and LAN Internet.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location is wonderful
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The location and staff are great! We loved the private tub in the room.
Cons: The price is super high in comparison to everywhere else we had the same type of experience.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was a terrific ryokan just on the eastern edge of the Deer Park at in Nara. It was well located to many of Nara’s key sites. The staff was extremely hospitable and was always helpful. The meals were excellent, both well prepared and delicious. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay.
Cons: I thought the ryokan was all round pleasant. There wasn't anything I didn't like.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Location and services.
Cons: Dinners were not as expected especially on the first night. The food was not up to the ryokan quality as we had been in other ryokans even though the other ryokans room prices were lower.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I like both breakfast and dinner, especially the Japanese dinner exceeds my expectations with lots of foods I never have. They all taste delicious. The inn is located by the Nara park which has great scenic view and is very convenient The staffs are very helpful and friendly. It's the first time I stayed in the Japanese ryokan. The experience is unforgettable.
Cons: Nothing I can think about it at this moment.
7.1 Good
Pros: Kotonoyado Musashino is an authentic ryokan set in the middle of Nara Park, it has a lovely location. The Japanese dinner was beautifully presented and a memorable experience. We did find some of the food at dinner quite challenging, but Japanese breakfast the following morning was great. Overall the staff were very friendly, helpful and professional.
Cons: Kotonoyado Musashino is a lovely old ryokan, but it is a little tired. Our room looked on to it’s own garden area but it needed a little tender loving care. The rugs in the seating and sink area had seen better days although I’d like to think they were clean. When we arrived the young girl who was to show us to our room selected a few yakata for me to choose from, later when I went to get dressed for dinner I found it was far too small, which resulted in the embarrassing experience of me having to ask for another. The lady on reception who came to my aid was great and she also helped me get dressed for dinner beautifully. Overall, we did enjoy our ryokan experience, but next time we’d consider one in Kyoto.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We have been to Japan several times with some experiences staying in Ryokan style hotels. I would say that Kotonoyado is one of our favorite, a very warm welcome, food, location, and the private bathroom. It’s such a privilage to walking with the deer at 7:30am with nobody in the park.
Guesthouse Naramachi - Nara - Bedroom
6
9.1 Excellent (282 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Guesthouse Naramachi, you'll be centrally located in Nara, within a 5-minute drive of Nara National Museum and Kofuku-ji Shrine. Featured amenities include complimentary wired Internet access, a business center, and complimentary newspapers in the lobby. Limited parking is available onsite.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location, close to most attractions, but still in a quiet neighbourhood
7.9 Good
Pros: Great location. very clean and everything you need for a short stay.
Cons: The bathrooms and showers are on the ground floor and all the rooms are on the first floor. The stairs are really steep so you have to make sure you are well aware while climbing them! The owners are very nice but I felt like going to their place and therefore disturbing them, the common area is open only until 10pm and I felt a kind of pressure to go to my room.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location quiet but close, lovely deluxe Japanese room, helpful hosts who give just the right information.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: We were only here for one night, but we were very happy staying here! Copious amounts of tea, a very comfortable common space with light music playing made it so easy to get work done. The building was old, historic, and beautiful. Our hosts were very kind and let us keep our luggage there after checkout.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Such a warm and attentive host, we felt very welcome and well looked after. Also loved the homemade signs, and staying in a beautiful traditional home. Very clean, with free hot water and lots of tourist information available!
Cons: We aren't used to sleeping on the floor but of course this is very traditional and the beds were beautifully made.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Although I was a bit hesitant about staying in a ryokan and sleeping on the floor, in the end I wish we stayed a second night. I literally slept like a baby! You don't really "sleep on the floor" actually, as there are 2 layers of very thin mattresses, so it is not that bad, and I personally like hard mattresses anyways. The couple managing the guesthouse is absolutely lovely and will make you feel at ease. The gentleman took his time to explain about his house which is 100 year-old and to show us around although we arrived a bit late at night. The room was absolutely gorgeous and comfortable. Heater worked really well so even in winter it is comfy! And the bathroom - although it is downstairs and to share - is practical. Just a few minutes walking to go to Nara park, or otherwise there is a bus that it is really to use to go around the city.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Kumiko and Shunju are special host! When I met them I had the impression that I had some japanese parents! They are really kind, nice and good hearted and it has been a stunning experience to stay in a real old style japanese house. Finally the atmosphere is enriched by the music of both some young and good violin players and Myazaki soundtrack. すばらしです!

9.0 Excellent (2,659 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Oak Hostel Nara is centrally located in Nara, a 4-minute walk from Nara Woman's University and 8 minutes by foot from Sarusawa-ike. Featured amenities include complimentary wired Internet access, a computer station, and multilingual staff.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: It was more of a hotel than a hostel, at least the double bedroom we got had a private toilette with a bath wich was very nice and clean. The bed was comfortable and the room was well equipped. The common area was spacious and there was a big elevator.
Cons: The staff was nice but a bit disorganised. The coffee they offer is not good, but it is free. The hostel is quite far away from a JR station so if you have the JR pass it is uncomfortable to walk with your lauggage up to the hostel (13 min walk).
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A three minute walk from Kintetsu Station. Very near Deer park on a quiet and charming pedestrian lane. Spotless and well run. Staff was helpful and friendly. Coffee/tea available for free. Highly recommended
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very good location, private rooms are a bit small but comfortable and at a very good price.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: value for the money, staff are nice and friendly.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This place was a gem! Warm and welcoming staff, free coffee and tea all day, cozy lounge/common area, clean rooms. Excellent location - just 1 min from the train station, super close to shopping, restaurants, convenience stores, and the deer park. The rooms are small (but pretty standard for Japan) and no-frills, but comfortable. You can also store your luggage for free, which has surprisingly not been the norm at a lot of properties we’ve stayed at throughout Japan.
Cons: No complaints.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Great location and very convenient price. Staff very friendly
Cons: small room (and toilet), although in line with Japan standards

Pros: The staff were kind and helpful. The room was wonderful, with big tatami mats, a spacious bathroom, big bathtub, fancy toilet, and even a massage chair. I loved the Kaiseki food. The onsen was relaxing and tattoo friendly. They even arranged a free guide for me to tour Nara, and gave me cookies to feed the sacred deer.
Cons: I wish I stayed longer :)

Pros: Extremely friendly staff, they tried their very best to communicate with you.

Cons: A little bit far away from the station but still okay
10.0 Excellent
Pros: 1) excellent reception upon arrival in cold Dec - hot towel & hot tea served. 2) check in smoothly managed with luggages already in the top floor room. 3) staff patiently explained facilities in the room, hotel & nearby attractions. 4) 1st nite dinner - staff surprised us with platter of mini cakes & fruits to celebrate our 33rd wedding anniversary. 5) breakfast & Japanese dinner package was excellent - breakfast have choice of western or Japanese. Early breakfast on Nara Marathon day. 6) took photo of us & presented photo upon check out. 7) reception & dining staff always friendly with a smile & always greet us.
Cons: Nothing I dislike. Enjoyed our memorable 3N stay here largely due to excellent staff service & very clean room. ARIGATO GOZAIMASU staff of Hotel New Wakasa.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Really easy to access from the station. Todai-ji is only about 5 minutes walk from this hotel.
Cons: They didn’t change the dinner menu for me even though this was my 2nd stay. Usually japan ryokan will change dinner menu for repeater guest.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful Japanese room and hotel in general, excellent breakfast, great public bath, outstanding service. It is when things go wrong that you can evaluate service. Because Japanese breakfast take a lot of time to prepare we are asked the day before the time of the breakfast. The second day we wanted ti have breakfast 1/2h earlier, but because of a misunderstanding the staff for breakfast did not know. They rushed to prepare us the breakfast in less than 10 minutes,
Cons: Wifi signal was slow which was not expected for this level of hotel. There was almost no hot water in our bathroom, this was not a big problem as wr used the public bath every day
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Friendly staff, japanese styled room, nice onsen
Cons: Location is quite far from the train station. No restaurant in nearby area.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The traditional Ryoken and Tatami beds were great! Staff were beautiful people, so friendly and helpful. The rooms are spacious and clean. We enjoyed our more traditional stay.

Pros: Very nice property with extremely friendly staff. The woman at check-in was extremely nice and helpful. I was thrilled with the location. Even though it's right by the station (you don't even need to leave the station to get to the entrance) the room was silent. The onsen was also very enjoyable. I would definitely stay here again.

Pros: Location is near to the train and bus station but not near town. We loved the onsen both indoor and outdoor. Room size is a little small but is well organised and clean. Thank you for the hand written card placed in my room.

Piazza Hotel Nara - Nara - Building
11
8.9 Excellent (2,352 reviews)
Overview Reviews
A stay at PIAZZA HOTEL NARA places you in the heart of Nara, within a 10-minute drive of Kofuku-ji Shrine and Nara National Museum. Featured amenities include complimentary wired Internet access, luggage storage, and laundry facilities. This hotel has 2 meeting rooms available for events.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Firstly I would like to comment that it is becoming quite expensive to stay in Nara. Just a couple of years back I could still get good deals but it's becoming more and more expensive with each passing year. Piazza hotel is located just adjacent to JR Nara Station, so it's quite easy to access. However the main attraction of the city - Nara Park, is located at almost 20 minute walk. The rooms were nice and clean. Bathroom was exquisite with rain showers. Staff were helpful. In all everything was great about the hotel except it was a bit heavy on the wallet.
7.0 Good
Pros: Modern and clean
Cons: Room is too small especially the window is for toilet not for the room
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Good location for bus and train connections Very nice staff
10.0 Excellent
Pros: All
Cons: Nothing
9.2 Excellent
Pros: everything. It is very nice room and very clean .
Cons: n/a
9.0 Excellent
Pros: This hotel was a fantastic surprise - it's sited very close to the JR railway station and from the outside is not a particularly attractive building (which always makes me a bit nervous about what's waiting inside), but our room (decorated in a traditional Japanese style with some of the most beautiful wallpapers I've ever seen in a hotel...) was superb. Quality amenities, very comfortable beds and quality bedding, and a fantastic bathroom with lovely toiletries. The location was very central within Nara, so we mostly walked to where we wanted to go - Nara Koen (park) was roughly 2.5 km walk away, but the walk to and from was packed with sights and even stalls on the days that we visited so you hardly noticed you were walking. We chose a room package that included breakfast and were not disappointed with the selection of food on offer.
Cons: It took us a couple of misdirected elevator rides to find the lobby of the hotel - but hey, that can add to the fun provided you're in the mood.... Better signage on the part of the hotel could help with this.

9.0 Excellent
Pros: Very good
Cons: No
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location is excellent. It is next to Kintetsu Nara station. So if you take the bus or train, it is easy to find it. The host and other guests were really nice. There are two private showers, so if you like your privacy that’s amazing. You can also have breakfast there. Since it is arcade adjacent, you can visit many different shops and find cool places/things. I found a great restaurant nearby, but the wait was an hour long. So I waited half of that back at the guesthouse! If I ever come back to Nara, I’ll definitely stay here again! Also, I didn’t hear any outside noise! So even though it’s close to a busy area, noise wasn’t a problem !
Cons: I didn’t really dislike anything.
7.9 Good
Pros: very good location, close to train station and Nara park
Cons: The sound insulation of the room is not good, I can hear voices from outside and neighbors.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very nice and clean, easily accessible. Small but sweet breakfast.
Cons: Lots of noise from AC from outside the whole night. Choice between instant coffee or cold coffee from the day before for breakfast.

8.8 Excellent
Pros: The staff were very helpful and friendly. We took a while to find the hotel as we can't read Japanese and didn't have wifi to use live maps but some locals helped us find it! It is a ryokan so the beds are futons and the table is low - likewise breakfast is in a dining room with sitting on the floor for a Japanese breakfast. The room size was very good and the air con worked well for a very warm day in Sekura season.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Tamaru exceeded our expectations. We loved the whole experience. From the gracious hospitality, the beautiful room , and Japanese clothes, I would highly recommend them. It was also very close to the temple and attractions. The best memories I have are having the authentic Japanese breakfast in the morning and soaking in a traditional onsen. It was a wonderful experience. I would stay there again
Cons: The only drawback to the hotel is it’s not very close to the train station. It is NOT within walking distance. It would take as least 28 to 30 minutes by walking .

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The old style house was comfortable to stay in. There was a nice homely atmosphere, a nice relaxing break from hectic traveling.
Cons: Nothing, I will certainly stay here again.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very clean bathrooms and toilets, I give +10 for that! Quite spacious . Beds were great. On this trip to Japan I stayed in hostels for the first time in my life (prefer hotels and bathrooms and toilet to be for personal use only) and honestly I was surprised to find such cleanliness and comfort in hostels.
Cons: Really nothing to complain about!
9.0 Excellent
Pros: A short walk to Nara Park and Todai-ji. Possibility to do a sake degustation with local sakes which was really nice. Futons were confortable and access to a kitchen and microwave. The breakfast was nice and balanced.
7.9 Good
Pros: The facilities of the hostel are very good.
Cons: The room was very very small and there almost wasnt space for the bags..
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very clean and traditional.
Cons: A bit noisy due to the wooden structure.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: We had a really nice stay-the owners/staff is so nice and helpful, they also supported us for or next destinations in Japan. we really liked or double room: spacious and comfortable. Nara Park ist quite near and the Guesthouse is a good home base for walking trough the beautiful alleys. breakfast and food at the Cafe was also very good! i would highly recommend to stay at the guesthouse.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Kumanabi is really charming and in a beautiful neighborhood on a quiet street. We felt really cosy and at home there. We loved the bar/cafe and did the sake tasting which is only 1000 Yen and it comes with three delicious snacks! The breakfast is also delicious and creative and only 6000 yen. You can also use a guest kitchen. The staff was really friendly and gave us some suggestions for dinner.
Cons: You can't really complain in an old Japanese house (the walls are made of paper - literally) but be prepared that you will hear other guests and the lights in the hall might wake you up. They provide earplugs and bringing a sleeping mask is a good idea too.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: walk in check in even i arrived at night time, breakfast is great. luggage still can leave after check in. ^^
Cons: wash room a bit cool

10.0 Excellent
Pros: We stayed 2 nights at the Nara Hotel in early Dec, having booked a run of the house which was excellent value. We stayed in the old part of the hotel. Our bathroom had been fully renovated. The location was perfect for exploring the park, which is very large. We're very glad we stayed two nights in Nara, there's plenty to see and the Nara Hotel, too, was lovely.
Cons: Nothing
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Really like the atmosphere of the 110-year old building! Nice staff too
Cons: Sound-proof is not very good
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very much.
Cons: Everything is fine.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: As often is the case in Japan, unfailing courtesy, superb customer service, spotlessly clean, attentive to every detail
9.2 Excellent
Pros: A hotel with a rich history, the first floor is in part just as much museum as hotel. Extremely high ceilings with windows to match that provided an incredible sunset view over the city. Enthusiastic, patient, and helpful staff.
Cons: We drove in, and what seems to be the main parking lot is downhill from the hotel itself, which may be a bit of a struggle for families with larger / multiple suitcases. I also found the room door a little difficult to open.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: the ambiance
Cons: nothing to complain about
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful and very comfortable, but expensive for just one night.
Cons: Just a bit expensive but that was due to the poor exchange rate we Aussies get. If you can afford it it’s beautiful!!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A grand hotel steeped in history in a lovely park location. The staff were very attentive and helpful. We had a Hollywood twin in the ‘new’ building which was a good size, with plenty of room, storage space and a nice big bathroom with bath. Beds were very comfortable. We had the breakfast buffet for convenience, which was really good. Really good to have the shuttle that goes to the both the JR and Kinetsu stations.
Cons: The meals there are expensive but it’s not far to walk into town with plenty of restaurants around.

6.3 Good
Pros: The location was splendid near the pagode and the parc, not far from the station and close to shopping streets. The room was clean and okay for our Japanese experience of sleeping on a futton. The breakfast was super with 12 variety of littles dishes. The owners were friendly.
Cons: The building's interior (stairs etc.) looked very old. I didn't even try the public bath therefore (I didn't go to see it). A friend found a large insect just before going to sleep :-(
8.3 Excellent
Pros: I like that I can see the Kofuku-ji Temple Five Storey Pagoda from my balcony.
Cons: I wish that they could clean the dust in the room especially on the lantern lamp.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Even though the hotel is very basic and modest, the staff were fabulous and went out of their way to make our stay perfect. The location is perfect! Just at the edge of the park, and our room had a great view of the Pagoda. We were greeted with tea and cookies in our room. When we were out of the room in the afternoon the staff arranged the futons (which were very comfortable). The Japanese breakfast was incredible. Such a variety of different dishes! Delicious miso soup.
Cons: The hotel is modest and the shower room was a bit run down.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Near the Nara park, temple, bus stop.

9.2 Excellent
Pros: - Amazing location - just in front of the pagoda - Very polite and nice staff - Very tasty traditional Japanese breakfast
Cons: - Overall hotel had 70's feel to it and was a bit dated
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Good location, great service. Place is old but respect the Ryokan type of establishment. Food was good, onsen is clean.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: If you want to experience a proper Japanese style accommodation, then Daibutsukan is a great choice. We were treated like royalty and have only good things to say about the place. The location is perfect - only 8 minute walk from Kintetsu-Nara station (out of which half of the way is shopping street under the roof). The famous Nara park is literally next door. Daibutsukan also has a decent onsen (public hot bath) on premises and abundant breakfast. Certainly a place to spend many nights for a relaxing holiday.
