It was wonderful! Very friendly hosts, every evening they gave us fruits. We had very warm and beautiful room on the first floor with comfortable futons and everything that needed for travelers. I've regretted that I didn't choose breakfast, because it was tough to find place to eat in the morning. I have only warm feeling about this place, will choose it for the next trip.
If you are looking for a more traditional, low-key but attractive place to stay in Kyoto, this is a good choice. Nice traditional ambience. The staff was helpful and friendly. Unfortunately, I had to arrive late so had less time to enjoy the hotel. One of the rare times that the hotel was worth hanging around a bit. Most Japanese hotels in this price range are functional and good but not all that appealing. Lovely entrance through a garden path.
Yadoya Manjiro (YM) is perfectly situated near several streets that leads to the admitedly touristy but oh-so-beautiful Higashiyama area. This strategic position allows you to go to Higashiyama any time of day and come back to rest whenever. Try waking up early and experience Hiyashiyama before the other tourists start to arrive - it’s magical, beautiful, refreshing, and it’s so wonderful to see the shops opening one by one, giving you a glimpse of the human side of the stores. Other reasons to love YM: - There are only 2 rooms, so it’s quiet and glorious for introverts like me! - Wonderful, simple, filling breakfast (if you choose to have one) - Dramatic entrance through the mini garden to the front door - Friendly and english speaking owner - Comfortable traditional Japanese room with delightfully enjoyable thick futon and duvet - Antique furniture and interior Mind you, per the owner’s own words, YM is not a “full” Ryokan. It’s more like a mini ryokan or a boutique airbnb - there’s no personal butler that caters to your needs, no onsen, but I think this is great if you want privacy.
The way to get there requires some “climbing”, as in the roads are quite inclined - OK if you bring small luggage, but may leave you out of breath if your luggage is large. I left my large luggage at Kyoto Station’s basement.
This ryokan (akin to bed & breakfast) was absolutely fantastic. The owners were attentive but not intrusive, and their kindness shone through. There was attention to every detail--fabulous grounds, decoration, and a kimono dressing (even as introverts, it was so much fun) . Cannot ask for a better location in historic Kyoto. Don't skip the breakfast--as good as any kaiseki, as good as any meal we had in Japan. I've been traveling for thirty years and this was one of the best experiences I've had.
Literally, nothing. It was perfect.
So nice and friendly family. The house is really clean and beautiful. Amazing position
