7.9 Good
Pros: Quiet and convenient location, a short walk to the hot water field in the town center. Room was clean and spacious for a Japanese property. Good value for money.
Cons: There were no dining facilities in this property. So no hot breakfast. They give you a bag containing a bun, cereal, juice, yogurt, etc when you check in. For dinner, take note that many of the town's restaurants close early, around 7.30 pm. There were no hot baths in the property.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The location, just 3 min walk to Yubatake. But mind you, on the way back is a upward slope Very comfortable single room.
Cons: Nothing much... Probably the only thing is the kerosene smell along the corridor as they using kerosene heater
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Near everything - 2mins to restaurants, onsen, shops. Friendly counter staff.
Cons: Walls were quite hollow. Could hear neighbours talking in the morning and night. Also parking space is very limited, I had to move my car out in the morning to let the car behind me out.
7.5 Good
Pros: Very close to city center, with parking available on site (need to inform hotel beforehand) Delicious home made breakfast Very clean room and fair size Room is equiped with fridge, kettle and hair dryer
Cons: Room get cold in the night, the kerosene heater is switched off after 3 hours (heating blanket available but too hot), so the room get cold in winter. Even this property is a good deal compare to other places, Kusatsu is an expensive place to stay (remote and limited choices)
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Lovely and helpful staff, 湯畑 (yubatake) literally around the corner - about a 2 minute walk. Close to free onsens and provided a very helpful map of these.

Cons: Everything was absolutely perfect. No room for improvement.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I liked the facilities- very clean and cozy. Their own onsen had great water too! Breakfast was excellent!
Cons: I had to do bit of a walk to the main onsen area- for like 10min which wasn’t a big deal for spring summer but might be an issue for someone trying to go there in winter with all the snow.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location of the hotel is great as it is just a short walk from the station away from the tourist crowds. The hotel has a wonderful homey feel. We had a large double room with a private bathroom which was enormous, just fantastic. We ate at the restaurant at the hotel both nights and would highly recommend. The owner, Taz, and his wife, were perfect hosts and nothing was a problem. Overall the staff, service and facilities were amazing and we had a wonderful stay. Highly recommend this hotel if staying in Kusatsu.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very traditional and typical Japanese onsen hotel. Definitely offers best experiences for tourists who wants to give a try on Japanese Onsen
Cons: Due to the winter time, the rooms are slightly overheated and too dried
7.1 Good
Pros: the breakfast was ok but the dinner is a little bit disappointed and the staff served too fast in less than a hour we have to finish the whole meal
Cons: the male receptionist's English is very poor, he does not understand English at all, the lady who took us in the room did not explain much then quickly ran away, she supposed explain how can we get the wifi, there is something we can see around this area and something she highly recommend for the first time tourist. I am totally disappointed about this ryokan.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything is so great and comfortable
Cons: Nope
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The ryokan was great! Staff was kind and spoke english, the room (we asked for a japanese style room) was comfortable and big enough for us, the ryokan's onsens were awesome, the food was very tasty. The location is perfect, very close to city center and other onsen in the city. Definitely recommend this place!
4.6 Okay
Pros: Private onsen however we charged on top of our already exhorbitant room rate for this.
Cons: This was not good value for money at all - there was nothing special or exceptional about the stay. I expected a far more luxurious, interesting, or beautiful stay for the price we were charged.
6.7 Good
Pros: Me personally, nothing! Fortunatly my Wife was ok with the place maybe because she is Chinese and more adaptable with deep Japanese style.
Cons: Only 1 staff can speak english!! Incredible when it is supposed to be a 5 stars hotel and according to the price!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very good service!
Kusatsu Kotodama - Kusatsu - Building
7
8.7 Excellent (530 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Kusatsu KOTODAMA is a Japanese-style guest house that is located just a 4-minute walk away from Kustatsu Onsen Bus Terminal. The property is also a 10-minute walk from Yubatake hot springs field. Free WiFi is provided throughout the property. Shampoo and hairdryers are available at the shared shower room. Several hot springs baths are located within a walking distance from the property. The on-site kitchenette has a microwave, electric kettle, kitchenware and some cookware that guests are free to use. There is a supermarket within a minute's walking distance from the property. Kusatsu Kokusai Ski Resort is 1.2 km away.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Kotodama Guest house was really cosy. Even though I went alone as a female, all the other guests that stayed there happened to be solo travellers as well, so we instantly clicked. It was EXTREMELY good value for the price I paid. I didn't use the shower room so I can't talk about the cleanliness of it, but everything else was generally really clean. There's a mini locker for all 4 guests to keep their valuables in. The staff explained everything in English (like places to visit, general house-keeping stuff etc.).
Cons: The location of the guest house was in the opposite direction of the touristy stuff (with the bus station as reference point), just meant more walking but it's not big of a deal.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: If you want to enjoy both Japan's simple lifestyle and really good quality hot spring in a fairly inexpensive way, Kotodama is one of the best hostels in my pleasant travel experiences. Its ordinal house is well cleanly and neatly kept with very simple accommodations and interiors. There are many public hot springs, which is free, and local people use them, around this hostel. If you stay at Kusatsu hot spring longer and enjoy such public hot springs, you must finally find your favorite one. As for me, "喜美の湯" (Kimino-yu), where is located A minute walk from Kotodama, is the favorite one!
6.7 Good
Pros: Good location
Cons: Noise and dust
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The bedroom is very comfy and nice.
Cons: None.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I liked the affordable cost for a clean tatami room. There was also a kitchen available for cooking your own meals and a grocery store across the street. The staff was very helpful and even kept watch over my suitcase before check-in and after check-out so that I could enjoy the onsen.
Cons: Nothing in particular!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Nice Japanese-style room with futon on floor
9.6 Excellent

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Really Japanese traditional style house, staffs helped me a lot. Other guests are also super friendly, gave me some tips to travel in Kusatsu. Highly recommend here.
9.2 Excellent

7.5 Good
Pros: Service was excellent. We were picked up from the bus station on arrival and delivered there on our departure; free coffee was provided in the lobby area; the onsen (hotspring) was really nice and hotel location most convenient to the walking streets and to the sainokawara park.
Cons: That meals (especially breakfast) should be provided; that there should be a reading light beside the bed; that there is better wifi connection instead of only at lobby area.

Pros: Staff is passionate and helpful
Cons: The pillow is not clean enough
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Onsen was nice, food was good, staff was very friendly and attentive, close to Sainokawara Park

8.5 Excellent
Pros: Great location, breakfast and dinner. Also, they offer me a room with the view of 湯畑.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Location is great. Shuttle service to the bus station (which saves the uphill walking from hotel to bus station). Nice outdoor onsen. Staff were great and helpful.
Cons: Buffet dinner and breakfast could be a bit better, as the food was ok (not bad, but not great).
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Location wise it’s superb and it has a nice shopping plaza downstairs of hotel, fantastic !!
Cons: The included dinner was a disaster!!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything else is perfect! THEY SPEAK ENGLISH! Location of hotel, very friendly staff, clean, nice onsen,....
Cons: Location of the room: if you're not in the main building, be ready to remember the way to your room. They explain it very good, but I had to take 3 different elevators and use access ways...
9.2 Excellent
Pros: In city centre and convenient to go every where, buffet dinner is very good
Cons: Hot spring is too hot to stay
7.1 Good
Pros: The room was pretty large and had a view of the town centre. The onsen was truly authentic which was the highlight of our stay. The internet WiFi connection was reasonably stable. Staff spoke decent English.
Cons: The dinner and breakfast were quite sad in terms of taste, although a wide variety of cuisine was offered. The hotel could have asked us before our stay if we would like to be picked up from the bus terminal (we found out that they provide shuttle service) or if we are interested to watch the traditional performance (tickets required). The room was uncomfortably warm despite the low temperature outside and the heater was not turned on.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Location was central to town. Great convenience.
Cons: Restaurant buffet quality could be a bit better.
Kusatsu Hotel Annex Watanoyu - Kusatsu - Bedroom
11
8.7 Excellent (69 reviews)
6.3 Good
Pros: Rooms are very spacious in ryokan style. Staff is helpful and friendly. Rooms were clean. Kusatsu is a small village, so everything is close-by.
Cons: The room had no bathroom! We had to shower in the showers of the onsen. Beds were very uncomfortable and hard. We both slept very bad. Rooms are basic and simple. Only one staff member speaks some English. They aren't used to welcome foreign tourists. The private onsen was a bit of a let-down. In the end we didn't use them and went to other onsen in the village. I had another look at the pictures on Booking and I must say they are far away from the truth. We booked this hotel to relax after some heavy traveling in Japan, but left disappointed. I would rate this hotel even lower, but we had the feeling most hotels in Kusatsu were a bit like this.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very good service private car travelling from terminal to hotel Cozy room with good view Famous Onsen
Cons: NIL
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Food was delicious. Room was modern and big. Service was warm.
Cons: Onsen was a bit old and small, but the foot bath was lovely and it is the closest to the public outdoor onsen
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hospitality from the host was wonderful. She welcomed us like we were old friends, parked our car for us and introduced us to kusatsu. The location was wonderful, only a few minutes walk to town centre and a pleasant walk to the main onsens and garden. We loved the decor of our room; a simple yet elegant design and very bright with large windows. Our room looks out into the street but we cannot hear any noise. It was a perfect stay. The yukata they provided is also of a higher quality than others we saw around town.
Cons: The was nothing we didn't like; maybe only the fact we stayed for one night instead of 2 and we didn't book dinner at the hotel. Everything was perfect.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very good service with famous Onsen”綿之湯”
Cons: NIL
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Wonderful Ryokan experience with very nice big rooms (western beds), perfect service and nice little Onsen. The dinner was delicious.
Cons: The Onsen is nice, but maybe a bit small. For us totally enough.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Nice quiet place and less than a 10-minute walk from the central area. Meals were fabulous, staff are kind and welcoming. Kusatsu's famous saino-kawara-yu open-air bath is within a 5-minute walk from this property.
Cons: Can't think of much.
6.7 Good
Pros: At a quiet location Kusatsu.
Cons: Could have provided breakfast and transport at earlier sessions.
7.9 Good
Pros: Miki san answers to all our requests promptly. Room and all facilities were clean. Comes with massage chairs, foot bath and even a small library with books and games.
Cons: Dinner wasnt available on a Wednesday. No pick up service from the bus terminal (although not really necessary).

Cons: Buffet dinner isn’t too tasty Prefer set dinner such as sukiyaki instead
4.5 Okay
Pros: new roomfacility
Cons: A two class society hotel (main building "3 stars" / maybe tower building "5 stars") Room: 1) the bathroom got no new facility "make-up" 2) the room comfort was bad (no carpet, no bedside table, no clock) 3) hairdryer and cosmetics are outside from bathroom, sometimes no refill 4) only coffee mugs, no drinking glass Hotel: 1) no multi language hotel, informations are not written in english 2) Buffet was sufficient but not very tasty and every day the same one 3) Pool is only open at "holiday season" also closed when outside 30°C
10.0 Excellent
Pros: - Very spacious, we ended up in a room big enough for possibly 8 people. (we had two toilets between the two of us) - Older bathroom style, however with the hotspring, we never used the bathroom. Toilets were clean. - Great little town to explore, short walk from the centre of the town. - Buffet dinner and breakfast were great, lots of choice. - Hotsprings were spacious and never overly crowded. - There was a drum performance every night. - We were very comfortable. - Great staff.

Pros: Location in the middle of town, very nice. Very great staff, clean and beautiful facilities. The bathes are small, but nice. There is a private bath for family.
Cons: Breakfast and dinner was okay. But with so many places to eat just outside, it wouldn't hurt to pass on the meals here.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Great location. Great customer service. Walking distance to all the main sightseeing parts of Kutsatsu.
Cons: Rooms are small. Although it says it's for triple occupancy, it is very tight for 3. Good for one, ok for three, but definitely not for 3. Room has only toilet and sink. You have to use the common bath. Indoor onset was too hot for my friends and me.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The whole complex itself is really worth going to. We stayed at one of the cottages, which was amazing. I totally recommend this to families and big groups. It is close to Kusatsu’s main tourist spots, and there’s always someone willing to take you to the town center.
Cons: Everything was perfect.
7.5 Good
Pros: well staffs are nice
7.5 Good
Pros: the hotel staff very nice and helpful ; good location, close to the village; the hotel bus is amazing -you call anytime and in 5-10 min. they’ll pick you up and take you anywhere close to hotel or back to the log cabin. we did not use the public onsen, so the staff made a reservation for us at a different hotel with private onsen rooms; our log cabin was very spacious; huge whirlpool tub; check out 12:00;
Cons: Not the expected “Japanese clean” experience; walls and windows not sealed, so the cold wind comes through. At night, we could feel it blowing in from every corner. Because of that, despite the good working floor heating, still hard to reach the desirable temperature. Old cabin with cracks and holes in the walls. In December, with the outside temperature -1-2 C during the day, we saw a couple of spiders and other crawling insects inside the house. They did not bother us, but still kind of unpleasant experience. No international tv; small cooking top for one pot only; small refrigerator; the hotel dinner buffet for the weekend price of 5400 Yen: we decided to go for it because of the crab legs, wich were very watery and cold.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Loved everything - from great breakfast, to choice of onsens, walks and activities, shuttle to town, smiley faces of staff, beautiful surroundings, quiet restful nights. Can’t wait to come back.
Cons: A small uplift would be good
7.9 Good
Pros: Onsen
Cons: The cottage is quite far away from the building that has onsen. You have to call the staff to pick you up and send you. By the way, onsen is so good and staff are very helpful.
7.5 Good
Cons: Very hard beds. Old and a little tired.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Service & restaurant
Cons: Nothin
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Hot spring , the hot spring is so great!! I felt so relax when I took hot spring. And employee are very kind and sweet ! I thought I’ll visit there again.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It looks a bit dated but it is well maintained. Limited English spoken but staff will make an effort to make themselves understood. The food was excellent. Very big buffets for breakfast and dinner and there is a lot to choose from (mainly Japanese food). The room was not super big but reasonable size. I am sure there are bigger options for more but it was big compared to what you can get in Tokyo for the same price. Good size and comfortable beds (western style). 2 onsen to choose from. The main one with an outdoor pool/bath. Overall very nice stay.
Cons: It's a bit outside of town but there are frequent shuttles that will take you to the bus terminal, in the centre of town (4-5 minute rides only) or it is an easy 15-20 minutes on foot.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We stayed in village look like house is very nice
Cons: Kusatsu Village Hotel is all in one staff is nice and so many activities you can chose nice experience

Cons: The whole place is dated and old. Facilities such as table tennis needs additional charge. The room 329 is horrible. Everything seemed dirty and not cleaned.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: We upgraded to Japanese restaurant, where service and food are excellent. Location is near the skiing place with free shuttle service every 15 minutes in the peak time. The hotel also provide free shuttle to and from the bus terminal and central place, every convenient.
Cons: Nothing.
7.5 Good
Pros: Accessible location and close to other sight seeing points
Cons: Dinner arrangement, I have to wait for more than 30 mins to enter the restaurant for dinner. If the 1st session is overbooked, it is better to advise the customer to join 2nd session.
10.0 Excellent
Cons: We didn't know half the ski runs haved been closed for over 1 year due to volcanic eruption.
7.1 Good
Pros: Onsen and food good.
Cons: Room is old and dirty
9.6 Excellent
Pros: We had a great room with 2 beds in 6th floor with additional Tatami area for our 3-year old. The Onsen area is really nice. The dinner and breakfast included was buffet style in a big size restaurant which has been renovated recently. The fruits were delicious - the food available was not amazingly delicious but perfectly sufficient for all of us. Western and Japanese choices to choose, also good selection for toddlers. The shuttle bus to the city center is very convenient.
3.8 Mediocre
Pros: This was supposed to be a week of skiing with the family (2 adults and 2 kids) as part of of longer Japan trip but we left after three drays. The hotel was supposed to be 4 star recommendation with half board and kids friendly. It also offered a choice of restaurants and is close to the slopes. So all sounded good. The location is good and indeed close to the slopes. The Onson (private and public is ok). Parking is free and available. These are the pretty much the only few positive points I can have.
Cons: Here is a short summary of the bad things which left us leaving early (after a longer discussion that they wanted to charge us for the full stay): - Hotel is not at all international standard at all: very few people who speak English, very old rooms, poor very overall condition of the estate - The hotel is expensive but everything is still charged extra: e.g. the use of the pool is chargeable for hotel guest (!), half board is only for the buffet dinner which is overcrowded and everyday exactly the same food, even table tennis cost money - The rooms are a disaster. They are small, old, unkept, the Tatami Room which was supposed to house a family of 4 does not allow any luggage space and the Tatami area will be used for Futons for the kids. The furniture is run down and overall condition is poor. - The bathroom are 1970s plastic shower cells similar to a camper, which do not even allow anyone to stand straight (floor to ceiling around 170cm). They are outdated, run down, super small and not basically not usable. The hotel told me, I am supposed to use the common shower facilities at the Onsen and not the bathroom in the room? - The pool is old, under reno and completely run down. In summary, I can only warn to stay here. Overpriced and way below standard. I have attached a few picture to give you an impression.
