Top tips for hiring a car at Harare airport

  • Harare Airport is also known as the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport (HRE). It is Zimbabwe's largest and most bustling airport. You'll be just a 20-minute drive from the center of Harare and less than 30 minutes from Chitungwiza when you land at this airport. From the airport, you can take a taxi to the city. Taxis in Harare, however, are quite expensive. Therefore, ultimately, it will be cheaper to rent a car. Renting a car can also make it easy to get around Harare and its surrounding communities. In the end, with a car hire, you'll save money and you'll be able to set your own travel itinerary.
  • At Harare Airport, you can rent a car from an array of car rental agencies including SIXT, Avis, Budget, Europcar, and Sunnycars. The rental car kiosks are conveniently located between the domestic and international terminals. You will also find it easy to walk to the rental car parking lot which is right outside the terminal. Each agency sets its own hours, but most are open from 8 am to 8 pm daily.
  • You can return your car rental at Harare Airport after hours with the permission of the agency. If it is approved, you can simply park your rental car in the rental car parking lot, lock the car, and drop the key in the dropbox inside the terminal. Harare Airport car hires often include free add-ons like roadside assistance with their rental car contracts. Use KAYAK to book your car rental online. With its easy-to-use search feature, you can price rental car add-ons such as additional drivers, GPS, XM radio, or infant/toddler/booster seats.
  • With the signing of your rental car contract, you'll have to show the agent your driver's license. This has to be a valid driver's license that includes a photo of you. A photocopy or digital copy will not be accepted. You don't have to have a Zimbabwe license to rent a car at Harare Airport. If you're from a foreign country, you just need an international driver's permit. The agent might also ask to see your passport before finalizing the paperwork.
  • Book your car hire at Harare airport at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price

Overall experience was very positive. Collection was straightforward, I was given a car upgrade (Thank you) and car drove very well. Drop off also straightforward, however customer support attendee could not give me a receipt to show my cash rental payment. Left for my flight not 100% sure if my credit card deposit would be refunded in full. Still pending 4 days on but that’s not to say it won’t be released as up to 7 days. Also no official confirmation email stating rental has ended - just the paperwork from the airport.
