Cons: Smoking in the restaurant. People chain smoked for our whole meal! This spoilt the taste and atmosphere for us and I got a sinus headache. Had we realized we would have organized to eat elsewhere, which still would have been disappointing. There was no inside area set up. This discriminated against non smokers and it is about time the restaurant takes that into account.

Cons: The reception staff were very blaze, preferred to chat between them and handling paperwork rather than speak and exchange with us. The valet service: we waited very long, unecessary painful for this 5star hotel. It is not a 5star place, not sure we can recommend it further. Room service phoned back after 30minutes from ordering, saying they are too busy - so cancel the order for our daughter. I appreciate if the hotel management replies to this feedback, however it is too little too late.

Pros: The hotel was very nice, worth the cost. The staff were friendly. Parking is an issue, weekends are free, but weekday you can pay on pay and display. The manager Francesa was very helpful, I had booked a room with a terrace, when saw the room there was a wall that covered the view, which was disappointing, they explained they gave a King size room as I had a child. To compensate the view, they removed the parking charge. This was very kind of Francesa who was very apologetic.

Cons: Given this is a 5-star hotel I was pretty shocked to realize there was only cold water available in the first morning of my stay, which translated in a cold shower and shave. This was my first experience of such a case despite having attended about 150-200 business hotels all over the world. I was even more surprised to see that the hotel had not a single iron available, urging me to attend the congress without wrinkled shirts. I think that such problems (negative experiences) can always happen (although I have to admit it was a bad coincidence to find out about 2 uniquely experienced grievances during my first morning). However, the way how the gentleman at the reception handled my surprise & complaint about these 2 grievances was by far the worst part of my experience. My conviction is that a 5-star hotel should definitely try to make up for such a disruptive guest experience and offer a free massage, drinks or another service such as free ironing. The location of the Melia hotel within Genova is ok but far from outstanding. The hotel has been kept clean and offers a standard breakfast. IMO the breakfast does not meet the standards of a 5-star hotel.

Cons: The old elevator is very (VERY) noisy. It's impossible not to hear it when in your room, even if you are in a room that doesn't face the hall. I asked in my online reservation that I wanted a silent room, specifying "far from elevators", and while I wasn't put in the hallway, I did not get the most "protected" room either. When asked (approx. 1 hour after arrival), the receptionist said that I should have asked before, because at the moment no more rooms where available for check-in. All in all, every other (good) feature of this hotel is overshadowed by this single shortcoming (many other reviews complain about this), which should probably push the managers to do something (but I read that they just renovated it...). The facilities are old but adequate, and all the small details showed you this is a quality hotel with good history. The location is wonderful! Just across the street from the railway station but it’s not noisy. Easy access to the castle, port, museum... The stuff are professional, polite and efficient, just friendly enough..

I emailed in advanced asking advice on an English speaking Physiotherapist. The reply I got didn’t just give me a name but preempted my next move by providing a possible appointment time as well. All booked with no stress to me and within walking distance from the hotel. When we arrived I felt like we were coming home. All of the staff were lovely, in particular Nicole and Cinzia. Cons: There was an annoying buzzing heard in my room. Especially in the corner of the room where my pillow was. Must have been something in the hallway or neighbouring room. Had to sleep on the other side of bed so that I would hear it less and manage to fall asleep. Although everything else is good, it is a bit pricey for such a small room with rather old-fashioned furniture.

We appreciated the welcoming staff, the clean and spacious room and bathroom, and the very rich and high quality breakfast (great price of 8 euros per person). The hotel also has a fitness centre and a spa. It is located in a romantic area of Genova, and the room had a great view over the city roofs. The area around the hotel is safe, full of restaurants and cocktail bars, and well connected to the Genova railway station Parco Principe through the bus and metro.

Cons: The shower was tiny and the door was so small I am glad I could get in but many people now days would not. The view was a wall so we kept the roller shutters down, felt like solitary confinement. The lift was about 1mt. square so two cases and two people was a squeeze , lucky we do not suffer from claustrophobia. Trying to even call the lift was a joke as every time on the first day it was full when it arrived ,that means three people. We ended up using the stairs!

The hotel is at a nice place (historical center and marine) but everything is so dirty all around. Most of the people around are immigrants and you feel really unsafe.

The location is fantastic, central to explore all of Genoa’s sites, and right next to the train station where you can get a shuttle to the airport and trains to other local towns such as Camogli, San Margarita and Portofino. The continental breakfast was very satisfying for the value.

Cons: The location was good for the station but a fair old walk through some pretty sketchy backstreets to get to/from the harbourside area. For what it's worth, the hotel's restaurant recommendations turned out to be a bit pricey for our tastes for what were more like cosy, hurried little trattorie then anything resembling fine dining. I don't think there was a lift, which would have been preferable. The air-con was a bit noisy and so was the street outside - at some inexplicable hour someone seemed to be pressure-washing the awnings of a neighbouring business below our window. The room, while clean and well-equipped, was quite small, in light of which the price could have stood to be 10-15% less than it was.

I had a triple room ( single occupancy) but it looked more like a small apartment. Once I opened the door there was a small corridor with a big wardrobe and two doors (one to the bathroom and the second to the bedroom) Although the bathroom was very small, it was new with a very nice shower (water massager included) and a good hair dryer (which normally isn't the case). The bedroom was spacious, the bed super comfy and it even had a small cot (if you travel with a small child that would be very useful). Although its adjacent to the main street (via XX settembre) it was very quiet. For what I paid it was a real bargain and I'd def book there again!

So, they have little flexibility for the check in. Also I have been waked up by the staff who was discussing very loudly with a client. I didn’t like how they treated the client. The walls are very thin and you can here everything from other rooms.

Pros: The hotel was really close to the city centre, just walk straight via a sweet park. The train station is approx. 2 min. walking from the hotel, easy to get it. The bus stop is also very close, Bus No. 31 takes you to the most beautiful beach, but you can not hear any noise from the street. The hotel staff is so polite, the check-in/out process went quick. THE BED! I usually spend many nights in different hotels, but this bed was so comfortable. The bathroom was clean. The towels are new, clean. The breakfast was amazing. Good selection, many waiters and waitresses were around the tables. Amazing view from the dining hall, from the room, pity that was a road-work exactly in front of the hotel. The garage is extremly safe, large places for the cars, easy to park in it. I will go back there. Thank you for the hotel employee effort.

Cons: Worst experience as per the standards of 4 stars. Few comments!: 1. Same dishes in breakfast every day which is not ideal for the guests willing to stay longer. 2. Rooms are not soundproof and could clearly hear the voices from the other rooms and bothered my sleep a lot. 3. Crapy electrical wiring system. No socket near the bed and was only able to find one close to the tv which was also lose and hard to connect. 4. Had to call the reception for the room shoes and toothpaste/brush etc. These are basic things which should be there when guest checks in. 5. Very easy for water to come out during shower which makes whole bathroom wet all day, 6 You will be charged with 2 euros/per day as city tax upon check out, which was not told during booking,

When confirming my reservation, they told me that parking is not reservable, but available for 15 €. Onsite we found their parking is full and you can't leave the car on the street. Pros: The hotel staff were helpful and friendly, checking us in a half hour or so early and answering all my tourist info queries kindly. Location was great for attractions at the modern port (couldn't be closer to the wonderful Aquarium) with other maritime and museum/gallery activities pretty much on the doorstep. Stay represented good value: we left it late to book, were pleased to find ourselves walking distance from so many sights and found buses handy and Genoa cheaper than other cities overall. The old town is right on the doorstep with its small winds and alleys leading up into lovely wide streets with great views and open piazzas, cathedrals and grand palazzos but above all the feel of a Italian centro storico. I was surprised by how close the main 'shopping' streets were to the hotel. This is such an attractive city with friendly people and loads to see, do and eat! Hope to come back to visit some of the areas missed during our 5 night stay - really enjoyed the walk along to Boccadasse. Didn't have time to visit the golden galleon right next door to the Acquario as we went to the Galata Museo del Mare instead. This has good exhibits with interpretive material about shipbuilding, maritime navigation, famous characters such as Colombus, life at sea and also migration out of Genova over several centuries. The focus not just on immigration to the US but also to Brazil and Argentina was fascinating, with the old photographs of family and working life plus stuff on emigrants' social lives through food, music and dance. Being treated as a new arrival at Ellis Island was a nice touch. The section on sub history finishing up with the simulated school for submariners was great fun and playing with the instuments, code-breaking etc. and making radar go ping was my favourite bit, along with the sounds/video materials of navy lads going about their work.

Cons: The double bed was two singles pushed together. One side of it was a lot firmer than the other, so my side (!) was not good for my back and a bit uncomfy. In fairness to Hotel Acquario, however, I didn't complain or ask to have it changed.

Pros: We had a nice new room on the second floor with bide and everything necessary.
Cons: When we came home from a long day out and wanted to take a shower before going for dinner there was no hot water which was very uncomfortable. We were told they are working on fixing it which happened by the time we arrived back after dinner. It was very unfortunate that we had to take our shower with cold water.

Cons: Bad neighbourhood, noisy, a bit scary in the night, espacially when we arrived late and we were looking for the hotel, and we were the tourists among the groups of locals...I was more scared than my boyfriend, so probably not recomended for female travelers.
