Breakfast choices were great, bed superbly big and comfy, loads of powerpoints and USB sockets, modern.
Lack of lift to 3rd floor. Non-responsive phone service confirming late arrival, reception unmanned at times despite 24/7 promise. Not self-contained site split across 3 neighbouring properties so have to go outside to access room, reception or breakfast.
Convenient location a short walk to the main attractions.
KM Central (5/10) Initial impression is disappointing. I was also dismayed to find this is converted student accommodation, which no-one in the reviews seems to have mentioned. Weird tiny reception desk full of students and quite separate from the building housing the actual rooms. No car park onsite but a substantial discount, close to 50% off, at the local NCP (5 mins drive / 10 mins walk away). Rooms (7/10) Size : Very very small but doable if you are not spending much time in them. There's an open clothes rack and a desk. TV is quite large for the room. However no fridge or safe box. Everything seemed spotlessly clean. Bed (8/10): The best part of the room. The mattress was substantial and soft-firm and we slept well on it. The bed is also a good size, at the very least a Queen. AC / Heating (6/10): None but the heated radiators worked well (and heated towel rack) and the window opened to the rear for fresh air. Note issue raised above though. Bathroom (7/10) : looks new and clean. The shower pressure and water temperature were very good. The sink is tiny and a weird shape, made to fit into the small room, ditto the cramped toilet. Towels are soft and sufficient. Actually the bathroom works really well despite its size and initial appearance (shower looks great even on first view)! Location (8/10) : View to the rear overlooks a loading bay. Yuck. However the hotel is well located just a 20 mins walk to Edinburgh Castle, 6-7 mins to the Royal Mile etc. etc. Breakfast 7/10 : In a building located about 20m from the actual accommodation - so you'll need an umbrella if it's raining (as we did). An OK selection of cereals (muesli for me) plus fresh fruit, cheese, and a cold cuts selection plus there were many options for a quality cooked breakfast (taken to order). Staff were friendly and efficient.
Carpeted floors could do with changing as could those on the stairs. No lifts means heaving heavy baggage up two floors (4 flights) and a weird double door system, opening in on themselves, at the top of the stairs means squeezing suitcases through them requires a degree in engineering, whilst the very strong spring hinges on the doors do their best to decapitate or otherwise injure you! However with no A/C when the room got hot the only option was to open the windows - opening literally right by your head when sleeping. I didn’t enjoy at all the strong, cold, breeze blowing on my delicate little bald head! Noise 2/10 : None from the road at the front or from other rooms. However the dairy loading bay at the back had noisy trucks pulling up from around 06.00 onwards. The reversing alarms and sounds of loading could definitely awake / disturb some people (us! On both mornings of our stay).
It was clean, quiet, modern and comfortable with very helpful staff.
It is down a quiet back street, which was a little disconcerting to walk at night.
clean, comfortable and good location
being woke up early each morning by delivery trucks at back of hotel.
