Petrol station right outside the airport for an easy re-fill at the end :)

This all depends on one’s need. We rented a smaller car as we only drove down the Algarve coast. The southern highway is easy and free (as of last year ) and people drive in a respectful manner. It’s very safe .

Driving in Portugal is mostly easy and uncomplicated. Just abide with speed limits and understand the traffic circles protocols then you should be fine. Smaller cars are BETTER! Cost and parking dictates. Many of the highways are toll roads and may quickly run up unplanned costs. If not in a hurry avoid toll roads and use alternatives. Fuel is expensive E1,76 per litre and 10c more than in Spain. Parking in Portugal is less regulated and many times for free but paid parking zones are prevelant in high volume tourist sones or near the large blocks of accommodation units. There are some recharging points for E cars but not enough to warrant taking a long trip ie more than 250km.

KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Faro
Take a scenic drive in your hire car along the coast of Faro. Along the route you’ll run into numerous beaches, golf courses, and fishing villages. There is so much to do and see in the region when you have a car including partying at nightclubs, dining at fine restaurants, or having fun at the amusement park.
Algarve is a popular tourist destination in Portugal. Most travelers to this region opt to fly into its capital of Faro because it is the largest and closest airport. Faro International Airport has several hire car companies onsite including Avis, Hertz, and Enterprise. With their offices being a short walk from the terminal, you’ll find it quick and easy to rent a car for your vacation.
In Faro, note that many of the freeways have toll stops, so you should become familiar with the fees. Because you don’t know your way around yet, keep to the right when on the highway to stay safe and allow others to pass you with ease. Finally, be aware that drivers in Portugal do not use their turn signals. Consequently, someone could turn quickly in front of you so you should always drive with caution.
Although it is a main city, Faro has a population of less than 70,000. Therefore, it does not have a lot of traffic. Its busiest times for driving, however, are between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m., when residents are commuting to work, and from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., when they are returning home.

Which hire car agencies are at Faro airport (FAO)?
Not enough staff on check in for car, only one staff behind counter. On returning the car only 2 staff dealing with pick up and drop off customers which took some time. Not staff being slow, some awkward customers asking irrelevant questions.
I purchased the extra coverage through kayak and when I got there they informed me that there was no coverage available through the booking, They then charged me an additional $300 euro for insurance gas deposit! I will never use this service again! No wifi in office or shuttle service available either,
Staff backed up with a lot of customers from airport, not so helpful in expediting line of waiting customers promptly. Car was good. Drop off had quick service.
Chose the SUV option with a Qashqai in the image which we paid extra for as I would expect to do. We were given a KIA Stonic. Tye boot was tiny and made our journeys very uncomfortable. We have x2 children, x3 large suitcases and a pram and this car was not practical at all. It is over 100litres smaller than a Nissan Qashqai. Not happy with the vehicle we received at all. Thanks

My friends and I rented 2 cars for a joint vacation. When we found out that our flight would be delayed, my friend called the company on his and my behalf, providing both reference numbers and informing us that the flight was delayed. The employee agreed to wait an hour longer for an additional 40 euros per car. This is already strange, because is waiting one hour for two cars to be issued more than waiting one hour for one car to be issued? The employee gave us information that the office is open until 2200 and can wait until 2300 for the additional 80 euros. Interestingly, I found information that the office is open until 2300, so why should we pay extra? Unfortunately, our flight was delayed much longer because we could only fly 18 hours later. When we found out about it, at 2145 we immediately called the office to arrange a pickup at another time, but no one answered the phone. Did the employee finish work early, or maybe he had the numbers identified and decided that it would be more profitable to charge us with additional costs? Moreover, if we rented a car on a certain date, the car should be locked for us and available only to us on that date. And not that if we do not pick up the contract on time, the company may cancel our reservation and take our money. And probably rent our cars to someone else immediately. I know that the company has such conditions and can take full advantage of them, but our delay was not due to the fact that we forgot to pick up the car, but because we needed a plane to travel 2,500 kilometers, which unfortunately had a significant delay. The company will probably give a damn about us and be happy that they charged us for cars that they could have immediately rented to someone else. All we will have to do is respond to an e-mail request for information as to whether we are satisfied with the services of this company. Please guess whether we were satisfied? Avoid this company as you will lose your time and money.

My experience was not good. We hired a car to drive from Faro to Vila do Bispo which is quite a distance. The car started having engine trouble about 40 mins out from Faro and then eventually stalled on a motorway requiring a tow truck and a taxi to take us to our final destination. We were told a car would be brought to us the following day but no such luck! Had to wait over 2 hours for a person to send another taxi. Lots of needless rudeness from the customer service desk. Had to return to Faro to pick up another car. Not impressed overall. Second car was luckily ok but the difference being that the first one had no apple car play and the second did. Seems like they don't even give comparable cars.

The price wasn’t the same. At collection the staff asked for additional money, factored in extra charges that I wasn’t initially made aware of. Would not use again ever.
