Cons: No shower facilities, but there is lots of onsen in the area.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The space and the historical architecture. The handy location - close to shops/onsens/public transport/tourist attraction. A very obliging host. And the lift to the ferry the next day was greatly appreciated.
Cons: A few hooks to hang clothes. Some plates/bowls/cutlery to make use of the microwave. These are minor issues and we manage well without them for one night.
7.0 Good
Cons: It is traditional Japanese style. As older people the one thing we would have liked would have been back rests when sitting on the floor.

Pros: The hotel was extremely clean. The staff were so friendly and did their best to help all of us. The hotel is located in a quite area and very close to Beppu park. It takes about 5 mins walk to Beppu station. Lawson is 2 mins walk from the hotel. Unfortunately dinner were all booked out so we didn’t get to try. The hot spring are very nice too. Would love to go there again.

Pros: Our flight was delayed for hours, when we arrived, the normal dinner time was over. Tokumoto was super nice to us, served delicious dinner and took great care of us. We feel like at home while we stay there. We will like to revisit in future.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: I really prefer the traditional japanese inns called ryokans to conventional hotels but hanna beppu have managed to combine the traditional personal experience in a hotel environment! first of all as in all the photos the place is stunning and the japanese are the only people who know how to balance style and function! I felt looked after but also had freedom to walk around in my lounging yakata all round the hotel to meals and to their delightful onsen! the meals were lovely especially the gourmet dinners using all the local seasonal delights! there was staff who spoke english that was so helpful for me as well! I went there to visit all the hot springs in the area and everything is easy to get to on their bus system! I recommend this place and would enjoy returning myself!
Cons: to be really particular, their pillows were rock hard! I used a few towels instead! a very small detail!

Overview Reviews

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was amazing, you couldn't get anything anywhere near this quality for the price so make sure you get it. Exemplary staff, willing to help and always full of smiles, never presumung an careful about your privacy. Also, outdoor onsen with a view of the moon, perfect to cocoon for half an hour after a day walking.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Just lovely. Loads of history, charm and character. A real highlight of our trip. Good value and location too.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Absolutely amazing place to stay in the middle of Beppu. It is retro but yet stylish; it is nostalgic but yet characteristic. Staff was very welcoming and attentive. The room is large and has lovely decorations. The outdoor hot spring for private use is really a nice touch for maximising my enjoyment at this place. Strongly recommend to opt in for the breakfast - very tasty indeed! I would love to visit them again soon - worth every penny!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful Onsen. Great place!
Cons: Nothing. Perfect.
7.5 Good
Pros: The interior was very cute and staff were very lovely and helpful! They had even hired an English speaking staff for foreign visitors!
Cons: The bathroom and floors were a bit dirty and walls very thin (you could constantly hear staff and guests stomping around the wooden boards outside) the price was kind of steep for the offering. Would have also been nice if dinner was available as an add on
7.0 Good
Pros: Having read the reviews, I knew this was going to be a rather dated ryokan in need of updates, but, it is still a good value for money if you are looking for a traditional Japanese experience. The building is old and creaky and that is part of the charm, however, that shouldn't stop them brightening up the inside onsen a bit, which was so dark and murky that I didn't even use it. Fortunately, the outdoor onsen made up for that. The staff were lovely and even dropped what they were doing to drive me to the train station upon departure.
Cons: A few updates to the soft furnishings could be done to update the place. My en suite bathroom had an unpleasant sour odor if I did not run the exhaust fan and air constantly. Could not SEE the bottom of the inside onsen and I'm not sure if that meant the bottom needed scrubbing, so I did not use it at all.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very comfortable and peaceful room and building. We were made to feel very welcome. Loved the hot springs indoor and outdoor and being provided with fresh Yakatas to wear which we could choose. Delicious breakfast. Staff were very welcoming, we were even greeted in the street when out one evening.
Cons: Shared toilet
5.0 Okay
Pros: The location of the hotel is easy to find
Cons: The hotel is not very clean and my room has cockroach
Overview Reviews

9.6 Excellent
Pros: The new wing I stayed is nicely decorated, clean and not crowded. I booked the penthouse and a twin room. Both are very nice. Staff are helpful but speak very limited English.
Cons: The food was pre-cooked long ago and was getting cold or hard when we ate. Beef was cut in a big piece (approx. 1.3 x 1.3 x 5 cm) for grill. Since it's A4 or A5 beef, very oily when you put such a big piece in your mouth. Booking.com doesn't offer children price and choice of menu. I paid adult price for my 2 kids which should be cheaper if I could pay children price. The hotel couldn't partially refund the price paid after they found out I brought 2 kids. The property is at the mountain, in the middle of nowhere. If you don't drive, good for a night's stay so you don't have to worry about transportation. The hotel offers free pick up service from Beppu JR station.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful property and the room was huge and clean. Dinner and breakfast was amazing too.
Cons: Not accessible by public transport. Took a taxi to the hotel but staff offered us a ride down via their van when we checked out.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were so welcoming and friendly. It was great to experience staying in a traditional Japanese ryokan.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Big room and hot tub
Cons: N/A
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This hotel is amazing. A modern taken on an Onsen. The rooms are fantastic, a great size, amazing view of the bay and included our our hot spring bath! The staff we also amazing and so helpful with everything we needed. Also had continental breakfast options for those who wanted it.
Cons: It was a little out of town and required a taxi to get in or out. There were a few restaurants close by but we didn’t test them out.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The private bathroom was excellent.
Cons: It's a bit hard to find the property at night.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: The staff, Yoko-san was superb. The private onsen was great but the food was superb.
Cons: Location was a bit out, but still okay
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The food was amazing and we appreciated the care taken in translating the menu and in the presentation of all the beautiful dishes. We loved having our own two private baths, and felt very comfortable in the futons.
Cons: The check out time was 11, and we wanted to use the Family Bath at 10:00, but someone was in there. Just after they got out, the cleaning staff went in (at 10:30). We went in anyway, but felt we were not supposed to do that. Maybe the cleaning staff should go in after the check out time?
9.6 Excellent
Pros: High level traditional Japanese hotel. The staff was unbelievable, amazing. The facility is beautiful, clean, quiet and very relaxing. The family Onsen and the private onsen are well maintained, nice and clean. Food just perfect, great culinary experience.
Cons: I don’t take it as a critic, but as a warning to western travelers! Being a traditional Japanese hotel (with the beds on the tatami and so on..) the meals are Japanese. The Japanese breakfast is very big (rice, soup, various kinds of fish, pickles) and could be a bit difficult to approach for some Europeans... But, as I said before the food was just perfect.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Wonderful staff, excellent food, great Onsen very clean.
Cons: Futons could have been a little thicker.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The staff was very friendly and flexible. The garden outside was beautiful and the atmosphere in the ryokan was very relaxing. The baths in the room were great and also the bigger private outdoor bath was usable for free. The selection of food was amazing, dishes looked beautiful and were very delicious.
Cons: There had been a misunderstanding about a special diet requested in advance. However, after clarification the staff was able to fix the issue by the next day and the updated menu was excellent.

7.0 Good
Pros: Nice well preserved ryokan. It felt like we were staying at someone's home. Very personable.
Cons: Dinner was disappointing. It started off well with sashimi and miso soup but felt that the entire meal was small.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Room clean and well appointed. Location most convenient near JR station.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel was close to Beppu station and the staff were super friendly, especially the older ladies. We had a room with our own private bath but the common baths were also easy to use: just see which of the three is not being used, change the mark to occupied and enjoy! The breakfast was traditional Japanese food and filled nicely.
Cons: I found one black hair from my bath towel, but other than that I don't have any complaints.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful Ryokan with a nice garden and atmosphere. An amazing experience with super service. The room was just perfect. The onsens were free at anytime we wanted to use them. Nice breakfast.
Cons: Everything was great
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The ryokan is easy to find and near to the train station. The room was fine, the differents onsen nice.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Good location Friendly staff 3 hot springs Good service
7.0 Good
Pros: Breakfast was good and the place was clean and very spacious. The onsens were nice.
Cons: I arrived a few hours before check-in time, but there was no one to speak to at the reception or to keep the luggage before the actual check-in time. A bit expensive for the amenities.
10.0 Excellent

Cons: nothing
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The location is ideal and the staff are very kind and helpful!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Super clean, very friendly staff, great location.
Cons: The beds are not comfortable and with every turn they make noises.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Quiet and nice guest house, very close to the train station of Beppu. Maybe the more "occidental" guest house we have been to in Japan with a "real" kitchen, tables (inside and outside), sofas and even computers that you can use. There are lockers at the reception and in the rooms as well. Everything was clean and the staff was nice.
Cons: We stayed in a private room (1 night) and in a dormitory (2 nights). We did get more intimacy in the private room but it is more like a private bunked bed in a dormitory than a real private room. Not such a problem but maybe not worth paying more than a dormitory.
6.7 Good
Pros: Ok. But was not clear 5bat this hostel with paperthin walls not fully partitioned and so extremely noisy all night. Little sleep Butcheap and pleasant common room with free coffee
Cons: Noise. Rooms not entirely partitioned off
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Comfy shared area, close to Beppu station, helpful staff.
Cons: We had to pay for towels, rooms area can be a noisy.

9.2 Excellent
Pros: This place is amazing. As it's pretty far from city, but it's all worth the travel. Private onsen in the room and spacious. Waking up to a beautiful beppu view and air is so fresh.! My room booked includes dinner and breakfast, it's totally worth the money and tasted good. The staff were helpful, requested a desert plate to says HBD for my hubby wanted to tip them, they refused to collect it. I would highly recommend this place for couple not so for family with kids. We drove in, and passed by yufuin for the famous beef. It was such an amazing experience. Totally would recommend this hotel to couple. plenty of IG photo taking sights, fidn this #terracemidoubaru on your IG and you will know what i meant.
4.2 Okay
Pros: We did like the restaurant which was excellent and we also enjoyed the isolated position of the property although it was a long taxi ride from the centre of Beppu. The staff were really helpful but the service doesn'tir quite get there given the cost of the property and their sell as a luxury property.
Cons: They have tried to develop a contemporary luxury hotel, but they have tried to do it on the cheap - hence a lot of the comments on the reviews about noise and being able to hear your neighbours etc. Unfortunately given the issue with noise, the way the hotel is presented and the service this hotel represents poor value for money.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The room was up there with the best I have ever stayed in. In fact it was the best
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location, the onsen was large enough to relax in with naturally fed hot water. The traditional room was a great touch, giving an insight into Japanese living.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Food was amazing
Cons: Very good location for view but it was not amazing view from bath That’s very important for guest

Pros: Very helpful staffs , the traditional Japanese cottage is beautiful , tatami very comfort , they provided free private onsen , that’s amazing .
Cons: The bathroom shower is weak to supply hot water , luckily we use onsen bathroom , that’s better than bathroom in room ,

Cons: Bathroom shower wasn’t working properly (in house one) and no heating system apart from rooms wilhich made rest of the spaces rather cold and chilly. Pros: Service, food, ambience, and everything is excellent at Beppu Showaen. There's nothing bad about this ryokan; staff go all out to make your stay as comfortable and memorable as it can be!
Cons: Nothing at all.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very warm and friendly staff, being very kind to my 6-year old daughter. The hotel is well situated being at the mountain, if you want to spend some days in calm and relaxing atmosphere, this hotel is definitely much better than others you can find at seaside Beppu (plenty of tourists). Also the first day we waked up and find many monkeys on the top of the roof and they jumped from one tree to another, fantastic scene! The meals are great, authentic Japanese traditional meals!
Cons: Nothing, everything perfect!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The location was most inspiring! It was clean, garden immaculate, the air is fresh.
Cons: The toilet is cold.

Cons: Pricely. But i guess you are paying for the quality you are getting. So its worth it. Otherwise no complaints.

Cons: The set dinner menu is not that attractive. But the food tastes good.

Pros: The rooms are spacious, cozy , clean and well equipped. The staffs are nice and helpful. I will surely stay in this hotel if I visit Beppu again.
Cons: The hotel is a little bit far from the Beppu station. The only transportation is taxi if you have big baggage. It is better to have a pick-up service from JR station to the hotel.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Room quality, views, exclusive feeling from the time you arrived. To incorporate the natural attributes of the areas such as an onsen into your room was amazing.
Cons: Wine list was limited

Pros: Beautiful property and the room was huge and clean. Dinner and breakfast was amazing too.
Cons: Not accessible by public transport. Took a taxi to the hotel but staff offered us a ride down via their van when we checked out.

Cons: It was a little out of town and required a taxi to get in or out. There were a few restaurants close by but we didn’t test them out.

Pros: The Maison style apartment was lovely. It was spacious with a living room and bedroom with beds on the second floor and on the first floor there was a bath, onsen style, with a Japanese Tatami room and a second bathroom. It was spacious and very comfortable. The balcony was nice to sit and watch the bay in the evening and then the sunrise in the morning. The staff was very helpful and kind and assisted us with travel arrangements and in other ways. We had an in room massage and it was very well done.
Cons: The hotel itself is very near the port, so it was convenient for us to get to the ferry to go across to Shikoku. However there were no real restaurants or stores around the hotel, it was on a busy road next to a large furniture store. Despite all this, it was very quiet and peaceful in the room and it was right on the ocean. Our one gripe was that breakfast was very expensive, ¥4000 each, and that was the only option available. There was coffee in the room, but we had to wait until we left the hotel to have breakfast.

Pros: Initially we were apprehensive about spending the money on a four bed villa for just the two of us, and the online photos of the villa did not do it justice. We are really happy that we did book the villa for the three nights in Beppu and it was our favourite hotel in the whole of our 3 week honeymoon. We loved the interior design, the private bath and the overall layout of the villa. The staff were absolutely amazing, they were always ready to help and check that we were happy, and spoke amazing English.
