Car hire at Accra Kotoka Airport in Ghana is in the arrivals area of the main terminal. After exiting baggage reclaim you will see signs to the car hire desks. Staff there will help you with your car choice and advise that they only rent cars with a driver. Consequently, you will not have to go to the collection point. Your driver will bring the car to the terminal and meet you. It is not advised that tourists rent a car and drive it themselves in Ghana.
Car rental at Accra Kotoka Airport includes international car hire firms as well as local operators. They have a range of vehicles available, but it is recommended that you enquire about your choice of car early. A vehicle like a 4x4 will be a lot more comfortable on journeys through rural areas, and even in the cities it will be a better choice than the smaller standard car you might choose in Europe or the UK.
Accra Kotoka Airport car hire desks are in the airport terminal, so you can avail yourself of all the airport’s normal amenities. This is a large, modern international airport and consequently comes with many facilities such as staffed desks, tourist information, ATMs, rest rooms, restaurants, shops and cafes. There are also family amenities and currency exchange desks.
If you do choose to drive yourself you will need an international driving permit to hire a car in Ghana. You will not be able to use your UK or other EU driving licence. You will also need a credit card and in some cases a cash deposit. You will be asked to present your passport and flight details as additional identification. The minimum age to rent a car in Ghana is 18 years old but as you will likely receive a chauffeur-driven car, age limits do not apply in the same way as they do in Europe.
The only car rental company that offers shuttle or pick-up services from Kotoka Airport, Accra to off-airport locations is Europcar.
Cons:I reserved Mazda Bt-50 which is a pickup truck but was given a compact SUV instead. They canceled my reservation without consulting me.
Pros:What I enjoyed about having a rental car in Ghana was the convenience of not having to get taxis to go everywhere with can add up. Also specialty rental car agencies are quite pricey. But with the money I paid for Hertz Ghana, I might as well have rented a limousine!
Cons:Firstly, the customer service was poor. With the exception of one agent who helped me during the pick up Henry Kofitse was cold, unfriendly and entirely money oriented. They also have a reservation deposit policy that forced me to buy local insurance and makes the insurance you get online directly from kayak or Hertz (because Hertz Ghana is a local franchise) obsolete. Essentially they told me I have to deposit close to $3000 USD if I didn't buy the local insurance which cost $600 or so on top of the rental car cost!!!! He also made me pay an additional $89 dollars for adding a day and charged two separate fees for drop off on Sunday because it was a "non-business day" but when we arrived the office had been open since morning and he was renting cars out to other clients (their business hours were not listed by the way). This is a money grubbing office and despite the fact that we needed the car, I would not rent here again. Unfortunately Hertz Ghana is one of only two reliable locations that rent cars in Ghana, so they are capitalizing on their monopoly and corporate affiliation with Hertz. I would rent the car again but if there were similar choices I would not think twice to pick another rental car company.
Cons:Still don't have my receipt.
Pros:I wish I could have a car but you just charged me for nothing
Cons:They didn’t receive my booking from you. They were no more cars, and you charged me for the insurance of a care I never get. You are mediocre. Your company need to close because you still people’s money. You are a ghost
