Pros: I liked the outlook and size of room. Bed was comfortable and decor was great. Staff made us feel welcome and really helped us enjoy our stay. Spa great and hairdresser too Breakfast and pool a great start to day.
Cons: Bathroom. Water didn’t drain in bowl. Shower Tap was too difficult to turn on or off.
Excellent 9.6
Pros: Breakfast was a fantastic spread! Many thanks to the general manager Nicholas for going out of his way to make us so comfortable. The staff was fabulous looking after us.
Excellent 9.7
Pros: Terrific hotel with wonderful pool, views, right on the beach, good food selection and quality, superb staff. A bit pricey for being right in stone town (and therefore not on the nicest beach), but a great place to stay for those who don't have time to get out to the further parts of the island
Good 7.9
Pros: The prompt response and action on the above mentioned dislike note which was rake care of by the hotel manager himself .. Very friendly staff and apologetic.. ready to help and assist at anytime
Cons: The house keeping services was not up to the standadrd .. The insects that might creep into the room The gym was not also upto the standard cleanliness and hygenity wise
Okay 5.8
Pros: The breakfast was the best part! It was delicious with so many options!
Cons: After traveling for 2 weeks prior to the Park Hyatt and coming from 3 different accommodations, which were half the price we were very disappointed. It was disheartening to us for the mere fact that we came from places with superb customer service and it was apparent that the Park Hyatt did not compare in the least.
Excellent 9.6
Pros: Excellent location, great restaurant
Cons: No hand towel in the main bathroom, only tissues (difficult to wipe wet hands with)
Excellent 9.2
Cons: The price is high for the rooms
Excellent 9.2
Pros: The hotel is beautiful. We had an ocean view and kept the door open all night and it was simply stunning. We woke to the local women doing bootcamp on the beach in their hijabs and it was delightful. The management were exceptional and introduced themselves individually to us in case we needed anything. When we wanted to send some of our belongings back to Australia they were so helpful. We loved the pool area and after 2 weeks on safari, we adored this hotel. It gave us the refreshment we needed to travel on to Egypt.
Cons: The bar staff were so slow! Over an hour to get a Margherita at the pool is ridiculous and beers always arrived warm. However a local from Dar gave us a great tip - ask for an ice bucket with your beer and all will be fine.

Okay 5.0
Pros: The staff were very friendly and eager to help. However we were given some incorrecr information which completely derailed our plans for the final night.
Cons: The room we stayed in was poorly located and didn't catch any breeze and so was stiflingly hot and the a/c was glacial. A ceiling fan might be a possible option to ensure the rooms can stay cool. The bathroom was ridiculously small and in need of some upgrades to the fittings, particularly the taps and the showerhead which were encrusted with lime from the water. The sad little shower curtain was not a great look either. The breakfast has been the worst breakfast I have had at a supposedly 5* hotel. Both the hot and cold options were severely limited and underwhelming. The food was not particularly tasty either.
Good 6.3
Pros: Massage
Cons: Incompetence in planning a birthday
Excellent 9.2
Pros: Staff is very friendly and we had some nice conversations with everyone. We really enjoyed the atmosphere and the options available to us. My wife had a massage and she loved it, breakfast buffet was perfect, and the food at the restaurant was very good. The location was perfect for venturing out to local bars and eateries for a change of scenery. The beach view from our room was perfect. Great hotel all in all.
Cons: The bathroom tub/shower area could be fixed. There was mildew/mold in certain spots, and a lot of rust. The shower water also was finicky, we couldn’t seem to get any cold water going, so showers were very hot. Also, we had written to the hotel that we would be celebrating our honeymoon, and were told to expect flowers and fruits, but we only got fruits. We weren’t treated in any way special to make us feel like we were celebrating our honeymoon. It wasn’t even in the room notes, so none of the staff really knew. At our other hotel, we were greeted with congratulations and champagne and flowers. This is definitely an area you can improve upon for other couples celebrating special occasions.
Excellent 10.0
Pros: Serena Hotel was our first stop in Zanzibar on what has turned out to be one of the best trip of our lives. We spent two nights in stone town at the Serena Hotel. The hotel is really quite a heritage in stone town. Fantastically located, just a short walk from the old city. An excellent breakfast spread and really charming room which still has lots of classic touches that make it quite authentic. Tip: book a sun down dinner at the Emerson Spice which is a 10 min walk from the hotel! And book in advance to get the roof top/terrace!
Cons: There was a wedding on our last night and whilst it was quite entertaining to watch, I do wish the hotel had informed us as we could not go to bed until after 11pm when the wedding ended.
Good 7.9
Pros: Beautiful period rooms with great views to the sea. Hotel from a bygone era that maintains its charm and quality without modernizing too much. Nice outdoor patio area and pool. Great location.
Cons: Lack of late check out beyond 10am although bag storage provided for the meantime. Breakfast was very limited and poor quality for the price of the stay and the elegant restaurant surroundings. Expensive for the services provided although a treat for a short stay.
Okay 5.4
Pros: view was ok from the room
Cons: no lifts you have to walk up the stairs to whatever floor you are on
Excellent 10.0
Pros: Perfect location, and an easy walk to main sites in Stone Town. Mollel at reception was very helpful in booking two nice excursions for me on a very short notice. Yousif Kabir at reception is also very nice and kind. Rabia, Amina at reception and another lady that I cannot recall her name unfortunately. The hotel terrace overlooking the Indian ocean is very nice. I could spend hours just sitting there. Restaurants are very good with excellent quality and taste of food. Excellent service too. Housekeeping is excellent too and very kind and helpful. If I visit Stone Town again, very likely I will stay at the same hotel.
Cons: Nothing I can think of

Pros: This is such a beautiful venue with a unique local flair, super friendly & accommodating staff and great food as well. Rooms are very spacious, comfortable & clean, everything you could ask for. As for Danielle, the new hotel manager, she is such a sweetheart and has quite the life story. Don’t even think about it, you’ve found the perfect place!
Good 6.7
Pros: Interesting location, large room, helpful staff.
Cons: AC master control was centralized and turned off during the day making staying in the room extremely uncomfortable, even between breakfast and check-out at 11AM.
Excellent 9.2
Pros: The staff is absolutely lovely and caters to your every wish. The place is absolutely clean and well furnished, so you can relax and enjoy your stay.
Excellent 8.0
Pros: The hotel was a wonderful gem nestled amongst the streets of stone town. Walking distance from the ferry we arrived early and could drop our bags and get information on the city from the really helpful staff. The room was beautifully furnished. Breakfast was plentiful with a wonderful addition of coffee and tea in brought to our room in the morning. We had a fabulous stay.
Cons: Nothing! We had a great stay.

Pros: The staff were very accommodating, the service at this hotel is excellent from the reception, breakfast to room service.
Cons: Bathroom has a stale smell but this seems to be sewerage in Zanzibar in general.
Good 7.4
Pros: Big clean comfortable beds, spacious room, great wifi, fridge in the room, excellent tv reception with lots of channels
Cons: We didn't have hot water the first day. They fixed it the second, but the water pressure wasn't very good- I don't have thick hair and it took awhile to rinse the shampoo out... It's set back a ways from road so you need help with your bags an the food in the restaurant is limited and prices are high. Better breakfast at the Serena

Pros: Very well located in the Old Town and the hotel is in a lovely old building. Clean and comfortable - a good option for a couple of nights in Stone Town.

Pros: Lovely old house with extensive views from the roof top restaurant. Staff really friendly and helpful. Breakfast is delicious.

Pros: Staff, roof terrace, location, history
Cons: The room was quite noisy but that's just part of being in central stone town!

Pros: Room was very spacious
Cons: Very limited facilities
Excellent 9.6
Pros: Great, beautiful building and friendly service. Good location.
Excellent 8.8
Pros: A nice heritage hotel in the center of stone town and just minutes away from the waterfront area. Rooms are spacious, air conditioned and have a large bathroom. Staff is great, especially the ones working at the restaurant are very accomodating.
Cons: Only downside is that the building smells sometimes of mold and the toilet in the restaurant area had a strong sewage odor.

Pros: Great view from the rooftop breakfast room & great breakfast!
Excellent 9.6
Pros: The ladies on staff were wonderful! And a delicious breakfast on the roof. Truly authentic to Zanzibar, and perfect location for exploring Stone Town!
Excellent 8.3
Pros: The interiors are amazing, transports you to a different time. We loved all the decor. The coffee (we usually have espresso machiatos and cappuccinos) was simply amazing, flavorful and just perfect. The location is spot on, dead center in terms of the attractions and good restaurants. The roof top is the best part, having breakfast early with a panoramic view of stonetown is a highlight. The breakfast is delicious too, don't forget to try the fresh mango spreads, took me back to my childhood flavors from South India :-).
Cons: The shower didn't have much pressure, it was almost close to a trickle. The manager did acknowledge the fact but it's an old structure and our bathroom was on the top floor so there really wasn't much that could be done, better to ask for a room on the first floor if possible.
Excellent 9.2
Pros: The property itself is very characteristic, an old palace with a lot of stairs and a stunning rooftop, and it's beautifully kept. We've been in the Arabica room and it was nice, clean and fairly big! They have the best coffee you can find in the Country, staff are genuinely friendly and helpful and the location is perfect if you want to walk to the main points of interest in Stone Town.
Cons: N/A
Excellent 9.2
Pros: Interesting historical building, with nicely furnished room. The staff / management were super helpful in helping us set up airport and beach transfers. They also greeted us with some complementary coffee from the cafe, which was delicious. The only downside was that our private bathroom was separate from the bedroom in a nearby corridor (we stayed in Espresso, but I think some of the other rooms at the property have in suite bathrooms). It was still pretty convenient to use the bathroom, but I accidentally locked the key in the bathroom at night, and the manager kindly came back to the hotel to let me back in with the spare key. I just wish the bathroom door didn’t automatically lock
Cons: Separate bathroom
Excellent 10.0
Pros: I liked everything
Cons: Nothing
Excellent 9.6
Cons: The traditional decor and the coffee traditions enhanced by friendly service.
Excellent 10.0
Pros: Charming hotel rooms in a beautiful old building. Very friendly staff that will go the extra mile to make you feel very comfortable. The highlight was the excellent breakfast on the rooftop terrace!
Cons: Nothing, everything was perfect!

Excellent 9.2
Pros: Lovely room with ocean view. Excellent staff, friendly and responsive.
Good 7.0
Pros: The views are pretty and the property has historic charm.
Cons: The swimming pool is too little to use by adults and the beach is filled with people off the proporty especially in the evening which makes it difficult to relax by the beach area. At times it is too noisy and not enough space to enjoy.
Excellent 8.3
Pros: Excellent location, close to the beach, fantastic views. Rooms were clean and comfortable
Cons: The reception area does not match the rooms. It is poorly constructed, walkways are not paved.
Excellent 10.0
Pros: Location, staff personal attention and the food
Cons: Nothing was wrong, was perfect thanks
Good 6.3
Pros: The staff was very friendly and made a big effort to make our stay as wonderful as possible.
Cons: I didn't like thast the Hotel beach was open to public. There were a lot of local men hangig around with their Dogs and smoked weed. It was very noisy and as a european women in a Bikini you felt watched by them. Also there was a lot of rubbish on the beach and staff didn't move a finger to remove it. Our first room was a bit old style but the air was nice. The other room we had was very nice renovated but the smell and air in this room was not healthy.
Good 6.7
Pros: The location, the serene environment and the history behind the ruins.
Cons: The breakfast buffet had a limited variety. The double rooms were spacious however, the family room did not meet our expectations - it was a bit small.
Excellent 10.0
Pros: Good location for Chumbe Island which was the main reason for staying. Novel hotel layout amongst the Mbweni House ruins.
Cons: Nothing to dislike although the room was on the slightly smaller side but with a great shower!
Excellent 10.0
Pros: Manager is very accommodant and staff so NICE... GO THERE
Excellent 9.7
Pros: First the staff was amazing and so was the location. I liked being close to stone town and the airport but still having a secluded beach.
Cons: The bathrooms could use an update but rest of the room was great

Pros: Really good service. Great location. Very accommodating for young children.
Excellent 8.3
Pros: Great location, very close to the night market and all the tourist stops are walking distance. I liked the room and hotel interiors. Good breakfast, very filling.
Cons: Pool area wasn’t really that comfortable, there are no loungers just chairs by the pool. The hotel is next to a mosque so you hear the call to prayer very early in the morning, our room was facing the mosque so we were woken up in the morning by it. Airport transfer is very expensive from the hotel for a 15 min drive, I would advise to book privately, you can get it for much cheaper. We ordered some calamari and it came uncooked, we couldn’t chew it, the waitress was kind enough to remove it from our bill but it was very awkward.
Okay 5.0
Pros: Breakfast was good.
Cons: Safer location.
Excellent 8.8
Pros: Very clean room, a lovely relax ambiance throughout the whole hotel. Friendly staff, very helpful and very pretty refreshing pool.
Cons: We had the feeling the matrass had had its best time :), food was ok but we did not had impression it was freshly made.
Excellent 10.0
Pros: I love the authenticity of this place. It screams Zanzibar. The staff is amazing as well. Will definitely return to this place in the future !
Excellent 10.0
Pros: The hotel was stunning. You felt like a merchant in the old times. The pool helped to cool down the heat and the garden was a great place to chill out. Air conditioner was available in the room, which helped to sleep. The breakfast was for a king with all the meals very well presented. Staff was always smiling and attentive. There was many areas where you could chill out. We also got some activities organised through the hotel and didn't charged us when we had to cancel because of the rain. I would definitely stay there again.

Pros: Everything. Best value for price. Most comfortable bed on Sansibar!!!! The staff is so friendly and helpful. We had the best room in the hotel on the third floor with seaview and big balcony. Worth every cent. We highly recommend and would stay there again next time in Stonetown.
Cons: Nothing!
Excellent 8.8
Pros: Helpful and friendly staff. Room and hotel in general very well equiped. Great breakfast buffet.
Cons: At first we did not get the Room we booked but after showing us 2 other rooms we finally got the one we booked. If you like it quite do not choose a Room to the seaside because there is the harbour and a road. If you do not mind noise this side is great. Hot water supply in the bathroom was difficult. Bed for our taste too soft.
Excellent 10.0
Pros: Clean nicely decorated room with comfortable bed and mosquito net. We liked the little touches such as slippers, water in fridge daily and fogging of room with mosquito spray before bedtime. Breakfast provided a good variety of fruit, pastries and hot options including freshly cooked omelettes. We stayed in Freddie Mercury room which had a fantastic balcony looking onto the street and beach below. Did not find the nearby calls to prayer a problem at all. Well placed just outside the busy alleyways of Stonetown, 5 minutes walk to excellent restaurants etc.
Cons: European food choices on menu - best to stick to the local cuisine.
Excellent 8.3
Pros: This hotel is absolutely worth 10 points rating, rooms, pool, and common areas really very very nice. Breakfast is especially rich and delicious. Unfortunately, the check-in was very bad, we booked an upgraded business-class room for a great price, and we got a very small, much lower-priced room. The receptionist said they do not currently have such a room, and this is not theirs, but a booking problem, and it took a long time to argue to get at least a discount on the room we received.
Cons: check-in
Good 7.9
Pros: Great position overlooking oceanfront and harbour. Short walk to Old stonetown.
Cons: Uncomfortable bed and it creaked with every movement.

Pros: The room was comfortable and a good size for me as a solo traveler. The staff were very helpful and friendly, and I was able to book several excursions through the reception desk. I also liked having the cafe available for meals, and the breakfast buffet upstairs.
Cons: The location was fine, but I would have liked to be slightly closer to the center of Stone Town.
Excellent 9.2
Pros: The hotel is top-notch. As the hotel is run partly by Dutch people, it has a good feel for European values and standards. Also the food is excellent!
Cons: The only downside is the location near the port. It is convenient if you travel by ferry (you can walk it in 5 minutes), but it is not the best neighborhood in town. But don't let that put you off. I will still recommend this hotel!
Excellent 10.0
Pros: Beautiful clean rooms, extremely welcoming staff, excellent breakfast- this hotel definitely had the X-Factor: 10/10!
Excellent 8.8
Pros: Central location, beautiful and spacious room

Good 7.9
Pros: Good location. Spacious rooms.
Excellent 8.3
Pros: Beautiful hotel. Its gorgeously designed there's so much detail and intricacies to the hotel. Everything about the hotel is amazing, the colour scheme, the decor, the furniture, the artwork, the items, the pool and overall design and layout of hotel. It's romantic hotel. It's an interesting hotel because it's quite modern but it's also got a unique antique flair, which I love, because I love the mix of modern and antique style. The breakfast was pretty good there was a wide selection of food and drinks, juice, tea, coffee, chai, fresh omelettes and crepes that could be made to order, pastries, a wide selection of jams and spreads (including Nutella!!!) Fresh toast, fresh fruit, fresh juices hot selections for breakfast, Arabic-tanzanian coffee and special sweet treat; we were very spoilt for choice. To top it off, we got to have breakfast overlooking the beach which was very special and very relaxing - such a pleasant environment to hang out in. The pool was lovely, it's a gorgeous design, it was nice and cool to have a dip on a hot day - there's beautiful chairs you can relax on with nice towels & bathrooms nearby. The hotel is close to shops, it's close to restaurants, it's a short walk to the Farodhani night food markets best the water. Therez TV with good selection and nice balcony overlooking the water again. The price is insanely good for what is on offer, great value for money. Very friendly staff, always smiling, pleasant and cooperative. A fair-minded and we'll managed hotel. Well done Tembo Hotel!
Cons: Bedroom near window had vermin or bird droppings of some kind which blew through the window onto my bed. Therefore, I had to move to another bed and keep the window closed and even the curtain, because I was afraid I was going to get a pillow and bed full of God knows what...! Basically, the outside of the window needs to be cleaned more regularly so as to prevent droppings flying into the window & onto the bed and belongings.
Excellent 8.8
Pros: Great location, nice pool, decent breakfast
Cons: Didn’t like being in one of the ‘extra’ buildings rather than the main hotel. Constantly had to walk through a sketchy alley - getting offered marijuana, being bugged to buy stuff or give them cigarettes. The room in the extra building was large and comfortable but being a single woman travelling alone I didn’t enjoy the alley at all.
Good 7.9
Pros: Room was excellent, well arranged, neat and tidy. Breakfast was excellent. Good variety. The preparation was fresh, quick and taste oriented. Waiters were very friendly, even the reception staff were willingly helpful and polite. Pool was quite clean and very tempting to dive. It was well lit even during the night. The apartment area felt isolated, but was safe. The apartment building across the main hotel area, being slightly cheaper, is maintained well too.
Cons: We stayed for one night, despite being very good. I checked in late and checked out early. I needed a quick room cleaning in between, which I did not get. Pillows were slightly smelly and old. May need some changing. Lighting may need to be improved. It was quite dimly lit. The pool area may need an area away from public viewing and needs to remain open 24 hours. The apartment area requires an elevator. The 2nd floor was quite difficult for us to keep moving up and down constantly. (And bear in mind I went there with my mum and my toddler).
Excellent 8.3
Pros: Perfect location by the beach, and easy access to old Stone Town. Nice quiet location, wonderful rooms with balcony overlooking the pool and ocean.

Pros: The hospitality and friendliness of the staff. The general running of the hotel.
Cons: The stairs.
Okay 5.0
Pros: Beautiful old building with interesting pieces of antique furniture, proximity to the historical center
Cons: Bathroom had a terrible smell, the room was quite small, breakfast was average with some of the food obviously gone bad, some of the personnel was friendly, others seemed like they were doing us a favor by working there, overall the warm hospitality we encountered everywhere else in Zanzibar was completely missing. Overpriced.
Excellent 10.0
Pros: Hotel is very beautiful, has its own history. We had a beautiful room on the top, with wonderful view of city and sea. Room was very spacious and the shower with no ceiling really impressed us. You can enjoy sunsets on roof terrace, or observe city rooftops with a cup of tea. Also tried the pool, which was lovely. Breakfast was good. Location - perfect. Close to tourist agency, pharmacy, many souvenir shops and restaurants.
Cons: On our stay there were quite a few rains with wind, so there were some water leaking through wooden windows.
Excellent 9.0
Pros: Beautiful restored and refurbished Arabic “city palace”. Not direct at the the sea but very good located at the old city. Fantastic staff!
Cons: -
Excellent 8.3
Pros: The view from balcony was very nice. The location is really good. We had issue with the hot water in the shower but they helped us by providing bigger room. All the rooms hav beautiful balcony with a swimming pool view. We had a room with two balcony. One with street view and another with swimming pool view. Will come again.
Excellent 8.0
Pros: The hotel is set in an amazing historic building. The view from the roof balcony and the climate is great. Hotel in a great location. The very center of Stone Town on a cool street. Good breakfast. They also have luggage storage in case someone has to leave it somewhere for a while.
Cons: We had a room in the old part of the hotel and unfortunately the smell in the room was not the best. It probably results from the moisture that is there. This is the only minus but big.
Excellent 8.8
Pros: Its location and the old world charm!
Cons: Its Wi-Fi was slow & sporadic in the room.
Excellent 9.1
Pros: This is a very unique and beautiful hotel...They take care of a lot of little details. I believe it was a little pricey - but it was also during the holiday season. Some nickel and diing- too much for taxis and so forth - ut a kind and attentive staff.

Excellent 8.8
Pros: Best location for exploring the Stone Town on foot. Clean, comfortable, good friendly service and reasonably-priced. Good mix of Zanzibari/Western breakfast. We didn't try their lunch and dinner menu, but it looked okay.
Cons: They need to put dampers on the feet of their furniture. If there is a floor above you, every movement of furniture above you makes a horrendous noise below.
Excellent 9.6
Pros: Location of Hotel. Good Indian food. Service of the staff.
Cons: I believe it is slightly expensive.
Excellent 8.8
Pros: The welcome drink and cold towel during check in was much appreciated. The rooms were clean. The Indian food was great. The Chefs were great as they came to enquire how the food was and were very helpful in helping us what to order.
Cons: The Wi-Fi password was per device.
Excellent 10.0
Pros: Sunsets on the rooftop
Cons: Place was great
Good 7.9
Pros: Nice view from the terase. Rich breakfast. Clean room.
Cons: We ordered the child´s bed and it wasnt prepared. I send there many emails about this and without any answer. I asked many times to transfer us from the airport to the hotel and anybody answer neither. I asked many times about our early check-in at 5 am and nobody answered, eventhough I kept sending emails from different email addresses. So - administation was very very poor!!!
Excellent 9.2
Pros: Every thing you just mention it. Mr. Babu was very helpful and friendly not to me only but to all.
Cons: I didn't like to leave the hotel and continue our 5 remaining days, but we had to move to another hotel where our relatives were staying in.
Excellent 9.7
Pros: Simple but friendly, good quality option in stone town.
Cons: Kayak's price was ~$30 less than booking at the hotel. The person at reception couldn't match the rate even though I was standing at the reception desk while booking.

Good 7.1
Pros: Location right on the beach, and helpful staff
Cons: The property is really old and run down. Maintenance needs some attention
Mediocre 3.3
Pros: staff room view
Cons: really i dont like the hotel at all, staff are friendly, but the hotel is not organized , the view of the room was amazing but because it was sea view, but any room inside the hotel has nothing to stay on it, first day i joined the hotel there was 3 lizards in my room, then i moved to another room luckly did not see any lizard in the room but staying waiting them is much annoying. hotel is not in the middle of stone town so you dontt have any thing to do. food was very very very limited, no water, so imagine how it's poor not recommended
Good 7.1
Pros: Breakfast was ok but not much of a choice for vegetarians.
Cons: More choice for vegetarian food on the menu.
Good 7.1
Pros: The staff are nice. The view is fine (but not really ocean view) Close to the airport
Cons: The breakfast A bit far from the city
Excellent 8.0
Pros: The place is fair, the room I stayed is far to the reception you have to go up the hill.
Cons: The house keeping staff made my stay memorable. The decorations he made for my wife’s birthday, was spot on.
Good 6.7
Pros: Nice location near the water. Good.beach views.
Cons: Very badly in need of redecoration and restaurant provided very little food or services.
Good 7.9
Pros: Perfectly placed on the beach. Falling asleep to the sound of the waves is priceless. There is a deck where you can watch mesmerising sunsets.
Cons: The breakfast is a little lacking, but for the price, it is not bad.
