Pros: Lovely small Ryokan in Yamanouchi. Our hosts couldn’t have been more welcoming and relaxed. The station and park shuttles were a bonus.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The hosts are lovely and very welcoming from the moment they met us up at Yudanaka Station. Traditional Japanese breakfast was excellent and Snow Monkeys are a must do visit. Hot springs bath was a wonderful experience. All the community came together for the evening festival in the narrow alleys and the Ryokan’s and hospitality opened up to reveal their beauty and everyone was so friendly.
Cons: Nothing, we enjoyed every moment of our 2 days/nights.

Pros: Perfect owners of the perfect place. Make sure to order breakfast which is a real treat. Onsens are perfect. All in all excellent value. We would definitely go there again.
Cons: Rooms could be cleaner
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It is a small couple run ryokan, super comfy and clean. The owner made us feel at home with full of little details. From the moment we arrived at Yudanaka Station he was already waiting for us, accommodation was very clean and just a it dated but had all the amenities we needed. He had an amazing onsen(hot spring) inside the facility and the cherry on the cake was he took us to the monkey park and picked us back when we called him!. Super nice couple! I’d love to be back again.best hospitality ever and I mean we have traveled and extensively around the world.
Cons: Nothing
9.5 Excellent
Pros: This beautiful little onsen village is only 5 minutes drive from the monkey park. The ryokan has its own private onsen but they give you a key to visit the 9 others in town. Loved this place and the little bars and friendly people.
Cons: A little expensive but worth it for the extras including lifts from the owner.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: great family owned and run place. It has its own 3 onsens. One for private use next to the standard men/ women. Would recommend to include breakfast option..Rooms are spacious and clean. Pick up and drop off provided at Judanaka station and if wanted at Snow monkey park
Cons: -

Pros: I liked the traditional Japanese bed. We loved the hot tub. The traditional furnishings created a lovely ambiance. We really appreciated the drives to the Snow Monkeys Hot Springs and to the train.
Cons: Nothing really.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The staff were all really nice! They were kind enough to give us a ride to the monkey park and even gave us some homemade jam to take home! We had the baths all to ourselves, but be warned they are hot! The private onsen was great so my partner and I could go in together. The location is really beautiful.
Cons: The pillows and futons were a bit hard.

Pros: Everything was perfect, and the owners were sooo friendly, we had so great time, onsen was very good and japanese breakfast as well
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff are very friendly and the inn itself is wonderful. The best experience we've had so far in Japan. I highly recommend this place if you want some calmness surrounded by mountains. Oh and you get a private onsen to yourself (doesn't matter which room you book). That was a wonderful surprise.
Cons: Everything was perfect!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Staying here was one of the highlights of our 10-day trip to Japan. The private onsens are lovely. The public onsen is great, as well - it's outdoor with a lovely waterfall and good temperature. I would absolutely recommend having dinner during your stay. Breakfast was delicious, as well. Located a 5-minute walk from the Yudanaka station. The owner drove us to the Monkey Park free of charge and kept our bags after checking out.
Cons: Use of the public onsen is limited to 3 hours a day (7:00-10:00 pm when we were there) for women.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great character traditional ryokvan where the hospitality is wonderful. Amazing food with traditional Japanese dishes for dinner and breakfast. Thank you for a great stay
5.4 Okay
Pros: Sorry - it was very ordinary in every regard
Cons: This ryokan was a major disappointment and the worst value / quality we have experienced in our private tour of Japan - totally unlike the upbeat reviews and the attractive website. Everything was mediocre except the price which was extremely high for such mediocre quality. Four star prices for a one star facility
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The old man was very kind to us and drove us up to monkey mountain himself.
Cons: Learn your Japanese before going here :]
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The location was super close to the station. Easy stroll down the tiny village. Very quite and clean Ryokan.
Cons: We arrived at 3pm and did not receive a proper orientation for the onsen. We didn't know where to go in the morning for our breakfast, or where each of the onsen were.
7.5 Good
Pros: Beautiful onsen, it’s nice that they switch male and female bathing times around so you can try both. The outdoor one is awesome. The room is spacious and traditional. Futon beds aren’t crazy comfortable but good experience. The owner drove us to the monkey park which was nice.
Cons: A tad expensive

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Really an excellent place to stay in Shibu onsen! The facility is quite modern but the rooms still have an excellent traditional feeling. The building even has an elevator, a nice touch since it has 6 floors, therefore recommended for who might have issues with stairs. The cherry on top is the shower & outside onsen on the roof, with a view over the entire town. The rooms are excellently clean, and the room for 2 people is plenty spacious. The staff is very nice, with some that speak english fluently, and when you check in you sit together and receive lots of good information. In addition, they also offer shuttle from/to Yudanaka station for free. A little bonus from me personally: I forgot a small souvenir cloth in my room after leaving, and they posted it to my next hotel for free!

Pros: The Front as well as Meal Staff were very gracious, friendly and helpful. Picked us up from the train station as well as drove us to the Monkey park (we only asked for one way, as we wanted to walk back). The meals were fantastic and we enjoyed the onsen on the top floor. We also walked around and visited the public onsens which one can do as a ryokan guest. We enjoyed roaming around Shibu Onsen.
Cons: NA

Pros: The place is simply amazing and the staff is super friendly and takes care of every single detail for you to really enjoy the stay. The rooms are spacious and very beautiful; and you get a yukata to go around the hotel during the evening and another one to have breakfast. Make sure you also visit their beautiful garden and book some time at the private onsen. The place is just 20 min walk to the Snow Monkey park and has a few small restaurants at walking distance. Worths every single yen!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was great.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The staff is extremely friendly, and almost everyone can speak a bit of English, which makes everything much more relaxed, mainly because upon arrival you will plan your stay together with them in regards of dinner and breakfast time, as well as, the reservation of the private bath.
Cons: I have nothing negative to say about this hotel.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The staff at the restaurant were excellent and the all staff in general were fantastic If you are going to see the Snow Monkey park, then there is no better location
Cons: Booking.com said that we allowed for a room that suits 4 people. But the hotel only had 2 adults on the reservation so we ended up having to pay for an extra Futon and kids meals
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We had a wonderful stay at Kanbayashi Hotel Senjukaku!! Definitely it was the perfect choice to celebrate our honeymoon! The hotel provides not only luxurious, but at the same time very cozy expirience. We’ve received a very personalize service, we also were given the Japanese yukatas to go everywhere in the hotel, which made our stay even more authentic. The staff of the Kanbayashi Hotel Senjukaku was very welcoming and incredibly attentive, we couldn’t desire more! Moreover, the room they offered for our honeymoon was terrific!! It was enormous and had 2 private onsens and fascinating view. Thank you very much for that unforgettable experience, we will always remember it!!! And we hope we can come back soon!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Elegant surroundings. Exceptionally helpful and pleasant staff. Beautiful facilities. Gourmet Japanese Breakfasts and Dinners. Spacious and quiet rooms with peaceful outlook over magnificent gardens. Outstanding artworks which changed with the change of season. Onsen facility which had both an enormous inside facility which then connected to an outside rock pool onsen. Closest Ryokan to Snow Monkey Park. Exceptional waiter named Mr. Maruyama. Every staff member was gracious and attentive. Recommend the Monkey Park and Shibu Onsen (short bus ride) The most spacious well-appointed and authentic Ryokan we have stayed at in Japan.
Cons: Everything was perfect.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff was absolutely perfect ! Trying to please the customers was their clear goal. Fantastic service !
Shibu Onsen Kokuya - Yamanouchi - Dining room
6
9.2 Excellent (230 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Shibu Onsen KOKUYA in Yamanouchi, you'll be within a 10-minute drive of Jigokudani Monkey Park and Shiga Kogen Ski Area. The front desk is staffed during limited hours. A train station pick-up service is provided at no charge, and free self parking is available onsite.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Though expensive, the experience was worth the difference. I selected it for the private Onsen. The included dinner was first class and exceeded expectations.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Loved the outdoor shower and spa
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Overall ryokan experience was great. Amazing Japanese breakfast. Onsens were great. Checkin was great, we were made to feel very welcome- a lot of info is given upon arrival though and I wonder if there is more streamlined way to deliver it,, when you are a tired traveller, yet still make it a personable experience..
Cons: Laminated bus times at the back of the shuttle car- they are outdated. There were times bus departed from Bus stop A and B to go to Yudanaka station (after the snow monkey park) but they were wrong as we later checked the timetable the info center had given us.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing and romantic retreat! My partner proposed here and when the staff found out they were all congratulating us and gifted us too!! I booked an private onsen in my room but I don't think it's needed cos there's EIGHT onsens with in the hotel!!! And there's 3 private ones you can book for the night, so you can save a bit of money without having onsen in the room. The service was amazing from start to the end, guiding us through the hotel and facilities and our traditional room. Dinner and breakfast is a must! Exceeded our expectations! This hotel gives you the key to visit the town's onsens as well and we sure did visit most!! This place is onsen galore, I stayed only one night wish we stayed longer! Place is very clean and comfortable! And because we were driving they made us some food snack for the road when we checked out! Simply amazing!! Its value as dinner alone if you were to eat something similar outside can cost $150 pp. 2 people that's already $300aud. So to stay in such place plus dinner plus breakfast... Its worth staying!! There's a cute Frenchie behind the checkout desk!! Highly recommend Thank you so much !!
Cons: Too many onsens to try hahaha spoilt for choice
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The many onsens were amazing! We thoroughly enjoyed all the different baths and of course many thanks to Sho for making our stay most memorable.
Cons: The hot temperature during our 2 day in May.

Pros: Breakfast was very good.
Cons: The toilet was very tiny,
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent service and helpful, friendly staff Many of whom could speak English. Fantastic baths. Great quality food and all round well run Ryokan. Classic Japanese interiors and hospitality.
Cons: Would have loved to have had breakfast in the room.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The kaiseki dinner and the in room onsen
Cons: A bit pricey
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff was absolutely excellent. Kind, helpfull and attentive. They were amazing as hosts and as waiters in their own restaurant and did a good job of informing us at the beginning of our stay. Our whole family is so delighted that we found this place.
6.7 Good
Pros: Staff were helpful.
Cons: Balcony onsen is too rough ... felt more like pumice-stone/ sandpaper. Didn’t enjoy the onsen. Arrived for our dinner reservation to be told that we had booked for an hour later. Returned to our room where staff were preparing the bedding...as we were to be at dinner ( as their understanding).
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Friendly, helpful, and gracious, every person at the hotel went above and beyond to welcome us to our first ryokan experience. And the food! Delicious and beautiful. The town is perfect. The onsens were amazing. Our stay at Kokyua was game changing. Words cannot describe how wonderful this place is. It will now be a mandatory part of our Japan
Minshuku Miyama - Yamanouchi - Building

9.1 Excellent (210 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Minshuku Miyama in Yamanouchi, you'll be within a 10-minute drive of Jigokudani Monkey Park and Shiga Kogen Ski Area. The front desk is staffed during limited hours. Free self parking is available onsite.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The lovely owners and the distance to the Monkey park. Very close by, you can walk but the owner will bring you. He also picked us up and dropped us at the station (for free). The dinner was really fantastic! The breakfast too, but realize it's a real Japanese breakfast ;)
Cons: That we couldn't use the 9 public Onsen in Shibu Onsen. We have read online that you can use them when you stay in ryokan in Shibu Onsen. We didn't read anything about it in the summery of the hotel or the reviews (so maybe we could have known), but this was a little disappointment for us and want to let the next visitors know via this review. You can use the nice onsen in the Ryokan and number 9 in the centre of Shibu. (a 10 minutes walk)
9.2 Excellent
Pros: great home cooked meals. we love the home feeling
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The breakfasts and evening meals were absolutely excellent, not to mention huge! The hosts were amazingly friendly and helpful, despite not speaking English. The hot spring is also very nice and relaxing.
Cons: It is a little walk from Shiba Onsen, but not too far. We didn't realise that Wednesday is early closing/holiday for many of the restaurants in the town, so had problems finding anywhere to eat/drink. If you can plan your visit to avoid Wednesday, I'd do that.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Although the owners doesn’t speak English, they were super organized, and verry nice. The monkey park nearby worth to visit.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The owners were absolutely wonderful! Very helpful, friendly, and kind. It was wonderful to soak in the Onsen every evening and morning. I had the place to myself in the mornings, great way to start the day.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The owners were so accommodating, incredibly friendly and helpful. It was a lovely short walk to the town and the outdoor onsen was amazing. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. Monkey park was a 40min walk from this property it was a beautiful walk through a forest.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We got picked up from the train station which was really nice. They also bring you to the monkey park and back to the train station. We got a warm welcome and the staff is very friendly. The room was big, clean and had airconditioning. Also there was an onsen available with a kimono ready in your room.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The dinner was delicious! The hosts were lovely. The onsen was really great. We stayed with our 3 children and it was a great place for them to feel comfortable for their first onsen experience. We had a really lovely 2 nights at Miyama. Being picked up and dropped to the station was really helpful after the long journey there.
Cons: The first impressions of the area and exterior of hotel are not great although this is outweighed by the warm welcome and great experience we had. Also a little disappointing not to be part of the shibu onsen 9 onsen visit experience. Although our kids wouldn’t have been comfortable with that anyway. It is not a long walk to the town. Also close to the monkey park.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hosts are adorable, they fixed us a dinner when we arrived late. They also took us to the monkey park and also back to the train station without asking for any extra payment
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The value is great. If you’re looking to visit the monkey park on a budget, definitely stay here. They will pick you up from the station, take you to the station and the monkey park for free, whenever you need. The owners are SO sweet, and it really feels like you’re staying with a family friend. The futons were comfortable, the onsen was nice and relaxing (but very hot!!) and the FOOD! The food was the absolute best. Tastes better than my grandmother in-law’s cooking, and that’s saying something.
Cons: There really is nothing much in immediate walking distance from the ryokan, so you’ll want to bring some entertainment and snacks with you unless you catch the once an hour bus to shibu onsen or other attractions. Also it’s not a shibu onsen hotel, so you can’t enter the onsens at shibu onsen like everyone else (though the waku waku onsen they have is just fine!)

Pros: comfortable stay. can have onsen after everyday’s akii. public onsen is nice, with outdoor hot spring. staffs at reception speaks perfect English and are very helpful.
Cons: still have 200-300m walk from hotel gate to ski area. It will take a while if you have skii equipments on.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is very well situated in the middle of all the ski fields. The staff were all so friendly and helpful. The Japanese food was five star and we ate like kings. The massage chairs were a godsend at the end of a days skiiing, as was the on-site Onsen. The western beds and rooms were very comfortable and overall, the hotel facilities were ideal for a week in the snow.
Cons: Nothing.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Practically ski in/out Easy ski holiday - all you need to do it get to the hotel, from there, the staff can arrange ski gear hire for you out of their basement for very competitive prices, provide discount lift coupons (to be exchanged at the lifts for a discount of about 20%), provide delicious healthy breakfast and dinners, comfortable rooms, great onsens and wonderful staff members behind it all. This has become our regular ski place in Japan and we always look forward to coming back, it truly is a care free holiday for us, and standards are always high.
Cons: The accomodation is dated and not what you would label luxurious but its clean, well taken care of and feels like a place the staff are very proud of. Its comfortable and personal, and much more memorable than the big hotels I've stayed at before...my husband would like to add - more dessert at dinner, they are delicious!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very clean. Great simple healthy Japanese style breakfast/dining. Booking included all onsens (the "private" onsen was not in-room, but can still use). Excellent service (good English, quick email turnaround, friendly and helpful staff, they even drove us to the bus stop on a very snowy day, which was just a block away)! Close to Hasuike bus stop. Basic ski/snowboard rentals available but also close to a rental shop. Had a small tuckshop, pingpong room, massage chairs, reading & computer area. Upon request, they helped us arrange delivery of our equipment to the airport (need to pay extra) so we could carry less on our way to Tokyo...
Cons: If you're looking for a ski-in/out hotel then you need to know this hotel is not exactly beside a chair lift. You'll need to walk a few hundred meters and ski down a slope to reach Giant chairlifts. Wasn't a problem for us though.
7.5 Good
Pros: Good Japanese breakfast and dinner. I stayed four nights, no repetition. Staffs are gentle and helpful. Good for skiing holidays.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff are incredible. So sweet, they go above and beyond. Even though the hotel is just a 2 minute walk from the bus stop, the owner came in the van to pick us up so we didn't have to carry our bags - so kind of him. I really can't thank the staff enough, they made our stay very memorable! The food is also fantastic and of an extremely high standard. We tried so many new and different things at breakfast and dinner which we loved. The outdoor onsen is great too.
Cons: The lighting in our room could have been a bit softer.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Room was spacious, enjoyed massage chair in room & loved the free private onsen. Dinner was excellent . All staff were very helpful and friendly. Bus dropped us off & picked us up at the hotel door and there was a free ski shuttle bus only 80 meters away.
Cons: Nothing.

Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were amazingly helpful and attentive. The onzen was fabulous. Food terrific. Facilities for skiing second to none.

7.9 Good
Pros: Really nice and spacious room. The staff was very helpful and friendly.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The family who run the ryokan were wonderful. They were very helpful, friendly and accommodating. The mother was a wonderful cook and we had a fantastic breakfast on both mornings, the father dropped us up to the snow monkeys entrance and without us knowing organised for his friend who worked there to let him know when we returned so he could drive us back. Their adult daughter takes care of meeting you on arrival and answering your queries. We stayed in traditional rooms which were very spacious, comfortable and clean. The accommodation is a 10 - 15 minute walk from the station but they will drop you back to the staion.
Cons: The only problem for me was I am bigger in size so my hip and shoulder were touching the floor through the traditional mattress. However they had additional ones in the cupboards which solved that problem
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Run by a family, very sweet people, will do everything for you. Basic but great place to stay, Japanese style room, comfortabel. A bit out dated but clean and everything is there

Cons: It was a little far from the center of town.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Our stay was perfect and the service level of the staff was awesome. Even the owner of the onsen greeted us personally while we were having our dinner. Dinner spread was good too. We will definitely be back.
Cons: Nothing to dislike but just feel that dinner portion may be a bit small for people with bigger appetite.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location. Close to the snow monkey park. You can easily walk to many restaurants and the train station. Lovely onsen, but it is very hot. We stayed in a room with the mats on the floor and it was very comfortable. The room was very large. The bathroom had two sinks and was quite large as well. We also enjoyed the multi-course dinner at the restaurant. It was a wonderful experience and the food was very good. Very nice welcome drink and they had happy hour drinks in the afternoon. Staff was very nice and helpful. It is a great place to stay for two nights while exploring the snow monkey park.
Cons: Nothing.

Cons: Everything was perfect. Go there!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Traditional ryokan in beautiful street! Very friendly staff. You can visit all onsens in the street near the ryokan.
Cons: The onsens in the street were a bit disappointing.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Staff was extremely helpful. They helped us with parking our car and let us use the ropes and Onsen keys even after we checked out already. The room was traditional Japanese and we loved every bit of it.
7.9 Good
Pros: The staff were terrific, could not fault their attitude. Shuttle service to/from the train station, the Snow Monkey Park. Small fridge on each floor for guests to use. Hot & cold water available. For its dingyness, the place was spotlessly clean. Lovely rural setting.
Cons: Insufficient shower facilities - 2 showers for a maximum of 40 guests...seriously?! I wasn't aware that I had to climb 2 flights of stairs to the room that my husband and I were assigned to on 3F. Having to traipse downstairs to 2F for the women's toilet (the men's toilet was on 3F) & to the ground floor/1F for showers. Tiny box-like showers. The fact that guests aren't informed that the ¥150/person charge to use the 9 onsens in the township is built into the tariff. The place looks somewhat dingy/tired. Could do with some repairs.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Friendly staff. They offered free ride to monkey park. Also, apparently, with this hostel you get free access to 9 hot baths in the area which I unfortunately didn't have time to try
Cons: Bathrooms are on the first floor when my room was on second. Bit too pricey as for the hostel. I paid 3150¥
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The location was very convenient: just outside from Keisei Skyliner Station. The staff were very friendly.
Cons: The rooms were dated, and decoration was poor. The bathroom shower was difficult to use and flooded the floor. The aircon did not work well and we were hot!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Lovely staff who picked us up from train station. let us store luggage and organised our return with taxi to the airport. They also organised a private spa star gazing experience for me and my partner as well as a shuttle service to the monkey park. Great map and info on the town provided and the bar/restaurant felt like an inviting space to meet and talk with people. Lovely Japanese style room with robes provided that we enjoyed walking around the town in to take in all 9 local onsen. Had very comfortable sleep. Would love to come back when a bit cooler to really enjoy the onsen experience and explore the greater area!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very nice place! An older house with lonely staff, great food, free transportation from the train station and to the Monkey park, on the main střet of Shibu Onsen!
Cons: All good

7.1 Good
Pros: Friendly staff, close to yudanaka station, onsen
Cons: food was normal
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Overall the hotel met our expectations. the rooms were spacious and the food (breakfast) excellent and varied. the onsen was well appointed. Staff were very helpful, we would stay again.
Cons: Yudanaka is a very quiet town with few facilities and a relatively poor choice of restaurants, though we did enjoy some very well priced and tasty food. Outside the ski season it has little appeal except as a base to see the snow monkeys. Unless you are a big Onsen fan two nights would be ample in the place.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We got a lovely Japanese style room that was hugely spacious - could have accommodation 4 people if needed and had a view of the mountains. Staff were very welcoming and made sure we were well looked after. Facilities were clean. The included breakfast set is amazing - we had the Japanese kaiseki style which came with about 10 assorted dishes! You can book a private session on the hotel's rooftop onsen for 2150yen which is well worth it. Located only 2-3 minutes walk from the train station. Tip: you can rent electric bikes from the public onsen located behind the train station for a quick day trip down the road to Shibu onsen (must be returned by 4pm)
9.6 Excellent
Pros: It was super traditional. You got to try the private bath during the night!!! The moon was shining. It was great!!!!
5.8 Okay
Pros: Good location short walk to the Yamanuka station. Clean room although the air in the room was not great.
Cons: The Onsen/ spa area was not well maintained. The property requires maintenance/refurb in general. We have stayed in better properties across Japan for less money and breakfast was included. No value for money.

Cons: The WiFi did not work up on our floor (4) at all. Even when connected in the lobby it was almost unusable.

Cons: - Private bath is great but need to pay extra (2200 yen). - Limited number of bath, 2public and 1 private, compare to Kanaguya Ryokan, they have 3 public and 5 private, all free no extra charge.

Cons: The Staff's english skill is lacking.

Pros: The place was incredibly accommodating from the moment we arrived at Yudanaka Station. I really have no complaints. The staff were super friendly and the public baths were gorgeous - Much better than the neighbouring Shibu Onsen which all share 9 onsens which are like small boxes compared to the expansive ones that we had.

Pros: Wonderful hosts - so friendly and accommodating . They drove us to the snow monkeys and drove us to the station and to lunch - lovely breakfast in homely atmosphere
Cons: Ladies Onsen a little bit cool Men’s hot spring too hot
8.8 Excellent
Pros: This place is special. The owners are sixth generation inn keepers, 160 years! The level of service in fantastic, from the moment you walk in the door you are greeted with a smile and they are asking what they can do for you. They drove us to the monkey park and had plenty of great recommendations. We went through the alpine route and he even arranged for our bags to be shipped to our next hotel. The Onsen is fantastic, go for the outdoor private Onsen, totally worth it.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Warm comfortable large room with a nice view to the mountains. Mr Yumoto is a great host. He accommodated our early arrival allowing us to check in early. He kindly drove us to the Monkey Park and offered to pick us up. We took the option of a nice walk back to our accommodation with a detailed map and directions given to us by Mr Yumoto. We were also given the option of using the onsen as a couple which was a great experience. Mr Yumoto has wealth of tourist information about the surrounding area and towns nearby.
Cons: Nothing really except no lift.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This property is very centrally located in the little town. We found it so sweet that Mr Yamuto personally drove us to the Monkey Park. He then gave us a phone number and we were able to use the gift shop phone to ask him to come pick us up! Monkey Park is a must see :) His wife made us a delicious Japanese style breakfast one morning for a very reasonable price. They offered us helpful hints about how to enjoy the area. Also, bonus! They have a little outdoor bath that sits atop a big hilltop, with beautiful mountain views. It's a 3 minute walk from the hotel accommodation. We were able to rent it privately for 45 minutes. It was absolutely fabulous!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The rooms were lovely & a good size. The futons were very comfortable with good sheets & dunas. The onsen was good & hot & available 24/7. There is also an outdoor onsen which we didn't discover due to our poor understanding as it was explained to us in pretty good English. We were able to use the washing machine & powder at no charge. The owners were delightful & very helpful & drove us up to the snow monkey park which was fabulous!! It is a very beautiful area & well worth a visit. I would stay again.
Cons: The hotel was old & a bit tired but the rooms were lovely & comfortable & very clean, as was the lavatory on our floor.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Nice and good sized room with onsen in hotel. Lovely rooms and lovely innkeeper who immediately offered to drive us to the monkey park the moment he heard that we wanted to go before it closes and time was tight. Good and sumptuous Japanese breakfast at good value. Wish we could spend more time there. We were lucky to catch the summer festival as well. Loved the entertainment and fruits we bought there.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff was super helpfull in assisting with transport to the snow monkey park and the station. Japanese breakfast was also very good. Thank you very much!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A lovely Ryokan run by a lovely helpful family. Large comfortable rooms . We were also driven to the Monkey Park and taken to the station free of charge. The breakfasts were plentiful and delicious. I left my phone in the room when leaving for the train. The owner retrieved it for me when I rang him and he delivered it down to the railway station to give to me. Wonderful kind man.

7.1 Good
Pros: Good atmosphere Hot spring facility is good With free parking space is convenient
Cons: Room needs maintenance Staff mainly speak Japanese not able to help with attractions booking
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very beautiful traditional ryokan hotel and room. Staff were extremely kind, even if they didn't speak English (they know just some single random words). Momoyana onsen is astonishing: simply amazing. Very good japanese dinner and breakfast. Near Yudanaka station: you can reach the hotel walking barely 10 minutes.
Cons: Maybe the location: the town Yudanaka is not so beautiful as Shibu Onsen. But you can reach the latter walking 15-20 minutes.
2.9 Mediocre
Pros: Real Japanese traditional experience, nice and calm place.
Cons: The Onsen was closed for cleaning between 9.30-14.00 so we missed half of the experience. The staff did not tell us about this, very poor information and none English speaking staff. We were confused and nobody could either explain or help us. Very frustrating!

Pros: Brilliant authentic Japanese experience. Wonderful staff. Onsens were superb
Cons: Traditional beds may take some getting used to
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owners were very friendly and made the whole experience amazing. The room was very comfortable, everything you could wish for from a ryokan. It did not feel as a hotel, but closer to your own home. Beds were comfortable, and the room offered a nice sitting area with great views. There were 3 options in the hotel as in Onsens (1 private, 1 outdoor, and 1 public indoor (but separated M/F). All were really clean and comfortable. The hotel is located in Shibu Onsen (that is the bus stop), when you arrive by train you can very easily take the bus to the hotel for roughly 200 Yen.
Cons: Nothing!

Pros: Staff is very helpful and the hotel is very clean.
Cons: Location is a bit far from train station.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: It was a real Japanese experience. We learned the basic customs, clothes and food, in a relaxed and respectful environment. The staff were full attentive and friendly. The food was full of flavour, healthy, appetising and beautifully presented. We appreciated the private bath. Advice about going out for the day was helpful, and when we arrived back they asked how it went. Very friendly.
Cons: Leaving.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The hospitality of the staff was amazing, very friendly and accommodating. It was our first time staying in a ryokan so comfort wise the beds weren’t what we are used to, but otherwise very spacious room. Very clean and really well organised. A driver picked us up from the train station and took us back on our return. He even drove us to the monkey park.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: They drove us to the entrance of the Snow Monkey Park and picked us up later. The room was massive and we really enjoyed staying there.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful hotel with great service.
Cons: We had two very small children yet they had the same breakfast and dinner portions as an adult. It resulted in a lot of wasted food.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were very welcoming to the perfect traditional Japanese Ryokan experience. The inn is immaculate and the service incredible. From the pick up at Yudanaka station to the drop off back we always felt looked after. They even had mini-yugata for our two daughters which were very cute. The onsen in the ryokan itself is a good size, with an outdoor bath on the balcony where you can look out onto the mountains. They were mostly empty whenever we wanted to use them but there is also a private family bath you can use. The food is lovely and our daughters both are well. Would strongly advise booking meals there.
Cons: Nothing
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Outdoor onsen was amazing. Staff were helpful and gave us a traditional Japanese experience.
Cons: Everything with the accommodation was perfect. The staff were polite and helpful. The only thing that wasn't great was there were not a lot of places open in the town to eat.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were so accommodating, the location was perfectly in the centre of the onsen and the Ryokan itself was absolutely beautiful. The perfect experience in the Japanese countryside. Please come here!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was a lovely Ryokan in Shibu Onsen at a good price. The Staff were lovely and helpful. The food was good and we were very comfortable. It was very well located across from the 9th public Onsen (the best one!). They drove us to the Monkey park on our last day and delivered our luggage to a spot near the train station so we would have enough time at the monkey park. Really excellent service!! A++++++ Would definitely stay here again.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Dinner was amazing, one of the best kaiseki we had in Japan over 10 years. The possibility to use other onsets is great.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: There is private toilet inside the room. stuffs very warm-hearted, good meal , and good Ofuro. It's very near the bus stop. there is no private pick up from train station or ski yard , but the bus is somehow convenient
Cons: You have to get to the hotel by yourself (Bus or taxi)from the train station.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Every thing staff were so helpful let us check in early and ran us around at no cost.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Absolutely outstanding customer service, from pick up at the station to arranging shuttle/luggage pick up in the morning to see the snow monkeys. Accommodating with dietary restrictions as well. The access to the 9 public onsens was fantastic and this ryokan also has private Onsen and outdoor Onsen for guest to use. The ryokan experience is a must do! Would definitely stay here again!

9.2 Excellent
Pros: I like the historic setting of the place. The service was excellent, friendly. The food was delicious. I like having our own onsen. free transportation to the monkey park and train station. Buses were convient.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The room was big, clean and comfy, I didn't want to leave the futon ever again! The room came with complementary manju and a tea set! The provided yukatas were very pretty and clean. The owners were exceptionally nice, even driving us up the mountain to see the monkeys! The breakfast was a treat in traditional Japanese setting.
Cons: We couldn't find the outside onsen - we were told later that they were in a different building we hadn't known about. I felt that the onsen water wasn't very clean (there were some particles that may have been plant material in one), although it wasn't enough to impact our enjoyment. The onsen is not very big though (one bath per gender, one of them not much bigger than a yakuza)
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful big room. Morning prayer was such an experience. Shared bathroom was so nice and clean. Friendly staff.
Cons: Shame you don;t get to find out more about monks every day life. The town is very quiet.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Extremely genuine and caring hosts who provided a warm welcoming, stay and farewell. We were a family of five and had plenty of space and Onsen was great.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We love the interior design of the ryokan, the well prepared breakfast and dinner, and the warm hospitality. Thank you very much to the ryokan owner Miyagi San.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Staff is very kind and helpful.
Cons: most restaurant close during my trip. no minimart.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The service was beautifully done
Cons: Nothing!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Authentic Japanese ryokan. Owners went out of their way to accommodate us - free pick up from Yudanaka train station and drop off to Snow Monkey Park (we walked back). On-site onsen, with 2 public onsen within 100m. BIG room, which we've come to realise is unusual in Japan...
Cons: Located in Andai Onsen - which is 100m from Shibu Onsen - but which meant we could not visit the 9 onsen in Shibu Onsen like most tourists staying there (though as mentioned, ryokan had it's own onsen and there were 2 others in immediate vicinity).
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Every thing was perfect Very clean and comfortable, The owners of the place are a husband and his wife that are the most good and helpful people I have ever met. The breakfast was delicious and very special I highly recommend this place
9.2 Excellent
Pros: We had a lovely overnight stay at the Andaikan ryokan. The staff are extremely helpful and kind, they go above and beyond to make your trip enjoyable. They kindly offered to drop us off at the monkey park information centre base which is about a 5-10 minute drive from the ryokan itself and from there you walk 25 mins up and through the path in the woods to the main site, so the location of the ryokan is very good. The hosts also recommended a few places to check out on the walk back, including a sake museum / distillery. The walk back is pleasant and downhill, so a good opportunity to explore the little onsen (hot springs) town and local shrines in your own time. Andaikan is easy to get to, we got a bus from the main station - it took less than 10 minutes. The hosts also lent us yukata to wear throughout our stay and arranged for us to have private use of their indoor onsen for 45mins. They did the same for others parties staying there and it was well worth it - super relaxing after our walk back! For dinner we walked up the road to a small place nearby and there are several others so getting dinner won't be a problem, just be mindful that some places shut relatively early (e.g. 10pm). We also had a traditional Japanese ryokan style breakfast at Andaikan during our stay which was really nice and culturally unique, well worth trying it! As for our room, it was spacious and had a private toilet, but the showers were located nearby our room and shared with others. The decor is very Japanese (obviously) and quaint, it's simple but tidy and I have no complaints. If you prefer modern style hotels or are very picky this might not be for you, but if you are in Japan to experience the local culture and people then I highly recommend this place and the wonderful hosts! They also gave us a lift to the train station when we left and there were a couple of other nice touches - which I think are best kept secret to those who visit.

Cons: add breakfast option

Pros: A true Japanese expereance, the meal, room and Onsen was fantastic. Our host helped make the expereance great as she explained the traditions in English to us. The location was perfect for the walk to the monkey park and temple. The room was spacouse with all the little additions like the fridge, tea service, safe etc. it’s a great place to stay and relax.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I absolutely cannot fault our stay in Kotobuki. Our host Aki-san was incredibly welcoming and went above and beyond to make our stay incredibly special, including taking us out to see some of the local sights. My partner actually proposed to me in the hotel (the surroundings of the onsen are exquisite) and after finding this out, Aki went even further to make our stay extra special, including organising a lovely dinner for us at a restaurant nearby. We were treated not just as guests, but felt we made a friend as well. The property itself is great and has a really beautiful Japanese traditional aesthetic. It is also located right next to the entrance to Snow Monkey park, so if that is your reason for visiting Yamanouchi, as ours was, it really is a fantastic place to stay. Out of all the 6 locations we visited on our Japan trip, this was by far our favourite. We can't wait to come back and stay again!
Cons: Nothing!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was really nice! Aki, from the hotel also showed me around in the village, very nice and I didn’t expect it. I really felt welcome. The onsen is in the middle of nature. Great location!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Great onsen, being outdoors on a cold night and immersed in hot spring water made for an unforgettable experience.
Cons: This is an older property which could use an upgrade... It is somewhat pricy for what it offers.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was by far my best stay in Japan. The room was large and fantastic with so many amenities: a personal sink, tea set, TV, yukata, and a nice table and chairs by the window so you can watch the snow. Aki the innkeeper is fantastic, very kind and accommodating. She speaks great English and we had a great conversation during and after dinner. We drank together and talked about Studio Ghibli movies. She was kind enough to show me a landmark in town that inspired Spirited Away. The food served was fantastic! Far more food than I could ever eat, but I got to sample so much because of it. I had sukiyaki, sashimi, marinated octopus, broiled fish filet, miso soup, rice, and vegtables and more for dinner. For breakfast was an onsen egg, rice, grilled whole fish, a seaweed and veggie sampler, cabbage rolls, boiled veggies, and miso soup. Everything was so well presented and tasted great! The onsen was small, but pretty in the snow. I went in several time and it was so soothing I tingled all over afterward. I even met some people in the bath and we talked in simple English and Japanese for a while. The ryokan is right next to the Snow Monkey Park, so you can get to hiking right away. To top it all off Aki was kind enough to take me to the bus stop so I could head back to Nagano.
Cons: Nothing, everything was divine.
6.7 Good
Pros: It was as close as you can get to the monkeys and the taxidermy bears made us LOL
Cons: On the middle of nowhere - we'll right next to monkeys but nothing else around open, just one restaurant. No staff around apart from a cleaner between 3 and 6pm, no sign of anyone managing the place and no showers apart from in onsen, strange
6.3 Good
Pros: Location near the monkey park. People in area friendly and very helpful. Lots of monkeys in park, one in pool.
Cons: Host/hostess took time off as we were only guests. Very nice lady looking after place spoke no English. No dinner as requested but real problem was no communication as to if this would be offered. Only one place to eat breakfast and dinner, which we had to find ourselves as well as public transport info in place little English. Wifi didn’t work until am we left. No shower, had to use onset. Toilet cubicles tiny, husband had to open door to pull pants up. Shared toilets (two) at other end of building to our room. Too high price for inconveniences.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Kotobuki is steps away from the Snow Monkey park and a short walk (20 mins) away from Yudanaka. The hotel was clean and spacious, and Aki was a wonderful host! We did the kaiseki dinner, and there was so much delicious food. The onsen were a perfect finish to a long day of adventure. Highly recommend!!!!
5.4 Okay
Pros: Very close to the Snow Monkey Park.
Cons: No staff around (probably because we were one of the only guests that night) except a lady who did not speak any English and who did not recognize us the second time we came in. No pick up service from or to the station (we had to take the bus), no possibility to have dinner or breakfast. For dinner at least there was a restaurant nearby we could go to, but we could not have breakfast anywhere near the hotel. So no breakfast before going to the Monkey Park. In short: the hotel lacked all kind of service, did not make us feel welcome at all and was overpriced for what we got in return. Not recommended!

Cons: The rooms only have toilets and the shower/bath is onsen-type. We did not mind this but for people who doesnt like the onsen idea, please be aware.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location ,location, and location. This is our second trip staying here and it was just as good as the first time, maybe better. The service from when getting picked up to the food breakfast and dinner, location to ticket box and lifts, its a great experience and would stay there again. The pastries are a real treat as well as the afternoon onsen. The owner is dynamic, just ask and it will happen.
Cons: Rental gear perhaps needs an upgrade.
6.7 Good
Pros: Nice croissants for breakfast. Good quality of ski rental and easy to get ski passes through hotel. Staff always helpful although not very fluent in English. Cuisine not bad actually.
Cons: Showers at basement level at hot spring. No privacy when taking shower on stool - traditional Japanese style. Washing machine difficult to get working and dryers not drying at all.

7.9 Good
Pros: Right on the slope Copious breakfast, apple pie, apple Onsen Helpfull staff
Cons: Food quality in dinner varies a lot. Some kastsu looks more like kombini quality level. Some cakes are otherwise excellent. Too small lounge area.
7.9 Good
Pros: Right in front of the slopes Reasonable dinner & breakfast Onsen
Cons: Need a car to get there.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The location is good and the staff are all friendly and helpful. In fact, they have a great kitchen so their meals are all tasty no matter of Japanese and/or western styles. I super love their home made bread in the morning.
Cons: The heating system in changing room of onsen needs to be enhanced; A bit difficult for me to manage the luggage from car park to front desk upon arrival & vice versa for departure on icy ground.
