Pros: A stay at the Union is a very different experience. With its wood & leather intimate library, its hundred year old and very quaint and charming wood-walled hundred-year old elevator, and its nods to Victorian expectations in dress and behavior, it is a throwback (that's a compliment) to a long ago British style and elegance. We were a little intimidated before our arrival by the idea of a dress code, but, though it's described in very stark terms, is actually little more than common sense and imposes no discomfort: basically, don't wear tatters, don't show your neck, and cover your toes and you've probably complied with the code. The breakfasts are first rate, and the waiters are friendly and highly professional, but do remember that the pace of service is more likely to be 19th rather than 21st century. The rooms, including the beds, are very comfortable. One thing I'd note is the showers: my wife and I have traveled on six continents and have worked out a cooperative arrangement in which the first to bathe describes to the other the complexities of the hot&cold water faucets. We've seen some tough ones and some real engineer's fantasies, but the Union's require a three-dimensional chess mastery of overhead and telephone showers along with proper jiggering of temperature, and in a four day stay, neither of us really figured it out to our satisfaction. Meanwhile, the location of the hotel is excellent and you have a great view of the Parliament from the front balcony. We go to Victoria two or three times a year, and I'd gladly stay at the Inn of the Union again.

Pros: Overall a nice old hotel, but I would not say that it is a luxury stay. Breakfast was very good and included with the cost of the room, so that was actually a treat
Restaurant has a dress code, so keep that in mind before you pack.

Pros: I loved the breakfast options, the menu exceeded my expectations with the option of gourmet dishes. The location of the pub right next to the water was a wonderful place to eat breakfast and pop in for a drink. The welcome voucher for the beer and chocolate pairing was a surprise and very much appreciated. The staff were lovely and efficient. The room was clean and well appointed with a kettle, tea and coffee etc.

Cons: The shower curtain was clingy? I didn’t have access to a fridge to store the charcuterie platter I made for a party?

Cons: I thought the room was a bit small (room 4, upstairs) but it had a lot of character and was comfortable. Because the room is located in a heritage house, I understand that the layout is not going to be the same as you would get for a modern building, but for two people to get ready at the same time, it was a bit of a squeeze. For such an old house, it was relatively quiet, but that will probably depend on the other guests that were staying there too.
