Laurel House - Penrith - Bedroom
9
9.7 Excellent (65 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Visitors to Penrith will find that the Laurel House is a fantastic accommodation choice. When guests have some time on their hands they can make use of the onsite facilities. For those driving themselves, parking is provided on site.
5.8 Okay
Pros: Large bed, large breakfast, good location
Cons: Broken shower that couldn’t be used as it was scalding only (owners blamed us for breaking it!), shower screen that didn’t fit properly so it kept swinging open every time we closed it (owners said we didn’t close it properly!), loose hairs scattering the bathroom on arrival (owners said they were ours even though we had just arrived and not used anything!). Owners do not take any criticism at all which is not good as they should use it to improve rather than pass blame.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The house and gardens are beautiful. We were made very welcome with a pot of tea and homemade scones. Before our arrival Jeff had suggested he make a booking at the local pub for our evening meal. Glad he did as it was very popular, and the food was absolutely superb. 8.0 Excellent
Pros: Our stay at Laurel House was without doubt the best weekend break we have ever had in many years. Jeff and Alex were the most attentive, caring proprietors one could wish for. We felt so much a part of the home, particularly so, on our Sunday morning breakfast, which we shared, and enjoyed, with a Scottish couple, and two Japanese archaeology students. A really "international breakfast". Jeff and Alex's attention to their guests, ensuring they had wonderfully comfortable beds, and quite incredible breakfasts, is what they are all about. They have based their provision on what they would want - they have excelled! We will be back within the next month or so, and have already recommended "Laurel House" to our friends.
Cons: Going home!
7.7 Good
Pros: Alex & Jeff were very friendly and accommodating. My fiance and I had to get up very early the following day and Alex & Jeff had no problem serving us breakfast at a much earlier time. Jeff's home made bread at breakfast and the home made preserves were a lovely addition to an absolutley lovely, peaceful and relaxing stay.

We had the Harmony room which has French windows opening up to the gardens and a wide view of the lake. The room itself was spacious and well furnished. We had dinner and breakfast and the quality of the food lived up to its high reputation. We had tables by the window, again with great views over the lake.
Cons: The service in the restaurant did not quite meet our expectations. For example, on our first night we ordered the taster menu at dinner with a flight of wines and the wines did not arrive until the after the second course. The sommelier seemed to be working from a script when describing the wines and was a little stuck when quizzed further. On the second night when we had the a la carte menu we had to repeatedly ask for the wine to be poured. These are little things but not what one would expect from a hotel of this calibre.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: excellent breakfast - large selection - location was quiet, with excellent views - possibly remote, one hour from most of the listed Lake District "go to" places.
Cons: 99%perfect - two more halogen ceiling lights in the bathroom would have given better lighting
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Sharrow Bay Country House enjoys magnificent views across the water to faraway hills
Cons: The main access road to the hotel crosses a bridge that is being rebuilt requiring a significant and frustrating detour to get to the hotel

Pros: Comfy and clean! Food AMAZING. Staff very friendly
Cons: Slightly over priced as rooms very basic, but clean. Other places in the area much nicer rooms for less money.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: All of the staff were welcoming and friendly. We received a call during the day to see if we would like table booked for the evening. The food was excellent and highly recommended. This can also be said about the breakfast, which was plentiful.
Cons: Nothing springs to mind, we had a pleasant stay and will be booking again sometime in the future.
5.0 Okay
Pros: Once the unbelievably loud blues band had wrapped up, the place had a relaxed vibe. Dinner was delicious and the serving staff excellent.
Cons: I was shocked at the attitude of the proprietor when I mentioned I lived in Scotland. ‘Don’t mention that, you’re in Cumbria now, Scotland’s the enemy’. This attitude was repeated at breakfast, along with groan-inducing mimicking of our Australian accents. In 12 years living in Scotland, having stayed at many accommodation establishments, I have never seen the same attitude directed towards English guests. Also, we requested a twin but were given a double (could have been poor communication from booking.com, in fairness) and the mouldy grouting in the shower really should have been seen to.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Food was excellent. Great place to eat in the evening. The wine is lovely.
Cons: Be a good idea to have some veggie sausages on hand for vegetarians.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great food, very friendly and welcoming staff, nice location just 5 miles from motorway

Pros: The bar was a little pricey . I dont mind paying over for good drinks but £13 for a glass if wine was ridiculous .. but apart from that the hotel / staff / accomodation was fantastic
7.9 Good
Pros: The staff were really friendly and attentive
Cons: A proper shower as opposed to a curtain rail in the bath
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Really lovely hotel! It’s situated in a perfect location that’s easy to get to the shops/restaurants and to sightsee The breakfast is great and the overall character of the hotel is beautiful.
Cons: The rooms are okay for what you pay and the bathroom isn’t great. Shower is a bit ridiculous as well! Also annoying how quickly the pool and hot tub fills up with children.

Cons: Nothing :-)
7.3 Good
Pros: My husband and I like to stay at the north lakes hotel because it is a wonderful halfway point when we are travelling down south and we know we will be given first class service. We also enjoy the homely log fires etc. This Hotel gives us everything we expect from a Hotel.
Cons: On arrival we sometimes feel that some areas are fully occupied with business people on mobiles and computers treating these areas as they would an office.
5.0 Okay
Pros: the spa facilities were excellent and the staff were very helpfull and good parking facilities.
Cons: I thought £145 for room only was expensive and that the bedroom and bathroom should be updated for that sort of money. Also the breakfast service could be more efficient
7.3 Good
Pros: Nice, clean, good quality hotel with good facilities including, of course, the Pool and Spa. Kids room with Wii, PS2, Pool table, Air Hockey and boarad games was a nice addition. The room was very well appointed with a very high quality bathroom and nice furnishings. TV had a number of Sky channels. Overall a very nice place to stay.
Cons: Room was a little noisy, not so much in the night but certainly in the morning when people were in the corridor outside. I wouldn't let this put me off returning though.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Very nice welcome and all the staff tried very hard to make the stop enjoyable. Chap who sorted our bikes into the store was excellent and smiled away even in the rain. Loved the place and will be back again. Perfect start to our long weekend away. Spar very good and kids loved the games room.
Cons: Think some of the meals were too expensive - ended up eating out as young family of four - too much for a short break.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: It was all lovely
Cons:
6.0 Good
Pros: Immediate email response to request for dinner reservations
Cons: somewhat impersonal
6.0 Good
Pros: Being upgraded to a suite
Cons: I thought the food in the restaurant was a bit disappointing, it wasn't as good as I'd have expected. My duck was pretty tasteless and the scallops were drowning in cheese and fat.

6.4 Good
Pros: Attractive decor downstairs, room clean albeit very small, good clean bathroom with good shower, good quality products used in the breakfast, even the tea was good, unlike a lot of hotels in England. Having a free car park is a bonus.
Cons: Some of the upstairs decor was a bit unusual, and the door to my room was shabby, which undermined the superb appearance of the ground floor decor.
