9.2 Excellent
Pros: Food was awesome!!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Our room with the private onsen was excellent! The room was very clean and they provided us with complete amenities. The staff were really friendly. We also availed for the half-board and the dinner was really delicious. I would recommend for those booking this hotel to avail for the dinner and breakfast as they are both worth the money and will save you time as well. For anyone who wants to relax and experience staying in a Japanese-style hotel, I would recommend booking here especially the room with the private onsen.
Cons: It would be better if the payment would go be done directly through websites such as booking.com or any other trusted website. The email that was sent by the hotel looked a bit dodgy so I was hesitant to pay through the PayPal link that was sent. I had to confirm first and make a call to the hotel to make sure that the email was really sent by them.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Love the choices of bath available, the staff were very friendly and helpful, and the cleanliness.
Cons: The room is a bit smaller than I expected, but that's just because I stayed at a bigger room at a different ryokan.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: We like staying there we try japanase style room and we were enjoy there and love it . The private onsen was great and very clean. The staff very helpful.
Cons: We did not like the dinner .
9.2 Excellent
Pros: There are convenient bus shuttle services to and from nearby train stations. The staff is extremely helpful and always polite.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Lovely Kaiseki dinner and authentic Japanese breakfast was provided. The staff were considerate to remember my request for specific meal plan (no beef and pork) as one of my family members requested so. We expected to eat in our room but had our meals in the restaurant instead as our room only had one room. As such, staff came and set up the bedding in our tatami room when we were having our meal. The room though old, was impeccably clean. The indoor bath on the second floor was old but big and clean. The outdoor bath on the 5th floor was incredible and the locker/powder room area was big, warm and clean. The bath on the 8th and 11th floor were smaller than expected but still great to soak. While the bath on the 8th and 11th floor have a view of the lake, it must be noted that Yumotokan is still a distance away from the lake, as such, we could only see the lake in the distance. On the day of the check-out, we did not know that the shuttle bus to the station operated at certain timings only. The staff called us 2 taxis due to the amount of luggage we had. However, 1 taxi could only arrive 20 minutes later, which was too late for us as we had a train to catch. The staff asked us if we were alright with taking just 1 taxi (which could arrive 10 minutes earlier), but shared that one of us would have hug the extra suitcase due to the lack of boot space. We told them we were okay with that as it was only a 5 minute car ride to the station. However, the staff decided that that was not okay for us and found one of the front desk staff who was licensed to drive the shuttle to ferry us to the station. This was such a kind and generous gesture and we were so touched by it! Really thankful to the front desk staff at Yumotokan who helped us catch our train on time! This was our first onsen inn experience and the service standard and cleanliness standard of the hotel shone through.
Cons: It was difficult that many of the staff around the hotel could not speak English. However, they really really tried their best to help us and answer our queries. Really appreciate that! (Front desk staff were more equipped in speaking English though)

Pros: We were arranged in a room which we could see the sun rise, this was the first time in my life of seeing it. The open air onsen was great.
Cons: The bedding mattress was a little hard and thin.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Customer service, food hot spring
Cons: N/A
9.0 Excellent
Pros: My husband and I booked a night here at the recommendation of a friend. It was a very relaxing stay. We were picked up by the staff at the train station, which was very convenient. The staff was incredibly friendly. We loved the experience of wearing kimonos. Our room had an outdoor cedar bath, which was very luxurious and smelled incredible. The beds were so comfortable we decided to buy ourselves a feather duvet when we got home. The decor is very well put together and it felt like an authentic ryokan experience. Our view of the lake was great. There is a pretty little garden area that we enjoyed walking through. The food was very delicious, even though at times we did not know what we were eating. The dining experience was great and the staff was extremely polite and helpful. We decided to book a private onsen, and it was very relaxing and fun to do, just the two of us - I definitely recommend.
Cons: There was still some construction on the facade going on when we were there, which meant that there was some construction noise. It wasn't that disruptive but the experience (particularly the outdoor bath) would have been better without the noise.
7.9 Good
Pros: The customer service had contacted us frequently before arrival to ensure everything prepared properly in our stay.
Cons: Not many facilities in the inn provided. The onsen spa facilities are average.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The services is excellent and staff is very nice & polite. Their reply to my request is very quick. Love the shuttle bus services vey much. Room is with good view + clean + comfort.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I lived in the private onsen suite room, it has perfect view of the lake. The room was spotless clean. The dinner and breakfast were very nice. Highly recommended.

Featured amenities include complimentary newspapers in the lobby, luggage storage, and a safe deposit box at the front desk. 10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were all super friendly and provided great service! The breakfast was excellent! The bed was comfortable!
6.3 Good
Pros: - Staff was nice - Room was good
Cons: - The "view on the lake" is not really as described - There was cockroaches and insects in the onsen....
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very authentic experience of traditional ryokan. Loved the bath in room and at the rooftop. Pretty interior, big room, yukata, tea. Interesting and cute town, very friendly personal, picked us up from station and brought us back, japanese breakfast
Cons: Limited english, except one receptionist, but it didnt hinder the communication:) the town a bit empty, not a lot of food choices or much to see but for one or two days enough:) Considering the building there is specific smell, but it didnt bother much. Price for the private bath is a bit much in my opinion but i still loved the experience. But In overall we had amazing stay!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The service was outstanding, the staff were very welcoming and always friendly. The food was delicious and the baths though only 2 public ones, were comfortable for soaking. The private pool in our room was superb for anyone not wanting to use the public baths.
Cons: Wasn't much to see or do close by. Only 2 public onsen pools for each sex, they are probably the same in design which is probably why they don't swap them around.
7.1 Good
Pros: Dinner was great. Lots of variety and tasty dishes And room was great too, very authentic Japanese ryokan which is why we spent a bit extra on this one
Cons: Being rushed at our welcome drink, only sat down and had a sip before lady wanted to take us to room And wanted to have drink before dinner at 5.30 but got told we needed to go to dinner which we had booked for 6 Paying an onsen tax on check out that had not been explained to us Didn’t make it as a relaxing experience as hoped for. Felt always doing something wrong.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The quality of service in this smaller ryokan impressed me. We were slightly late and they sent someone in the street to look for us. We had a person assigned to us during our stay, and she made sure everything was perfect. We appreciated meeting the very cute and cuddly resident Shiba Inus. The room was lovely too. The food was great.
Cons: We were hoping for a scenic view of the lake. Our room did have a view of the lake, but not particularly scenic. We were hoping to find a nice lakefront area within walking distance from the hotel, but to no avail. The onsen facilities were great, however I wished there was a cold bath and a steam room in addition to the indoors + outdoors hotbaths.
Biwako Hotel - Ōtsu - Building
4
8.6 Excellent (5,122 reviews)

Featured amenities include a 24-hour front desk, luggage storage, and laundry facilities. Event facilities at this hotel consist of conference space and a meeting room. 10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location good
Cons: None
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Good location, room space enough, very good view to the lake, good facilities
7.5 Good
Pros: The lake facing view is nice. The hot spring water quality is good for my personal liking. Although not in the same level as Gero onsen water, it is among the better ones in our Japan experience. The every 15 minutes shuttle service is nice; some places have cut down on such services.
Cons: It is a 4 stars hotel with a 3 star breakfast. The food is not on par with more than 20 onsen hotels we have visited in Japan. The matter was made worse when the breakfast was so crowded with seemingly insufficient staff. Except for the front desk staff, most other personnel were very difficult to communicate in English. The hot spring personal grooming area has limited space with second rate supplies and looked rather unsophiscated.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Nice location, perfect view but hot spring are not that kind of hot. Few of the staff are cold. Free shuttle bus to Otsu Station is convenient.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Shuttle bus from JR station. Nice onsen facilities. Nice lake views from hotel room.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Nice view. Good facilities. There is an entertainment center right next to the hotel where you or your family will surely enjoy. Cinema, electronic game center, bowling, karaoke and kids playground...
Cons: Buffet Breakfast is so so...
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The room was comfortable with nice lake view. Friendly staffs. Parking was free for hotel guests. Good location next to shopping malls.
Cons: A bit old buildings but still well maintained.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The restaurants inside the hotel were all excellent! Four different restaurants inside the hotel and one had four different styles of cuisines for a total of seven excellent resturants!
Cons: You must get reservations, all restaurants always crowded.
Biwako Ryokusuitei - Ōtsu - Pool
5
8.6 Excellent (2,119 reviews)
Overview Reviews

7.9 Good
Pros: The public baths and library were wonderful as was the public areas of the hotel. But the room we had was dated and not too clean. We reserved a room with a private onsen but when we went to use it at night there were flys everywhere near the tub. Front desk came up immediately but assured us we wouldn’t get bit. I sprayed water with the shower hose and they disappeared but when I got in the tub it was a little slimy. The public baths were much nicer and more relaxing. The pre set dinner was beautifully presented and a sashimi lover’s paradise. Aside from our room, we had a relaxing stay and worth the experience.
Cons: Our room was a little dated and not that clean . A tiny little bathroom but a great view of the sea
7.1 Good
Cons: I booked a non smoking room, but got setup with a smoking room and it smelled horrible.
7.1 Good
Pros: Service was amazing. It was quite too.
Cons: Wasn't too clean. The dinner got me upset - had to pay extra for beef
7.5 Good
Pros: Superb service and free shuttle offered
Cons: Checkout time is a little early at 10:00am
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Really kind staff.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Location - pick up from station , good food and great staff
Cons: Was difficult to access the walking path around the lake
9.2 Excellent
Pros: It's a bigger resort-style hotel (Jap: ryokan) built on Otsu hot-spring (Jap: onsen) that offers traditional getaway type of rest: soaking in hot spring baths, separate areas for men an women, both indoor and outdoor; abundant (optional) dinner and breakfast in Japanese style, local-style rooms (with tatami flooring, low table, etc) It's located on a picturesque lake shore in a smaller town, so outdoors one can find alternative dinne options if you're not too hungry to get a big hotel dinner. Note that they provide free shuttle servise to and from Ogoto-onsen train station, that makes it super-easy to access form Kyoto.
Cons: Note this is not a small family-run classic ryokan, but a bigger hotel with conference facilities for conventions, parties, weddings alike. Onsen etiquette may be tricky to those who are not used to it, feel free to ask questions, staff is super-friendly and helpful.

Facilities are very clean and well equipped/furnished.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Bicycle service is good.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Quiet., clean ,good kitchen and walking distance (10minutes) to restaurants and supermarkets. We cooked twice for ourselves Less than 30minutes to Kyoto central. Bikes available and Lake Biwa has 200km of graded, sealed paths. Rooms were spacious and the 2 aircons were great. We are away this time for4 months so tend to be on the budget side of average.
Cons: Been married for 38 years. Single futons were a bit different but were comfortable enough.

9.0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was super, a lot of choices and delicious. Besides delicious breakfast, the beautiful lake view from the 37F restaurant was super. Room was big and comfortable bed.
Cons: One thing may need improvement is the air conditioning, we stayed in the hotel in early November, the weather was Not cold but we can’t adjust the air conditioner to cold mode.
6.3 Good
Pros: The view is great in the afternoon. The bed was comfortable.
Cons: It's expensive for what it is. The view is really nice but the window fogged up so much in the morning and became really wet. All the restaurants in the hotel are expensive and only do courses/sets, there wasn't much flexibility. I expected more from the room, the pictures and description wasn't completely accurate but it was a comfortable, spacious, standard room.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Absolutely stunning view from the 33FF and upwards rooms, like being in a plane
Cons: Room was good value for money, breakfast etc euth 26.000 per person prohibitive
5.0 Okay
Pros: View was nice. Fireworks was a nice touch.
Cons: No 24 hour room service. Room was supposed to be renovated, but was clearly old. Buffet was ok, food was of a good quality but limited.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The view from the bedroom was amazing, the bedroom was very large for a Japanese hotel.
Cons: The pool was closed, breakfast wasn't great.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Nice size of room with great lake view. The facilities are good and the hotel can send the luggage to and from the reception office at Kyoto Station and the hotel itself in Otsu.
Cons: It's much valued for money if breakfast is included.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is just situated next to the Lake Biwa. You can have a fantastic view of the lake in both your room and the dining hall. The dinner and breakfast buffets are great with numerous food items to choose from. The staffs are friendly and helpful.
Cons: Nil
5.0 Okay

Pros: Awesome hotsprings, friendly staff
Cons: The beds were rock hard!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Great Ryokan that keeps up the image you have when you think japanese style inn. The baths in the other facility were great especially the outdoor ones.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Spacious room. Option to enjoy yomotokan onsen
Cons: Pillow is too hard and high
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The property is very clean and the dinner and breakfast were sumptuous! The onsen in the property is very small and is indoor and the room slightly small as well. However, you can and should definitely use the onsen in the sister property next door, Yumotokan for 600 yen per person per day. The onsen next door is lovely and overlook Biwa Lake. There is a shuttle to the property from the nearby subway station which you can call the property for when you arrive at the station. They will also send you to the subway station when you check out. Overall a very enjoyable stay.
Cons: Small indoor onsen
9.2 Excellent
Pros: We love the breakfast and dinner.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly staff. We bought the dinner + breakfast deal and it was wonderful. The onsen baths in the sister hotel are very nice (featuring 11th Floor rooftop bath overseeing Lake Biwa) - pay 600Y extra per person.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were very helpful as we only speak English and Spanish. They told us all about the amenities including the first-hour free for the private onsen. Loved it here!
Cons: Everything was amazing. Well done!

Cons: Bath

5.8 Okay
Pros: The Spa at the hotel was amazing
Cons: The facilities are very simple. The price is too high for the value
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We stayed for 2 weeks visiting family and had a good size room with seating area and a fridge. The room was very quiet with a huge comfortable bed - we slept very well! Staff were extremely polite, helpful and friendly ... and the huge buffet breakfast catered for all tastes. The bus to Ishiyama station was regular and a great bonus, although we also walked to Seta station.
7.9 Good
Pros: Although a bit dated the hotel has very large and clean rooms, a generous breakfast and extremely friendly staff.
Cons: There is not much around so you need to take the shuttle bus and get a train to Otsu. The hotel offers a free shuttle once every hour.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent location, and its a little europe right in the heart if Japan. The lake view is beautiful!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Classy hotel with dated decor. Very spacious room and excellent bathroom and layout. Very good choice of food for breakfast. The free Shuttle bus to Ishiyama Station was useful. Very good diner down the road called Joyful, next to Lawsons shop. Very good food and price.
Cons: We were down about 30 minutes before breakfast ended on the first morning and some of the food was only tepid. It should have been hotter. TV has no English speaking channels. Restaurants were pricey. Too far from Kyoto city centre but trains will get you there in 30 mins. Extra charges for gym, pool and spa, etc.

Cons: Coffee not provided in room or lobby. Staff refused to issue 2nd room card
7.7 Good
Pros: The proximity to the train station was very nice.

Overview Reviews
A stay at Guest House HANA – Hostel places you in the heart of Otsu, within a 15-minute drive of Kiyomizu Temple and Kawaramachi. Featured amenities include multilingual staff and laundry facilities.
7.1 Good
Pros: Location is good - fairly near the train station. Clean, friendly owner.
Cons: Would rather stay in Osaka for the price - beds are just ok, and unlike most Japanese dorms that are built with curtains for privacy, this one isn't.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The owner is very kind and smiling. We had a big room with kitchen and fridge for our group. There was a parking nearby, 600 yens all night.
7.9 Good
Pros: The location--walkable to both JR Otsu and Keihan Hamaotsu Stations, Lake Biwa, & convenience stores--was excellent. We even saw a bit of the Sanno-Sai festival down the block one evening! Multiple showers, sinks, toilets, bunk beds, & trash receptacles were very practical/helpful. Microwave, toaster oven, washing machine, and heater/cooler all worked fine.
Cons: The decor had more of a Chinese flair than wabi-sabi, and the WiFi was spotty at times, especially on newer devices.
6.3 Good
Pros: It was walking distance to to the subway stations. Very close to the waterfront.
Cons: We reserved a private room that was not private. We got a room that was sectioned off so the "walls" did not touch the ceiling. If there were other guests, you can hear their conversations from the common area.
2.9 Mediocre
Pros: No
Cons: Nothing
4.0 Okay
Pros: Not much
Cons: Run down place. Facility poor -kitchen not very clean and supplies were haphazard. Bed so hard I had to sleep ion a very small couch to get any sleep at all. I had to call the okusan in order to check-in. What if I hadnt had a phone??? II had to call her to come back latef since there were no English instructors for how to use the heat and it was freezing cold. The place was so musty that I felt unwell and gave up after 1 night. Id like a refund of the 2nd night!
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The hostel is quite small but is very clean and has everything you need including kettle, microwave , washing machine and tea/coffee facilities. Great access to both JR and Keihan train stations which made sight-seeing really easy. The owner was super helpful and happy to answer any questions and also responded to messages through booking.com in a timely manner. She also has a little cafe/pork bun shop in the nearby shopping mall which is super cute and worth asking her about so you can go and check it out!
7.5 Good
Pros: Owner was very nice and helpful. Great location, very close to tram station.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Nice little guesthouse. The owner is very helpful and will do everything she can to provide for all your requests. (She took the time to take me to a doctor for my bad knee)

9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly and helpfull staff. Great breakfast.
Cons: Nothing
5.0 Okay
Pros: The free pick up from the station.
Cons: Paid 6000 for a room advertised as a twin however only one tiny thin cheap futon more like a quilt and flat pillow. Didn't't sleep at all. There are only 2 share toilets & shower cubicles down a dangerous steep narrow staircase to service 5 rooms. The walls appear to be homemade, you hear everything in the room next door. The room entry also has a dangerous step. Toilets & shower downstairs as an extra inconvenience. I find it impossible to read the suspect reviews, this place could never rate a 10 or excellent. I would give it a minus score. Their advertisement obscures the fact the rooms have no proper beds or toilets. There is no need to stay near Biwako ski resort as the train is onlt 40 minutes to Kyoto and value for money.
6.7 Good
Pros: People ware very friendly and helpful, they pick us up and send to all places where we go
Cons: Honestly the futon was uncomfortable and so tiny, felt like I’m facing the floor. I’m short but it would be terrible for tall people. And the location was inconvenient, there was no convenient stores, no chemists, no cafes.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Staff and breakfast
Cons: Pillows

Pros: The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom facilities are excellent. I only booked the day before and had to take a smoking room as the only one available, but the smell was not as bad as I feared and they supplied an air freshener that you could spray on to the drapes etc too.
Cons: Don't bother with the breakfast, it's not worth it.

10.0 Excellent

Cons: You must get reservations, all restaurants always crowded.
