Setouchi Retreat Aonagi - Matsuyama - Building
1
9.4 Excellent (245 reviews)
$1,515+
Overview Reviews
Setouchi Retreat Aonagi is located in Matsuyama and about 35 minutes by car from Matsuyama Station. Free WiFi is available in each guest room. Guests may borrow conveniences such as humidifiers at no additional charge (please inquire at the front desk for details). Facilities include a sauna, a swimming pool, a tea lounge, a beauty salon and a store. Designed and constructed by Tadao Ando, this is all suite accommodation with 7 guest rooms.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Felt like we were the only ones staying there
Cons: That included in the facilities were extra hidden costs rather than just being able to use the facilities available. Worth it but very expensive!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Service was excellent, environment is great and perfect for a relaxing weekend. The room was very nice, spacious, clean, mini-fridge is for free, nice bluetooth speakers and even a manual coffee grinder! As it was during winter we also liked the underfloor heating in the room. Kaiseki dinner was worth it too.
Cons: We booked the indoor swimming pool or "cave" for 1h and it was nice to have this private space along with the jacuzzi but I think service could be improve here like adding some drinks or snacks on the bar would be a great idea!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very spacious and well equipped room (ipad, dyson hair dryer, beer and beverage prepared for free, bluetooth speaker and so on) Kind staffs who are willing to help the customer Nice dinner and sake Since there are few people around hotel you can relax and have a peaceful moment.
Cons: Would be great if the price of private pool is a bit cheaper.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: This is a very special place, especially for architects, designed as an exclusive house and art gallery by Tadao Ando. It’s perfect place for a relaxing few days off. The room is spacious with gorgeous view of the sea and hills; rather clean, bedroom with comfortable beds. Mini-fridge is for free. Sauna, indoor 20-m heated pool and jacuzzi you can book for private use. Nice spa service.
Cons: Outdoor pool and the fitted carpet in the room could be more clean. There is probably no place to eat outside of the hotel if they are fully booked in the restaurant. There is a garden but with no place to, for example, just sit and drink a coffee outside. No option to choose japanese or western style breakfast. Better to have a private car available than to use public transport/taxi.
7.9 Good
Pros: Location
Cons: more food choice
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The most stunning part is the view and how the architecture embrace the surrounding environment. It was very inspirational stay and definitely pampering. Staff are very helpful and polite, we had many special requests and all met. Complimentary Mikan juice and mineral water throughout the stay and champagne for happy hours for in house guests. The Kanseiki dinner is divine, worth every penny we paid at the spot, great treat!
Cons: Swimming pool and facility is subject to additional 10000yen per person charge. Bedroom is too simple and comparatively small.
7.9 Good
Pros: Environment, room decor. The swimming pool is marvelous
Cons: Food quality is average, compared to other top onsen hotel
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Friendly and professional staff Very delicious dinner Very beautiful and elegant hotel Everything is perfect! I had a very good time there.
7.9 Good
Pros: Fantastic team, great involvement, genuine hospitality, delicious food, nice talks with the sommelier, incredible spa treatment, wonderful moments
Cinnamon Guesthouse Dogo - Matsuyama - Bedroom
2
9.3 Excellent (538 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Cinnamon Guest House Dogo - Hostel in Matsuyama (Dogo Hot Spring), you'll be steps from Dogo Onsen and Yunoura Onsen. The front desk is staffed during limited hours.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: - Close from Dogo onsen - Very friendly and informative owner (+no issue with English) - Consideration for privacy: Each bed has two power outlets, safety locker (small tho), a curtain to block light - I liked that it turned off the light at 11pm automatically.
Cons: Not so much thing that I didn't like about - Lighting on the corridor can be improved. I think it was on all night (?) but it should be good if it only turns on when somebody comes out of the room.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The location is very good, near to Dogo Onsen, a few temples, places for footbath and near the main shopping area of Dogo Onsen. Beds are comfortable and the stairs to the upper bed of a bunk bed are very convienient. Nice atmosphere in the female dorm and in the lounge. Clean dorm and lounge, bath could be a little bit cleaner. Nice staff and free coffee and tea.
Cons: The kitchen is in the same place like the entrance and the reception. Two showers for everyone and they could be a little bit cleaner. No lockers for luggage, just a very smal locker for each bed to put the passport or smartphone inside (very smal).
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location was great - just around the corner from Dogo Onsen. The owner/manager Shimpei was super welcoming and friendly, and helped me organize my plans for my stay. The bed was very comfortable- one of the most comfortable hostel beds in Japan, I'd wager, and all facilities were spotless.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Facilities were good, beds comfortable, good location near the Dogo Onsen
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The staff speaks super well english very close to Dogo Onsen which is great very clean cabin-like beds
6.7 Good
Pros: Light is turned on at 7am but the curtains are good. The owner seems to be kind
Cons: Toilets are not on the same floor. The price is high and towels are extra. Check in is at 4pm and I couldn't leave my luggage before that time. Quite problematical. It's a bit noisy when people speak in the common room and it happened until quite late
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The staff is nice and close the hot spring.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything
Cons: No
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great place, great owner, great location
Cons: A lille dusty in the bathroom, but that is the only thing we can think
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Shimpei was an excellent host. The hostel was in a great location, a few minutes walk from the Dogo Onsen, with lots of tourist sites close by. It’s only a short walk to the tram which takes you into the centre in 15 mins. The hostel was super clean and comfortable. Security lockers in the rooms and charging ports etc. The area downstairs was really relaxing too, felt like you were at home. Free lovely biscuits too. Loved this place!!

Pros: Beautiful onsen hot spring bath on the ground floor.
Cons: Holiday price was extremely high without any dinner or breakfast: price we paid was higher than the ordinary price with full accommodation, dinner and breakfast altogether! I’ve got a certain skin allergy after taking bath at the wood bath in the room. Terrible experience. Never again...

Pros: The onsen was lovely and the gorgeous 300 year old trees (turtle and crane) were a lovely barrier between the city and the oasis of the hotel.
Cons: We made the mistake of not booking breakfast with the hotel room -- but that was our fault not theirs.

Pros: - service is good with quite good English communication. - onsen is awesome. - loc- facilities all good. ation is good, short walk to the center and dogo park with variety of shopping and dining options.
Cons: - it's just a bit overpriced. since there's so many dining options around, we didn't order halard and such roomrate is acceptable. halfboard cost yen10000/person is a bit too expensifbove.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Clean and comfortable hotel. Close to the cit, transport, attractions and shopping. The Ibsen/spa was a bonus
Cons: Check in is on the 13th floor. The instructions regarding this process were not clear when we entered on the ground floor. Also, having to use your key every time you get in the elevator was annoying. They key and wallet and other attachment is quite big and inconvenient for each person to have to take with them. You can’t just take one key per group in case one of you wants to return early, they can’t get to the floor

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Prime location There is a Noh performance at a theater at the restaurant itself which is free and scheduled to be started at 5:30pm (every evening?not sure) which I had missed as I didn’t have this information beforehand.
Cons: The quality of the in-hotel onsen water is very ordinary. It seemed not mineralised at all.

Pros: Traditional Japanese place to stay if you visiting Dogo, love the Kotatsu(traditional Japanese table heater with futon), staffs are very helpful and speak very good English, hot spring is cosy and recommend to pay extra to privatise it for a slot. 5 mins walk from Dogo Onsen. Kitchen is well equipped and love the new painting in living room. Breakfast is simple but nice.
Cons: The only thing is if you going in winter time like us, be prepared to sneak underneath the Kotatsu to sleep, the heater is not really warming up the room and it's sooooooo cold....
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The place is really nice to have a Japanese experience and the hostes were kind and they speak English really good. Everything was cleaned and nice.

Pros: The house is an old style house, and the interior has been renovated with good taste and preserving the original atmosphere. I loved it! The rooms were clean and pretty, and even in shared dormitory there was plenty of space for everyone. The location is perfect, you will have walk a bit uphill to get there, but Dougoya is really close to the Dogo Onsen main building, easy access. You can also rent a yukata to walk around the town with. I would definitely stay again!

Pros: The view from our room was spectacular!!!!
Cons: I noticed it in many hotels in Japan, but the wallpaper in some older hotels is very often dirty and has dark spots on the walls. Our room also had dirty wallpaper with black markings, everything else was good.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: This was chronologically my second booking at the hotel but one I actually made earlier than the other one and it was therefore less expensive so even greater value. Staff was great, we were able to use the same room (I originally booked a different one on this) and when the typhoon grounded us we were able to stay at the same room one more night. Pros: The location is excellent! The staff are amazing! So helpful and nothing is ever too much trouble for them, so polite and they made such an effort to understand us and helped us out several times during our stay.

Dogo Onsen Funaya - Matsuyama - Building
1
8.9 Excellent (1,345 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Dogo Onsen Funaya in Matsuyama (Dogo Hot Spring), you'll be steps from Isaniwa Shrine and 3 minutes by foot from Shiki Memorial Museum. Featured amenities include complimentary newspapers in the lobby, dry cleaning/laundry services, and a 24-hour front desk. Planning an event in Matsuyama? This ryokan has facilities measuring 538 square feet (50 square meters), including conference space. Limited parking is available onsite.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Rooms are very large: more a suite. Wonderful onsen: wooden stools and bowls, no plastic here. Wonderful indoor and outdoor pools. Very helpful pleasant staff. Footbath in garden is gorgeous. On main tram routes and next to the Dogo Onsen so easy to get around town. Luxurious, sparkling clean and comfortable.
Cons: I do not like having to say the night before when I shall want breakfast (or, come to that, what I shall want): makes me feel part of a tour rather than an independent traveller. A very minor niggle. I think they have a fair number of groups so perhaps set up to cater for them. Friend in Western-style room said it could do with sprucing up a bit and was not as shiny as our Japanese style room.
5.0 Okay
Pros: Staff very helpful
Cons: Old facilities
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It is a beautiful property with onsen and a garden. The emperor has stayed here on the past. The room was just lovely with a separate living area from the bedroom and a huge bathroom. Lots of amenities. It is very close to Dogo onsen. The staff were so kind and helpful in finding what we needed.
Cons: Can’t think of a thing!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Super clean and large rooms. Warm & welcoming staff. The onsen was really nice & clean. The garden is an oasis of tranquility. It was nice that we had a balcony and could open the windows. The location was right in Dogo Onsen and it was nice that one could walk around in the Yukata in the town and visit other onsen. The breakfast was really nice.
Cons: It was a bit expensive. One could expect that dinner would be included in the price.
7.5 Good
Pros: Good location
Cons: Proximity of noisy road
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Large size room, very quiet and comfortable, very attentive staff, contemporary design and facilities. Good location
Cons: Over priced
7.1 Good
Pros: Rooms are comfortable.
Cons: Dinner is not outstanding and service is average. Overall too expensive for what it is.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast were great. We tried both Japanese and Western breakfast for the 2 days that we stayed and it was delicious. The staff that brought us to our room don't speak English but she use her phone to translate and communicate with us. It was very thoughtful of her.

Pros: Excellent location, just opposite to the Dogo Onsen. The interior design is very nice, very European. Room size is not big but comfortable enough for one or two persons. Car parking service is also good. Thanks to the hotel team for making efforts to find my eye-glasses that was left in the hotel after checking out and send it back to me to Hong Kong
Cons: A cockroach was found in our room.
7.5 Good
Pros: location is great and room is big enough
Cons: minimum emenities , no English speakers , only tredtion breakfast , parking in auto robotic one cost a lot .
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Very good location.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Location, the Dogo Onsen was outside our door. You could walk to the other Dogo locations through the arcade that was 1 minute from the hotel.
Cons: Parking - our car was too tall and had to park off site.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location is number 1. Was very clean and roomy. Was not old and run down. The staff was friendly and well organized. Fresh yukatas and towels each day. Supplied bathroom necessities.

Pros: The owner was fun to talk with and we watched a variety TV show.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Amazing location, good price
7.1 Good
Pros: Close to the onsen street.
Cons: The kitchen sink by the living room was the only sink in the house which was a bit inconvenient.
6.7 Good
Pros: Very close to Dogo onsen
Cons: Insect come up from the drain pipe in bath room
5.8 Okay
Pros: Just the location is good. Near tram station, dogo park, and dogo Onsen.
Cons: I leave my luggage in the hostel after check out. After I coming back I just wanted to sit and wait for my bus for an hour, but they asked me to leave because I would use power. Never experienced something like this. Really poor service! I am really disappointed. Its to expensive for this!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing place with friendly host
6.3 Good
Pros: The staff is nice and communicative. Although the price is the same than for a hotel or a good hostel, you have to expect find a house. You can experience how is to live in a modest house in Japan here. That's interesting in my opinion, but not for everyone. It's walking distance from Dogo Onsen if you want to soak in the afternoon.
Cons: The house is old and the rooms small for so much people. Sometimes you'll have to wait to use unique shower/bathroom.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: It was very laid back. We stayed two nights so we could visit Matsuyama Castle before taking the ferry to Imabari ride the Shimanami Kaido.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The hostel is about a 2 min walk in an alleyway direct to Dogo Onsen station. You really can’t ask for a better location
Cons: The bathroom is old, as is the rest of the house. So if you’re fond of indulgent showers after a long day of traveling, go to one of the onsen nearby
5.8 Okay
Pros: Good location near dogo onsen and relatively cheap. Staff spoke pretty decent English and was overall pleasant.
Cons: The place is really small and cramped, you have to brush your teeth at the kitchen sink because there is no other option, kitchen facilities seemed dirty, and overall it has the feeling of being really run-down. Has the potential to be transformed into a cute place but needs a lot of work first.

5.0 Okay
Pros: Close to dogo hot spring.
Cons: We were only two, but they gave us a room that more 20 people could stay therefore it was too large to warm it. The toilet was very cold too. Regardless of paying for the parking for 2 days, they changed our parking to another place which was quite far from the hotel.
7.1 Good
Pros: It’s location was really good, being so near to Dogo Onsen. The Japanese style of the rooms were also really nice.
Cons: A little bit expensive for such a simple place with no proper kitchen.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Simple accommodations, large luggage locker, great location close to the onsens and shopping area. Dorm had a private toilet.
7.9 Good
Pros: Very close to the onsen, rooms were a good size.
Cons: Parking was quite difficult to find, rooms are a bit of a weird layout with the toilet separate from the sink.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Located in an extremely convenient area, near a lot of major sites such as Dogo Onsen and the shopping arcade where they had a festival happening. Close to these things, yet not too loud at night. Provided a locked cubby for my valuables.
Cons: I was satisfied, but be aware that it is minimalistic, not a fancy hotel. A lot of stairs, but totally fine.
7.1 Good
Pros: Hostel was fair, last minute booking so we didn't expect much. The location is wonderful, and the price was not too bad for this central and touristy area.
Cons: The building was old, and as a hostel didn't really have an atmosphere of community like I've seen elsewhere.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Right next to Dogo Onsen.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The location was very good. It was very easy to find! The rooms were very clean and spacious. The locker was huge to store your belongings in and each locker had a charging plug!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Plenty of showers, the beds were comfortable, and they gave one complimentary pack of detergent for the washing machines. I also like that they had dryers. They also had big lockers for you to put your luggage in.
Cons: There was only one outlet and it was located in your locker. A bit inconvenient to charge if you have many things like a phone, a battery pack and a camera. Hard to use your phone and charge at the same time. The rooms are made of traditional wood though so might be hard to put outlets in in other places. I brought my backpack so it was fine but there's no elevator. So if your handicapped or have big luggage it might be difficult.
5.8 Okay
Pros: Great location
Cons: Very small rooms, only a few showers for the entire hostel, not that clean, but run down.
