Setouchi Retreat Aonagi - Matsuyama - Building
1
9.4 Excellent (253 reviews)
$1,475+
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Felt like we were the only ones staying there
Cons: That included in the facilities were extra hidden costs rather than just being able to use the facilities available. Worth it but very expensive!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The dinner with sake pairing is amazing! Breakfast was stunning. The rooms and the views are really beautiful. The lounge offered complementary sparkling wine and local citrus juice.
Cons: Everything in addition to the room was charged extra - swimming pool, transfers, wine pairing. The outdoor pool is unfortunately only seasonal and we could not enjoy it. It would have been nicer if these services came as a courtesy.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very spacious and well equipped room (ipad, dyson hair dryer, beer and beverage prepared for free, bluetooth speaker and so on) Kind staffs who are willing to help the customer Nice dinner and sake Since there are few people around hotel you can relax and have a peaceful moment.
Cons: Would be great if the price of private pool is a bit cheaper.
7.9 Good
Pros: Location
Cons: more food choice
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Friendly and professional staff Very delicious dinner Very beautiful and elegant hotel Everything is perfect! I had a very good time there.

Overview Reviews

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location just around the corner from Dōgo onsen, super service and a clean and beautiful place to stay.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Shimpei-san is a great host, who speaks perfect English. He gives me helpful suggestions for Matsuyama. The best accomondation on my trip! Thank you!
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Cozy and relaxed atmosphere. Dorm and bunk beds were above average. Very easy access to center by tram. Dogo onsen is a good location to stay in Matsuyama even if you’re not interested in visiting onsens.
Cons: Guests make their own beds. Locker is very small and won’t fit any size laptop.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great, cosy, super clean guest house with a friendly and helpful manager (Shimpei). The dorms aren't overcrowded and have solid, well-made bunk beds with curtains for privacy, that include chargers and a lamp on each bed.
Cons: I thought the place was fantastic. Only (incredibly) minor improvement I can think of is adding hand towels in the 2F and 3F bathrooms.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Located seconds away from Dogo Onsen station and the historic onsen in a quiet neighborhood. Shimpei, the owner, built the whole place practically with his own hands. He recommended the local specialty dishes right away. Since every city in Japan is famous for a specific dish, this was really important to me. The bed was comfortable and everything I needed was provided including hairdryer and shampoo.
Cons: I know that inconsiderate guests are not the owner's fault, I just wished I could have enjoyed the bed a little longer than until 6 am.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Loved everything about it. Thank you! Mata rainen
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Perfect in every way! Thank you
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Nice and cosy interior setting, nostalgia of a warm English home style. The location was also superb with grocery mart, convinience store and transportation around it with less than 10 mins walking radius. The bed was comfortable and the privacy curtain felt nice and cosy.
Cons: Maybe there could be more signs to remind tenants on noise levels such as closing the doors or talking.

Pros: Beautiful onsen hot spring bath on the ground floor.
Cons: Holiday price was extremely high without any dinner or breakfast: price we paid was higher than the ordinary price with full accommodation, dinner and breakfast altogether! I’ve got a certain skin allergy after taking bath at the wood bath in the room. Terrible experience. Never again...

8.4 Excellent (422 reviews)

Featured amenities include luggage storage, microwave in a common area, and refrigerator in a common area. Self parking (subject to charges) is available onsite.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It is the last remaining wooden ryokan/hotel in Dogo onsen Matsuyama. Need to keep and use it. I do live and come again!
Cons: Good breakfast with local rise and soy-been miso. So not necessary to serve dry sea weed, as a common not local ones.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent location close to Dogo Onsen Honkan and local shōtengai. Staff were very friendly and helpful, especially Banto san who made some excellent recommendations on local food and drink. Facilities were excellent and clean. Would definitely stay here again when in Matsuyama and would highly recommend.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent location, but most important: traditional wooden building with traditional tatami room. I always try to find that when I travel in Japan, and it was difficult in Dogo. I didn't care about the special art though.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Traditional Japanese place to stay if you visiting Dogo, love the Kotatsu(traditional Japanese table heater with futon), staffs are very helpful and speak very good English, hot spring is cosy and recommend to pay extra to privatise it for a slot. 5 mins walk from Dogo Onsen. Kitchen is well equipped and love the new painting in living room. Breakfast is simple but nice.
Cons: The only thing is if you going in winter time like us, be prepared to sneak underneath the Kotatsu to sleep, the heater is not really warming up the room and it's sooooooo cold....
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Staying here was probably the highlight of the trip. The staff were absolute legends, the location was amazing, the facilities were exceptional and it was cheap. Honestly can't say how amazing staff were, left a lasting impression. The onsen was also tops. Matsuyama in general is filled with really nice Lovley people but these guys took it to the next level.
Cons: Everything was perfect
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very nice staff. Beautiful building compared to the big hotels in the area. 3min from Dogo onsen. Real coffee in the kitchen
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Loved my stay at Dougoya. The staff were very sweet and welcoming to all, and the building — both inside and outside — is almost like a trip back in time! Great atmosphere, and great setup. Even though it was a hostel-like setting, I didn’t feel sandwiched in dorm-style with the other travelers.
Cons: There are very few bathrooms (I think only 2) onsite at the property. This can make it very frustrating when you have to use the toilet, and they’re constantly occupied!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Staff here were delightful - welcoming, friendly and helpful. Our shared room was spacious and comfortable. The art and garden are darling.
Cons: The showers were kind of annoying - they last only 30 seconds with each hit of the button.

Cons: Nothing
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Awesome value, huge rooms! Great amenities provided and jacuzzi was beautiful and atmospheric. Despite being a love hotel, we didn't feel weird in any way. Recommended for multi night stays.

8.8 Excellent
Pros: This was our 3rd time here. As usual very good. We like the very big clean room. Firm Bed and massage chair. Covered parking for my motorcycle (and cars).
Cons: Nothing for you, if you want to enjoy Matsuyama center. Or you have to go by car or taxi. But that's a known issue with most love hotels.

On main tram routes and next to the Dogo Onsen so easy to get around town. Luxurious, sparkling clean and comfortable.

Pros: Good location near dogo onsen and relatively cheap. Staff spoke pretty decent English and was overall pleasant.
Cons: The place is really small and cramped, you have to brush your teeth at the kitchen sink because there is no other option, kitchen facilities seemed dirty, and overall it has the feeling of being really run-down. Has the potential to be transformed into a cute place but needs a lot of work first.

7.1 Good
Pros: Staff if very kind and helpful, location is exceptional (close to Dogo onsen and shopping stree). But the facilitiy and room is old with tiny toilet, Japanese style futon (no problem on that part).
7.5 Good
Pros: The location is great, almost right next to Dogo Onsen with plenty of shops and restaurants to walk around and shop. The staff was also friendly.
Cons: The hostel building itself is pretty dated. As such there is no AC in the hallways, which makes for a warm walk to the showers and up to your room. The bunk beds were also a bit uncomfortable as there was just a thin mattress on a wood frame
7.9 Good
Pros: Location
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The location was very good. It was very easy to find! The rooms were very clean and spacious. The locker was huge to store your belongings in and each locker had a charging plug!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Plenty of showers, the beds were comfortable, and they gave one complimentary pack of detergent for the washing machines. I also like that they had dryers. They also had big lockers for you to put your luggage in.
Cons: There was only one outlet and it was located in your locker. A bit inconvenient to charge if you have many things like a phone, a battery pack and a camera. Hard to use your phone and charge at the same time. The rooms are made of traditional wood though so might be hard to put outlets in in other places. I brought my backpack so it was fine but there's no elevator. So if your handicapped or have big luggage it might be difficult.
5.8 Okay
Pros: Great location
Cons: Very small rooms, only a few showers for the entire hostel, not that clean, but run down.
