The mountain view, bathing while watching birds, remoteness (the mountain pass is closed to normal traffic in winter)
Our room was very small (even for an economy?), but we still had a lovely mountain view.
It was such a big comfort to knew that there will be a free shuttle bus from and to the Ryokan. The hospitality was nice and the Ryokan itself and its location was very relaxing and memorable.
The outside public onsen is great and the view of hotel is awesome!
The indoor private onsen is not very clean and the staff did not mention about the outside private onsen !
Everything was great! We had made reservations for the 2.45pm shuttle bus and the ride up was comfortable and gave us great views of the mountains. Check in was efficient despite the high number of guests. They had allocated lounge seats at the lobby for our group of 5, with welcome drinks and snacks for us to nibble on while they checked us in. The bathing and onsen facilities were very clean and it was wonderful to have a soak in the outdoor onsen with the crisp autumn air. Dinner was very tasty, and breakfast was just as delicious. They also offer shuttle buses to Kamikochi and also back to Matsumoto - very convenient! For those who are concerned about wifi, it's mainly available at the lobby level and not so much in the rooms, but this is a minor issue when you're immersed in the breathtaking natural landscape of the Northern Japan Alps.
Slightly expensive but the entire experience is worth every yen.
Great location to explore nearby region. The staff are fantastic, and will do anything to help. English a little limited so if this frustrates you not the place for you. The food was some of the best we had during our 2 week trip - and for two people who aren't too keen on fish it was perfect!
Very regimented time restraints for meals/bus leaving times etc. I can see why they do it but definitely not for everyone. Check out at 10am but shuttle only leaves at 12midday with little to do around there, not ideal. Overall the place is VERY tired and dirty - with a revamp though it could be perfect place to stay. Also, the futon mattress...SO uncomfortable!! Two worst nights sleep (no sleep) the whole trip, but easily rectified. Also very cold rooms, onset perfect to warm you up, but with a revamp and improved heating systems again, could be perfect due to staff, surroundings and food!!
Nakanoyu Onsen Ryokan refined Japanese hot spring inn located an hour by bus from Shinshimashima Station. Situated in the middle of three prominent mountains (Mt. Kasumizawa, Mt. Yake, and Mt. Abo), the quiet inn boasts an excellent view in all of its guest rooms. The inn is famous for its hot spring baths and excellent Japanese dishes, especially its duck-meat hot pot. An excellent choice for for hiking in Kamikouchi and climbing Yakedake.
