9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very relaxing, nice Onsen that is easy to book privately, delicious Japanese food, spacious room. Hotel personnel will pick you up from the bus station (station name is Sawando, which google calls something else incorrectly). You will get a private dining room, and four out of eight total rooms come with a hot bath inside. Keep in mind that even though you have the hot bath, you won't have a shower in the room. You cannot use the hot bath to clean yourself. The only showers are the public ones, and one private that can be reserved. I initially found that to be inconvenient, but it really was not. Relaxation is about letting go of control! The bed is a Japanese futon, on the floor, but comfortable and warm even in the winter. They will put some kind of a hot-water filled feet warmer under the sheets, too.
Cons: Some amount of sake should have been included in the price of the dinner!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic traditional Japanese hospitality and beautiful food in an unusual location. Not for a second did they make us feel different or unwelcome due to our western/foreign background. We were here for 2 nights and was a highlight of our visit to Japan. A special thanks to Yuta Saitou for his patient help and support before and during our stay.
Cons: Very little not to like in this beautiful
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The room is beautiful and comfortable. The staff is very helpful. I love to stay here.
Cons: Nothing
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The ryokan is 5mins walk from Sawando bus stop, not big but super comfortable. I do like the hot spring and their lovely staffs. It’s a pity that I arrived one week before Kamikochi opened to public this spring. BTW, the starry sky view from the garden was really amazing.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: We stayed here for just one night. It's our accommodation on the way we travelling from Shirakawago to Fujikawaguchiko. Hence, it's a wonderful stay with a lovely and relaxing environment. It's the ryokan that surouding by snowy mountains and provided supreme retreat. Staffs are very friendly and helpful even they don't speak English. Breakfast and dinner are fantastic. The portions were just right, not too much not too less.
Cons: We didn't expect there is no shower area in the room. Our room include the outdoor onsen, it's nice but the weather was too cold for bathing outside :-) However the private onsen that the ryokan provided was wonderful, we just need to book the time.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Excellent service. Very comfortable
Cons: The location close to a big road and parking lot was unappealing but easy to forget in the calm of the interior surroundings
7.1 Good
Pros: In general the hotel is average; location is good for catching the bus at Sawando Bus Terminal for going to Kamikochi, it is less than 5 min walk.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A staff member picked us up and dropped us off at the bus stop which was so nice!

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything - the staff. The ambience. The bed. The kitchen. The whole place was warm and exactly what I needed as a solo traveller. The owners were wonderful and up for a good chat :)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Clean, comfortable, cosy and great value for money. We stayed in one of the private Japanese-style rooms which was quiet, comfortable and immaculately clean. There was every facility and amenity we could need with many thoughtful details. The atmosphere in the whole building was friendly and warm. Staff were welcoming and helpful. Great location for transport and for seeing the many beautiful sights of Matsumoto. Excellent recommendations from the hosts for restaurants, cafés etc. Wish we could have stayed longer!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Really kind people working there, I had a lovely time! The bed was comfortable and the shower convenient as near the dorm. The common space is also big and spacious.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Tabi Shiro is hands down the best accommodation I have found in my travels. I only intended to pass through Matsumoto but after finding tabi shiro three days ago I am still here! Tabi-shiro is incredible. A wonderful young family owns Tabi shiro and restored and renovated an old style Japanese home into this incredible lodging and lounge. Every detail has been thought through and the place is welcoming, comfortable, impeccably clean, has a great bar, delicious and cheap breakfast, the most comfortable beds I've found in Japan, fast wifi, great common space, laundry, nice bathroom facilities (with lavender scented body products!!). Unlike so many other hotels/hostels Tabi Shiro is clean, comfortable, has a perfect location AND has so much unique character while still being affordable. In my experience if you are looking for lower budget affordable lodging you don't expect to find places that are clean, cheap AND have character (usually you get one out of three or at best two). Bikes are also available to rent and you get a free drink at the bar when you check in! Tabi shiro also has a custom map of the city that they made for guests to use. As I have explored Matsumoto for the past few days I have only gone to stores, attractions and restaurants that Tabi shiro recommended and they've all been wonderful. The people at Tabi shiro make it the most special, they are so welcoming, kind and friendly. The family that owns it is lovely and everyone they employ is as well, I made friends immediately and simply don't want to leave. If you do anything at all in Japan stay at Tabi shiro, it's been the absolute highlight of my three week trip!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: You get a free drink when you arrive and the accomodation is very close to Matsumoto castle and public transport so is great for sight seeing :)
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The guesthouse offers an authentic japanese stay. The common rooms like the bar, living room and kitchen are very comfy. You really feel like home. The staff is super friendly and gets in contact with their guests. You even get a welcome drink at arrival. Soaps, shampoos, hair dryer and slipper are available for free.
Cons: It is a really basic japanese ryokan. You nearly sleep on the ground which isn’t that comfortable. Only public bathrooms.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: I was used to hostels in other countries (Europe, India, South America). This was my first experience in Japan which blew me away quality wise. Very well equipped. Dorm beds had (USB charging) sockets, shelfs, lamp, hangers and curtains. Hostel bar supported getting to know other travellers. Beautiful design, good mix of modern and traditional style. Helpful staff also.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The place is beautifull, rooms, bathroom, living room, kitchen...
Cons: Every thing was ok.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Super cute place with very friendly staff, very comfortable stay, you can even hang your laundry outside if needed
Cons: Just a bit far from the main station, about 15-20 minutes?
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Spacious dorm & kitchen. Very helpful staff - keep practicing your English please! :)
Cons: No air-conditioning in the bathrooms and on hot days they were hot.
Nakanoyu Onsen Ryokan - Matsumoto - Building
4
9.0 Excellent (105 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Nakanoyu Onsen Ryokan in Matsumoto, you'll be within a 10-minute drive of Kappa Bridge and Mount Yake. This ryokan is 1.7 mi (2.7 km) from Taisho Pond and 2.4 mi (3.8 km) from Hirayu Onsen.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Extraordinary views. World class service. Easily accessible to Kamikochi, Matsumoto, and Takeyama. Breakfast and dinners are so exquisite. The onsen facilities are well kept and super relaxing after a long day. I am looking forward to coming back here again, the experience was unlike any other mountain retreat I've ever had.
Cons: It would help to read up a little bit on ryokan and onsen etiquette, or else you will be gravely confused.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Great experience, awesome place to stay if you want to stay in a authentic ryokan. They if you get in contact they will pick you up from Matsumoto train station and take you to the property and then next day drop you off at kamakochi. If your a fussy eater you will not like it here / go hungry as there’s no western food and even no option what you want to eat. I found the traditional meals good but had to try it once. The onsen was also one of the best. Great experience
Cons: Nothing
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Excellent Breakfast and dinner. Hotel staff make our stay very comfortable. Onsen was great and relaxing. Appropriate free shuttle to Kamikochi.
Cons: Not outside private onsen. Not easy to arrive there if you don’t have car.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly staff, did their best to speak English. Private onsen, so you can join with your partner. Very Nice diner. Close to Kamikochi. Provided shuttle bus from Matsumoto station and to Kamikochi.
Cons: Mattress was to thin for me Japanse breakfast not my cup of tea Not cheap, but compared to other Ryokans in neighborhoud reasonably priced
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We really loved our stay here and wished we could have stayed longer. We drove a hire car which was fine so no issues getting there. Staff were really friendly and helpful and spoke English when needed. Dinner was excellent (traditional Japanese) and breaky good as well. The view was fantastic from the room and the lobby / restaurant. Would highly recommend staying. Very peaceful. The baths were nice as well - one outdoor and two indoor.
Cons: WiFi only in lobby not rooms.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Not enough words to describe this magnificent ryokan in the middle of nature. This has been my best stay so far- it exceeded all expectations . The service is at its highest - it is a lifetime experience. The all place will leave you speechless. It’s worth every cents. One night was not enough for sure. I suggest 2 nights if you want to explore the area to enjoy - recommended to nature lover. You won’t be disappointed
Cons: There is absolutely nothing I didn’t like - the staff did their best to meet my needs.
7.9 Good
Pros: Very friendly staff, free tea in the room all the time, free transfer to Kamikochi and Matsumoto. Onsen is very nice, especially the male one, where you get a direct view on the mountains. Plenty of food for Breakfast and Dinner, changing daily.
Cons: The pillows were insanely hard - to an extent that they were uncomfortable. Private Onsen needs an overhaul - it's way overdue. Located in the middle of nowhere, there are no other options to escape but with car. Fish, tofu and misosoup may not be your first choice for breakfast, when you are used to european (continental) breakfast. Although very good, it might not be for everybody's palate.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Friendly and helpful people. They speak English really well and explain everything to you. The food was fresh and really great, but eating fish at 7 in the morning might not be for everyone. A shuttle gets you to the next bus stop and pics you up. Great place and Kamikochi is cool too.
Cons: The building seems a bit old and the room is small. Price is a bit high, even with the great food. The orange juice for breakfast is horrible.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The location was good.
Cons: The Onsen was not clean, as well we the private bath.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The staff offered five star service through our stay. They helped us plan each day, the rooms were cleaned as soon as we left for breakfast and the waits for the shuttle bus were very short. The area is stunning but the staff really made our trip.
Cons: Although we enjoyed it, the private onsen could do with a refresh. However, the outdoor baths in the public onsen more than made up for it.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Just a positive experience. The staff is a family who owns the location, and they are very welcoming and kind. They were very hospitable, and me and my traveling companion want to return soon and stay in this area again, because of how kind the staff was, how interesting and comfortable the location and surrounding wilderness were, and how we were able to get to many interesting places without too much of a difficult drive. Ice cream was also terrific. There is also an area where guests can talk and play music. It was very nice. Furthermore, breakfast was delicious, I would recommend you get it in addition to your stay.
Cons: At night, the drive can be a little scary and disorienting. So be sure to have your path picked out.

Pros: It was such a cozy, peaceful and warming place with loving hosts. The shared bathrooms were incredibly clean and spotless, So were the toilets! We instantly required takeaway breakfast bentos because we needed to leave the place early, Mrs. loving&caring Sueko prepared us delicious bentos with her original homemade cookies. Also, Mrs.Sueko’s dinner was one of our best meals in Japan. We definitely recommend this place to everyone we know. If there is opportunity, we will visit again.

Pros: The location is great. The hotel has wonderful facilities and the staff were fantastic. Budget accommodation at its best
Cons: I liked everything
9.2 Excellent
Pros: This was a surprisingly great stay. Very new feeling, clean and had everything we needed. Loved the slipper/shoe lockers. The rooms were great, and it felt airy with the window views. Great location for buses and trains.
Cons: I was surprised to see that this recently refurbished hotel only seemed to have onsen for men? The map given to us at check-in certainly said men-only and I couldn't find the womens. If there was one then they should make it clearer - it felt a little sexist and out of keeping with the modern feel.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Free bike rental. Clean and well organized. Bath area
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The room was sparkling clean, everything in order, the staff was very kind. I can only recommend. :) Matsumoto castle is about 10 minutes walk, and the train station is also about the same distance.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: -Close to Matsumoto train station (less than 5 min. walk) -Free bicycle rental service (3hrs/day) The town is not big. You can ride the bike to the main attractions ex. Matsumoto castle and Matsumoto art museum etc. -There are minimarts nearby -Bathroom amenities are super ! They basically provide everything you need. -There have a snack vending machine in the hotel. -The capsule is spacious.
Cons: -The onsen is only available for men

Cons: More expensive than any other capsule hotel or hostel I've seen in Japan

Cons: Nothing much to dislike.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The double room was really nice! Very comfortable and perfect for a one or two night stay, for sure. The bathroom was also well-stocked with a lot of amenities. I liked that they had guests remove their shoes upon entering. It makes the place seem much cleaner compared to otherwise.

Pros: High quality and good location The staff were welcoming and the highest level of professionalism I have experienced. A fantastic experience.
Cons: It was excellent
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel staff were so lovely and welcoming. We were greeted with tea and cake on arrival. We had a great check in experience, they explained everything very well and spoke good English. Our room was set up with a couple of tatami seats first and they made our beds during dinner. The private onsen was amazing (you can book it on arrival, it’s free to use for 40 minutes and it’s 500 yen for extra 30 minutes) - the view of Matsumoto downtown at night was stunning. Our traditional Japanese dinner and breakfast were such an amazing experience - we were sat in a private dining area and the dinner had three courses with around 15 different little dishes on the table! We will definitely stay here again if we are ever back in Matsumoto. In terms of location, it was easy to get to/from the hotel from/to Matsumoto train station - a direct bus was around 300 yen and taxi was around 2,200 yen.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: A great family run hotel. All the staff were so helpful, nothing was ever too much trouble
Cons: If I were to be picky, I would have like slightly thicker futon
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Use of private onsen for free was a highlight. Otherwise, a clean and comfortable option with great food and evening entertainment.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Elaborate Japanese breakfast... Private hot tub rooms... My limited Japanese language skills were not an issue, but much staff spoke little English
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The traditional decor. The 3 outdoor baths for couples and families. The indoor baths. The restaurant. Quality of the dinner and the free after dinner concert. The free shuttle into town at ten in the morning.... The good English of the staff and their friendliness. The convenience store right outside.....
Cons: You have to take a taxi everywhere.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Friendly staff and cosy environment. Nice & sumptuous dinner & breakfast. There is an evening free cultural performance at the hotel. Onsen was great too!
Cons: Located in an Onsen area, so be prepared for little or no evening activities. But there's a convenient store just around the corner. Need transport to city or tourist attractions. The trade-off for a nice quiet night.
7.9 Good
Pros: The food provided was excellent both breakfast and dinner. The western bed and futons were hard but after asking for three futon beds it was quite comfortable. The staff were very polite and helpful and the hot spring spa was relaxing.
Cons: Hard beds and pillows
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Lovely people. Very calm and traditional
8.3 Excellent
Cons: Unfortunately, the room next to each mine quarreled loudly. The wall wasn’t soundproof.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The private Onsen are amazing and free of charge. The dinner consisted of several courses with many attention to details. Everything we had was excellent, especially the home made Soba noodles are great (best ones we had in Japan)! The japanese style rooms are quite spacious and very clean. Although the hotel is a bit older, everything is in a very good condition.
Cons: The WiFi connection is bad. Especially in the room.

8.3 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is nice with friendly staff. It is convenient to get to the town by bus.
Cons: Would be nicer if we could have choices for meals instead of being a set menu.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Everything. From the staff welcoming us to the Ryokan through to the room, the food (!!!), the onsen and finally one of the staff running after us to hand us an umbrella as we checked out and left Matsumoto.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Friendly staff, very good food, nice room, very nice small gardens with fish. You can taste local wines by glass (to pay additionally). Private hot tub can be rented and it is quite good - with huge inside and small outside tub. Though outside one is too shallow.
Cons: There was an old smell of smoke in the room. There is no hot tub in every room like in some other ryokans for the same price. Location is not great.
5.0 Okay
Pros: Breakfast nice and varied, though very strict in the (no)choice of time.
Cons: No shower in the room in a 4-star ryokan! They told us rooms with shower only assigned to occupancy by more than two people. Quite discriminatory/unacceptable.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We have higly appreciated he kindness of the staff. The check-in and the check-out procedures were well organised The rooms and the dinner were really nice. We love the Onsen, free tea, coffee and sweet cakes. We were served as Queen and King. This ryokan is highly recommended.

Pros: Amazing Japanese style room — actually several rooms — with our own private, outdoor onsen bath. From the highly professional staff and personalised check-in to the stylish fine dining evening meal, the experience was amazing. Everything was very well organised and slick, down to our room being set up for sleep (!) while we were eating dinner. The bus service that got us there was easy to find and comfortable. Even the corridors smelt amazing. This feels like a truly Japanese experience.
Cons: The bathroom itself — not the onsen — could do with an update and a better shower. It slightly took the sheen off an otherwise gorgeous room. Our air conditioning also didn't appear to work, or at least we couldn't figure it out and there were no instructions.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful Onsen in the mountains
Cons: Nothing
9.6 Excellent
Pros: We loved our stay. We stayed for four nights, and we were worried that was going to be too long, especially when a typhoon hit which meant we couldn’t go outside for our whole stay. However, a combination of the amazing meals, our private onsen and relaxation area, massages and other perks meant we didn’t get bored at all. In fact, we loved it. It’s pricey, but worth it for the quality you’re getting.
Cons: More hooks and hangers in the room!
7.9 Good
Cons: They didnt have kids menu for dinner, everything charged the same as adults, eventhough kids couldnt take it.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Absolutely loved our stay and only wish we had stayed longer! Staff were so lovely and welcoming, from our pick up at the station through to our check in on arrival. This was by far one of our most memorable places for our entire 2.5 week trip though Japan. As this was our first stay at a Ryokan and experiencing an onsen it did not disappoint and exceeded our expectations. The included kaiseki dinner was well worth it and they even personalised our dessert to wish us a happy anniversary. Wonderful attention to detail and Japanese hospitality at it's finest!
Cons: Very minor, toilet/bathroom smelled a little. However this may be due to the location of the accommodation?
6.3 Good
Pros: Food was great, the atmosphere look more like a high class French restaurant.
Cons: We reached there around 6:30pm, it was a bit late due to traffic, it was not easy to find, it located on top of a mountain. The room that they gave, not same as the room I reserved on booking.com, we complained and has to pay extra 4000Yen to upgrade.......it wasted us almost an hour handling this! Onsen in the room not up to standard, and I feel it may be not real hot spring, Because of the temperature and lack of certificate.
9.6 Excellent
Cons: Japanese dinner took way too long. Became an enjoyable.

Cleaning staff friendly and obliging. Buffet dinner on 2 nights had a mix of Japanese and Western food. French dinner was very good. Location of hotel right opposite Kappabashi bridge and river and a few minutes walk from bus station.

5.0 Okay
Pros: Location is good, easy find.
Cons: Too commercial. Definitely overpriced. Basically no service at all. Staff just introduced every necessary information, and watched me to carry my heavy luggage myself. Facility was just like a budget hotel, while price is close to a 5 star. Service was even worse than a budget hotel. Breakfast and dinner was buffet style, very limited choices.

Pros: My dad stays here for 3 nights and the staff are really nice and helpful. They can speak in English and it helps my dad a lot during his stay here. My dad get to explore Matsumoto with free rental bicycle and he really enjoys it. I'm really happy that my dad enjoyed his stay here.
Cons: When we booked this place, my dad stays alone in this guesthouse for a 2 nights and it is a little scary at night as mixed bed dormitory is at the back of the house. The ceiling is pretty low and my dad knock his head a few times ^^;
7.5 Good
Pros: Great meal downstairs
Cons: Earlier check in
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I only stayed here for a night and luckily I booked this accommodation as I didn't receive any futon in my room at International House. When I was here, me and my dad is the only people in this place and it is really cool place as it was a miso factory previously. This guesthouse is the closest and cheapest accommodation to Shinshu University, I recommended this guesthouse for people who their family coming to visiting. The staff are friendly and helpful as well.
Cons: There's only one bathroom and it might be a little crowded if there's a lot of people in the guesthouse.
6.7 Good
Pros: The guesthouse has a vintage feel, there is free coffee and tea as well. The staff were friendly and the bedsheets were nicely folded. There are two areas you can sit and relax in. They have many matsumoto brochures and information availiable.
Cons: The outside door is locked at night, the keypad is a little difficult to use so i struggled with it for a few minutes. Keep in mind if you go out late that the floorboards do creak and thr lighting is a little dim. So set up your bed and things before you go out!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: very nice staff very interesting house nice common area kitchen with free snacks and tea was available

Pros: Short and nice stay, very helpful staff.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very homey! Felt like I was staying in a small house or Air BnB but for the price of a hostel! Nice short 5min walk from Matsumoto Castle which is really nice for viewing at night or early in the morning before other people get there. The staff was very friendly and their English is excellent. They were very thorough with their recommendations and sat down for like 15-20min to help me decide where to go hiking.
Cons: A little far from the train station (20min walk) but accessible by bus and was a lovely walk in my opinion just maybe far for those with accessibility difficulties

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The Staff were very friendly and approachable. They greeted us well and were very hospitable especially as they knew it was our honeymoon. The hotel was clean and spacious. It is is located in a quiet and quaint street within easy walking distance of the Black Crow Castle. It is also only a short walk from Nakamachi Street.
Cons: It's a quite a quiet area in the evenings and a lot of the nearby restaurants are closed in the evening. The more livelier part of town in the evening is about 25 mins walk or 10 mins in taxi. However, we did manage to find places to eat nearby so there are places around. The room layout was a little odd but it was spacious and clean so can't really complain.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly staff, helpful. The breakfast buffet was pretty good.
Cons: The price was high.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The staff was super friendly and lobby very inviting. The women’s Onsen was delightful. The breakfast was mostly Japanese with a few western options but very delicious.
Cons: The bathroom was a bit dated and showed mold in the tile grout. It could have been cleaner. The bed was about the same as any other hotel in Japan- not horrible but not Western standards for cushion.
