9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very relaxing, nice Onsen that is easy to book privately, delicious Japanese food, spacious room. Hotel personnel will pick you up from the bus station (station name is Sawando, which google calls something else incorrectly). You will get a private dining room, and four out of eight total rooms come with a hot bath inside. Keep in mind that even though you have the hot bath, you won't have a shower in the room. You cannot use the hot bath to clean yourself. The only showers are the public ones, and one private that can be reserved. I initially found that to be inconvenient, but it really was not. Relaxation is about letting go of control! The bed is a Japanese futon, on the floor, but comfortable and warm even in the winter. They will put some kind of a hot-water filled feet warmer under the sheets, too.
Cons: Some amount of sake should have been included in the price of the dinner!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic traditional Japanese hospitality and beautiful food in an unusual location. Not for a second did they make us feel different or unwelcome due to our western/foreign background. We were here for 2 nights and was a highlight of our visit to Japan. A special thanks to Yuta Saitou for his patient help and support before and during our stay.
Cons: Very little not to like in this beautiful
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The room is beautiful and comfortable. The staff is very helpful. I love to stay here.
Cons: Nothing
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The ryokan is 5mins walk from Sawando bus stop, not big but super comfortable. I do like the hot spring and their lovely staffs. It’s a pity that I arrived one week before Kamikochi opened to public this spring. BTW, the starry sky view from the garden was really amazing.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: We stayed here for just one night. It's our accommodation on the way we travelling from Shirakawago to Fujikawaguchiko. Hence, it's a wonderful stay with a lovely and relaxing environment. It's the ryokan that surouding by snowy mountains and provided supreme retreat. Staffs are very friendly and helpful even they don't speak English. Breakfast and dinner are fantastic. The portions were just right, not too much not too less.
Cons: We didn't expect there is no shower area in the room. Our room include the outdoor onsen, it's nice but the weather was too cold for bathing outside :-) However the private onsen that the ryokan provided was wonderful, we just need to book the time.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Silence, calm atmosphere, lovely people, fantastic location , georgeus food and private onsen in room. Thank you for making my stay so special. Food was spectacular everything was in autumn theme. I have been travelling through Japan for three weeks and I missed milk so much, and here you are providing me with a bottle of delicious and fresh milk at 7:00 am...thank you very very much.
7.1 Good
Pros: In general the hotel is average; location is good for catching the bus at Sawando Bus Terminal for going to Kamikochi, it is less than 5 min walk.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Everything was wonderful. The decor is absolutely charming, and the place is quite new and very clean. Our room was huge with lots of amenities, and we slept very well on the futon. Both the outdoor and indoor baths were absolutely lovely after a day in Kamikochi, and we really enjoyed the yukatas and samue nightwear provided. The kaiseki meal and breakfast served in a private room was fantastic, and the service made us feel very special. We had an extremely comfortable, relaxing and luxurious stay.
Cons: The location is very convenient for Kamikochi, but the place is quite close to the road and next to a parking lot. It didn't really bother us, though! The ryokan is also slightly expensive but worth every yen.

Pros: Very charming house
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The guest houses in Japan are really good so there's a lot to live up to but this place is one of the best I've stayed in on my trip. Its like being at home except with indoor archery!
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Good location.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Well run hostel, lots of nice free perks (oatmeal and protein powder , etc). Great location near castle, town is small enough so a walk anywhere (station, major sights ) is under 30 minutes). Lots of thought and care have been put into making the small details all work well for guests, excellent maps and guides to the area for transport and sightseeing all available. We stayed in a private room, futons were unusually comfortable and room was of a good size and well organized. Impressive fast response to emails from the hosts.
Cons: Wish we had been able to be there the first night of our trip (it was full) as it would have helped to have their wide sources of information on our first full day there. Wish we could have stayed longer- our fault, not the hostel !
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very nice atmosphere. Next to Matsumoto castle (nice at night) and close to station. Helpful people. Free bikes. Family room was perfect.

9.2 Excellent
Pros: Staff so friendly. Place really close to Matsumoto castle.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was very affordable, and it was great to be able to hang out with the hosts and the other guests while I was there. The beds were very comfortable and the other guests made an effort to minimise noise etc. Everything was very clean and sanitary. The hostel had a very cosy feel. The hosts also spoke in slowly in Japanese so I could understand. The other guests were super friendly. We were only a 10 minute walk from the train and bus stations for our day trip.
Cons: Perhaps there could have been a few more options for the breakfast, like eggs or something filling.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Really great vibe! Staff are friendly, bunk beds are spacious, communal area is lovely, and a free drink on arrival! Large female only bathroom which was always spotless.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Really nice spot. Lovely little communal area and reception. The room was traditional Japanese and nice and comfortable. Staff were also very generous with their time and recommendations. Would highly recommend.
Cons: Parking fee was a bit of a surprise. And men's showers (or "shared" bathroom) is downstairs whilst women only is on 2nd floor.

Cons: 1 km from the train station

9.2 Excellent
Pros: The owner is very kind, helpful, and generous especially the "mother". She prepared a very delicious vegetarian dinner for me. She offered to give me umbrella upon check out since I did not have one and the weather forecast was raining for whole day. I also like the spacious shared shower room with big spring water hot tub. It has a view of the forest if you open up the large window. The room is also nice and cozy with greenery view. I like the onsen discount voucher very much too. The little birds at the garden were so cheerful and joyful. The husband and son are also nice people. The "son" is helpful in providing sightseeing information and the "father" is clear in his explanation of the house rules.
Cons: It's perfect. It would be nice if it has in house onsen though.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very kind hosts, warm atmosphere and very helpful with everything, especially finding the perfect excursions within the region - it was wonderful, if we can we will come back!

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Sueko’s food was absolutely incredible and we highly recommend that anyone who stays here has breakfast and dinner in the property. Both hosts were absolutely first class and the property is in a beautiful place with lots of fantastic scenery and wonderful hiking. We cannot say enough good things about this place!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Hosts were great, food was awesome.
Cons: The single beds were not comfortable for people over 80kg.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We felt right at home and the food was great. We rented a car and explored many local hikes. We appreciate the great care they have us. Really happy with our stay:) We we’re worried our kids (4&6) might be too much for the inn but they were very welcoming and it was so comfortable.

Pros: We have higly appreciated he kindness of the staff. The check-in and the check-out procedures were well organised The rooms and the dinner were really nice. We love the Onsen, free tea, coffee and sweet cakes. We were served as Queen and King. This ryokan is highly recommended.

Cons: Would be nicer if we could have choices for meals instead of being a set menu.

Pros: Fantastic staff and fantastic food
Cons: Everything was just perfect
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was such a lovely little inn. The staff are incredibly attentive, the meals are creative and beautiful, and the entire place is immaculately clean. I'd recommend it to anyone coming to Matsumoto.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: This beautiful traditional ryokan had superb kaiseki dinners and breakfasts each day. Rooms were immaculate with extra little touches like a complimentary supper treat left for us each evening. Staff were courteous and spoke enough English to assist us. Onsen was beautiful. Interiors of the rooms and public areas beautifully designed in traditional timbers. We were treated with utmost courtesy and loved our 4-night stay here. Highly recommend this ryokan to anyone who perhaps has never experienced this type of Japanese hospitality. And the food was the next level of master chef!
Cons: So hard to find anything to fault here. Location is a little bit out of central Matsumoto, but that makes this place such a retreat... a nearby local bus took us directly to Matsumoto Castle and Station, and a 10 minute taxi ride brought us back. We loved everything about this ryokan!

9.0 Excellent
Pros: It is right beside Mt Yake Dake, an active volcano which you can climb directly from the hotel, or i recommend to get a free lift to Kamikochi and walk back from there about 7 hours up and down. The staff will give you maps which are pretty good. The views are spectacular. This was the best thing we did in Japan.
Cons: No showers in your room, you shower in the onsen which is handy in one way because you go to the onsen all the time.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Use of private onsen for free was a highlight. Otherwise, a clean and comfortable option with great food and evening entertainment.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: I’m from England and this was my first experience of a Ryokan. Well what an experience. The staff were so polite and helpful for every minute I was there - 2 nights. The food was amazing - I struggled with the Japanese breakfast but dinner was a gastronomic delight. So many items all beautifully presented. Okay some were a bit weird and I never thought I’d try never mind squid liver but it was lovely. The onsen was a little disappointing- didn’t have a good view and not as hot as I expected. The location is a little way out of Matsumoto but that’s where the hot springs are so if you want that then do be it. There is a decent local bus and the hotel ran a shuttle bus after breakfast. Otherwise it’s a Y2500-3000 taxi from the station. If you’ve never tried one then do and be prepared to go with the flow and appreciate a different way of doing things. Thank you to all the staff. And ps they even played some English songs for me during the evening musical entertainment.
Cons: Location but it’s there for a reason.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The staff were very helpful, and the owners were hospitable and charming. We chose a double (western) room which was large, comfortable and spotlessly clean. Very attractive and well maintained hotel.
Cons: Location is a little distant from the city center (unless you are visiting for the onsen).
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff was very helpful in providing bus routes, tickets. The hotel goes out of its way to make meals beautiful and interesting. All facilities are beautiful. There is also occasional musical entertainment.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing - the private onsen on the roof you can reserve was wonderful, and the service was exceptional. Excellent dinner and breakfast also, and the rooms are huge.
Cons: It’s a little bit out of the centre of town - there is a bus but just something to be aware of if a convenient location is your number 1 priority.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The food was excellent. I could not take beef and they replaced it with excellent pork and miso chicken. The beef that my wife took was excellent. Recommend to take their half board. The view from the room was nicely facing the mountain. It is a quite town which I like, far away of the busy city live.
Cons: The Japanese room was clean but a little outdated. Still I would recommend anyone to stay for 1 to 2 nights.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A wonderful way to experience a ryokan. The room was perfect in every way. Nice fine touches. Amazing service from all staff members. Truly a top notch experience.
Cons: Nothing at all.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent food, helpful and friendly staff, wonderful room, the onsen was absolutely lovely. Overall great experience.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Just a positive experience. The staff is a family who owns the location, and they are very welcoming and kind. They were very hospitable, and me and my traveling companion want to return soon and stay in this area again, because of how kind the staff was, how interesting and comfortable the location and surrounding wilderness were, and how we were able to get to many interesting places without too much of a difficult drive. Ice cream was also terrific. There is also an area where guests can talk and play music. It was very nice. Furthermore, breakfast was delicious, I would recommend you get it in addition to your stay.
Cons: At night, the drive can be a little scary and disorienting. So be sure to have your path picked out.

Pros: Very convenient to the castle. Well-appointed room and bathroom. Excellent and varied breakfast, including local fruit juices.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The rustic design was definetly a sight to behold. Just keep in mind, that the main building is just as old as it looks. You can get a free coffee if you decide that you dont need to clean up your room.
Cons: The rooms in the main building smell quite old, which was expected still annoying.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Location. Place has a nice atmosphere to it, well staffed! Mr. N, one of the English speaking staff helped us tremendously via the booking.com message / chat. Thank you!
Cons: Came in a group. Asked if they could place the luggage in our rooms since we still had a few hours left to check in and would go out for sightseeing. Was told that since there was so many pieces of luggage, it would be a extra charge for that. Ok? 7 rooms, 8 pieces of luggage? But if it was 1 room and one suitcase then....
